The Japanese economy has shown paradoxical changes. Its success in forming a company-centered society generated the long downturn toward zero-growth capitalism. The successful spread of information technologies resulted in the deterioration of economic life among working people and a wide fall in birth rate. At the zenith of the Japanese model of company system, a huge bubble swelled, so as to prepare a prolonged depression throughout the 1990s. Neoliberalism with spiral reversal of capitalist development toward more competitive markets promoted difficulties among people. This book offers lucid reconsideration of neoliberalism through concrete Japanese experiences.

The beauty of the book lies in its long-term view on Japanese economy since the 1st oil shock to the lost decade of Japan (¡®90s), in terms of fancy words like globalization, IT, and neoliberalism. Those words are not frequently utilized to explain Japanese economy. The explanatory concept of the book is globalization. In this regard, this book could be read not only as another count to Japanese researches already mounting to the sky, but also as a case study on globalization in the light of Japanese economy. The author¡¯s view on the globalization is of the same kind to the ¡®race to the bottom¡¯ school. Though, personally, I haven¡¯t seen much good point in such views, the basic image the author sketches out is succinct and persuasive, for she (the author) poses the picture against the global trend since ¡®70s. she begins with simple sketch of Fordism before the 1st oil shock and then proceeds to great depression of ¡®70s. She characterizes the world economy since ¡®70s as the 3rd great depression (the 1st, 1870s-1890s; the 2nd, 1929). The features of globalization derived from the founding dynamics of great depression: cut-throat competition in worldwide market economy. IT has been the weapon to compete the market. The zeitgeist of this new era is the neoliberalism.
Against this global backdrop, she illustrates the changes in labor market, social institutions like family, expanding service industry, industrial hollowing-out and the forth. She insists that these global trends pose the question to Japanese economy.
Her explanation of the bubble burst is graphic and superb than any other materials that I¡¯ve read. She focused on micro (not only macro) mechanism which swollen the bubble, she links persuasively the process to the previous decades. But she suggests that the fundamental problems of Japanese economy to date is not merely deflation or liquidity trap but the one that globalization poses

Mental disability has come of age as a subject of concern under the European Convention on Human Rights. It was only in 1979 that the first significant decision of the ECHR was decided on the subject, and after that, cases were relatively few for many years. It is only recently that this has begun to change. This volume provides an account of where the law currently stands and speculation as to how it may develop. The initial chapters deal with substantive aspects of Convention rights (including issues of detention in institutions, conditions within institutions, medical treatment, problems associated with guardianship and others). The final two chapters move to discuss the practicalities of litigation. The book concludes with a number of appendices (primarily the primary international legal materials of relevance to mental disability rights under the ECHR, and the relevant recommendations and principles from the Council of Europe). It is hoped that this volume, in addition to shedding light on where the law currently stands, will offer practical guidance to lawyers concerning the mechanics of representing people with mental disabilities.

Food safety is now an issue of major concern throughout Europe. In the aftermath of recent alarms over BSE, avian 'flu, foot and mouth, e-coli and many others, the law has been seen as ill-equipped to respond to new crises, often resulting in the taking of legally questionable emergency measures. But security is not the only concern: for instance locally and regionally produced products now come under threat from mass produced variants manufactured using inferior quality ingredients and alternative methods of production, but legally marketable under the same food name. Yet it is difficult for national governments or the EC to take action without breaching Community rules. Subsidies in European agriculture are another issue, creating political pressures for Member States, the Union itself and the WTO. Animal welfare, human nutrition and human rights are other important elements in European food law. This book examines in detail the regulation of the production and marketing of food in Europe, placing the issues within the context of sociological and jurisprudential theories, and evaluating the ability of present law and policy to cope with the inevitable change and crises that impact upon the food industry.

How does the law of the European Union affect health law and policy? At first sight, it seems limited. However, despite its restricted formal competence, the EU has recently become increasingly involved in the health field. Litigation based on EU law has resulted in a ‘right to receive health care services’ across national boundaries which may have huge practical implications for national health systems. The EU has promulgated legislation regulating clinical research, and the marketing of pharmaceuticals; patients’ rights are affected by EU legislation on data protection and product liability; the qualifications of health care professionals are legally recognised across the EU; and the EU has acted to promote public health. This book explores the various impacts of measures of EU law on national health law and policy. Through elaboration of selected examples, the authors show that, within the EU, health law cannot be regarded as a purely national affair.
