Book Description
What's Wrong contains data from hundreds of public opinion surveys conducted over the past sixty years, distilled in easy-to-read tables.
Book Description
In 1989 strange things began to happen in these United States. Musicians and music store owners were charged with crimes for singing songs or selling tapes and records. The U.S. Congress passed a resolution condemning a major museum for permitting a display that "encourages disrespect for the flag." The federal arts funding agency was accused of blasphemy for assisting artists whose work dealt with religious themes. And so "censorship" became a key word in political debate. In Sex, Sin, and Blasphemy, the founding director of the ACLU Arts Censorship Project discusses the most hotly contested censorship issues.
Customer Reviews:
I'm really the first to review this???.......2004-12-12
On moral grounds it would be simply impossible to find fault with Sex, Sin, and Blasphemy, a brief but broad overview by Marjorie Heins of the attempts by self-appointed morality police to control what Americans say, see, hear, and think. As a reader of typically scholarly history books, Heins comes off as a bit raw around the edges, and certainly partisan in her approach. Good. The history of this abominable mindset of censorship is brought out to us as a warning and a guide to the here and now. Though first published in 1993 and updated slightly in 1998, it couldn't be timelier than right now. Seriously, I'm not just making a platitude. With the inmates of the asylum running the FCC and no end of oppressive socially conservative government in sight, we need a clear headed and perhaps slightly shrill warning about the nonsense that comes from the holier-than-thou thought police.
Wow, now that I've finished the harshest opening paragraph of any review I've done to date, let's see what's in the book. Overall, as expected, the topics all revolve around the first amendment free speech rights supposedly enjoyed by all Americans (actually, by pretty much anyone in the country, citizen or not). From the start Heins points out that the first is often treated as a second class amendment, and has been routinely abused or ignored by the courts and legislatures, as well as by lesser powered government agencies in the form of city and town governments and local police forces. Topically, Heins goes over threats against and outright bans of free expression in societal culture such as movies, music, or art. Besides outright bans, such as the repulsive Hayes code for motion pictures (the code that kept movie married couples sleeping is widely separated beds, and just where do babies come from in such a universe anyway?), we also get a recap of the music warning label sticker controversy of the eighties. Heins also takes a look at a lesser-publicized form of abuse in the form of "friendly" warnings to store owners by local police forces and city agencies. If you can't ban something, just scare businesses away from it. Cheap, effective, and completely unaccountable. Even blasphemy is covered (didn't that go out with the inquisition?). And of course, Heins also looks at pornography (real pornography, not just what prudes find discomforting), why efforts to ban it are silly, and how the few allowed forms of censorship (against kiddie porn with actual kids) is frequently twisted into a legal monstrosity. Mostly in the form of brief case studies, Heins never misses a chance to editorialize. That is, after all, what the book is for. Though short and a quick read, I found it a highly satisfactory one even as it made me sick to be reminded that such knuckle draggers have actual power in our society. And yes, Heins produces a brief list of ideas on how to fight back.
I doubt this will be the final word on censorship. As I write this in December of 2004, and looking back at my opening lines, it is clear that the problem is not currently getting better. Though Heins writes frequently on this topic, perhaps it's time for an update. In one sense the book feels very old in that I recall no mention being made of the Internet. But other than this lack of up-to-the-minute coverage, you'll find here a concise and morally clear recap of the wars between thought and senselessness.

Book Description
The Campanha of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, situated on the northern periphery of the pampa grassland system, is one of Brazil’s most distinctive cultural regions. This book studies land use in the Campanha during a period of critical change, focusing on two issues: Why did the modernization of ranching in the region display sharply uneven patterns in time and space? What were the mechanisms that drove these changes?
The book first describes the world of the gaúcho, a highly extensive, open-range ranching economy. It then examines why technical innovations in ranching (such as new breeds of cattle, fencing, and refrigeration) came later to the Campanha than in Argentina and Uruguay. Ultimately, the Campanha was drawn increasingly into the North Atlantic economic system, and the concomitant ranching innovations engendered cultural conflict that marginalized the gaúcho way of life.
Though the regional economy was still based mainly on hides and salt-beef, the author shows how railways, tariffs, and the abolition of slavery laid the groundwork for a slow but sustained transformation of Campanha ranching. Important structural obstacles slowed development: national political support for reforming legal aspects of property rights in this peripheral region was weak; linkages between domestic elites and foreign merchants were insubstantial; and Rio Grande do Sul’s infrastructure and attraction of foreign capital remained limited. Although the pace of change in the Campanha quickened with the extraordinary food demands of World War I, the structural legacy of uneven development continued to hamper growth after 1920.
Customer Reviews:
compare with the American and Canadian ranches.......2006-05-31
Bell's book gives the reader an appreciation of the immensity of Brazil, and of its efforts to modernise in the 19th and 20th centuries, as exemplified by the ranches of the Campanha. A non-Brazilian reader might be more familiar with how the US or Canada developed their ranches. Indeed, there are clear parallels with what Bell describes for Brazil. Like the introduction of fencing, especially barbed wire, which led to the closing of much of the plains. So also with the vast efforts needed to bring the livestock to market; especially for the European market.
Generally, the book shows how the Brazilians had a harder time of it than the Americans or Canadians. Further from Europe. Plus, unlike the American ranchers, there was not as large or wealthy a domestic market. For the US, this proved invaluable in underwriting the railroads and stockyards.

Book Description
The ongoing growth of human populations within US coastal regions continues to increase habitat loss, eutrophication, organic loading, overfishing, and other anthropogenic stressors in estuarine waters. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is a federally funded initiative that addresses these critical estuarine problems and coastal resource issues at 25 sites in 21 states. Now estuarine and watershed scientists, resource managers, community planners, and other professionals dealing with coastal zone issues have an expert resource describing the NERRS program, organization, goals, and management strategy. Estuarine Research, Monitoring, and Restoration first defines the components and technical aspects of the NERRS program, then provides valuable insight into the program through the presentation of six case studies of NERRS sites. This book examines estuarine problems including degraded water quality, reduction of biodiversity, and problematic invasive species, then analyzes the human impacts affecting estuaries. The comprehensive analysis of the six estuarine reserve locations characterizes each region's physical, chemical, and biological conditions from the perspective of the NERRS program. These case studies include a cross section of sites from three coasts, each study emphasizing the importance of unified efforts of government and citizens to successfully maintain the ecology of these critical areas.

Red Hook
Confessions of a Brooklyn Eaglet: 1939-1955
With Richard Gambino's Red Hook (Confessions of a Brooklyn Eaglet: 1939-1955) Guernica Editions is proud to inaugurate its newest series, the City Series. Red Hook is a humorous, poignant, whimsical account of growing up in a long-ago neighbourhood which was as improbable a place as any one might imagine. Jumping back and forth from one age to another, it is presented through the eyes of a boy as he lived and saw life there. Red Hook describes experiences which would not ordinarily be associated with living in New York, or any other large city. Through anecdote and humour the author sets out to explain how he learned to see life, and what formed him as a writer.
Richard Gambino grew up in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Book Description
Between 1364 and 1477 a dramatic struggle played out between the Duchy of Burgundy and the French kings. This enthralling phase of history was embodied in the lives of four dukes--Philip the Bold, John the Fearless, Philip the Good, and Charles the Rash--who ruled Burgundy at the time and dared challenge the power of France. With sweeping pageantry, here is the history of each duke, his policies, varying successes, and the civilizing values of his glorious sponsorship.
Customer Reviews:
Probably the best source in English.......2005-09-17
The duchy of Burgundy in the 14th and 15th centuries was remarkable - and very fortunate - in having a dynasty of four Valois dukes, one after another, who were superior to most of their peers in intelligence, charisma, political perspicacity, and sheer magnificence. Philip "the Bold" was shrewd and a patron of the arts, John "the Fearless" was almost too ambitious for his own good, Philip "the Good" almost took the throne of France, and Charles "the Rash" went toe-to-toe with Louis XI, the first modern ruler in terms of cold-blooded nationalism. Calmette was a leading authority on this period and he spends some time specifically on the evolution of Burgundy from a weak kingdom to a more powerful duchy and on the problems of dynastic succession. This is arguably the best general study of ducal Burgundy available in English. Be aware, though, that several egregious errors were made in drawing the genealogical charts.
Wearing its age well.......2003-06-30
Despite being fifty years old, Calmette's short study of the four great Dukes of Burgundy remains the best overall introduction in English to this rich and fascinating subject. His approach is largely narrative and political/dynastic in focus, but cultural and other matters are not ignored.
Calmette's patriotic French stance on the perfidy of the Burgundian alliance with England seems somewhat surprising until one remembers he was writing very shortly after the War.
One subject that does show the book's age is 15th century music. Our appreciation of Early Music has grown so much since Calmette's day that we now account the music of Binchois, Dufay, Busnois, Ockeghem and so on as among the greatest ever written and one of the glories of the Burgundian court. In Calmette's book, this topic rates but a solitary footnote.
On final and small point, the back cover translates Charles le Téméraire as 'Charles the Rash', while the text calls him 'Charles the Bold'. Calmette unflinchingly documents the last Duke's repeated blunders which destroyed the superb creation assembled by his three predecessors. Charles the Rash is by far the better description. Let us all vow to use that name in everyday speech until the unmerited title of Charles the Bold fades from our language.
Book Description
Science, it would seem, is neither all good nor all bad. It gives us nuclear accidents and cures for disease, agricultural self-sufficiency and death in space flight. Harry Collins and Trevor Pinch liken science to the Golem, a creature from Jewish mythology, powerful yet potentially dangerous, a gentle, helpful creature that may yet run amok at any moment. Through a series of intriguing case studies of famous and not-so-famous scientific episodes, ranging from relativity and cold fusion to memory in worms and the sex lives of lizards, the authors debunk the idea that science is the straightforward result of competent theorisation, observation and experimentation. Closer to the truth, they suggest, is the realisation that scientific certainty comes from interpreting ambiguous results within an order imposed by scientists themselves. This thought-provoking account will give general readers a new perspective on the place of science in society. â~⦠perverse but entertaining ⦠the writing is deft, the stories are good and there is not a boring page.â Nature â~⦠a must for every science student.â Science Reporter
Customer Reviews:
pulp science.......2006-11-23
This book simply masquerades as a scholarly book. Yes, it was printed by Cambridge University Press, and yes, both Collins and Pinch are professors. But this book is as scientific as People Magazine. Like People magazine, this book was written for the non-scientist, who may not be able to tell good scholarship from bad. Book sales rather than scholarship appear to be the goal.
The first edition contains numerous typos; four in a single chapter. This sloppy treatment is also evident in the underlying logical flaws. And, for the most part, the book has very few footnotes, which leaves you wondering where they got their revisionist information from.
This book has a clear anti-science message. For example, Louis Pasteur, famed for his careful experiments, is wrongly painted as a manipulative bumbler. Again, without footnotes, it's hard to see how Collins and Pinch came to this conclusion, which contradicts almost every other biography of Pasteur.
The book claims to be an examination of science, but the seven subjects this book examines are hardly representative. It's as if you found seven dishonest sports figures, and then used them to prove that every sports figure is dishonest.
Creationists love this book for it's anti-science viewpoint, perhaps because the methods are the same: slant your story to fit with your pre-conceived opinion; when evidence exists to the contrary, simply say the data is wrong, or the system is biased.
The back cover says it all; the authors believe scientists are not competent, but the evidence is so thin that one believes the incompetence lies elsewhere.
aligning science studies.......1998-09-24
Collins is a big shot in science studies. He introduced a rather strong research tradition in the sociology of science. There he looks at controversies in science and shows that scientific truth is being produced continously by the scientists. Basically, his point is that science is a social enterprise, done by people and that social mechanisms are inherent to scientific results and by no means just flaws in a otherwise pure science.
This little book gives a collection of various case-studies (from relativity to para-science) that have been given a treatment of this kind. The different topics make it easy and interesting to read and show that the same mechanisms work in any scientific field. I particularly like the book because it relates various case-studies that otherwise have little in common with one another.
Book Description
Organized across national boundaries and with millions of supporters worldwide, transnational environmental activist groups such as Greenpeace, the World Wildlife Fund, and Friends of the Earth play a central role in the way the world addresses environmental issues. This book provides the most systematic and theoretically informed study to date of the strategies these organizations use to advance global environmental protection. Based on case studies of three transnational groups, it argues that in addition to lobbying governments, activists operate within and across societies to effect widespread change. They work through transnational social, economic, and cultural networks to alter corporate practices, educate vast numbers of people, pressure multilateral development banks, and shift standards of good conduct. Wapner argues that because this activity takes place outside the formal arena of inter-state politics, environmental activists practice "world civic politics"; they politicize global civil society. The theoretical import of this book is to bring the practice of world civic politics into sharp relief and generalize its significance beyond environmental affairs to explain the efforts of all NGOs in world politics.
