    Book Description

As the globalization of economic production reshapes domestic economic activity and redefines the substance of international politics, the importance of international economic policy is becoming more widely appreciated. This book is a revised and updated edition of the definitive study of the decision-making process in all sectors--trade, finance, development, and energy--of U.S. international economic policy. Students and practitioners of economics and political science will find it invaluable in understanding how process affects substance in some of the most far-reaching policies being made in Washington. Straddling two of the nation's highest priorities--economic prosperity and national security--international economic policy necessitates continuous trade-offs from conflicting perspectives, making organization and procedure inherently significant determinants of a critically important policy. Opening with an explanation of the complex nature of the policy and its importance in political and economic terms, the book then examines the identities, responsibilities, attitudes, constituents, and institutional cultures of the executive branch, Congress, and interest groups involved in the formulation and conduct of policy. After considering the hardware of policymaking, the volume examines the major theories and decision-making models. It then focuses on the delicate relationship between the administration and Congress, illustrated by three case studies. In conclusion, the work assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the current policymaking process and offers recommendations for improvement.

                      Book Description

Inspired by the pace of change in the taxonomy of the aerobic endospore-forming bacteria, the Bacillus 2000 symposium on which this book is based was held in Bruges, Belgium, in August 2000, and was supported by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, the Belgian Society for Microbiology, and several commercial sponsors. Bringing taxonomists interested in Bacillus and its relatives together with people who work with these organisms in medicine, agriculture, and industry, allowed those attending to appreciate the overlaps and interactions of their areas of expertise, in the absence of any comprehensive treatment of the current systematics of the group. The meeting was a great success, and has resulted in the production of these proceedings, Applications and Systematics of Bacillus and Relatives, providing an up-to-date and comprehensive treatise on the classification, identification and applications of the aerobic endospore-forming bacteria; it is an essential reference for all microbiologists interested in these organisms.

5 out of 5 stars Solutions manual volume 2 and 3.......2007-10-02

I got it in the mail faster than expected. The manual works well even though its only odd problems. I use it all the time to double check my work or figure out how to solve certain problems. I have volume one and i used it a lot so I decided to get this one. So far, its been worth the money.

Peter Decker has distilled twenty-five years of ranching in Ridgeway, a previous life as a combat soldier, seaman, and as journalist into a warm but unsentimental book that appreciates the values of the real West as opposed to the Disneyfied, Hollywoodenized versions that glorify a time and a way of life that never was. Decker's reality is far more interesting.

His chapters on what life is like on a ranch, what it is like for an outsider to try to find acceptance in a community like Ridgeway, what the frustrations are and what are the real joys would be enough to make this book well worth the reading for anyone who wants to know about life in a small town in the American West at the turn of our century. But there is much more.

Decker has woven the land, the history, the people and the present into a gem of a book. The issues of how rural people with their values are affected when the migration pattern of countryside to city are reversed can be applied to small towns all over the country. Decker does not offer solutions but his clear-eyed warmth and his understanding of people, the strengths and their failings makes fascinating reading.

4 out of 5 stars Debunking the myths.......2004-10-21

The subject of Clans, heraldry and tartans in Scotland is massive and complex. The authors, apart from having been Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs are also Procurator Fiscal at the Court of the Lord Lyon and Chair of the Heraldry Society of Scotland. They are in an excellent position to speak on these subjects, what the book has not got is a list correcting the urban myths which have grown up about these subjects, and so allows people to think that it is incomplete or wrong. For example, one review has said that the Campbell tartan show is wrong and that clansmen should wear another. There is no right or ban on wearing any tartan, and Lady Saltoun, Chief of the Clan Fraser, points out that there are many Fraser tartans, some of which she has never even seen in use. The same is true of the Campbells.
The book concentrates on members of the Standing Council because all Chiefs recognised by the Lord Lyon are invited to join. The much briefer second section relates to clans and families without such a chief. Clan Socities and Clan Associations are private clubs, and it is impossible to include their details.
The encyclopaedia gives a decent and accurate history of each clan. It could be more detailed of course, but then, each clan could fill a book, even a one of this size, on its own.

2 out of 5 stars Skewed point of view.......2004-01-02

Heraldry was introduced to Scotland in the 12th century with the advent of 1000 Anglo-Norman adventurers. The descriptions of coats of arms are derived from middle French. Some may have wondered about the number of French and English mottos and the paucity of Gaelic ones at a time when most of Scotland was Gaelic-speaking.

This book purports to describe the history, all too briefly, of Gaelic-speaking clans. There are errors in the spelling of almost every Gaelic word in the book. One wonders why the writers couldn't have found their way to the Department of Celtic in one of the Scottish universities.

In my opinion the word 'clan' should be used to describe Gaelic-speaking families as it is a loan word from Gaelic 'clann' meaning 'children' or descendants'. Lowland kin groups (non Gaelic-speaking) should be called 'families'.

Another "potted clan history", an inadequate attempt to describe the histories of many families in too little space with too much of an emphasis on a foreign element - heraldry. People wanting to learn something about the Scottish Highlands would be better off buying a history of the highlands such as Grant and Cheape's "Periods in Scottish History" and individual volumes on particular clans.

2 out of 5 stars A good resource, but not great!.......2003-12-26

I have read more than one review of this book which refer to it as a "bible" but, sadly, this is not the case. The second reviewer from Annapolis, MD is closer to the mark, stating that it is a good companion book.

Do not purchase this book thinking it is the authoritative work on Scottish clans and families - it is not. Perhaps some corrections will be made in future editions?

Regardless, it is worth the price of admission but barely!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference work.......2002-10-28

If this book was sold by weight it would still be a wonderful buy. It is a heavy volume and very high glass paper. Much care went into making this a collector's book. The Binding is sewing not glued, so the workmanship is not often seen in books these days.

Now to the inside...two pages are dedicated to most Clans, showing excellent colour pictures of the tartan. It also lists the Clan's arms, crest, motto. It give a better than average history of each Clan, which takes up the first 2/3s of the book. The later part takes up the Armigerous Clans, many of these are often left out of works in most Clan and Tartan reference works, so this is definitely a plus. In Appendix 1 they give you a good Chronology of dates of importance in Scottish History. For a timeline, it's better than most I have been in works similar to this. Appendix 2 gives Scottish Monarchs for Kenneth I to the Union of Parliaments in 1707. Appendix 3 is a very nice glossary of Heraldic Terms - was very impressed with this section. Appendix 4 for gives septs and names associated with various Clans. I have seen this in other works, and again, this one is much better. Appendix 5 will be of special interests to people tracing their family treat as his gives you information concerning tracing genealogy in Scotland. There is an Index, with excellent fonts, so easy to read.

All in all worthy, quick reference for the Clans of Scotland.

If only one book on the subject of Scotland's clans and families were truly all encompassing, this book would in fact be the one to buy. But no one book can do the subject of Scotland's people justice. While this `encycolpedia' does provide some very interesting and informative items, such as just what a clan encompasses, it does repeat many of the same errors on family associations that prior authors on the subject have made. One might think with the credentials of the authors that their research would have been much better. For example: On Campbell, the tartan shown is that of Campbell of Argyll, which is the incorrect tartan. The Campbell of Argyll tartan was designed specifically for use by one the Past Dukes of Argyll as his own `personal tartan'. It is not to be worn by members of the clan. The Ancient Campbell tartan, also known as the Blackwatch tartan is the tartan which may be worn by all Campbells.

Additionally this book wants in explaining exactly what The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs is - it is a private association of certain chiefs, and omits from its membership some "officially' recognized chiefs of Scottish clans. The book may give the uniformed reader the impression that the `Council' somehow helps The Court of the Lord Lyon make determinations on who is or is not the Chief of a Clan or Head of a Family. There is a blurring of the facts here. The Court of the Lord Lyon is the only authority in Scotland who may ratify and confirm Chiefs. The Lord Lyon signature on papers known as Letter Patent and on the Matriculation document, amounts to the Queen's signature ratifying the Chief of a Clan or Family. Only Lyon's signature and Seal of Office on such official state documents makes a Chief a Chief. That there is an omission of certain Chiefs and their clans from the work is obvious.

The index of names and clan associations is also lacking. There are many Scottish surnames which have clan or family associations which are not to found within the pages of this work. Likewise there are Scottish surnames which have no clan associations at all, and some names which have no tartans associated with them whatever.

Much of the History and Heraldry contained in the book is well done, there is no denying this. The Heraldry in particular is one of the better features, and there is likely no other book on the market which shows the richness and brilliance of Scots Heraldry. The banners, standards and clan crests badges of the Members of the Standing Council are well done, but for the Armigerous clans and families at the rear of the book, their herldry, history and accuracy is very lacking indeed. In fact, some families or clans are not mentioned at all.

While this book is certainly NOT a Clan Bible, it makes a good companion for other such books. It is still a good source of reference, and a must have for anyone interested in Scotland's colorful past as well as learning about the presence of the clans as they exist today.

The Human Chain Reaction That Led To The Atom Bomb
On December 26, 1898, Marie Curie announced the discovery of radium and observed that "radioactivity seems to be an atomic property." A mere 47 years later, "Little Boy"exploded over Hiroshima. Before the Fallout is the epic story of the intervening half century, during which an exhilarating quest to unravel the secrets of the material world revealed how to destroy it, and an open, international, scientific adventure transmuted overnight into a wartime sprint for the bomb.

Weaving together history, science, and biography, Diana Preston chronicles a human chain reaction of scientists and leaders whose discoveries and decisions forever changed our lives. The early decades of the 20th century brought Einstein's relativity theory, Rutherford's discovery of the atomic nucleus, and Heisenberg's quantum mechanics, and scientists of many nations worked together to tease out the secrets of the atom. Only 12 years before Hiroshima, one leading physicist dismissed the idea of harnessing energy from atoms as "moonshine." Then, on the eve of World War II, the power of atomic fission was revealed, alliances were broken, friendships sundered, and science co-opted by world events.

Preston interviewed the surviving scientists, and she offers new insight into the fateful wartime meeting between Heisenberg and Bohr, along with a fascinating conclusion examining what might have happened had any number of events occurred differently. She also provides a rare portrait of Hiroshima before the blast.

As Hiroshima's 60th anniversary approaches, Before the Fallout compels us to consider the threats and moral dilemmas we face in our still dangerous world.

"My God, What have we done?"

With those words, the crew of the "Enola Gay" summed up their feelings after dropping the A-Bomb that obliterated Hiroshima. The history of the Atomic (and later, Hydrogen) bomb permeates the history of the past century: from 1895, when Roentgen discovered the X-Ray, through the pioneering experiments of Einstein, Edward Teller, J. Robert Oppenheimer; Leo Szilard (the often-overlooked main ingredient in the Manhattan Project) through efforts to control nuclear proliferation and the Cold War.
That's a lot of ground to cover, but in "Before the Fallout: From Marie Curie to Hiroshima" Diana Preston attempts, and to a large degree succeeds, in doing so.

While Richard Rhodes' monumental two-volume history (The Atomic Bomb, and "Dark Sun") will remain the Industry Standard for the nuclear history cottage industry, Preston has done an admirable job of encapsulating the excitement, paranoia, and regrets of the Nuclear Founders. She does an excellent job of giving credit where credit is due to some of the neglected major players in the drama: Leo Szilard, who was prescient about the political and military consequences of nuclear energy; Werner Heisenberg, who directed the Nazi nuclear project although he wasn't a Nazi; and Niels Bohr.

The tension between J.Robert Oppenheim, the brilliant physicist (he got his PhD at 22) and developed the Black Holes in space theory) and Edward Teller is the material for books that stand on their own in reporting it: "American Prometheus", for one.

This is fascinating stuff for all of us: those in "The Greatest Generation" who fought WWII; those of us in the Baby Boomer generation who grew up under the shadow of the bomb and remember "duck and cover" drills in elementary school; and the Public Leaders who should read, and digest, this material CAREFULLY!

My only reservations are the speculative "What If's" that she includes in her Epilogue. Sure, its fascinating to speculate on what might have happened if Hitler had used the intellectual genius of Heisenberg and others to build the bomb.. but he didn't.

I give this four and a half stars.

Diana Preston combines the exciting story of the individuals responsible for the scientific discoveries of Atomic Energy with the race for the Atomic Bomb. She traces the fifty year journey of discoveries which culminated in Hiroshima's destruction. The book is one of biography, science (well told and easy to understand), and the history of this unique quest for knowledge. The book is a broad overview of the subject which along the way presents material that surely could be expanded into many different books and even a few movies. For example the story of the two attempts to destroy the Nazi's Norwegian source of Heavy Water reads like the film "The Guns of Navarone".
I have had the pleasure to meet Diana Preston and hear her speak at the Los Angeles Times Book Fair. She is a regular attendee. I have read all but her first book and have felt her "Lusitania" her greatest achievement but this, her newest, is just as wonderful.
The book is well organized and has many characters that you find easy to follow via each mini biography throughout the narrative. The book ends with really two epilogues. (I do like a good epilog too.) The first tells what happened to each participant after WWII and the last is a "what if" analysis this is most interesting as it puts many of the events in the book into a broad context and points out the individual difference each scientist made. I just loved Preston's comment at the end of the book... "History....even the history of science... is inherently about people, how they thought, what they did with their thoughts, and how they interacted with the individuals immediately around them and then with society and the greater world order. All involved in this story....regardless of race, sex. creed, age, or intellectual ability... had the potential to act individually. In thinking about history but, above all, about the future, we should not depersonalize situations but remember our individual responsibility for them and the consequences fro others." I know you will find this book amazing even if you feel the subject might be dry and to scientific. (High Schools please add this one to your required reading list.)

5 out of 5 stars Diana Preston has done it again!.......2006-02-17

Since reading Lusitania three years ago, I have devoured every Diana Preston book that I can get my hands on. I wasn't sure that I would enjoy Before the Fallout as much as the others since science is not my specialty, but once again her book has totally captured my attention. The way Preston weaves the history with the science (but not too technical) with the personal lives of the people involved is fascinating. Certainly the development of the atomic bomb is one of the defining events of our lifetime, and the story behind that event as told by Diana Preston is so intriguing that I would recommend this book to anyone! My only disappointment is that now that I'm done, I'm going to have to wait awhile for her next book!

"Before the Fallout", while lacking the technical detail presented in Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb", presents some interesting personality sketches (the degree to which these are subjective remains unresolved). Preston presents an interesting collection of missed opportunities on the road to the discovery of fission. One may be left with the feeling that body of the book serves only as a platform for the epilogue and its litany of "what if"s.

5 out of 5 stars The Biggest Story of the Twentieth Century.......2005-09-16

I saw Diana Preston on CNN Book TV, lecturing about her book, presented on the day of the 60th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bomb. That day, several author's were featured who had written books on the atomic bomb. She is a brilliant speaker and a superb author. My vocabulary has been expanded as a result of reading this book.

This is a big story, of mythic proportions. I've always been drawn to the story of the Manhattan Project and the events of World War II. Preston does a thorough job describing all the of characters involved in the science leading up to the making of atomic bomb. Before reading this book, I had some vague recollection about Einstein's involvement. Now I know the real players, and how Einstein was used merely for his "star power" to get an introduction to the President.

There has been a lot of second guessing about the decision to use the atomic bomb. Preston concludes her book with a "What If?" chapter, getting into questions like this.

My one complaint is I feel that Preston did not give proper coverage to the combat experience of the battles in the Pacific - Okinawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Tarawa. The book to read is "The Story of World War II" by Miller and Commanger. In that book, I was overwhelmed by the personal narratives of those who fought in the Pacific. The gruesome facts of that war are something most Americans were shielded from. Preston's book lacks the passion that Miller's book conveyed of the difficult combat conditions and the overall feeling of futility experienced by the soldiers, both American and Japanese. In this one sense, I was a little disappointed in the political correctness of her "What If?" chapter.

She did provided a famous passage from a 21 year old second lieutenant that bears worth repeating:

"When the bomb dropped and the news began to circulate that the invasion of Japan would not, after all, take place, that we would not be obliged to run up the beaches near Tokyo assualt-firing while being mortared and shelled...We were going to live. We were going to grow up to adulthood after all."

Also, she relates that, ironically, some of the Japanese authorities felt that the use of bomb may have saved Japanese lives, by giving Emporer Hirohito a reason, justifiable in his mind, to surrender. To my own thinking, the bomb must have been so incredible - so "Godzilla" like - that it was something that Hirohito could bow down to and admit defeat. It was an enemy that equalled his own ego.

In political matters such as this, there are no "right answers". There only a "pile of rights" versus a "pile of wrongs".

And parents: This book is a GREAT READ FOR PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY STUDENTS!

A noted parapsychologist offers convincing evidence of psychic ability through her numerous experiments. Examine the techniques used in different esoteric schools for altering states of consciousness from a scientific point of view. An authoritatively written work emphasizes that the psychic arts should be a working, living part of a way of life. As practical as it is spiritual, this will lead you to a oneness with, the universe.

By far one of my favorite books on the shelf. I have read through it twice and found it enjoyable both times. She does a wonderful job explaining herself so that an introductory reader can follow along. The only reason I did give it 5 stars is the lack of depth regarding chemical interactions in the human brain. If you like this, also see DMT: The Spirit Molecule by Rick Straussman.

                                                    This very well researched book delves into everything from: Universal Patterns, PSI reasearch, Breaking down rituals to see why and how they work;
How our own PSI and Anti-PSI abilities affect the successful outcomes of our spells, meditations, prayers.
The psychological factors that either help or hinder our ability to affect our destinies.
She goes into theorize about the Pineal Gland is really the third eye, and how science backs this up. Overall a lot of research is presented here to tie in science(including Quantum Physics, magick, anthropology and parapsychology. Actually rather easy to read considering how much information is contained.
Highly recommended for anyone who is looking for some advanced information on working Magick!

I read this book years ago, soon after it was published and was blown away by it's even-handed treatment of the material. In particular, the analysis of the pineal gland as the biological equivalent of the "third eye" is exceptional. Skeptics should "subject" themselves to this material which may transform their views and widen their perspective. A thoroughly well-written piece on the physical reality of magick in all of it's forms. I eagerly await Dougal's next work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source material........2000-01-05

Where Science and Magic Meet is one of the source books I use for a survey class I occasionally teach. The book provides information from both a mystical and scientific perspective, without being too *airy-fairy* or b-o-r-i-n-g. I find it very useful as an introduction for folks with no background in the genre and who are skeptical of the idea that *Magick* works. She explains it beautifully.

Serena Roney-Dougal is both an academic and a witch. Her work combines scientific research and pagan culture. There are no lists of spells, cookbook rituals, or lyrics to invocations. This is an interesting read for a cynical mystic.

It is a good introduction into the world of Radionics, however simplified and basic. If one is interested in learning more about the possibilities of Radionics, this is a good book to read.
