Great information for everyone!!!.......2005-06-15

This book is a great read! It lays out the rules for having credit cards and checking accounts that I wish I had when starting out with my personal finances. I finally found out how checks are used by banks and department stores. And I like the ways to protect myself from getting my personal information ripped off and my credit ruined. And the ways to get out of financial trouble if your in it are wonderful.

This book also has many ways to get free money in the form of grants for college and starting a business that I find useful. Many foundations and the government have a lot of money they give away every year. There is a lot of free money out there that I didn't even know about, like credit cards and special financing deals for cars and furniture.

I always thought that a budget was about counting pennies, but I was wrong. The way to create a budget in the book is easy and makes sense. And there is a lot of good information about easy investing for the future. I loved it!

Lake Issyk-Kul is a closed lake located in the Tien Shan mountain belt of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. It is the world's fifth deepest lake (668 m) and the second largest high altitude lake in the world (1607 m above sea level). The lake is affected by several environmental threats of both anthropogenic and natural origin: decline of the lake level resulting in progressively increasing salinity, incomplete vertical water exchange, and risk of contamination by past and present industrial activity.Although the lake has been intensively studied, the information is only available in unpublished reports or local scientific journals. This book presents for the first time to an international audience the main physical, chemical, biological and geological characteristics of the lake, the fruits of many years of observations, complemented by recent results of international projects. Case studies of similar problems in other parts of the world are presented, together with ethical aspects of the environmental protection of the lake.

Lockout is the story of the most famous labor dispute in Irish history. At 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday August 26, 1913, the trams stopped running in Dublin. Striking conductors and drivers, members of the Irish Transport Workers' Union, abandoned their vehicles. They had refused a demand from their employer, William Martin Murphy of the Dublin United Transport Company, to forswear union membership or face dismissal. The company then locked them out. By January 1914 the union had lost the battle, lacking the resources for a long campaign. The labor movement lost influence in the revolutionary events of the following years: nationalism thrust it to one side. But in the long run, it won the war: 1913 meant that there was no going back to the horrors of pre-Larkin Dublin. This is an outstanding survey. The definitive work on the subject for many years to come.

Comprehensive History of a Historic Labor Dispute.......2001-06-10

I thought this was an excellent and well-written account of the specific dispute. The length of the book is due to Mr. Yeate's inclusion, properly and informatively so, of the other major issues of the day (Nationalism and Home Rule, the role of the Catholic Church, Socialism/Syndicalism, suffragism, Unionism and Partition, the 1916 uprising, and WW1).

As an Irish-American with only a rudimentary understanding of Irish history, I found this account very valuable as a way to understand the different shades of opposition to English imperialism in Ireland prior to the 1916 Uprising. Reading this history has also helped me immensely in understanding the difficulties in implementing the current Peace Process.

It is interesting that, according to Mr. Yeates, no detailed account of this event had been written, although it is frequently mentioned as a lead-up to the 1916 Uprising. As pointed out by Mr. Yeates, the total lack of involvement by Dublin Castle (the English Establishment) in this life-and-death dispute for so many showed the Irish that Irish affairs were very low on the English agenda.

The awfuul and pervasive poverty in Dublin, which inspired the unions to carry out this sruggle, was a real indictment of capitalism and English rule of Ireland.

My only disappointment was the lack of background and personal information on Jim Larkin, the fiery, inspiring, charismatic, and sometimes-destructive leader of the Transport Workers Union, whose strike against the Dublin trams led to the lockout by a unified group of employers.

Great Supplimentary Text.......2004-02-27

As a sixth grade teacher in California, I am often challenged by the fact that many of my Resource and ELD students have difficulty reading and comprehending the grade level text on Ancient Civilizations. This is a great supplimental book for these students. They are able to study the same civilizations as the rest of the class and participate in classroom discussions and projects because they are able to read and understand this text. It gives them a great sense of accomplishment to be able to do so!

I would have given 5 stars but it isn't what we expected,we thought it would be more like a textbook. However,our daughter just turned six and is learning to read- she really likes to read the questions so daddy can answer it- for this reason we appreciate the time together and she learns how to read in question format. I was a little surprised at how infomative it is while easy enough for our four year old son to comprehend. (he sits and listens too). We love the book and would buy again.

My 3 year old has already asked me many questions in this book,
so it hits the mark on being full of real questions that a real child would ask. The explanantions are short (about 1 paragraph)
and easy to understand - although I found the vocabulary sometimes a bit tough for my 3 year old. I often used simpler words while reading to her. I expect therefore that the rated age range beginning with 4 years is probably accurate from the point of view of understanding the explanations completely. The questions are arranged in groups such as "bathtime questions" and in a "story" order revolving around a child in that particular situation (ie. the child is getting a bath and is asking questions that start with "how does hot and cold water run out of the same tap" and ending with "why do my hands get all wrinkly after I've been in the bath a long time"). Each question and it's associated exaplanation and illustration cover a full two-page spread of the book. My only complaint is that the book does not actually contain as much detailed "science" content as I had hoped to find - since it is based on questions that children ask, not on concepts someone wanted to include purely for the sake of completeness. I would guess that 8 year olds might be left wanting more information that is given in the answers (which could be considered a good thing, spurning them on to further research). Certainly for the younger ages though, this is a great book. (More questions from the book: "Do the doors at the grocery store open by magic?" "Why do stars Twinkle?" "Why does it smell so good outside after it rains?" "Why do I have to use the toilet and where does it go when I flush?")

From the PrefaceInterest in food phenolics has reached a new high in recent years. Apart from the usual academic interest in the biology and chemistry of phenolic compounds in nature, the scientific and commercial interest in food phenolics has been accentuated by reports on beneficial health effects of such compounds. Many food phenolics have been reported to possess antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic activity in test animals. Furthermore, there has been a renewed interest on natural sources of antioxidants and these generally belong to the phenolic group of compounds. Our daily intake of phenolics from dietary sources exceeds one gram. The effect of these compounds on our health status and prevention of deterioration of processed foods as well as their nutritional and sensory quality needs to be addressed. The present monograph reports the occurrence and chemistry of phenolics in different food commodities, their nutritional and health effects, and their role as antioxidants in food processing. In addition, methods of analysis and quantification of food phenolics are covered.
