The Supreme Court in American Society Reader: Equal Justice Under Law
Kermit L. Hall Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0815337574 |
Book Description
The essays in this volume represent some of the best writing done about the history, political dynamics, and legal development of the Supreme Court. They remind us that interest in the court as not just a legal but a political and cultural entity has been prodigious. No other court has attracted anything approaching the scholarly attention on the so-called "Marble Palace" in Washington, D.C. Biographers, such as Bernard Schwartz and G. Edward White, remind us that talent on the high bench has made a difference in the growth of judicial power and in adjusting the Constitution to fit emerging social realities.
The essays in this landmark collection deal with the social controversies that have reached the Court and the ways in which the justices attempted to deal with them and the results of their doing so.
The Supreme Court in American Society serves as a powerful reminder of how important the Court has been to American life, how central a role it has played in interpreting the rule of lawagainst a constantly evolving social order, and how much it has mirrored the controversies, debates, and political struggles of American History.

Nature's Justice: Writings of William O. Douglas (Northwest Readers)
William O. Douglas Manufacturer: Oregon State University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0870714821 |
Book Description
As the longest-serving Justice in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, William O. Douglas was known for writing a host of dissenting opinions. He was also a prolific writer off the bench, a man whose work was as much concerned with nature as with law. This collection brings together writings that represent the wide range of Douglan's interests. It includes selections from his autobiographical and political books, and opinions from landmark cases--all reflecting not only his love of justice but also his roots in the Northwest and his lifelong commitment to the environment. These writings demonstrate that Douglas never shied from controvery--whether over interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment or the choice between flies and bait for trout fishing--and offer abundant inspiration for both environmentalists and all who yearn for a more just society. Whether extolling the joys of the wild or defending the rights of citizens, Douglas shows in this work that he truly was Nature's Justice--and one of a kind.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Despite the high-profile, televised court cases, the reality is that most people understand very little about the courts and cannot articulate the fundamental theories about the role of court personnel, such as lawyers and judges, and about the role of the courts in enhancing the social good. The editors of this collection have brought together twenty-nine illuminating articles that describe the processes of the courts, discuss overlooked areas of study, analyze court functions and problems, and present alternatives for change.

Electromechanics of Particles
Thomas B. Jones Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521431964 |
Book Description
The focus of this book is on the interactions of small particles, in the size range of microns to millimeters, with electric or magnetic fields. This field has particularly useful practical applications, for instance in photocopier technology and lately in the characterization and manipulation of cells and DNA molecules. The author's objective is to bring together diverse examples of field-particle interactions from many areas of science and technology and then to provide a framework for understanding their common electromechanical phenomena. Using examples from dielectrophoresis, magnetic brush xerography, electrorheology, cell electrorotation, and particle chain rotation, Professor Jones introduces a general model--the effective dipole method--to build a set of predictive models for the forces and torques responsible for the important electromechanical effects. In the last part of the book, the author covers the ubiquitous phenomenon of particle chaining. This book will be highly useful to material engineers and scientists, chemists, and biologists who work with particles, powders, or granular materials.Customer Reviews:
Behavior of polarizable particles in electric/magnetic field.......2000-05-25
Throughout the book, only classical electrostatics and magnetostatics are employed, i.e. particles are modelled as bodies and shells with given (complex) dielectric permittivity (magnetic permeability in the magnetostatic case), immersed in a homogeneous medium with different electric (or magnetic) properties. This is not a particular drawback, since there is an abundance of literature catering for readers interested in mezzoscopic phenomena.
It is clear that Professor Jones' intention was to make the book accessible not only to physicists, but first and foremost to the intended audience of engineers and scienctists from different branches of science. Thus, for instance, Chapter 2 introduces the effective moment model, which is used throughout the book rather than mathematically more complex the Maxwell tensor formalism. Even though the book is a scientific monograph, mathematics used as a rule does not exceed the standard repertoire of any textbook on electromagnetism, such as multipolar expansion. In addition, experimental scientists will probably appreciate numerous results presented as simple formulas, suitable for comparing with experimentally obtained values.
Investigation of the interaction of electric and magnetic field with particles is gaining importance, in particular in biotechnology. As standard textbooks on electromagnetism rarely proceed beyond Clausius-Mossotti law, it is difficult for someone new to this field to find where to start. This monograph could therefore serve as a valuable introduction and reference to this field for a working researcher or a graduate student.

In a Bluebird's Eye
Anita Clay Kornfeld Manufacturer: Authors Choice Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0595131840 |
Book Description
Set in an isolated coal-mining town in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, In a Bluebird's Eye is a moving portrayal of the world of a young girl growing up in the 1930s.
Although America is in the midst of the Depression, life in the provincial community of Margate has been unaffected. But suddenly the Black Diamond Coal Company announces its plans to close down, and the town is thrown into a state of panic.
Eleven-year-old Honor Jane Whitfield sees the disintegration of the community as her salvation. A lonely, rebellious child, she hates Margate, where her father's drinking and her mother's petty snobbishness have made outcasts of the Whitfield family. She finds solace only in the private world of her imagination and in her secret friendship with Lola, a black woman who has served time in prison for killing a man. When Honor Jane learns that Lola is in danger of being sent back to prison, she devises a risky plan to save her, not realizing the danger involved.
Drawing on her intimate knowledge of the region, Anita Clay Kornfeld has created a strikingly authentic portrait of life in the rural South during one of the most memorable eras in American life.

Bluebird of Happiness.......2001-01-28
This wonderful story unfolds with Honor believing in a magic bluebird who lives high above the Big Dipper, can fly anywhere and see anything with his magic eye. And the Devil is everywhere wrapped up in jaybird beathers. The only person who believes her is a dynamic character called Lola, a black woman who's spent time in prison for killing a white man, now paroled in custody of the town's doctor and his mean-spirited wife as a "free maid." Honor is fascinated by Lola and their secret friendship is at the heart of the story. She plots various escape routes for Lola. The sassy dialogue is southern exposure at its best. When the coal mines shut down, also the pending death of Margate, Honor's father sees a way out, moving the family to Kentucky and, through a college friend, he finds employment in a better town.
Lola tries to escape by means of one of Honor's schemes, and what follows is heart breaking as well as a healing for the Whitfields. Reading this classic work of fiction one is reminded of Tennessee Williams, and Harper Lee's beautiful novel, "To Kill a Mocking Bird." From the very first page of "In a Bluebird's Eye," Anita Clay Kornfeld wraps her magic around you and holds you tight for days after you've savored the last word.
