    Book Description

The theme of British economic decline is inescapable in contemporary debates about Britain's economic performance and sense of national identity. Understanding Decline is a serious contribution to an important argument, approached in a way that is accessible not only to specialist academics but to students of economics, history and politics. The volume includes case studies through which the reality of decline can be explored, while differing perceptions of decline are examined in a number of essays dealing with ideas and policy issues.

This is a very exciting story full of action & mystery. Set in Ireland, it is about what happens when Joe and Maeve on the first day of their summer holidays find a dog wandering around the countryside. They try to find the dog's owner and realise that their is a dangerous connection between the dog and a great empty Georgian house. Ideal for 9-11 year olds, my kids loved it!

                    Book Description

The Liver in Biology and Disease was conceived as a sequel in the series Principles of Medical Biology, whose general aim continues to be the integration of human biology and molecular cell biology into modern molecular medicine. It is a volume molded by the Information Revolution which few will deny has forced the teaching faculties in our medical schools to curtail and prune the teaching load and focus on fundamentals and principles. With this intention in mind, a volume of this nature takes into account the close dependence of progress in the medical sciences on bioinformatics (gene and protein analysis) or more precisely, computational biology and of course, the Internet. In general, it follows the pattern of its predecessors.

                      Book Description

This book is an informal, readable introduction to the basic ideas of thermal physics. It is aimed at making the reader feel comfortable with the extremum principles of entropy and free energies. There is a repeating theme: Molecules (spins) do X to maximize their entropy, and molecules (spins) do XX to minimize their free energy. This finally leads to the idea of the Landau-Ginzburg free energy functional. The author illustrates how powerful the idea is by using two examples from phase transitions.

Contents: Introduction to Thermal Physics; All You Need to Know to Read the Rest; Isolated Thermal Systems; Systems in Contact with a Thermal Reservoir; Open Systems, Flexible Systems, and Two More Energy-like Functions; Energy versus Free Energy; Phases and Phase Transitions; Second-Order Phase Transitions; Landau-Ginzburg Free Energy Functional and Applications; Monte Carlo and Finite-Size Scaling.

                      5 out of 5 stars A very good overview.......2006-02-26

This book deserves to be quoted for all the people who want to have a short and very physical introduction to the subject. The book remains at an introductory level but the author covers a lot of subjects without loosing the physical intuition or interpretation at every stage of the text. It is true that the book won't help the student to master the calculations of thermodynamics and statistical physics, but since the introduction the author is very honest on this . A list of the books which may be read to give a further insight on the different chapters is given at the end.
This book has been written to give to the reader a physical understanding of the subject and of the logic behind the mathematical methods generally used in the context of thermal physics.
Surely someone already trained in (statistical) thermodynamics will even more enjoy the reading of this book.
The book is short, easy to read and not expensive (a quality which is not negligible for a science book). For my opinion it is a little jewel.

                      Book Description

Deeply shocking in its time, The Last Day of a Condemned Man is a profound and moving tale and a vital work of social commentary.

A man vilified by society and condemned to death for his crime wakes every morning knowing that this day might be his last. With the hope for release his only comfort, he spends his hours recounting his life and the time before his imprisonment. But as the hours pass, he knows that he is powerless to change his fate. He must follow the path so many have trod before him—the path that leads to the guillotine. With a Foreword by Libby Purves.

5 out of 5 stars A good quick read. Will force you to think a bit.......2006-06-22

Hugo speaks onto these pages, and mesmerizes. Although the actual story of this book is only 75 pages, it is packed with some of the ugliest parts of our society. The convict, the man sentenced to die, endures all angles of grief and horror, every emotion a deep-thinking man eventually realizes.
There was three or four events in the book that bring about the strongest arguments against the death penalty, and there is one scene that I'm sure will give me nightmares, which is rare for a book, much less a book by a classic writer, to have haunting images.
I believe that life is to be valued, and we should avoid taking it at all costs. As a nation, we should mourn not only the thousands that die as we enter a war, but yet, the thousands and hundreds of thousands that go against us, and are unfortunate to have a weaker gun, or less ammunition.
There should be penalties for crimes committed, but the book raises an excellent question: Do we have the right to take another person's life? In my logical line of thinking, I think if we're talking about Gacy or Dahmer, it's pretty cut and dry. But what about the mentally ill, the people to poor to afford a lawyer. Is it humane to justify the killing, because they have killed? True, it's a cliche argument, but prot was onto something when he envisioned that this WORLD was definitely backwards.

4 out of 5 stars A statement on death penalty.......2003-08-23

Victor Hugo `The last days of a condemned man'; more than a distressing tale, is a social comment at the atrocity of the death penalty. He brings a moralistic debate of the authority of government to take life of its citizen. Through the first narrative of the main character whose name and crime is unknown, he describes the torturous moments the captive undergoes up until his time of death. Through these moments he transforms the death penalty from a means of punishment to a state sponsored torture. In the novel he places a sublime message that it is mans tasks to save lives; and its gods to take life. The death penalty becomes a challenge by man to god's authority.

3 out of 5 stars A libel against the death penalty.......2003-02-13

The story is totally written in the first person, of a man condemned to the scafold, never the reader being told about who was the man and which crime did he commit. As the days passes, the end approaches and we begin to feel ourselves in that man's skin, suffering with him, groping for some way out of his whole misery. I suppose this is a book which must have caused a lot of controversy and anguish at the time of its first publication, but I am afraid that the impact is not the same today, with a lot of books and films showing the same theme, only changing the dreaded guillotine for the terrible electric chair. The book is a libel against the death penalty, something Victor Hugo did not manage to achieve in his lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Day of a Condemned Man: A Classic.......2003-01-17

After reading Les Miserables I bought The Last Day of a Condemned Man, I was not expecting an masterpiece like Les Miserables and, because of that, I had such a great surprise, it's a short book but with an energetic message, it shows the horrors of the condemned, the psycological efects in his person when hes own daughter do not recognize him, everiday expecting only death, and with feeling, truth and talent, Victor Hugo show us why the penalty of death is horrendous to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Relevant to Today!.......2001-11-07

I originally read the French version of this book, with a preface (which is probably in the English translation, no doubt) that is an essay of the reasons to abolish the death penalty. Abolishing "la peine de mort" was the point of this book, published in 1830, a year before Hugo published Notre-Dame de Paris (a.k.a. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame); Hugo was 27. The essay logically spells out why the death penalty should be abolished; the actual narrative of the story - a journal that the main character keeps of his every thought and feeling in the six weeks from his sentencing to the moment before he is taken to the Place de Greve to be guillotined - moves the reader emotionally. What was relevant in France in the 18th cent. is relevant in the U.S. today.

                                      Book Description

The Iraqi Kurds have enjoyed de facto statehood in the north of Iraq for over a decade but Intra-Kurdish fighting, military incursions by Turkey and Iran and the constant threat posed by Saddam Hussein have plagued this 'democratic experiment'. br In this book, Stansfield explores the development of the Kurdish political system since 1991. He examines the difficult and often violent relations between the two dominant powers, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and their relationship with the Kurdish Regional Government in order to understand the current state of Iraqi Kurdish politics and the operation of the state. br This topical in-depth study identifies the main dynamics of Iraqi Kurdish politics, analyses the record and potential of the 'Kurdish democratic experiment', and identifies the present and future Kurdish leaders.

2 out of 5 stars Iraqi Kurdistan: Political Development and Emergent Democracy.......2006-03-08

Iraqi Kurds hold five of the Iraqi Governing Council's twenty-five seats. Masud Barzani's Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Jalal Talabani's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) not only control an area the size of New Jersey, but since the fall of Saddam Hussein, they have expanded their sphere of influence inside Iraq. In November 2003, Talabani assumed Iraq's interim rotating presidency while the KDP's Hoshyar Zebari crisscrossed the globe as Iraq's new foreign minister.

Don't expect any reference to Iraq's new reality in Stansfield's study, written before Iraq's liberation. However, the KDP and PUK remain dominant in northern Iraq, and so Iraqi Kurdistan remains relevant. The author spent three years in Iraqi Kurdistan, interviewing politicians and observing the workings of government. He describes the structure of the two major Iraqi Kurdish political parties, as well as the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) umbrella under which they operate. His discussions of KDP and PUK decision-making distinguish between politicians who wield real influence and those who only hold a title.

Unfortunately, Stanfield's access contributes to Iraqi Kurdistan's main weakness. His analysis is often myopic, placing the Kurdish view front and center, but ignoring the reality of numerous other actors. It is curious, for example, how Stansfield can address the 1975 Algiers accords (which led to the collapse of the Kurdish uprising) without any mention of Henry Kissinger, who brokered the agreement that cut the Kurds off from their foreign patrons. Likewise, while chronicling the foundation of the PUK in Damascus, Stansfield mentions neither the Syrian government's role nor motivation. He breezes through Barzani's 1996 alliance with Saddam Hussein but fails to mention the Republican Guards' subsequent liquidation of Iraqi opposition forces. While corruption runs rampant, Stansfield prefers neat modeling and diagrams that confuse theoretical structure with on-the-ground reality. An accurate understanding of Kurdish politics simply is not possible without considering how Talabani and Barzani have compromised themselves for personal and political gain.

There are other gaps: with the exception of a single passing remark in the introduction, there is no mention of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) or the violent insurgency it waged against both major Iraqi Kurdish parties. There is only cursory mention of Barzani and Talabani's sophisticated intelligence networks and little mention of opposition tribal leaders Jowhar Sourchi or Karim Khan Bradosti, forced into exile as the Kurdish leaders consolidated their fiefdoms. Likewise, Stansfield ignores the Turkmen community, a small but active and politically complicated minority inside Iraqi Kurdistan.

Dry and detailed, Iraqi Kurdistan is well suited for a university library (and budget), but unless a reader wants to know who the minister of agriculture was in the second KRG cabinet, Stansfield's study should remain on the shelf.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Great!.......2005-10-07

I have read a vast quantity of books in my lifetime and believe that I have come across several great classics that fell through the cracks. This is one of them. There is hitch to this! It is parallel to the fate of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. The Jungle was written to agitate social change and hit the literal stomach instead. The Substance of Civilization was written for light scientific interest and hit the survivalist instinct instead.

I came across this book during the time of Y2K concerns. This is a pertinant survivalist handbook. It is how to start an economy from the literal dirt. I think this book draws the standard or baseline in answering, "How much science does an adult survivalist need to know?" Some people will find themselves short of science to meet this reasonable standard of scientific literacy. (I recommend the Beka science text books sold at Christian Liberty starting with the 4th grade. I think that is the one that teaches you how to measure the temperature through the use of a cricket. The 4th grade science book without meaning to unwinds those long descriptive garden walks in British 19th century novels. A reader is a little more clued in.)

5 out of 5 stars History is an alloy...........2005-07-03

"History is an alloy of all the materials that we have invented or discovered, manipulated, used, and abused, and each has its tale to tell." These are the words of the author,a professor of material sciences at Cornell University. He is obviously in love with the subject he teaches. He reminds me of one of my Chemistry professors who was in the lab on a Saturday afternoon when a student happened to come by,and said;"Do you have to work on Saturday's?" He replied;"Son this isn't work,it's my hobby." Reading this book, one gets the feeling you are just having a friendly discussion with him about the subject that is his work, interest, fascination, and most of all what his love resolves around.Just the opposite of a Librarian I was having a social chat with one day.I asked what she liked to read;and the reply stunned me."I really don't like to read much;I get too much of it at work every day".
Sass is a very good writer, particularly considering his profession.I don't say this as a slur;but generally good ,interesting writing is not the strong point of technical people.Carl Sagan is a great exception to this, and it shows Sass loves materials like Sagan loved the universe.Although I am an engineer, took courses in materials;I never heard them talked about like this.
Sass shows how materials have influenced civilizations from the Stone Age to the present time and will continue to do so for the future. Not only that, but there will be materials invented at an astonishing rate, even more so than the last half century.Just imagine the things that have become commonplace in that time and how much their existance is dependent on space age materials.Dreams are the ideas behind inventions;but materials are what makes them happen.
I read a lot of history, and particularly of warfare.I always believed that the one with the best weapon always wins the war. Now,after this excellent book,I have come to believe that the best weapon entails having the best materials to build them with.A great read.

                                      5 out of 5 stars What a terrific book!.......2004-07-04

Wow. I found this book more interesting than any other I've read in the last couple of years. It's a great introduction to an interesting field on which few people ever focus.

I'm a recovering English major who studied very little science in school but have been reading more science as an adult. But, of course, I've been limited by my lack of the technical background most science writing demands. This book (while it certainly doesn't ignore the science) does a reasonably good job of conveying the substance of the scientific principles involved in the field in a non-technical way (though I'll admit to some moments of saying "well, I THINK I understand what that meant.")

But what I really enjoyed is the way in which the author conveyed some of the historical and economic importance of materials science -- raising issues such as why the Romans didn't have steel or how a misunderstanding of the structure of aluminum had a direct impact upon the economy of post-WWII England. After finishing the book, I feel I have a new way of looking at the man-made world and an appreciation of its complexity that I'd missed before.

2 out of 5 stars Too literary for a textbook, not clever enough for else.......2003-04-07

The thesis of "The Substance of Civilization," by Stephen L. Sass, is that history is "an alloy of all the materials that we have invented or discovered, manipulated, used, and abused, and each has its tale to tell." Sass, a professor of materials science at Cornell, describes the principal difficulties, and how they were overcome, in the acquisition and manipulation of clay, copper, bronze, gold, silver, iron, glass, alloys, polymers, diamonds, composites, and silicon (coming in a sense full circle). In the chapter on glass, for example, we learn the difference in properties between thin and thick glass, and how the molecular structure of glass creates those properties. Then we see the history of glass, from speculation about the first glass glazes on 4000 B.C. clay pots to a brief discussion of optical fibers.
Sass is about as good at making his subject seem engaging as is the average high school professor. While his few amusing anecdotes are well chosen, they don't mesh well with the actual information, which is delivered like a series of slides. In his historical stories, he affects a clever, cynical style but often can't quite pull it off. Switching between materials science, macroengineering, and politics within a page is often a schizophrenic experience. "Substance" would have been better written as a textbook, and Sass is well equipped to write both the body and the sidebars. But this indexless, freeform structure serves more to conceal the usefulness of the book than to package it. With his intelligence and expertise, Sass was a few good decisions away from a readable book. He made very few of them.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading for anyone.......1999-06-20

Good historical overview of materials, interspersed with just enough scientific writing to keep the scientifically inclined layman interested. This book is a fascinating account of how civilization discovered and in turn was shaped by the most prosaic of things: The underlying, physical building blocks (I especially loved the discussion of the genesis of steel and its effects). I read it three times and bought two copies to give away as presents

In 1997 Scottish biologist Ian Wilmut successfully cloned a sheep, Dolly, in a controversial act many perceived as the first step toward human cloning. The Human Cloning Debate is the first book to present Wilmut's own thoughts on the troubling ramifications of this technology, along with essays by experts who explore the history and techniques of cloning, ethical issues, and the future possibilities. The previous edition was chosen as one of The New York Times's Top 100 Books for 1998.

4 out of 5 stars Useful collection of contributions to this important debate.......2004-11-04

This is a thought-provoking collection of essays by 25 contributors, pro- and anti-cloning, scientists, doctors, academics, researchers, journalists and the odd US President. The most mind-changing essay for this reviewer was Ronald Bailey's `Cloning babies is not inherently immoral'.
Throughout history, some have violently opposed scientific developments. For example, Guardian columnist Jeremy Rifkin described biotechnology as `a form of annihilation every bit as deadly as nuclear holocaust, and even more profound'. This dispute between science and anti-science, progress and reaction, the materialist and idealist philosophies, can never be resolved. It is a fundamental philosophic divide that cannot be bridged. One or other must prevail.

The argument that we must wait for a consensus to emerge is reactionary, for this would mean waiting forever. No amount of additional debate can ever win round the opposition to progress, because that opposition is entrenched behind ramparts of dogma; faith-based, it is impervious to evidence and reason.
Presidential calls for a moratorium are prevarication. Similarly, the search for absolute safety, like all searches for absolutes, is a delusion, which makes the precautionary principle another recipe for stasis.
Some who oppose cloning opposed In Vitro Fertilisation earlier. Possibly one million babies have been born through IVF since 1978. This safe and beneficial procedure arose from decades of refining techniques in a variety of animals. Safe cloning will similarly result from animal research: a ban on research would prevent work into making cloning safe.
In Germany the government has banned all research work on embryos, so Germany makes no contribution and has no influence on this matter. Britain's parliament passed a law that regulates therapeutic cloning, but unfortunately bans all efforts at reproductive cloning.
Fear of biotechnology has done great harm, because technological stagnation poses greater risks than technological innovation. Banning stem cell research or research into reproductive cloning would prevent many promising developments in medical research; it could drive research to countries less equipped to balance safety with development. The biotechnology revolution has already brought enormous benefits, IVF for instance, and will bring many more, but only if we encourage and support research into cloning.

                                      5 out of 5 stars The Debate.......2001-11-04

The human cloning debate provides a comprehensive view of the debate of human cloning and the ethical reasoning behind it. I learned that a sheep was not the first thing to be cloned, it was actually a piece of american cheese back in 1992. This book provides views from both sides of the spectrum and give you an unbias approach to your view on human cloning.

5 out of 5 stars Most Informative Book I have read yet this year.......2001-05-09

"The Human Cloning Debate" is the most informative book have read this year. The essays are fairly well balanced although there are more that are opposed than in favor. But, there are probably more people opposed to human cloning than are in favor. At any rate this is an excellent book.

There are several really good layman's descriptions of exactly what the biological results of cloning are. Big surprise, it is not what the media have led us to believe. On the other hand knowing the exact results does not seem to change the preponderance of opinion one way or the other.

One of the best essays in the book for describing the science was written by Phillip Kitcher, although I think the conclusions he reached were totally off base. He wrote "Reality is much more sobering, and it is a good idea to preface debates about the morality of human cloning with a clear understanding of the scientific facts" To many of us forced our ideas about cloning before we knew the facts.

Perhaps the whole debate was summed up in a single sentence written by Jonathan R. Cohen n his essay "Cloning in Jewish Thought". "Ultimately, cloning challenges us to consider how important our genetic structure is to our sense of self."

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the ethical debate surrounding cloning.

This is a great collection of strong opinions on the new LD topic about genetic engineering. We used it for cards and to get us acquainted with the whole shebang.

We looked at several cloning books for our coffeehouse conversations series. This was the only one with good science as well as provocative ethics material. The article by Art Caplan and the religious material are excellent. This is the only book with an article by cloning scientists in it, and I found Ian Wilmut's perspective on the difference between adoption and cloning to be fascinating.
