A timely synthesis.......2002-10-11

Over the last decade Graeme Snooks has
written an impressive number of books which renewed the
field of comparative analysis.
"The Global Crisis Makers" provides a very readable
synthesis of his former work and applies it to the
issues that mankind is facing at the beginning of the
21th century.
There is an insightful view on almost every page of this book, ranging from world strategy to a lucid assessment of
political develpments in Australia.
An incredibly candid and insightful read.
Highly recommended.

Fine critique of neoliberalism.......2001-07-18

This book comes to sensible conclusions by an unusual, though fascinating, route. Professor Snook's theme is that neoliberal economics, with its routine prescription of zero inflation, privatisation, free trade, flexible labour markets, and reduced wages, is bad for us. This capitalist monetarism dominates the international institutions, the World Bank, the IMF, the OECD and the EU, and also almost all current national governments: in effect, the monetarists impose the notorious Structural Adjustment Programs on all economies. Snooks observes that national governments have generally abandoned strategic leadership of their national societies and economies, and that this threatens both economic growth and political freedom. He notes that neoliberals "insist that central banks controlled by their fellow neoliberals be totally independent of political - that is, democratic - control." He warns us, "to grant central banks - organizations not responsible to society's strategists - the independence to suppress inflation at any cost is an invitation to disrupt the dynamic process." He points out that neoliberals constantly warn us about future economic crises if we do not obey their dictates, but their proposed cure actually produces these crises. Neoliberalism destroys wealth, by destroying the necessary conditions of economic growth. He warns that neo-liberalism's failures will lead to economic collapse, the destruction of democracy, and wars of conquest. He maintains that there is no Third Way; there is only the neoliberal way and the strategic way, the wrong way and the right way. So what is this strategic way? "Strategic leadership ... involves investing in strategic infrastructure (including science, research, education, transport and communication facilities) where the social return is expected to exceed the private return; encouraging domestic innovations and their marketing; promoting strategic ideas; spearheading the penetration of new markets by negotiating external trade and technology deals." Countries need "a protectionist strategy aimed at developing an innovative industrial base." We all need to focus on strategic ideas, without neglecting technological ideas. In sum, each country needs a government which actually governs, that works to rebuilding the national economy.

This volume is devoted exclusively to the interfacial photoelectronic properties of the inorganic layered semiconductors investigated in solid state (Schottky and p-n) photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical (solid/electrolyte) cells. The results of extensive studies on the various interfacial and surface electronic characteristics, interfacial photoreactions and materials aspects of the layered semiconductors reported in the last fifteen years have been reviewed. The layered transition metal dichalcogenides have served as model compounds for the investigation of the details of photoelectrochemical processes and related studies involving surfaces. The layered semiconducting materials have been found to be promising solar cell materials. Significant energy conversion efficiencies have been realized in photoelectrochemical solar cells and in solid state photovoltaic cells. Novel studies including quantum size effects in layered semiconductors have been reported. UHV spectroscopic studies of the surfaces of important layered semiconductors have been given. Recent developments in the preparation of the layered materials have been summarized. New insights into the physical and chemical characteristics of this class of materials have been gained by the studies reported in this book.

The TRUE king of Horror!.......2007-07-13

I got this book as a gift for my Birth Day. I loved Edgar Allan Poe, his writings, poetry, essays, everything. I first heard The Raven in my [...] class, than heard The Cask of Amontillado in my [...] class. I than fully fell-in-love with this Poet! I also went out and picked up Young Edgar Allan Poe, and read it, exploring his life from a small child in beautiful detail to his death. If you haven't read any of Edgar Allan Poe's writings yet, please do so. Now...
At first when you read some of his writings, you get washed away by the old-fashioned literature, to the insanity of his mind (which isn't so, mind you). I had to re-read The Masque of the Red Death twice before I fully comprehended just what happened. I relieved in the story: The Cask of Amontillado and The Pit and the Pendulum, struggled through The Bells, read my heart out in The Raven, raced through The Tell-Tale Heart and read curiously at The Man of the Crowd. This is truly the king of horror and insanity at it's best! Drop Stephen King for just a little while and read Poe, you won't regret it!

Indispensible edition!! A fine collection........2004-12-11

I've found this particular edition of Poe's (albiet incomplete) collected works to be the best and most accurate blend possible of his short fiction, poetry, and most important prose. The annotations and background information are also extremely helpful unlike some works that do not translate the Latin, for example. MOST IMPORTANTLY I've found this work to contain the most perfect editions of his poetry, as opposed to other collected works I've owned that have unusual deviances, such as "monody compels" (this ed.) vs "melody compels" of another edition. This has indeed become a faithful companion and my particular copy has become well-worn! I would suggest obtaining as a supplement a seperate edition of Poe's complete short stories and possibly also an edition of his collected prose, although this volume contains his perhaps most important work "The American Drama" anyway. Delve into the mind of a madman!.......2001-02-26

This story was disjointed, abstract, distrubing and confusing to the point that it hurt my head... yet I want to read it again. Although I'm not sure I understood everthing that happened, you get so caught up in the the agony of the characters insanity, one must read on to try to make sense of it. This is a book that you will read over and over to try and understand and just when you think you've got it... you will have doubt enough to read it once again!

Reading "The Fall of the House of Usher" for the first time it seems quite complicated due to both vocabulary and interpretation. Reading it again you notice how this difficult yet discriptive and varied vocabulary together with his narrative style capture you and set you right there next to the narrator to see what he saw and feel what he felt. The self-realizing prophecy of R.Usher makes you, too, fight with fear, but from a safe distance.
