Book Description
Hiring financial help is a task that many otherwise savvy people approach the wrong way, opting to go on recommendations from family and friends, chance encounters, or advertisements rather than on sound research. In engaging, accessible prose, nationally syndicated columnist Charles A. Jaffe takes the reader through the basics of how to locate appropriate candidates, understand their credentials, check references, conduct initial interviews, maintain control of the relationships and one's finances, and fire an adviser who is not working out.
The book contains guidance on hiring and checking the backgrounds of seven types of advisers--brokers, financial planners, insurance agents, lawyers, tax preparers, bankers, and real estate agents--as well as specific questions to ask to determine whether an adviser is a good, qualified match. In addition the book offers guidance on how to help the advisers function as a team. The author's aim is to help the reader assemble and manage a pool of advisers to serve every major financial need for the rest of his or her lifetime. This new edition has been updated throughout. It includes , hundreds of Web addresses and an online resources directory. Two new chapters discuss online advice services and how to choose an online broker.
Customer Reviews:
Needs better focus.......2003-06-24
A previous reviewer who accused the book of having too much fluff is, unfortunately, only slightly exaggerating. If the author had taken the time to tighten up the book and used only half as many words as he did, the resulting book would have been first rate useful. As it is, the book is a serious test of one's patience and concentration. The ideas are very reasonable, but the reader has to struggle to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Forces you to practice due diligence.......2001-04-27
Some people might think that Jaffe's book is obvious. But what's obvious to some may be revolutionary and important to others.
The book outlines questions that should be asked of any financial proessionals one is considering hiring, and suggests interviewing at least three of each type of adviser to learn differences and to become comfortable.
Jaffe's advice is so good that it is almost impossible not to gain many times the cost of the book in better financial planning and better peace of mind that one has proceeded with due diligence.
From a Jaffe fan: This book is what we have come to expect.......2000-08-27
I read Mr. Jaffe's column every week in the Boston Globe and bought this book after hearing him talk on this subject atthe Globe's personal finance conference (he autographed the book for me).
This book gave me exactly what I have come to expect from Mr. Jaffe: Clear, insightful, unafraid commentary that helped give me the courage to go through with choosing a financial planner. I learned which questions to ask, and I took the book with me and asked those questions. And while it's early to tell (Mr. Jaffe says all the time that anything less than one year is not really long enough to judge), I am happy with my financial planner and expect to stay that way for a long time.
As for the reviewer who thought this book was redundant, he must have skipped the introduction. That's where Mr. Jaffe explains why parts of the book are redundant and advises more knowledgeable investors to skip the parts that they don't need.
If you do that, this book will give you exactly what you need. It certainly did for me.
Lots of fluff.......1999-12-30
As with many books these days, the author seems to have been desparately trying for the maximum number of pages as his primary goal. Large margins, explaining the obvious, repetition, unnecessary quotes, all add up to a book that's only about 25% actual content. If this book was 75% shorter, I'd give it two, maybe three stars. But most of the useful info in this book could be found on the web. A shorter book might have been worthwhile to avoid having to search for it on the web, but having to wade through all the fluff negates this potential benefit.
A lifesaver.......1999-03-03
I had worked with financial planners befor but I was never comfortible. Then I read about this book in the local paper. I bought it. I used it. I just hired a planner, and this time I am comfortible. This book is the reason. I recomend it!

Book Description
The riddle of inertia is solved by Origin of Inertia!
In the author's model, absolute motion is defined by relational motion parameters with respect to an infinite, quasistatic universe. Old problems associated with Newton's laws of motion and universal gravitation are resolved, and evidence is shown for a cosmic drag depending on velocity with respect to the mean rest frame of the universe. The book provides coherent solutions to long-standing mysteries of celestial mechanics and cosmology.
Customer Reviews:
A milestone in cosmology.......2007-03-27
An excellent book and a fascinating thesis. Prof. Ghosh analyzes the difficulties of Newtonian mechanics and proposes a new model based on Inertial Induction. The proposed solution is fully compliant with Mach's Principle (unlike Einstein's Relativity). It shows the far-reaching implications of velocity and acceleration dependent terms in the laws of motion, which could be a solution to the riddles of the expanding universe, the cosmic redshift, and the flat rotation curve of galaxies among others.
The thorough explanations are very plausible and real food for thought for cosmologists and physicists. Although his thesis is completely out of the current orthodoxy, it should be studied by everyone interested in these subjects, who is trying to get a thorough understanding of the Cosmos.
I strongly recommend this book.
Inertia explained.......2007-02-14
In Origin of Inertia, Amitabha Ghosh provides a very possible explanation of Inertia. The book is extremely interesting to anyone who wants to understand the basic working of our universe. It makes bold suggestions and takes a new viewpoint on the universe, which is very different from orthodox thinking. For those of us who have wandered about the origin of inertia and suspected that it is in some way related to the gravitational effect of the distant universe, this book provides clarity and explanation.
Instead of trying to invent new forces or exotic matter, the author simply assumes that velocity and acceleration of a mass, relative to masses in the rest of the universe, results in forces acting on that mass. When this very reasonable assumption has been made, the remaining part of the book rests on solid logic and mathematical proof.
The book offers a thorough treatment of some of the effects, which is to be expected if the force of gravity has a velocity dependent, and an acceleration dependent term. It explains several observations that are not explained in a satisfactory way by mainstream cosmology. This book will certainly broaden your mind.
Review of Origin of Inertia.......2003-10-01
The book "Origin of Inertia" is a great piece of work. The subtitle indicates the main topics of the book,
namely, "Extended Mach's Principle and Cosmological Consequences". The book was published by Apeiron,
a publisher in Montreal, Canada: http://redshift.vif.com (ISBN: 0-9683689-3-X)
Amitabha Ghosh has published many research papers related with the topics of this book in important
conferences and scientific journals including Astrophysics and Space Science; Pramana Journal of Physics;
Earth, Moon and Planets etc. In 2002 he organized an International Workshop on Mach's Principle and the
Origin of Inertia which happened in Kharagpur, India. The Proceeding of this workshop were published by
Apeiron in 2003 (edited by M. Sachs and A. R. Roy, ISBN: 0-9732911-0-9).
The main topic of the book is to discuss the inertia of bodies. According to Newton's first law of motion,
when there is no net force on a body it remains at rest or moving in straight line at a constant velocity.
If there is a force on the body it will be accelerated along the direction of the force, with the
acceleration being proportional to the force and inversely proportional to the inertial mass of the body,
according to Newton's second law of motion. There are two main puzzles with Newton's laws.
The first is that the inertial masses of bodies is proportional to their gravitational masses.
This suggests that the inertia of any body is due to a gravitational interaction.
But there is nothing in Newton's laws of motion nor in his universal law of gravitation which connects
these two aspects (inertia and gravitation). The second puzzle is that the best inertial frames
(frames of reference where Newton's laws are valid) are those which are not accelerated relative to the frame
defined by the distant galaxies in the cosmos. This suggests that the distant matter in the cosmos,
or some other matter which is at rest relative to the frame of distant galaxies, defines/creates/specifies the
inertial frames. Once more there is nothing in Newton's laws which links these two aspects
(inertial frames and distant matter). The idea that the distant matter in the cosmos specifies the inertial
frames due to a gravitational interaction became known as Mach's principle, a subject mentioned in the
subtitle of this book, as these ideas were presented by the austrian experimental physicist and philosopher
Ernst Mach in his influential book The Science of Mechanics, first published in 1883. Mach didn't
implement his ideas mathematically. This is the goal of Amitabha Ghosh in this book.
Origin of Inertia has 9 chapters: Introduction, Difficulties with Newton's Laws of Motion,
Mach's Principle and Inertial Induction, Extension of Mach's Principle, Universal Interaction and Cosmic
Drag, Cosmic Drag: Cosmological Implications, Local Interaction of Photons with Matter, Interaction of
Matter with Matter, Extra-galactic Phenomena. They are followed by an Epilogue and a rich list of References.
The Forword was written by David Roscoe, Applied Mathematics Department, Sheffield University, UK.
In order to implement Mach's principle the author defines the mean rest frame of the universe connected with all
the matter in the cosmos. The main idea of the book is to present a modified law of gravitation. It includes
Newton's inverse square law and has two extra terms. One of the extra terms is proportional to the
acceleration of the test body relative to an infinite and quasistatic universe and falls inversely with the
distance to the source body. When integrated for the test body interacting with the whole universe this term
leads to an analogous to Newton's second law of motion. But now the mass which appears is a gravitational mass.
This explains at once the remarkable proportionality between inertial and gravitational masses, which had puzzled
Newton, Mach, Einstein and many others.
The second extra term is proportional to the square of the velocity of the test body. This is a dragging force of
cosmic origin. Amitabha Ghosh calculates the magnitude of this cosmic drag and obtains many implications.
In particular he applies his model for photons interacting with matter and derives a cosmological redshift which
gives an explanation for Hubble's law without big bang and without the associated expansion of the universe.
He also explains many other puzzling redshifts observed in astronomy, the bending of light etc. When he considers
the interaction of matter with matter the cosmic drag explains the transfer of solar angular momentum, the
distribution of matter in spiral galaxies and other puzzling phenomena. All of this is obtained without the supposion
of dark matter.
In summary this is a fascinating book which should be read by all scientists interested in fundamental questions of
physics and cosmology.

Customer Reviews:
very enjoyable read!.......2005-04-22
This is an excellent book! I purchased this book at the Alamo and was fortunate to have the author sign it. I have read several books about the Texas Revolution, and this one stands out because of its format. It is writen like a novel and like a great novel, it is very easy to get engrossed in it. The book follows the revolution from the Alamo through San Jacinto. Both the Texan and Mexican sides are detailed.
The manner in which this book is written really brings history to life, making the reader feel as if they are in 1836 Texas. You read conversations between Travis and Bowie, and also Santa Anna and Houston's thoughts. You follow a young Texan from his narrow escape at Goliad to his part in San Jacinto. See Santa Anna from the view of his closest aides.
This informative book is a highly enjoyable read, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Texas history. If you don't know a lot about the Texas Revolution, this is a great place to start. If you already have some background knowledge, you will still learn a lot from this book, including a greater understanding of the participants in both sides of the Texas Revolution.
Excellent Novization of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution.......1999-10-25
It has been a few years since I have read my autographed copy that I also purchased at the Alamo. The book is an excellent read for any Texas History buff! John Knaggs certainly did his homework! Would love to see more works from this author, especially one on my favorite subject, the Texas Rangers (Not the baseball club!).
Superb book!.......1999-08-05
This is a superb book! I bought it and got it autographed by the author while visiting the Alamo with my wife (a Texan). As an introduction to the history of Texas, this is a real gem.
The fictional characters added to the real history are interesting and serve well their purpose in the book as presenting the story as if it could have been really seen from the real actors. The only thing I would have like is a little "Prologue" telling us what happened after the Battle of the San Jacinto Plains but I guess other books go into these details.
Highly recommended for people interested in learning more about Texas and, well, in history in general!!
A two sided story.......1997-12-10
To my knowledge this is the only account of the Texas revolution in which both the Texan and Mexican viewpoints are revealed. The novel received solid reviews from local newspapers and an endorsement from the state of Texas, and the Library of Congress. An autographed copy may be obtained by calling the author himself at (512) 459-9404. My motivation behind writing this review is that I am quite proud of my father's work on this book and his knowledge of this historical period. The book is also sold at historical sights acroos the state of Texas.(The Alamo, San Jacinto Battlefield, Presidio La Bahia)

Interesting Look at Ancient Technology for Historians and Survivalists.......2005-09-21
I've worked with cedar for several years, splitting posts and rails from culled old growth logs lying around on family forest land. I like working with cedar and this book looked like it might be interesting to read. It did not disappoint, but presented a fascinating description of how the natives used not only wood, but also bark, withes, and roots.
The book is well organized and detailed descriptions of procedures and techniqures are augumented with many fine illustrations and photos. It is an enjoyable read for anyone interested in how to use cedar to provide clothing, shelter, tools, and furniture.
Cedar - Tree of Life is a labor of love & beauty!.......2000-05-28
The Northwest Coastal people held the cedar & its spirit in high regard for all the gifts of life it offered them. For millennia they developed tools & skills to fell the giant trees to make canoes, post-&-beam homes, waterproof boxes & carved poles. Dedicated to those who know & respect the spirit of the Cedar, Hilary Stewart's book is a labor of love, respect & infinite knowledge. It intrigued her that people lived so well & for so long using almost exclusively the materials of their environment & her curiosity has wrought a fine book of early illustrations. A must for anyone interested in how the First People lived.
