Book Description
Leaky faucets and cracked pavement aren't the only demands on a facility manager's time and energy. These days, they also need top-notch financial skills--to sell their department to senior management, to win funds for crucial projects, to become fully integrated into the organization.
Sadly, most facility managers lack even fundamental financial skills. The Facility Manager's Guide to Finance and Budgeting is the first primer designed to teach them the ropes quickly, concisely, and with minimum pain. The book explains how to:
* Understand the essential concepts of facility work programs and programmatic planning and budgeting * Develop and manage an annual expense budget, then evaluate the results * Make financially sound "go/no go" decisions on projects requiring capital funding * Pinpoint significant cost-savings and cost-containment areas * Use unit-cost indicators to benchmark facility management initiatives * Create an information system and database that ties directly into the budget.

Book Description
The relevance of Lacanian categories for social theory and cultural studies is now established, but while many legal scholars -- law school professors, philosophers of law, sociologists of law, and criminologists -- are familiar with Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory, his work is not yet part of the canon in the theory of legal processes and institutions. Perhaps his focus on individual analysis might appear to limit his relevance for social and legal theory, but Caudill argues that his emphasis on language and identity establishes the contours of a radical socio-legal psychoanalysis. Further, he maintains that Lacan's account of the human subject bridges the antinomies of traditional and critical theory, mainstream and left analyses of culture, and modern and postmodern paradigms, and that, in fact, Lacan's orientation is decidedly social.
Caudill's primary intention in this book is to explore the promise of Lacanian theory as a critical supplement to the theory of law. In this pursuit, he introduces several Lacanian concepts that are significant for any attempt to employ Lacan's methodology in contemporary legal theory and practice, particularly in legal education and contract law. Applications of Lacan's theory to concrete legal problems then follow, in a series of studies of contemporary legal controversies, including child abuse hysteria, land use debates, the critique of legal ideology, and religion in law and politics.

Book Description
This book presents an exhaustive overview of the biogeochemical cycling of mercury in hydroelectric reservoirs as well as in natural aquatic systems of the boreal forest region of northern Québec (Canada). Presented in the form of 14 papers with an overall synthesis, it marks the conclusion of over 10 years of studies carried out by universities, governmental institutions and industries, using the latest and most appropriate sampling and analytical procedures. The results clearly show a threefold increase in atmospheric fluxes of Hg in remote areas of northern Québec over the last century and, in the case of hydroelectric reservoirs, the critical role played by the extensive flooding of land in the temporary post-impoundment increase in mercury levels in aquatic organisms and fish-eating wildlife.

A long-standing member of Cambridge's Wine and Food Society, Hugh Johnson edited Wine & Food magazine and has written an impressive array of oenological masterpieces, such as The World Atlas of Wine. What makes Johnson special is his ability to translate his knowledge into language the average wine-sipping Joe can appreciate and understand.
The Pocket Encyclopedia takes all Johnson's erudition, selects the most useful and necessary tidbits, and puts it all in a convenient, portable size. Take California. Focusing on one of four featured North American regions (the others being the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest, Texas, etc., and East of the Rockies & Ontario), the California chapter starts off with a brief but savvy wine history of the region and the market, then launches into thumbnail sketches of the principal vineyard areas and a summary of the qualities and characters of recent crops (1985 to 1996 for Chardonnay, 1974 to 1996 for Cabernet Sauvignons), providing an easy and precious reference on the value of various vintages. Then come the wineries--alphabetically listed, rated with a star system, pithily revealing for each their varietals, vintages, flavor characteristics, and any other notable details, such as new owner or direction.
Johnson supplies the same attention to the wines of the world, with chapters dedicated to Sherry, Port, and Madeira, and the Châteaux of Bordeaux.
Johnson provides the skinny on all the major wines you could expect to find in quality wine stores and restaurants, plus a hundred or so more obscure wineries that ship only to private orders. It's all most people need to know. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
Revised and updated for the new millennium, Hugh Johnson's Pocket Encyclopedia of Wine 2000 is the essential reference for every wine enthusiast. This 23d edition gives expert help in choosing a wine for every occasion and every budget.
With current information on more than 6,000 wines, growers, and regions worldwide, the Pocket Encyclopedia is packed with advice to assist you in wine selection, whether in stores or restaurants, for cellaring, or for special events. Extensive coverage -- from reemerging European growing regions to the newest additions in the United States -- will introduce even the experienced oenophile to little-known finds, while detailed entries clarify information for the novice.
Johnson names the top-valued wines from every country and highlights those to drink in 2000, with predictions for wines to watch for in the future. Also included are regional maps, label guides, and vintage charts, along with fascinating entries on the history, production, and appreciation of wine. Hugh Johnson's Pocket Encyclopedia of Wine 2000 is the peerless standard of wine guides, a crucial addition to the library of every wine lover, devotee, and connoisseur.
Customer Reviews:
My opinion.......2001-08-21
Handy little book for those occasions when you are at the wine store or restaurant and not sure which one to choose. I like it a lot.
All you need to know about judging a wine before you buy........2001-05-21
Hugh Johnson's book is the most objective, accurate, complete and concise evaluation of wine, by both winery and vintage year, that is currently available to wine lovers anywhere. This book is a must have. If a wine is not listed here, then it is probably not worth knowing about. The book comments on the quality and value of every important wine still available to consumers. The most amazing feature of this little book is that all this valuable information can be carried in one's pocket. I find that I refer to it more often than all my many other wine guides put together. It is easy to read, well organized and I have found all of its recommendations to be very objective. If it says that a wine will be good, it always is. If it states a particular wine represents a good value then it always does. If you are a wine novice and need someone to point you in the right direction no matter what your individual preferences may be, then Hugh Johnson is the man to read.
Powerhouse book.......2000-12-29
This is my secret weapon. It's saved my skin many times when I've been asked to recommend a wine for that special occasion. It's also a great help when perusing wines in the grocery store, or, if you're slick enough, to secretly review your favorite restaurant's wine list. Any way you cut it, it's the best pocket reference I've seen. No, it doesn't cover every wine in the world, and no book can (boutique wines pop up too fast) but it'll get you through 95% of your wine hunt. I've been buying them for 12+ years. Very, very good stuff.
Great for French but weak for New World.......2000-12-05
A handy, entertaining read with excellent coverage of French wines and good coverage of the rest of traditional Europe (mostly German, Italian and Spanish). Unfortunately, New World coverage paled in comparison (60pgs for USA, Australia, NZ, South America AND South Africa compared to 180pgs for Europe!). This was a serious deficit as it is precisely in the exciting and confusing new world of wine that amateurs like myself need the sharp eye (palette, rather?) of experienced tasters.
Still, a great read -- balanced viewpoint (i.e. not egocentric), succinct writing, well-organised, easy to use, and full of enthusiasm for the subject. Has a healthy respect for humbler wines that is lacking in other publications; a timely reminder that wine is to be enjoyed in all dimensions and not just an excuse to be poncey. Definitely worth buying.
excellent and reliable advice.......2000-11-13
When you follow the excellent advice in this wine guide, you quickly realize why this pocket book sells over 400,000 times a year - it is just indispensable for choosing the right wine of the right vintage for the right occasion. Although the book carries only the name of famous British wine expert Hugh Johnson on the cover, recommendations also come from a total of 59 other wine experts, such as, e.g., Christie's Michael Broadbend or Michael Prinz zu Salm-Salm. This makes this book so reliable in its advice for enjoyable good wine. And it is always a nice little gift for people who appreciate an excellent bottle of wine as well.

Book Description
Margaret Cavendish was one of the most prolific, complex and misunderstood writers of the seventeenth century. A contemporary of Descartes and Hobbes, she was fascinated by philosophical, scientific and imaginative advances, and struggled to overcome the political and cultural obstacles which threatened to stop her engagement with such discourses. Rees examines how Cavendish engaged with the work of thinkers such as Lucretius, Plato, Homer and Harvey in an attempt to write her way out of the exile which threatened not only her intellectual pursuits but her very existence. What emerges is the image of an intelligent, audacious and intrepid early modern woman whose tale will appeal to specialists and general readers alike.

The Concise Dictionary of World Place-Names (Oxford Paperback Reference)
ASIN: 1568362986 |
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but Jumbled.......2004-06-02
Interesting facts throughout, however, the book jumps all over the map (so to speak) and back and forth through history. It was difficult to follow the train of thought sometimes. He also puts forth an idea of pictures instead of place names about half way through the book, then proceeds to talk about it sparingly in the chapter. Interesting facts, but not well organized.
Fun but disappointing.......2001-10-19
I wondered when I read this book just how accurate it was. It is a huge area of information to cover and the author while writing well does seem to have made some annoying errors. The other reviews cover many of them it seems (a lot I didn't know in fact) The one I picked up is that, when naming the Apollo 13 captain, Nelson called him James Loving (his name is, in fact, James Lovell). Its kind of really basic mistakes like that which bother me. It shouldn't be that hard to get an editor who can pick up on the slip-ups an author makes.
Although Nelson has divided his book up into 11 chapters they do tend to overlap a lot in subject area and matter. It is a fun easy read, one of those books with lots of little snippets of information which makes it easy to pick up at virtually any stage. However in the end I think a book needs to be both fun and accurate.
Not Perfect, Not Definitive, But Fun.......2000-11-11
Derek Nelson's book Off the Map is the historical equivalent of a bathroom book. This is not said to be derogatory. In many ways, that is the charm of the book. It is light, easy to read, and filled with many, many facts. There are too many facts coming at the reader to remember them all or to learn them. Instead, the reader will come away with the general knowledge of how important place-names are to a culture and how other cultures will view a place and give it a name of their own. Naming a place to some extent is a control issue and the struggle for control is an ever-changing idea. But even these ideas are too heavy to be sustained in this light book. This book is meant to read quickly and enjoyed throughout. It is cotton candy, sweet to taste but light on substance with a carnival happening just on the outskirts of the reader's eye.
A manual of inaccuracies.......2000-07-30
This seems to be a hastily written book, which may be described as a real "manual of inaccuracies". To cite only a few (I spotted dozens of them): "the Basque Provinces of Asturias, Galicia, Catalonia and Valencia" (no comments! ); "Chili does mean hot pepper in Spanish" (chilli is a nahua word, spelled in Spanish "chile"); "The Quichua language was spoken by Indians in western Guatemala..." (actually, the Quiché language, while Quechua - and not Quichua - is the language spoken in the Andean region); "New York appears as Nueva York on a Brazilian world map" (this is the Spanish name for NY, not the Portuguese Nova York). This book is not more than a shameless attempt to make money.
The first line is well said, but it's downhill from there........2000-01-15
After reading only the first 35 pages, I had come across literally dozens of inaccuracies in Mr. Nelson's book. Easily over half the facts lack context, are misinterpreted, or just plain wrong. Examples: 1) Saying that Gaza is "now held by Egypt" [It's now under control of the Palestinian authority and ultimately still under Israeli control.] 2) "Before World War II, Silesia and Pomerania were located southwest of Poland, between Germany and Czechoslovakia" [Pomerania was NORTHwest of Poland, and Poland directly bordered Germany - no Czechoslovakia in between] With the amazing number of errors in this book, I would recommend it for only one reason: It would make an excellent history/geography project to have students go through and correct all the errors.

Book Description
Early explorers conceived of the earth as a flat disk encircled by a narrow river dotted with islands A mythological, geographical, and historical study of the real and imagined islands in what we now know as the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
Book Description
Today we are on the verge of discoveries that should soon reveal the deepest secrets of the universe. In Alpha & Omega, Charles Seife takes us to the front lines of the cosmological revolution to synthesize the discoveries of scientists at observatories and laboratories around the world who are actually peering into both the cradle of the universe and its grave. The cast of characters includes galaxy hunters and microwave eavesdroppers, gravity theorists and atom smashers, all of whom are on the trail of dark matter, dark energy, and the growing inhabitants of the particle zoo. SeifeÂ's lucid explanations of scientific theories and current research make cutting-edge science both crystal clear and wonderfully exciting.
Customer Reviews:
wow!.......2007-10-06
Amazing! Truth can be stranger than fiction. Vacuums filled with activity. The beginning and end of the universe. Spacetime a rubber sheet. And all described specifically and clearly.
satisfactory overview.......2007-01-09
This book provides a satisfactory overview of the history and current state of cosmology. Unfortunately, the book describes Copernicus as wasting many years trying to explain the radiuses of the planetary orbits in terms of the five Platonic solids, when in fact it was Kepler who was obsessed with this idea. The majority of popular books devoting space to the history of astronomy mention this, with most also including a picture of Kepler's model, thus it is certainly not an obscure fact. This error made me wonder whether the book was reviewed by anyone knowledgeable prior to publication. I was disappointed to see such a major error in the book as it made me wonder what other errors might be lurking in the text. It definitely showed that the author was not as familiar with the material as he should have been.
This book is a good intro to cosmology and explains every discovery so far..........2005-12-15
I like Seife's writing style. He wrote this book keeping in mind that 'regular' people will be reading it. He starts with the very first theorys on the universe and explains them in a way that slides right into to your mind like butter. The theorys are written chronologically and gradually get more complex as new things are discovered. He also describes these new discoveries chronologically and detailed to where the average person has a broader more precise understanding of the whys and hows and whats of each theory. This book has confirmed what I always thought was a huge part in the creation of the universe: symmetry; particularly TCP symmetry (I wish there was more info on that in the book)...The previous reviewer mentioned that this book suffers by "trying to explain mathematical ideas without using mathematics"... that is a bunch of bull b/c there is a great glossary that explains every mathematical term/symbol....speaking of math; I'll leave you with a though: in this book we find out that the universe is in fact finite(albeit ever-expanding) but how can you truly decifer the language of a finite universe with an infinite language of illusions and possibilities(MATH!)that allows anything to go?... If we could then over 95% of the universe still wouldn't be invisibe dark matter now would it!
Very convincing.......2004-07-25
I am a skeptic. I have a mind of my own, and I like authors who treat the reader with respect. If I wanted religion, I would go to church. I want to be convinced.
In particular, I am very skeptical of the whole big bang idea. I've been exposed to some of the evidence, but it has always seemed relatively scant to me.
No longer. Seife has convinced me. The big bang, basically, probably, did in fact occur.
His deep respect for skeptical scientists, my heroes, runs through the whole book. Seife acknoledges that much of the old evidence was really not overwhelming. When he refers to very recent experiments which disprove moribund but reasonable ideas (some of which have occurred even to laymen like me) he does not criticize the scientists who had held out hope. Actually, he seems to admire the tenacity of the iconoclast.
The icing on the cake is the list of ongoing and future experiments. This section may soon be outdated, but for now it has the effect of including the reader in the scientific pursuit. I am now very excited to learn the results of some of these experiments, though they may be years away.
If you just want to admire the insights, go with Hawking. If you want to dream, try Brian Greene. If you want to be dragged kicking and screaming into the new cosmological era, read this book.
Why only 4 stars? The book becomes less convincing in the final chapters. But it is the best I've found.
Good introduction for non-science types.......2004-07-15
A fine and clear review of the development of cosmological theory from Ptolemy to the present, definitely written for the curious non-scientist.
Seife has a good feeling for how strange the universe is, and for how unsettling it can be to contemplate it. He takes your hand and leads you through the stories of discovery with respect, but assuming you know little to nothing about the subject.
I had trouble putting it down.
