In the next three chapters, the impact of globalization on organizations and people in specific countries is examined. These chapters report on the forces of the global economy and its tremendous effect in the lives of its workers as they have moved from state-controlled economies and politics to democracy and capitalism. Chapter four looks at HRD in Russia, chapter five examines management development in the new Romania, and chapter six describes how executives experience learning at Compaq-China.

The author uses a lot of wordy language to make simple concepts complicated. Also I agree with another review: there is a lot of macroeconomics. I think Dr. Shapiro needs to understand how his readers learn, not how he can enjoy his writing.

Can be confusing, major focus on economics.......1999-06-11

This textbook may not be a good choice for undergraduate students or for someone who does not have an intermediate or higher knowledge of finance. Wording in the chapters and in the end of chapter problems can be confusing. Statements are made and then not backed up with supporting information. The book spends a large amount of time on a macroeconomic view.

Excellent book........1999-06-11

We adopted this book during the first semester of 1999 with excellent results. Our students were delighted with the practical approach, and the breadth of its contents. Recently our country has been through a monetary turmoil, and the book served very much to explain the policies that our local central bank authorities have been pursuing.

It is not a study guide, and gives no real helpful tips. It is no help whatsoever for someone who has already taken the test and needs to retest for a better score.

What the previous writer wrote was absolutely true. Do not count on this book helping you for the NTE test. I bought this book and went over it. From it I thought the test would not be bad at all. How wrong I was. The test was MUCH tougher than this lightweight book let on. Don't buy it - go elsewhere for preparation.

OK review but 87 pages.......1997-09-22

Science is one field that if you are older than 3 years out in research its an oldie. This booklet is 87 pages. You can get to Cliffnote like and do a disservice and I think this is true of this. The test is harder than the content prepares you for. The need for stronger microbiology and genetics is needed. Safety in the classroom and reporting proceedures should be stressed more. The diagrams are helpful. This book would be better at 200 plus pages. Therefore I recommend the teacher or teacher candidate put a bookmark by http://mypage.ihost.com/asap

This book presents the essential aspects of relativistic quantum field theory, with minimal use of mathematics. It covers the development of quantum field theory from the original quantization of electromagnetic field to the gauge field theory of interactions among quarks and leptons. Aimed at both scientists and non-specialists, it requires only some rudimentary knowledge of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation of Newtonian mechanics and a basic understanding of the special theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.

Elegant description of QFT and fundamental issues........2005-06-07

If you are an aficionado of popular physics and want to peer behind the curtains to see where some possible weaknesses have been swept under the rug, this is an excellent book. M.Y. Han has written an elegantly terse (107 pages) book which describes how Quantum Field Theory has evolved and been applied to Electrodynamics, the Weak Nuclear and Strong Nuclear force. To fully appreciate the book requires more education than a mere B.S. in physics which is the way the marketing description reads. Nonetheless, if you are an avid reader of Brian Greene, Steven Weinberg, and Gordon Kane, you will get a lot out of this little tome.

Han shows how in the case of Quantum Electrodynamics that Quantum Field Theory has worked spectacularly well. Because of this, QFT has been extended and emulated to explain the Weak and Strong nuclear interactions despite little problems such as the lack of renormalization in the case of the Strong Force and the massive bosons in the case of the Weak Force. The title, "A Story of Light" alludes to the fact that QED has shown the way for the other forces of the Standard Model.

Han raises the question whether this emulation is valid. For example, just because quantization of the electromagnetic field leads to photons, is it valid for all matter fields to be considered quanta of their own quantized field? Or is it valid to apply the "substitution rule" from classical electrodynamics to non-electrodynamic interactions? Just because QED happens to obey a gauge symmetry law, is it valid to raise that to a principle of physics and apply it to the Weak and Strong forces?

The book might reach a broader audience if a few more pages were devoted to explaining mathematical preliminaries such as special unitary groups and tensor representations of electromagnetic laws. I bet that this would be a useful book to graduate students who want to clearly understand the big QFT picture before diving into the details.

Writing a one-volume history of the world is a project fraught with peril: in such a book, surely something important will be left out, glossed over, missed. Hugh Thomas does a better job than most, especially in his attention to the material basis for human society--the farming, mining, stockraising, and industry that keep us fed and clothed. He has a sweeping view of historical trends, such as the worldwide emergence of kingship and the inevitable collapse of empires. Thomas's view is resolutely Eurocentric, and he passes by Asian history with a swift glance. With that fault in mind, however, the reader will find in Thomas's pages a handy and very well-written work of historical reference.
