Aggression Replacement Training: A Comprehensive Intervention for Aggressive Youth
ASIN: 0898622468 |
Book Description
Reflecting and often paralleling aggression in the population at large, school violence and vandalism in the United States are escalating at an alarming rate. The response of the education establishment to this dangerous and costly trend has been to create energetic, constructive, and, in some cases, demonstrably successful programs. Designed specifically for school personnel, this volume comprehensively presents, in user-friendly detail, the primary techniques currently being employed to prevent and manage student aggression, as well as constructive alternatives to replace it.
Paying special attention to issues that precipitate student violence, the book describes attitudes and situations that often contribute to episodes of aggressive behavior and outlines methods for management and prevention. Chapters discuss student-oriented interventions, such as psychological skills training, behavior modification, psychodynamic and humanistic interventions, and gang-oriented interventions. Recognizing school violence as a systems problem, the authors address ways to modify each of the elements that contribute to school violence. They offer detailed guidelines for changing the behavior of peers, school personnel, and family members, as well as ways to modify academic curricula and alter a school's physical features. In addition, they describe how to integrate administrative systems, security personnel, family members, community programs, and state and federal agencies into response and prevention networks.
Extremely timely and relevant, this book is a valuable resource for school psychologists and social workers, counselors, teachers, administrators, security personnel, parents, and anyone else confronting school-related violence. It is useful in graduate-level courses focusing on the psychology of violence and aggressive behavior and the development and implementation of school and community safety programs.

aggression replacement training.......2000-03-30
This book is so helpful, i'm a studet studying psychology, and I'm doing a paper on aggression in our school system. I found this book to be helpful in empowering youth to modify their own anger. This book is a good tool for parents of teenagers, teachers, youth pastors, anyone that has contact with young adults. When we as adults adopt the skills of training our youth to be responsible for their own actions we ALL WIN! Wonderful Book!

Book Description
Hayes is a founder of the Operations Strategy field, and all four authors are on the Harvard Business School faculty. In Operations, Strategy, and Technology: Pursuing the Competitive Edge--the long-awaited follow-up to the highly successful classic, Restoring Our Competitive Edge--Bob Hayes, Gary Pisano, Dave Upton, and Steve Wheelwright take a fresh look at the foundations of corporate success. This book addresses the basic principles that guide the development of a powerful operations organization, and describes how a company's operating and technological resources can be applied to create a sustainable competitive advantage in today's "new" (global and IT-intensive) economy. Achieving a competitive advantage through superior operations is what the authors refer to as the "operations edge."

Has served well as a reference .......2006-07-20
I am using this as I strive to be a first-time author. I'm writing on service strategies, my target audience is primarily in the IT services industry. Providing guidance for those responsible for the operation of IT services infrastructure is a key requirement for the book I'm writing. This book helped me achive clarity in my own mind. The concepts are solid and rest on sound principles that I have known from elsewhere.

Book Description
This series of test preparation guides for pilots covers the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) exams for applicants seeking licensing by the FAA. The FAA publishes a question database on the Internet to help applicants prepare for the exams, but they do not supply the correct answers. This series is fashioned to aid the applicant in studying for an exam by providing answers and explanations for every question in the FAA exam database. Designed to encourage self-testing and promote memory recall, these books arrange topics by subject category and are accompanied by specific study material for each category.
Customer Reviews:
Must Have!.......2007-04-29
I have read and studied many aviation books and this is by far the best guide for preparing for the ATP and dispatcher tests. I didn't miss one question on my FAA test and I credit my high score to this book. I am not a book person and lose interest very quickly.
This guide is not only a study guide but it explains each answer to the question so you can understand in detail. I'd rather read this prep guide then reading a text book trying to explain the information. Of course you need to get the current book for the year in which you take the test because of continuous aviation rule changes. A must have for test prep and also a great guide to understanding everything a pilot and dispatcher should know.

Book Description
There is a strong awareness that the new economy has arrived, and that firms and management need to focus on a plethora of new issues at present only dimly perceived. The astute management of technology can advance not only the fortunes of the innovators, but also of society at large. In this book, David Teece considers how firms can exploit technological innovation, protecting their intellectual capital, while staying ahead of the competition. He provides frameworks as well as practical advice, looking in particular at the organization structure most likely to support innovation, and how managerial decision and strategy affect the division of the gains. This will be essential reading for academics, managers, and students alike who want to keep abreast of contemporary strategic challenges.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2001-09-20
In his preface, author David J. Teece promises a theoretical framework for understanding intellectual property and practical advice about managing it. Theory ultimately prevails in this book, but valuable nuggets of managerial guidance await any entrepreneur willing to dig for them. As a professor and as the presenter of Oxford's Clarendon Lecture in Management Studies, from which this book is drawn, Teece naturally tends toward abstract thinking. Some of the territory has been traveled before (i.e. the message that bureaucratic, hierarchical organizations tend to stifle innovation) but Teece adds a lot of intriguing material. We [...] believe analytically minded academics, entrepreneurs and executives will find Teece's volume illuminating, most notably his educated perspective on antitrust activism in the high tech arena. He concludes that government regulators should probably stick to regulating industries they understand. Well, if they want to understand intellectual property, they should start here.
Managing Intellectual Capital. What, how and by whom?.......2001-08-28
You are about to realize a misconception between two related but different terms: intellectual capital and intellectual property. Browsing throughout the book you will hardly find any references to intellectual capital, including a brief definition! Thus you should not be surprised by not finding any reference to intellectual capital in the Index. One would expect some heated discussion over this controversial concept before being offered a framework to manage it. Forget it. Despite author's attempt to write about the promising field of IC all sections seem to converge around the intellectual property discussion. The management of intellectual capital is something else than the management of intellectual capital. The wrong audiences may than be easily caught in this trap.
Provocative theoretical perspectives, some well-worn.......2001-05-26
This is an excellent book on the knowledge-based view of the firm. Although Teece is unsure in his preface whoether is succesfully addresses both academic audiences and managers. From an academic perspective, I can surely claim that this book is theoretically interesting. I recognized two portions of this book that draw heavily on Teece's work published previously in California Management Review (parts of Chapter 1 and all of chapter 4). What is certainly most interesting out of the 300 pages of small type is Section 2. This section provides a compelling set of arguments on the impact of market structures and governance modes on intellectual capital. Notabily missing, however, is incorporation of the knowledge-integration perspective that Grant et. al have been building for the past half decade. The case study on Pilkinton Glass is also well worn, and Teece clearly acknowledges that. Information technologists should not hold thier breath because this work seems to take a rather passive stand on the role of IT in mobilizing intellectual assets. The references at the end provide an impressive array of literature in economics that Teece draws on. The readibility and plausibility of Teece's arguments should come as no surprise to anyone who has read Teece's earlier scholarly work. Overall, I'd say that this was worth the thirty five dollars.

Book Description
This volume is a sequel to Information Management: The Strategic Dimension (OUP 1988), a book which was well received by managers and academics alike. In the last decade, the pervasiveness of information technology (IT) has brought about far-reaching changes in how many managers and specialists work and, indeed, in how we conceptualize the organization. The correspondence between new organizational terminology and the language of IT demonstrates this -- networked, virtual and knowledge-based organizations, inter-organizational alliances, distributed organizations and groupware all being examples. For some, IT represents a solution to many organizational and operational problems (including the advocates of Business Process Re-engineering) and the most likely way to improve business performance and gain competitive advantage. At the same time, for many managers and organizations the reality is that the risks, costs, false trails and difficulties seem to outweigh any immediate tangible advantage. The purpose of this book is to take an informed, dispassionate and constructive look at the challenges of IT and to offer insight, analysis and guidance on the ever changing IT environment, focusing in particular on managerial and organizational issues. These include centralization versus decentralization, relations between users and specialists, managing the IS function, outsourcing versus internal capabilities, project management and systems implementation, and an assessment of Business Process Re-engineering at both the conceptual and empirical level. Section 1 looks at some of the organizational horizons made possible by information technology; the next section tackles some of the challenges that face organizations who want to exploit IT in innovative and strategic ways. Section 3 examines some of the eternal questions of how to organize the IS function. In Section Four the contributors look at various aspects of project management and systems implementation. The next section examines some contemporary management questions on the agendas of Chief Information officers and their IS departments. Michael Earl's postscript integrates the volume through the framework of 'organizational fit'. The book provides an authoritative overview and helpful diagnostics of current information management challenges by some of the leading information systems researchers in Europe and the USA. The volume will be essential reading for management students, consultants, and senior IT professionals. Description:
This paper analyzes the failure of an initiative of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Public Safety. It argues that an inability to understand power relationships during systems analysis, design, and implementation has serious implication on the well being of an organization and its business processes; thus, it is a key factor in IS's project failure. The argument is conducted by evaluating various dimensions of power. Lessons are drawn that return to the importance of considering organizational power issues in implementing a successful computer-based system and in realizing an information technology enabled strategic change initiative.

Description:
In this paper, we discuss our investigation of IS outsourcing management competences, their relationships and measurement. First, three theoretical perspectives were applied to explain the nature of the IS outsourcing phenomenon. Second, IS outsourcing management competence dimensions and their measures were generated, based on the literature. Third, data was then gathered to refine measures empirically and test proposed competences and their relationships. The theoretical development and empirical testing filled the gap in IS outsourcing management competence research resulting in important implications for IS outsourcing practitioners.
