    Book Description

This book examines changing work relationships in industrialized economies within the context of economic restructuring and demographic variables. The goal of this book is to examine experiences of industrialized economies in dealing with changing work relationships and discuss policy implications of creating such work relationships. The thesis of the book is that non-standard employment forms in restructuring economies affected all workers, but particularly females and the youth. Other demographic variables of education level, race/ethnicity/immigrant status, ability, and economic class were also underlying forces in the construction and arrangements of non-standard work. Research shows both positive and negative effects of changing work relationships on workers, though there is no conclusive result whether one or the other affect is stronger. The discussion in this book pays attention to this debate and sheds light on it. This book differs from others in its comprehensiveness of the coverage of work relationships, referring to part-time, temporary/ casual, telework and self-employment without employees; in its examination of a variety of variables including gender, age, race/ethnicity/immigrant status, ability, education level, and economic class; in the analysis of the topic in relation with the economic restructuring; and in its initiative in collaboration of researchers from a variety of backgrounds and regions of the world that have expertise on changing work relationships. Contributions by: I.U. Zeytinoglu and J.K. Muteshi; S. Nollen; D.G. Gallagher; A. Templer, M. Armstrong-Stassen, K. Devine and N. Solomon; L. Delsen; D. Meulders and R. Plasman; J. Druker; M. Quinlan and C. Mayhew; L. Hinton, J. Moruz and C. Mumford; C. Strby Jensen; H. Bielenski and E. Khler.

      Book Description

The analysis of integrated and cointegrated time series can be considered as the main methodology employed in applied econometrics. This book not only introduces readers to this topic but also enables them to conduct the various unit root tests and cointegration methods by utilizing the free statistical programming environment R. The book encompasses seasonal unit roots, fractional integration, coping with structural breaks, and inference in co-integrated vector autoregressive models. The book is enriched by numerous programming examples to artificial and real data so that it is suitable as a supplementary text for computer lab classes.

Bernhard Pfaff studied economics at the universities of Göttingen, Germany; Davis, California; and Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. He obtained a diploma and a doctorate degree at the economics department of the last one where he was employed as a research and teaching assistant. He has worked for many years as economist and quantitative analyst in research departments of financial institutions. Bernhard Pfaff is the author and maintainer of the contributed R package "urca".

      From the reviews:

"All in all, it is a book by which the usage of R for analyzing time series with the mentioned tools will surely be inhanced. It is hoped that the series expands further with similar well done texts." Allgemeines Statistisches Archive, vol. 90, No. 3, pgs 486-487

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Short Book.......2007-05-12

The UseR! series from Springer aims to be a series of short, focused books on implementation topics using the R statistical environment. Bernard Pfaff does a good job of presenting a good though brief overview that covers ARMA, stationarity, and cointegration. The math is not too heavy for the practitioner without a deep academic background, and the code examples are relevant and concise, demonstrating the concepts well. The book also does a reasonable job of integrating graphics into the analysis, which can greatly aid in understanding.

4 out of 5 stars a user manual for R.......2006-05-17

A concise little book for a specialised audience. You might think of this as a user manual for R. It goes into some depth about how to apply R in analysis of time series data.

The book also shows why R faces little competition from Mathematica or Maple. Those are general purpose maths packages. R is optimised for a narrow field. The graphics shown in the text are two dimensional plots of various types. Nothing flashy; no colour for instance. But perfectly adequate for the serious researcher.

If you are doing research on Russian organized crime in any kind of depth, this book is a must-have. Extremely comprehensive, with essays by a variety of experts on the subject, all with different perspectives and angles by which they discourse on the topic.

This book also cites endless more sources for further reading within the text itself, providing not only multiple sources due to the varying authors but even more sources in the footnotes and endnotes.

Not to mention there is a primary source of the documentation of an investigation of Russian emigres in New York, along with other diagrams and statistics useful and understandable.

Well-written and concise, "The New Threat?" is an extremely useful and wide-ranging collection of essays ideal for preliminary research on this topic.

It may seem pricey, but if you are looking for information about the Red Mafiya, it is WELL worth the price.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2000-10-13

This book provides access to many of the great works on Russian Organized Crime. The book helped to give me a broader and more complete look of Russian Criminal organizations. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about ROC.

                  Book Description

This volume is designed to celebrate and re-assess the work of John Dryden (1631-1700) in the tercentenary year of his death. It assembles specially-commissioned essays by an international team of scholars who address Dryden's political writing, drama, and translations, his literary collaborations, contemporary reputation, and posthumous reception. Much of Dryden's work was written in response to contemporary events and issues, and several of the essays in this volume discuss the personal and public circumstances in which his works were composed and received, exploring his responses to popular politics, and his relations with Congreve, Milton, Purcell, and Shadwell. But Dryden's intellectual and imaginative world was also shaped by the work of his literary predecessors, and so the collection charts his creative engagement with classical poetry, especially Homer and Virgil. Other essays attend to his poetic self-representation, his philosophical vision, and the problem of editing Dryden's poetry for a modern readership. The collection as a whole presents him as a writer not only for an age, but for all time.

                        Book Description

The presidential election of 1884, in which Grover Cleveland ended the Democrats' twenty-four-year presidential drought by defeating Republican challenger James G. Blaine, was one of the gaudiest in American history, remembered today less for its political significance than for the mudslinging and slander that characterized the campaign. But a closer look at the infamous election reveals far more complexity than previous stereotypes allowed, argues Mark Summers. Behind all the mud and malarkey, he says, lay a world of issues and consequences.

Summers suggests that both Democrats and Republicans sensed a political system breaking apart, or perhaps a new political order forming, as voters began to drift away from voting by party affiliation toward voting according to a candidate's stand on specific issues. Mudslinging, then, was done not for public entertainment but to tear away or confirm votes that seemed in doubt. Uncovering the issues that really powered the election and stripping away the myths that still surround it, Summers uses the election of 1884 to challenge many of our preconceptions about Gilded Age politics.

                        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars How the Republicans lost in 1884.......2005-07-21

This is an extremely insightful examination of the election that first put Grover Cleveland in the White House. The ways in which Summers analyzes the political process remind me of Holt's masterpiece, "The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party". (That is a much more massive book, as it covers a broader topic over a longer period). The use of political cartoons of the period to support the narrative is probably the best I've seen. The style is engaging, although occasionally I think Summers gets slightly carried away. For example, at least one discussion of the standard myths about the period goes on long enough to be somewhat disruptive. Also, while I don't detect any factual bias, there is a tendency to look at things more a Republican perspective. That is, issues (e.g., the role of the minor parties) are more often discussed in terms of problems facing the GOP and how well they did or did not deal with them. The outcome of the election is reported in language that seems rather wistful that Blaine lost. Again, this is only a matter of relative emphasis - there is excellent material on the complex relations between the Democrats at the national and state levels and the rival Democratic machines in New York City. Despite my minor quibbles, I highly recommend this book to anyone with a general interest in American political history, and it certainly must be read by anyone with a particular interest in this period.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-12-21

Anyone interested in politics or American history should love this book. The writing style is crisp and entertaining and the author strikes the right balance between explaining long ago and long forgotten events without drowning the reader in unnecesary details. The 1884 election itself was one of the most interesting of our history with sex scandals, charges of political corruption, party splits, and campaign blunders. The author brings the excitement to life and lets the reader understand not only what happened but why it occured and, even more interesting, what the participants had hoped to accomplish with their political strategies. The book succeeds in describing how late 19th century elections looked and felt to the participants. The human dynamic skillfully set out in this book (the cynical maneuverings, the overheated rhetoric, and the intense partisanship)are very familiar with what we experience in campaigns today-this very familiarity helps make Blaine and Cleveland seem real and not just sterile historical figures. Read this book!

5 out of 5 stars LONG OVERDUE DEPICTION OF A FORGOTTEN PERIOD IN U.S. HISTORY.......2000-11-02

The last half of the 19th century is a period that the historians generally give short shrift to. They dutifully plow through it in the obligatory chapter in their rush to get from the Civil War to Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, and the Progressive Era. The campaign of Grover Cleveland against James Blaine for the presidency in 1884 is just about forgotten. This is too bad because what with the emphasis on character and values (accompanied by some really gross mudslinging), the extensive changes in technology and business, the factionalism and divided government, it was a period much like ours. Summers does an excellent job of dispelling the prevailing view of this period as a doldrum bookended by Lincoln and TR. In a comprehensive yet not overly long book, he shows that substantive issues like the tariff, the relationship of the national government to the states, morality in politics, substance abuse (ie prohibition), and other pressing matters really were at stake, he explores those issues and the men and women who had to face them. This book is one of the best treatments of the 1884 presidential campaign (or any other campaign for that matter) out there. Find a copy of this book and read about a time that is so much like ours.

5 out of 5 stars Mark Summers Makes History Come Alive Again!!!.......2000-09-07

As an undergraduate at the University of Kentucky some years ago, Professor Mark Summers changed my life and I eventually devoted my life to the study of history. His lectures made the past come alive and seem so fresh and real and vital. Anyone who has read any of his books can relate to the sense of excitement that I am describing, and his latest book is no exception. In fact, it is perhaps his best book yet. Lively, fast-paced, yet scholarly and thought-provoking, Summers' book is everything that his readers have come to expect. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in nineteenth-century politics or U.S. history in general, or for those who consider history dry and boring and would like read a book where the past truly does come to life.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Historian Brings An Era to Life.......2000-04-29

Mark Summers is one of the great historians of mid-nineteenth century America. He is fully capable of taking subjects which have seemingly been worked to death and making them fresh with new material and original analysis. Rum Romanism and Rebellion does just that, making Blaine and Cleveland seem more vital and alive than the current occupants of the White House. The issues engage us, the political battle grips us. This is one of the author's best (to my mind, Mr. Summers best work is his two volume work on political corruption [neatly divided between ante-bellum crooks and post-war thieves]; let's hope that Mr. Summers has a trilogy in mind and next turns his attention to wartime corruption: from the transcontinental railroad to the supply of Union soldiers and the appointment of generals, that era was rife with corruption, yet very little has ever been written about it). Well done, Mr. Summers!

Robertson's earlier work, The New Renaissance projected the likely future impact of computers in changing our culture. Phase Change builds on and deepens his assessment of the role of the computer as a tool driving profound change by examining the role of computers in changing the face of the sciences and mathematics. He shows that paradigm shifts in understanding in science have generally been triggered by the availability of new tools, allowing the investigator a new way of seeing into questions that had not earlier been amenable to scientific probing.

Robertson presents an important new perspective on the history of science in this book. We all know that computers have vastly increased our ability to study the universe around us, as well as the universe of mathematics, but Robertson puts this revolution into a wider context, as part of an ongoing process that occurs whenever our ability to observe the universe increases significantly. The invention of the telescope, for example, brought about a large quantitative change in our ability to see. However, the result in astronomy is more than just quantitative, more than just the ability to see more things in the sky, but a fundamental change in the insights that are available to us in that field.

Robertson's great insight in this book is that the telescope is only one example of this phenomenon in the history of science.

further argues that "phase changes" cause paradigm
shifts. Examples of inventions that have caused phase
changes are the telescope in astronomy, the microscope
in biology, and the computer in every field. His
arguments are very good, and although I was skeptical,
                                          I was convinced.

Even if you are not convinced by his
arguments, the book is enormously interesting for the
history and overview it gives of mathematics,
astronomy, physics, biology, and other sciences. I
was very impressed that one person could grasp the
essential features of so many different fields. In
addition, he expresses the ideas and history so well
that I found it enormously interesting, even in the
fields I am already familiar with.

Chapter 8 is more controversial, and although
I did not agree with everything he says, I was
fascinated to read his views. I found my mind being
                                          stretched in enjoyable ways.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has
even the slightest interest in science, and also to
anyone who is interested in learning more about the
                                          computer revolution.
