Book Description
The Prospects of Industrial Civilization, originally published in 1925, is the most ambitious of Bertrand Russell's books on modren society, and it offers a rare glimpse into often-ignored subtleties of his political thought. Written on a trip to China with Dora Black (who became his second wife), it is revealing both as a period piece and as a book for our times.
Russell criticizes his own age and demonstrates how humanity perpetually struggles against the centralizing forces of industrialism and nationalism. He views industrialism as a threat to human freedom, since it fundamentally linked with nationalism, and he proposes one government for the whole world as a solution.
Russell is not blind to the positive side of industrialism, arguing that the global village and prevailing political democracy should be its eventual results.

Book Description
Since 1979, China has been building new legal institutions made necessary by economic reforms that have reduced the role of state planning, and by the decline of Maoist totalitarianism. This book analyzes the principal legal institutions that have emerged and assesses the prospects for increasing the rule of law in China.
The book first establishes the cultural and institutional context in which legal reforms take place. It traces the main features of pre-Communist Chinese legal tradition, the drastic impact on law of thirty years of Maoist rule, and the extensive changes throughout Chinese society since Mao’s death, notably the rise of the local party-state at the expense of central government power. The book’s analysis begins with the Chinese leadership’s policy toward law, identifying basic ambivalence toward law that makes the Chinese commitment to legality incomplete. It then surveys major developments, emphasizing the creation of new rights, revision of criminal law and procedure, and construction of a nascent administrative law.
The book then examines in detail dispute resolution by extrajudicial mediation and the courts. Although mediation is no longer infused with Maoism, it is still used as an instrument to maintain public order. The study of the courts examines court organization, the selection and training of judges, the rise of litigation, the critical influence of localism, and ongoing conflicts between professionalism and a continuing tendency to view the judge as a soldier of the state. The author suggests that the limited role that Chinese courts are today permitted to play combines with the organization of the judicial process and the mentality of the judiciary to make Chinese adjudication more akin to bureaucratic decision making than judging in the West.
How should the accomplishments of legal reform and the continuing obstacles to further reform affect U.S. policy toward China? The book concludes by appraising implications for U.S. policy on such issues as human rights, Chinese involvement with the World Trade Organization, and bilateral relations generally. The author argues that U.S. policy makers must neither moralize about the rule of law nor dismiss it as a concept alien to China. They must also curb both optimism and expectations that legal reform will lead to political reform. Chinese law can only grow slowly, no matter how urgently the West may desire quick progress.

Book Description
The surprising truth behind many of the most cherished "facts" in science history
Morse invented the telegraph, Bell the telephone, Edison the light bulb, and Marconi the radio . . . right? Well . . . the truth is slightly more complicated. The history of science and technology is riddled with apocrypha, inaccuracies, and falsehoods, and physicist Tony Rothman has taken it upon himself to throw a monkey wrench into the works. Combining a storyteller's gifts with a scientist's focus and hardheaded devotion to the facts-such as they may be-Rothman breaks down many of the most famous "just-so" stories of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, and technology to give credit where credit is truly due. From Einstein's possible misunderstanding of his own theories to actress Hedy Lemarr's role in the invention of the radio-controlled torpedo, he dredges his way through the legends of science history in relating the fascinating stories behind some of the most important, and often unsung, breakthroughs in science.
Tony Rothman, PhD (Bryn Mawr, PA), is a Research Associate at Bryn Mawr College. He is the author of seven other critically acclaimed science books and a frequent contributor to leading science publications, including Scientific American and Discover.
Customer Reviews:
Tough Subjects Incisively Illuminated.......2005-09-29
Tony Rothman has written a fascinating tome on the many misinformations firmly implanted in our consciousness about
who invented what, from ancient times to the 20th Century.
While some of the subjects covered are very tough for anyone not scientifically trained, Rothman tries to leaven his narrative with flashes of unexpected humor, often with success. Definitely not a book to be devoured at one sitting, but rather one to be
dipped into at leisure, and worth returning to again and again
to fully grasp the significance of his research.
Amusing.......2005-09-07
This author, who is an expert in science, goes through many firsts in science and engineering and shows how many people worked on an idea and only one got the credit. Frequently the person who heard of the other discoverers before they ever thought about the idea.
There is one defect in the book and that is the author's bias against spiritual-religious beliefs. He is ignorant of the basics of these systems and makes false claims about them and then condemns the people who hold them and claim that it was these beliefs that caused them to get the credit for what others did.
Another bias of the author is that he thinks that the first person who made a poorly functioning invention should get the credit instead of the person who made a fully functioning version that the public accepted and used..
A famous philosopher said that history is the lie that historians agree to. This is very true. After reading this book you will wonder how much of what journalists say is true considering historians who do careful research for several years on a topic frequently get it wrong.
Hero-hater.......2004-07-30
This book is written by a spiteful and envious person who's sole purpose is to bring down history's scientific heros. Heros without whom we would not be enjoying the safe, healthy and comfortable lives we live today.
Who was first in science and technology?.......2003-12-11
This is a book about priority in science --- who gets the credit for being there first? One undisputed case is between Darwin and Wallace. Wallace came up with evolution on his own, but he was a friend of Darwin. When Wallace informed Darwin that he planned to publish the theory, Darwin quickly finished his Origin of Species. The rest is history. Evolution is credited to Darwin, but far fewer people know about Wallace.
Tony Rothman tells about two dozen additional stories like this in Everything's Relative. He divides the book into three sections: Physics, Technology, and Biology. The discoveries in physics center on explanations for the behavior of matter and energy. But so many of these explanations were "in the air" when they came to light that you can find at least one other person who should be co-credited for just about every major discovery. Einstein, in particular, wasn't inclined to credit those who came before him, but Rothman knows the facts. He tells you where Einstein got his ideas, then he leaves you to judge who was first.
This book was hard to put down. Somehow, Rothman takes a vast number of facts --- including a lot of dates and names I've never heard before --- and strings them together in a way that is easy to understand. With an average writer, I would have been lost. But Rothman makes it easy. This is a great science book. If you've read stacks of science books already, you need this one. It will correct some of your ideas about priority. It adds to your understanding of science, as well. For those who don't read a lot about science, it's a great place to start. I wish I knew all of this stuff years ago.
a great read!.......2003-11-19
Did Einstein really say "everything's relative"? Who invented the telegraph? the telephone? TV? And what is Hedy
Lamar doing in a book like this? Chances are that your answers are wrong -- or only partly right.
In this engaging, entertaining, witty, sometimes funny and always meticulously researched book, Rothman
takes us on a tour of the many "just so" stories that our science or history teachers used to tell us. For those of us who teach science or history,
it is also a reminder to be wary of those stories in the textbooks we use that glibly attribute the development of complex scientific concepts or
technological artifacts to one or a small number of individuals. Except perhaps when that individual happens to be Einstein. Did he really say, "everything is relative"? You'd have to read the book to find out!

20,000 Leagues under the Sea summary.......1999-05-14
This book is about a naturalist who is invited to hunt for an ocean monster, but ends up in the monster, only it is actually an electrically run submarine. The captain of the submarine did not want any one to find out about it, so now the naturalist is a captive with his component and an agressive harpooner. He gets to explore the ocean, but craves land. Can he ever get back on land?

Book Description
In Phantoms of Remembrance, Patrick Geary makes important new inroads into the widely discussed topic of historical memory, vividly evoking the everyday lives of eleventh-century people and both their written and nonwritten ways of preserving the past. Women praying for their dead, monks creating and re-creating their archives, scribes choosing which royal families of the past to applaud and which to forget: it is from such sources that most of our knowledge of the medieval period comes. Throughout richly detailed descriptions of various acts of remembrance--including the naming of children and the recording of visions--the author unearths a wide range of approaches to preserving the past as it was or formulating the past that an individual or group prefers to imagine.
Customer Reviews:
A sophisticated discussion of the creation of "history".......1999-10-15
I found this book to be very stimulating and very creatively framed -- perhaps a bit too creatively, in a few cases. An important addition to the growing literature on medieval narrative/memory. Recommended for specialists, although the prose is quite engaging, one often feels as if one is coming in on a private conversation among practicing medievalists.
some interesting points, generally difficult to read.......1999-03-18
Perhaps the book is too specialized for me as amateur history-enthusiast (although i found this book via a recommended reading for 1st year history students). I found this book tedious and often did not have much of an idea what point the author was trying to make here. I liked his discussion of the role of women and monasteries as institutionalized memory of medieval society.
I am curious to see what others found of this book. I, for one, will not read this book again.

The `violence' of life in the middle ages is nowadays both taken for granted and little understood. The essays in this collection all suggest or explore reasons why violent acts might have been perpetrated, and attempt to understand the social priorities which governed such acts. Broadly, the studies clarify issues relating to the creation of political identities and the establishment of social order, and cover matters of administration, religious ritual, and gender. Book Description
In Inventing Nature Matthias Gross argues--on the basis of his analysis of diverse restoration efforts in North America--that a new understanding of the relationship between human actors and nature is needed. No longer merely a laboratory for scientists, no longer sacred space to be left alone, in the context of ecological restoration physical surroundings must be understood as our partner and peer in the project of community-building. Inventing Nature offers a way past the social constructivist versus realist debate in the environmental social sciences that is both scholarly rigorous and practically engaged.

Book Description
Kids absolutely love everything nasty and disgusting; it’s especially fun when their enthusiasm for the “ick factor” drives parents, teachers, and any adult in sight to distraction. Now youngsters can indulge their lust for the foul with 50 wonderfully repulsive projects (illustrated in color for that extra pow). The repellent journey starts with the stinky, scaly, slimy side of the human body; children meet the critters that live under the skin and fingernails, learn what causes those embarrassing sounds and smells, and make (very convincing) fake blood to throw Mom into a panic. They’ll cook up impressively scary gangrene fingers from marzipan; whip up “booger bath,” and grow a gross mold garden. To end this salute to the truly nauseating: a special “You’re Gross and You’re Proud!” celebration.
Customer Reviews:
The illustrator's perspective.......2004-11-18
As the illustrator of this book, I got to read the gross facts, projects, and recipes before anyone else. And I'll admit, my first thought was, "Man...this stuff really IS gross." However, being a guy, it was easy to regress back to when I was about 8 years old - when being able to tell someone a gross fact or show them something gross instantly made you king of the playground. I tried to keep an 8-year old's mindset when sketching the art for the book, and there are certain illustrations that made me laugh when I finished them. My favorite? It's hard to say, but I love the one of the baby bunny eating his own poo. (Yes, they do that. And it's actually a cute drawing, if you can believe it.)
But getting back to the review... my wife and I made a couple of the recipes for a newspaper article, and they turned out well. The Toe Jam Dip with Apple Toes is actually really good, and great for kids' birthday parties. Personally, I enjoyed reading the gross historical and biological facts, and I think most kids would find those interesting. But let me warn you...this book is for 8-12 year olds, and it talks about "farts" and poo and burps pretty often. So if those words are no-nos in your house, you might want to avoid this book. However, if your kid is looking for something to amuse him or herself, and they enjoy gross things, this is a great book to get. And I hope they like the illustrations.
