1 out of 5 stars Little useful content, master of the obvious.......2007-08-12

This book was part of a class taught by the author. The class and the book are complete fluff. This book could conceivably be condensed into 25 to 50 pages and still make the same points.

1 out of 5 stars OK...But...A ***LOT*** of FLUFF!.......2006-08-08

Not a bad book. It had some interesting pointers...BUT...as the title suggests... A LOT OF FLUFF!!!

It's not bad for the price (I URGE you to get a cheap USED copy)... but the same author has a MUCH stronger book called "Networking Smart". Very Good!

I gave this one star for the content... what was there, anyway.

5 out of 5 stars The real scoop on "networking".......2004-03-15

There are numerous books on "networking," with titles like "how to work a room." The theme is to get lots of names of people that you can call when you want to sell them something.

Wayne Baker is a respected researcher of social networks. This book gives a step-by-step method of analyzing one's own social networks and through them, learning more about oneself. These social networks are not groups of people that you socialize with, but rather the core people that make up your life, your family, your co-workers and others.

Having diverse social networks is a good indicator of many metrics of success and happiness. People with diverse social networks make more money, get promoted faster, ... they even get fewer colds. But how diverse is your social network? How can you improve it? This book shows how to figure it out and teaches about social networks while doing it.

2 out of 5 stars In like a lion out like a lamb.......2002-09-24

After an interesting and thoughtful start in Chapter 1 - I found the rest of this work to be very light and not very useful.
I read several other books in an effort to hone my corporate political skills in addition to this one, including 'NetWorlding' and 'PeopleSmart' before finding one that had the depth and subject treatment I was looking for. Check out 'The Secret Handshake' by Kathleen Kelley Reardon, Ph.D.
that's my take - loopster - Chicago

5 out of 5 stars "Potential" Means "You Ain't Done It Yet".......2000-09-13

This volume is one in the University of Michigan Business School Management Series. As Baker explains in the Executive Summary, "This book guides you through the process of evaluating, building, and using social capital." With precision and eloquence, Baker focuses on HOW to take full advantage of what he calls "hidden resources" in both personal and business networks. For example, in ideas, leads, business opportunities, financial capital, power and influence, emotional support, even goodwill, trust, and cooperation. Social capital consists of who you know, who knows you, and shared opportunities for you and them to derive mutual benefit. "The goal of building social capital as an organizational competence is the same as building it as an individual competence -- to increase the ability to achieve goals, fulfill missions, and make positive contributions to the world." Throughout the book's five chapters, Baker answers questions such as these:

* What is social capital?

* Why can it be so important to you?

* How to measure and evaluate your social capital?

* What are the most effective strategies for building entrepreneurial networks? (Baker suggests 30.)

* How to derive greatest benefit from your own social capital?

* How to build social capital as a competence within your organization?

If you seek answers to questions such as these, this book is "must reading."

    Book Description

`In this new book a group of 18 distinguished authors presents comprehensive surveys of current issues in the field of finance and development. . . This book nicely bridges the gap between general research on the role of finance for economic growth and the role finance plays for developing economies and poverty reduction. . . Moreover, the authors identify a great number of promising ideas for future research. . .' - Ryszard Kokoszczynski, SUERF Newsletter - The European Money & Finance Forum

In the last two decades, the role of finance in the development process has become a major topic of research and debate. Although it is widely agreed that there is an important link between the two, there is much less consensus on the exact nature of the relationship. Is financial development a prerequisite for general economic development, or is it a more passive by-product of the development process?

In this valuable new book, a distinguished group of authors takes stock of the existing state of knowledge in the field of finance and the development process. Each chapter offers a comprehensive survey and synthesis of current issues. These include such critical subjects as savings, financial markets and the macroeconomy, stock market development, financial regulation, foreign investment and aid, financing livelihoods, microfinance, rural financial markets, small and medium enterprises, corporate finance and banking.

This book will be accessible to postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students of finance and development. It will also be an essential reference source for all professionals and academics working in this area who want to learn how finance can contribute to the development process and poverty reduction.

              Book Description

Strategies of Sex includes verses by a physician-scientist member of the National Academy of Sciences that are a celebration of the diversity of arrangements (often bizarre) that ensure the propagation of species, from Anableps to surgeonfish. The result is somewhere between Cole Porter ("bees do it") and Elizabeth Barrett Browning ("let me count the ways..") with a touch of Ogden Nash.

Book 1, focuses on the title topic, Strategies of Sex. Pudgy moorhens, hairy-legged fruit flies, doubly endowed four-eyed fish - whatever turns you on - they are all here, immortalized with grace and style. The price of too much male enthusiasm is described in "The Ballad of Howie" a four-eyed fish blessed (?) with two sex organs, and in "Never on Sunday, Hunday" about a bull who sired too many calves before dying of exhaustion. In the case of the fruit fly, Melanogaster, "acts of millisecond brevity interfere with his longevity". But female promiscuity is the subject of "The Round-Heeled Snakes of Sweden."

Book 2, Annotated Animals, defines the "zoo out there" in which the implicit verbal defamation of the Slow Loris is decried and doubts are expressed on the arrival of a "Tiny Pale Whale" at Coney Island. If that isn't news, then read "The Hippopota-news" or about the dog, man's best friend, with "no control at either end".

Book 3 covers - in verse and in prose - a sample of Humanity's Inanities. The author has taken license to indulge in a mixed bag of philosophical musings, including an obsession with proper English, ("More Importantly").

                Book Description

"Medical scientists use the word `iatrogenic' to refer to disabilities that are the consequence of medical treatment. We believe that some such word might be coined to refer to philosophical difficulties for which philosophers themselves are responsible" Sir Peter Medawar Arguing that quantum theory as it stands is perhaps the most comprehensive, well-verified, and successful theory in the history of science, the author clears away the impression that it is an incomplete, philosophically flawed, and self-contradictory theory. In simple terms accessible to anyone with a little prior knowledge of science, Wallace examines the numerous "paradoxes" and "difficulties" claimed for quantum mechanics, and shows that they are due to excesses of interpretation that have been imposed on the theory.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars free your mind from Copenhagen prison.......2001-07-02

The human mind has been in a mental prison for about 70 years. People have lost their relation to objective reality and live in a state of intellectual schizophrenia. People who don't understand a bit of Quantum mechanics are speculating on the nonsense of "role of observer" the "loss of objective reality" etc. Physics-students whose brains are already conditioned by established interpretation (Copenhagen interpretation) don't realize the contradictions inherent to it and accept the nonsense as the "new way of thinking".

Some who have not lost their minds try to take refuge in Bohm's theory or Everett's/David Deutsch's Many world interpretations that are both unfortunately dead ends.

This book is an important step to free the minds from this mental prison. I agree with almost everything that is written in it. The only reservations I have about the book are about the quantum nonlocality. He is correct that the two photons emitted in EPR type experiment in opposite directions overlap throughout the space because "both" are spherical waves. But this alone doesn't explain how a change in wave function that occurs in a measurement at some point can influence a change of the wave function at a very far point almost instantaneously as the experimental evidence indicates. Thus I suspect nnonlocality is a fact we cannot circumvent. The only possible reconciliation of an EPR event with special relativity may be that there are no superluminal quantummechanical currents associated with an EPR event. However this is a minor technical disagreement.

I recommend the book strongly to anyone who is interested in quantum mechanics and specially to professionals working in the field of physics. ....

4 out of 5 stars Debunking and Demystifying.......2001-02-02

Not for the novice, this is a very dense book with little breathing room. But what a great antidote for all the popular books that purport to explain quantum by (paradoxically) perpuating the beauty of paradox! As a Zen paradoxes hinge on semantic ambiguity, incongruities in quantum theory arise when they (or experimental results) are described in inappropriate terms. The problem is not with the theory, the problem is that the theory is expected to explain every detail of "reality". The author argues that this is not scientifically possible, so when science is expected to fill the role of philosophy or religion, is it any wonder that people can make up thought experiments that make no logical sense?

Still, just what ARE the correct interpretations of those wierd quantum properties?

5 out of 5 stars Don't try to talk about QM without reading this book!.......1999-12-24

What a breath of fresh air this book is! Finally, a clear and cogent explanation that all the supposed paradoxes of Quantum Mechanics are the result of our attempts to translate airtight mathematical concepts into flawed natural language - while trying deperately to maintain outdated ideas about the subatomic world (such as the idea that electrons are little tennis balls). The observer creates the phenomenon? Don't be ridiculous. Faster than light communication? Nonsense. Every New-Age guru and all their followers should study this book - do you hear me, Deepak Chopra? I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you want to use the words 'Quantum Mechanics' in a sentence, read this book first. You might learn something.

This is a lively and accessible introduction to some of the greatest works of political thought. Written by a team of specialist contributors, there are chapters on Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Politics, Augustine's City of God, Machiavelli's Discourses and The Prince, Hobbes's Leviathan, and Locke's Second Treatise on Government. Concentrating on the ideas contained in the texts themselves, the guide also helps readers understand why these classics remain indispensable today.

                  1 out of 5 stars A Wasted opportunity.......2004-11-30

It is surprising that Fitzroy Dearborn have so little pride in the Publishing and Printing arts as to produce this book. The general quality is very poor - many of the photos (ALL are B+W) are so fuzzy as to look as if they have been photocopied through a multiple series from the original, as well as often signally failing to capture the essence of the location. The inside cover map, of eg The Northern Europe volume, sets the "accuracy standard" by placing Jarlshof and Skara Brae (actually on Shetland and Orkney respectively) on Skye and Islay!
There will of course always be arguments as to which sites deserve entry - just under 200 have been chosen for N Europe but the space could have been used far more productively to allow double this. The essays are often rambling and seem designed to "just" extend to a fourth or fifth page the remainder of which is then left blank. The aforementioned nondescript photos are often full page too and the general layout is very wasteful fo space. As a result this book cannot be said to even begin to approach a "definitive" list of "Historic Places"
The contributors seem a very "motley" bunch with a surprising number of "Freelance writers" whose CVs offer no particular evidence of expertise in their chosen site. Eg The Brussels entry (Not bad but not to mention that city's Art Nouveau architecture is a major gap) is written by someone whose claim to fame is to have written "Keeping Kids Drug-free".
There is still an opportunity for someone to produce a good survey of the World's historic sites. This book (and the series of which it is a part) fails miserably.

4 out of 5 stars A good coverage of social, cultural and economic history ........2000-03-31

Having been challenged by interpretations, and analyzing the assumptions behind the concept of Western civilization, The Western Experience presents a confused panorama about what Western Civilization is all about. Is European Civilization the civilization of Modern Europe and America excluding Australia? The concept of civilization is avoided in spite of the fact that the text was designed to provide an analytical and comprehensive account of the processes by which European society and civilization evolved. Civilization is defined as just a social organization with more complex rules than those of the cavemen. The proper concept of civilization is not treated in a rational and coherent manner. How does the narrative around selected recurring themes fit together under a broader concept of civilization in order to understand the continuing thread of developmment of the so-called western civilization? How do you distinguish one civilization from another in space and in time?

5 out of 5 stars Great book for young experimenters.......1999-10-07

The book is great for young experimenters. Easy to follow instructions and clever writing get kids into the 'science is fun' mindset. The 'Food for thought' section that accompanies each activity explains the science behind the activity clearly and with the right amount of detail for the intended audience. (Tested on my 10-year-old son). Each activity concludes with a 'More to chew on' section that enables kids to relate what they've observed to other examples of the same principle. Many of the activities focusing on static electricity, air pressure and buoyancy could be used for elementary school science fair projects. There is an awesome demonstration of center of gravity. Other activities deal with sense of touch, taste and smell. There are a couple of activities exploring optics. The scientific method and related concepts are introduced. The illustrations are extremely helpful in diagramming the text. Older kids (and adults) will enjoy the reading for the subtle titles like 'Stop Making Cents' and 'A Salt and Gravity'.
