New Introduction to Multiple Time Series Analysis
ASIN: 0387948767 |
Book Description
The classical ARMA models have limitations when applied to the field of financial and monetary economics. Financial time series present nonlinear dynamic characteristics and the ARCH models offer a more adaptive framework for this type of problem. This book surveys the recent work in this area from the perspective of statistical theory, financial models, and applications and will be of interest to theorists and practitioners. From the view point of statistical theory, ARCH models may be considered as specific nonlinear time series models which allow for an exhaustive study of the underlying dynamics. It is possible to reexamine a number of classical questions such as the random walk hypothesis, prediction interval building, presence of latent variables etc., and to test the validity of the previously studied results. There are two main categories of potential applications. One is testing several economic or financial theories concerning the stocks, bonds, and currencies markets, or studying the links between the short and long run. The second is related to the interventions of the banks on the markets, such as choice of optimal portfolios, hedging portfolios, values at risk, and the size and times of block trading.
Customer Reviews:
Academic and dated.......2002-04-30
This text is not helpful to the reader who wishes to devise and estimate GARCH models. Moreover it provides no insight into the practical use of these models in the analyses of financial data. Much of the material appears to be lecture notes by an academic who has no idea of how to apply GARCH models. Particularly missing is any discussion of how to estimate the parameters of GARCH models.
primer on ARCH models.......2002-04-25
Gourieroux is an expert in econometrics and has written several excellent texts on time series analysis and its application in economics and finance in particular. This text specializes as a primer on ARCH models. These models are very useful in finance where the time series are often nonlinear and volatile. This text covers the subject in just over 200 pages. Many useful references are provided in the various reference lists at teh back of the book.
A great manual, but pretty hard.......2001-04-20
So far, I own three books of Gourieroux. This one is the first I enjoyed reading. ARCH-type models are pretty recent (Engle, 1982) and I think there is not a plethora of manuals dealing with them at an introductory level. This is not exactly an introductory book; but it covers extensively (till 1993) the topic and gives all the statistical results and demonstrations. The first chapters are particularly good: the introduction is pretty clear and persuasive; the explanation of stationarity proves to be very useful and the examples of no linearity resume well the mathematical tools available nowadays. After that, the challenging part begins: a chapter introducing the ARCH model (all statistical properties appear there), another one dealing with estimation and test procedures, GARCH... Half of the manual is dedicated to interesting (but sometimes pretty complex) financial applications, such as the CAPM model. It has to be said that you require a very solid mathematical knowledge (not for undergraduate economists); otherwise, you will feel frustrated. I personally recommend (for those ignoring everything about ARCH's) to get started with Johnston and Dinardo's brief chapter of ARCH (Econometric Methods), then reading the very same chapter in Ender's manual and then reading Hamilton's ARCH's chapter. Once you understood this literature, you will be able to read comfortably Gourieroux's manual, which is far more complete than the others. There is a lot of mathematical formulation, but this time, Gourieroux explains it better than usual.
It is a Fantastic booK.......2000-05-07
This book is very good book in time series analysis. It is easy to understand and their are many examples and easy language for any body to understand it.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Oxford Chemistry Primers, 32)
ASIN: 0080427987 |
Book Description
Paperback. From the initial observation of proton magnetic resonance in water and in paraffin, the discipline of nuclear magnetic resonance has seen unparalleled growth as an analytical method. Modern NMR spectroscopy is a highly developed, yet still evolving, subject which finds application in chemistry, biology, medicine, materials science and geology. In this book, emphasis is on the more recently developed methods of solution-state NMR applicable to chemical research, which are chosen for their wide applicability and robustness. These have, in many cases, already become established techniques in NMR laboratories, in both academic and industrial establishments. A considerable amount of information and guidance is given on the implementation and execution of the techniques described in this book.
Customer Reviews:
Quality book, but can't compete with the original.......2003-03-16
Just a bit of material to supplement the earlier review... This is a very solid book for advanced users of NMR spectroscopy investigating organic compounds. However, if you can get your hands on it, Derome's "Modern NMR Techniques for Chemistry Research" is better written and clearer to understand. Unfortunately, that book has been out of print for some time and is now hard to find. That said, Claridge's book represents and extra decade's worth of material and you really can't go wrong with either book.
successor to classic.......2000-11-14
Many people have been waiting for the publication of this book. As the successor of one of the most beloved classic NMR texts "Modern Nmr Techniques for Chemistry Research - by A.E.Derome, 1987" it is nicely updated and still nice looking and easy to understand.
For those who want to get some insights on the NMR experiment, it would be a great help. This seems to target organic chemists who use NMR everyday and eager to know what is going on inside, but even serious NMR research may want to see this book. This book includes more recent technique and discussion on the solution NMR, and also some of bried overview on the solid state NMR. Easy to follow explanation, more intuitive and pictorial description would be very helpful to the chemistry student and researchers.

Book Description
The book develops the modern theory of ferroelectricity in terms of soft modes and lattice dynamics and also describes modern techniques of measurement, including X-ray, optic, and neutron scattering, infra-red absorption, and magnetic resonance. It includes a discussion of the related phenomena of antiferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, and ferroelasticity and seconds on domains, thin films, ceramics, and polymers, leading on to a comprehensive survey of potential and actual device capabilities for pyroelectric detection, memories, display, and modulation. It should provide an authoritative account for those engaged in research or graduate ferroelectric or pyroelectric devices.
Customer Reviews:
bible of ferroelectricis.......2001-05-23
this is by far the most detail book on ferroelectric theory and application
The most comprehensive book on the physics of ferroelectrics.......1999-02-16
The book by Lines and Glass is the most comprehensive book on the physics of ferroelectrics that I have come across in the pertinent literature. It is by no means for the novice since a solid background in solid state physics is absoluytely needed. The book especially addresses the lattice dynamics picture of ferroelectricity in a concise manner. Also, optical properties of ferroelectrics are given in full depth that is rather difficult to find in many other texts. This book is by no means a textbook. It is very comprehensive reference volume as it contains a lot of critical experimental data and quite a lot of illustrations. Furthermore, the bibliography is vast. All physical models used in the physics of ferroelectricity are derived/summarized from the very first step making the book very "dense" in content. It would characterize the book as somewhat difficult to read, yet I highly recommend it for those who are interested in the physics of ferroelectric phenomena. I do hope that book will be reprinted soon and be available at an affordable price. Addendum: Since the writing of this review, it seems the book has become available again at a much reduced price ;-)

Book Description
From 1961 to 1968, Helge Ingstad and his wife Anne Stine Ingstad, both archaeologists and acclaimed Viking scholars, conducted seven expeditions at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. The results of their excavations solved one of the world's greatest mysteries: the location of Vinland and the first European settlement in North America.
The Viking Discovery of America combines a first-hand account of the Ingstads' groundbreaking discovery with a compelling history of Viking explorations. This beautifully illustrated volume describes how the authors worked from old Viking sagas, existing research, and their own hypotheses to piece together the story of a group of Vikings, who, faced with crowded conditions in their settlements in Greenland, decided to expand their horizons, eventually discovering a new territory. Readers will also discover fascinating information about navigation techniques, well-known and obscure Viking explorers, their journeys, and the eventual evacuation of their settlement. Full-color maps and photographs from the expeditions help to bring the text alive.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing what a gifted amateur can acomplish!.......2007-03-13
Until Ingstad came along in the late 1950s, there was a principle operating among most U.S. historians which Charles Michael Boland called NEBC: "No Europeans Before Columbus." Then Ingstad, a trained lawyer and natural outdoors and explorer with a wife who was a professional archaeologist, looked again at his astute analysis of the Greenlanders' Saga and Erik's Saga, combined that with his extensive travels in the Arctic, and came to the conclusion that Helluland *had* to be Baffin Island, Markland *had* to be the mid-Atlantic coast of Labrador, and Vinland therefore *had* to be somewhere in the upper part of Newfoundland. To top it off, he was convinced that "Vinland" referred to meadows ("Vin" with a short "I"), not grapevines ("Vin" with a long "I"). In this popular but very informative treatment, he takes the reader step-by-step through his thought processes and explains in an entirely convincing manner why all this *had* to be so. Then, of course, he went out in a small boat, retraced the path Leif had taken (which itself was the reverse of the path Bjarni had taken), and when he got to the tiny, isolated village of L'Anse aux Meadows on the Strait of Belle Isle, he stopped and asked the local fishermen if they knew of any ruins in the area. "Sure do," they replied and the Ingstad spent the next eight years platting and excavating the foundations of a cluster of turf houses, plus a smithy, a kiln, and a row of boathouses on the creek that ran through the meadow. It's a fascinating story and this edition is beautifully illustrated. If you're interested in the Norse, or the history of discovery, or Newfoundland, or archaeology, you'll want to read this book.
Discovering THE Norse site yet found in America.......2006-07-24
This account of Norse explorations in America by Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad, focuses on the ruins they found and excavated, left by Norse settlers near the present village of L'Anse aux Meadows on the northern tip of Newfoundland, somewhere around 1000 AD according to carbon dating. Helge Ingstad, a Norwegian, wrote most of the text of this well illustrated 199-page large-format book. His archeologist wife, in charge of the actual diggings, wrote the chapter on their meticulous uncovering of the ruins of eight turf buildings during the course of seven seasons from 1961 to 1968, the largest of which, House F, contained six main rooms separated by turf walls. Much smaller but of key importance was House J, a working "smithy" in which local bog iron was smelted. The three houses A, B, and C, closely clustered together, have since been restored to original condition to form the core of a Canadian national historic park established in 1977 and open to visitors, complete with "re-enactors" dressed in Old Norse costumes. The site's second-largest house, A, is a longhouse about 75 feet in length with four rooms. Much of the described detail of the actual digs will probably be lost on many general readers, but this chapter does convey a sense of the incredibly slow and painstaking efforts involved in any important archeological dig.
No doubt of greater interest to the non-archeologically inclined will be Helge Ingstad's chapters on the background of the Norse Vinland ventures in the region, including an illuminating analysis of the two pertinent sagas. Of these, the one long believed to be the more authentic ("Erik the Red's Saga"), presumably because of its more sophisticated literary style, many now consider factually the less reliable. Its Icelandic compositor in likely about 1260 seems to have had a copy of the less polished but more sober, matter-of-fact and much more nautically aware "Greenlanders' Saga" in front of him, composed probably at least 60 years earlier and likely by a Greenlander. The redactors of "Erik's Saga" are now thought by many, including Ingstad, to have modified the story to reflect more credit on Thorfinn Karlsefni of a distinguished Icelandic family, while greatly reducing Leif Eriksson's role to that of an accidental discoverer storm-blown clear across the ocean from Norway (against the prevailing westerly winds of these latitudes, I might add as a geographer.) In his assessment of the two sagas Helge Ingstad is basically in agreement with those of Carl Sauer and Erik Wahlgren, though both have strongly disagreed with his contention that the Newfoundland structures are the ruins of Leif Eriksson's houses. The site might have been an outpost occupied for a few years at this strategic location by a group of Norse unrecorded by any extant saga, about four-fifths of the saga material having in any case been irretrievably lost. (See my reviews of the Sauer and Wahlgren books by clicking on the above link).
Be that as it may, this Newfoundland site the Ingstads uncovered has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that Norse did in fact reach North America a thousand years ago, which had been doubted in many quarters prior to that discovery. For that alone they deserve all the enormous credit they have received. And in this lucidly written final work they describe many aspects of Norse exploration and activities in the region with original and illuminating insights.
One reviewer has criticized Ingstad's analysis of the origins of the two Vinland sagas as too derisive of other views and too long. He may have a point, but...? For instance, Ingstad's discussion of the question of whether the Greenlanders' Saga derives directly from a Greenlandic written source preserved in Iceland -- and whether Erik's Saga might be a major Icelandic rewriting of it -- may strike the uninitiated as a self-serving nitpick. But this issue is key to resolving the differences between the two sagas and may go a long way toward explaining the confusion so evident in the descriptions of Erik's Saga regarding such matters as Karlsefni's search for Vinland. Greenlanders were obviously much closer to the events. Carl Sauer in "Northern Mists" (see my review) had also come to a similar conclusion: "The Greenlanders' Saga has continuity, clarity, and for the most part credible description." "[It] in my opinion is the more credible as to sensible course and sequence of voyages and matter-of-fact description of event and place."
By the way, the people we are dealing with were not "Vikings" as the title proclaims, nor does Ingstad use the word in the text except briefly and correctly as a European historical antecedent, never as applied to Iceland, Greenland or Vinland; but it seems we're stuck with it; publishers love the term in titles as it catches the public eye and helps with sales.
For those truly interested in the subject.......2002-10-18
I would have liked to have given this book 2.5 stars, right in the middle, because I really think it's a so-so book. But since the choice was 2 or 3 and 2 was too low, 3 stars it is.
There is certainly a good deal of history and scholarship shown here, and for those such as myself who have an interest in the subject but lay no claim to expertise, much to be gained.
But I couldn't shake the feeling that some academic scores were being settled. Helge Ingstad, who wrote most of the first parts of the book (with his wife, Anne Stine Ingstad, doing the part about the actual L'Anse aux Meadows dig), spends too much time deriding viewpoints alternate to his own. Since it was his line of reasoning that lead to the discovery of the L'Anse aux Meadows site, it seems that focusing on his own arguments should have been enough.
Apparently, though, it wasn't. A major part of the book consists of summaries and analyses of two sagas telling different stories of the Vikings in Greenland and their exploration of North America. One, Erik's Saga, is a ripping good yarn that apparently had been the version favored by scholars. Ingstad makes a convincing argument that the other, The Groenlendinga Saga, is more historically reliable. But he does it at such length (about 1/3 the book) and in such language that the argument comes across as personal as much as academic, as a means of taking pokes at those on the other side of the issue. For example, The Groenlendinga Saga is a "plain, straightforward narrative" of "generally authentic nature," while Erik's Saga is by turns "improbable," "fiction" influenced by fables, "cannot be correct," "more than a little suspect," "incredible," and so on and so on.
The description of the actual dig had a different problem: It was too much "we found this and then under this thick a layer we found this and then we found...." I truly wished for a greater context, more explanation of why a find was significant beyond the fact of proving Viking habitation. A number of times she refers to the depth of a strata though which they dug to find something. Was that significant? How? Why? What does it mean?
The thing is, the book appears to be intended for a general (non-expert) audience. But at times I felt I had either walked into the middle of a scholarly debate or was reading a simplified field report. The result is, it's neither fish nor fowl, which is why I wanted to give it 2.5 stars.
Oh, one final complaint: The quality of photographic reproduction in the book is by and large awful. It gives every indication of being taken from computer printouts of digital photographs, with all the attendant loss of fine detail.
I'd say if you're really interested in the subject, give it a whirl. If your interest is more casual, skip it.
A "must" for Viking history buffs.......2001-03-19
In The Viking Discovery Of America, Helge and Anne Ingstad relate the fascinating and informative story of the excavation of a Norse settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland and what this archaeological survey mean for our understanding of Viking explorations of the Western Hemisphere. With a meticulous scholarship, the Ingstads united the Viking sagas of discovery with engaging details about shipbuilding, navigation, culture, and lifestyle. The Viking Discovery Of America combines scholarly detective work with ground breaking archaeological confirmations to overturn centuries of historical assumptions and documenting Viking contact with the New World centuries before Christopher Columbus. The Viking Discovery Of America is an enthusiastically recommended addition to academic and community library collections, as well as a "must" for Viking history buffs and New World archaeology students.

Apollo 17 - Last Moon Landing of the 20th Century.......2006-08-11
This volume covers the final moon landing in December 1972 in great detail. All aspects of the flight are covered and a great CD ROM is included as a suppliment to the volume. Great reading and it makes the reader wish the Apollo program continued on to Apollo 18. We will have to wait for the next moon landing sometime in the next decade.
The legacy continues.......2003-07-19
This is the best Apollo mission report yet! In this volume you find the documents that concluded Mans greatest adventure. The CD gives more panoramas, and more photos than ever done by Godwin before!
At the end of Apollo, there were more reports about what was found and what was done on the Moon- so I know that there will be at least a couple more books with ALL the mission reports!
This volume has the information dealing with the plans for the mission as envisioned, and the preliminary results of what Apollo-17 yielded from the Moon. Ah.. if we had only gone back to the moon again and again!!!
I can't wait to see the next Apollo-17, volume II.
A bit of a Disappointment.......2002-12-12
If I could, I'd give this book four and a half stars, since it is really not up to the standards of the previous editions. I gave it five stars, however, because others might not agree with my opinion on why it is not as good as the previous Mission Reports.
With the publication of this book, Robert Godwin and Apogee Books have provided at least one volume of reproduced NASA material covering all of the manned Apollo missions. As is obvious from the title, this latest offering, examines Apollo 17, the final mission to the moon. Apollo 17 was the last of the three long duration (3 days) missions and again featured the lunar rover, which greatly extended the area that the two astronauts could explore. In addition, this mission included the only non-pilot, scientist astronaut, a geologist in this case, to explore the moon. The mission was commanded by veteran astronaut, Gene Cernan who was making his third trip into space, geologist and rookie Harrison "Jack" Schmidt accompanied Cernan to the lunar surface as the Lunar Module pilot and Ron Evans was the Command Module pilot.
Like many of the other volumes in this NASA Mission Report series, the book opens with the usual NASA mission press kit. It is easy to tell that the author and his staff spent some time searching for some very clean originals, since compared to their earlier efforts, such as Apollo 8, the scanned in drawings are almost perfect. Since this mission was the last lunar landing mission, it seems that NASA produced a much larger and more detailed press kit compared to its earlier Apollo mission press kits. In addition to the customary background information, the press kit focuses on the scientific aspects of the mission including some nice information on the often overlooked orbital photography observations and in flight experiments. The next section contains the Prelaunch Mission Operation Report, which presents a basic overview of the planned activities of the mission, including the EVA timelines. It is interesting to note that the format of these timelines is still used today to plan EVAs for the space station assembly. The next section presents the Post-Launch Mission Operation Report that provides a summary of the accomplished mission objectives and describes any Mission problems and deviations from these planned activities.
The final section, the crew debrief section, covers about 40% of the book, and is 95 pages long. This section contains the crew's comments and feelings about various phases of the mission from liftoff, to landing and even post flight activities. This crew debriefing is fairly technical and uses a lot of undefined NASA acronyms, which makes the reading a bit difficult, even for this NASA contractor employee. Very few pages in this section are devoted to the EVAs (8 pages) and orbital observations (4 pages) and all three astronauts go into great detail describing all aspects of their respective duties. I found it quite odd, that with all the emphasis on the lunar exploration being conducted by an onsite geologist, that there would be such a small discussion about the EVAs and the geological investigations. Reviewing the crew debriefing shows that Cernan and to some degree Evans dominated the conversations, while Schmidt only talked about specific areas like training. All in all; however, an interesting section.
As typical of all the books in the Mission Reports series, the book contains a CD that includes additional material. It is here that I felt the book let the reader (or viewer is this case) down. Unlike the other books in the series, the CD does not contain any of the still photographs. Instead it only contains complete video camera footage from the three EVAs and twenty-two panoramic views. I would have preferred the still photos in lieu the video transmissions.
Some general information that might be useful.
1) These reports are just scanned-in documents from previously released NASA press kits, etc., In order to preserve the spirit of the original reports, all typographical and grammatical errors have NOT been fixed.
2) Proceeds from the book goes to "The Watch" an asteroid impact research project of the Space Frontier Foundation. In other words, Apogee Books is making very little off the sale of US government produced books and documents.
3) Many people have asked why the post mission reports are not included. Since NASA has published several books with hundred of pages each (The NASA SP series), it would be difficult to included this voluminous amount of data.

Book Description
In the wilderness of Alaska, the rich and abundant salmon runs are being damaged at an alarming rate. Excess sedimentation to the streams of the Kenai Peninsula threatens not only the salmon's continued existence, but also the multitude of people whose economy is dependent upon the annual salmon spawning runs up the tributaries of the Kenai River. The Phoenix Environmental Research Institute (PERI) sends one of its best aquatic biologists, Dr. Chad Gunnings, to investigate this wild corner of North America. When Chad and his associates are attacked at the Anchorage airport by members of the Warrior Society, a native para-military organization, they know that something very secretive is behind the problems in the Kenai. Their adventures take Chad and his colleagues to the site of the Kenai Catastrophe, the site of a 100-year old massacre of an Indian village. What does this catastrophic event have to do with the present-day environmental problems in the Kenai?

Disappointment.......2004-03-25
I wanted to like this book. I work in the environmental field and I was thrilled to see a book billed as "an environmental mystery." The hero is even an aquatic biologist! And, since I had read a favorable review, I was sure I was in for a good read when I ordered this book.
What a disappointment! If there was ever a book desperately in need of a good editor, it is this one. I can only assume that this book must be of the "self-published" variety. By the end of the second page, I had an overwhelming urge to whip out my red pen so I could correct the grammar and restructure sentences. I do a lot of writing and editing in my job, so perhaps I'm more sensitive to these things, but after 4 chapters I couldn't take it anymore and I put the book in my "donate to the library" pile.
Obviously, because this book has received some 5 star reviews, some people aren't bothered by the technical shortcomings of this publication. But, if bad grammar drives you nuts, stay away from this book.
Excellent Book.......2002-12-11
This book is action packed from the very first paragraph onward. It focuses on issues of the environment in a way that the average reader would find very exciting. This Action character depicted in this novel represents the good fight against societies new enemies in an exciting manner. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action/adventure.
Fantastic Story.......2002-12-05
Michael Barbour takes an environmental issue and turns it into a marvelous story. I found myself becoming involved with the characters and not wanting to put the book down once I started reading. Very action packed and great book for all ages.
Fantastic Story.......2002-12-05
Michael Barbour takes a very critical issue with the enviornment and writes a story that is not only interesting but exciting. Once I starting reading, I was so involved I didn't want to put the book down.
After reading Kenai Catastrophe, my next vacation will be in Alaska.
Wonderful!!!...
