Mastering gives a good financial insight to not just asset allocation but to investing in general.

    1 out of 5 stars not useful.......2007-08-03

David's arrogant tone comes through. If you know him you know what I mean. Classic eloquent bs from the "master" of just that. This book is not useful for either implementation or study. He'd be better suited as a professor at a community college than an Advisor to one of the largest firms on Wall St.

If you need to prepare an academic thesis, this might be a reference.
If you need to construct and execute an asset allocation plan, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Darst Hits the Mark........Again.......2006-10-23

Following a "definitive" hand book on a topic as complex as asset allocation is not easy, but Darst has done it again.
"Mastering" takes his work from the first book to the next level. Concise yet thorough, this book is a must for anyone who is trying to "master" the topic.

        Book Description

Rodents represent the largest order of mammals and include rats, mice and squirrels. They carry diseases and are major pests in agriculture (e.g. in rice fields), of stored products, and in urban environments. This book is the only current volume that provides a comprehensive review of rodent pests and their control. The first four chapters establish the pests status of rodents and the need for control. The following six chapters review the principles of rodent control methods and their evaluation, the nature of resistance, and how to assess damage. The final chapters consider the practice of rodent control, including the problems of extending technology to smallholders and evaluating potential environmental hazards. The book is aimed at advanced students of pest management and applied zoology, as well as practitioners in pest control.

                Book Description

The idea of evolution: it fascinates some of us, disturbs others, and leaves only a very few people indifferent. In a major new interpretation of evolutionary theory, Michael Ruse pinpoints the common source of this attraction and discomfort. A renowned writer on evolutionary theory and its history, Ruse has long been sensitive to the fact that many people--and not simply religious enthusiasts--find something deeply troubling about much of what passes for science in evolutionary circles. What causes this tension, he finds in his search of evolutionism's 250-year history, is the intimate relationship between evolution and the secular ideology of progress.

Ubiquitous in Darwin's time, the idea of an unceasing improvement in life insinuated its way into evolutionary theory from the first. In interviews with today's major figures in evolutionary biology--including Stephen Jay Gould, Edward O. Wilson, Ernst Mayr, and John Maynard Smith--and in an intimate look at the discoveries and advances in the history and philosophy of science, Ruse finds this belief just as prevalent today--however it might be denied or obscured. His book traces the delicate line between those who argue that science is and must be objective and those who deem science a "social construction" in the fashion of religion or the rest of culture. It offers an unparalleled account of evolutionary theory, from popular books to museums to the most complex theorizing, at a time when its status as science is under greater scrutiny than ever before.

4 out of 5 stars His pet peeve.......2002-05-12

This massive bit of research into the history of evolutionary thought represents Michael Ruse's attempt to convince fellow scientists to show interest in what he sees as two fundamental issues in evolutionism. The first is the dissonance between it and other scientific enquiries. More specifically Ruse is concerned about the indifference physicists, chemists, and other scientists engaged in the "practical" sciences show towards evolution. They hardly care about evolution's focus on origins and are instead interested in their own experiments. The second issue is Ruse's pet peeve. It is the tendency, which he says he can trace back 250 years, for evolutionism to be influenced by cultural values. More specifically, Ruse says that the idea of social progress has always had a close relationship with evolution. This is the subject which he explores for the vast majority of the book.

The best encapsulation of this idea of Progress (which Ruse describes with a capital "P" to emphasize its significance)is its movement from the simplest biological form to the most complex. Thus we have from MONAD TO MAN. Ruse says that the idea "that there will be an ongoing improvement of human society through human effort was the parent idea of evolution, which was taken to have at its heart the idea of biological progress." He shows that it was in fact the norm in Darwin's time. But is it still so today, and of critical importance to readers of this book, does Ruse make a convincing argument that it is so? More importantly still, does he make a case to convince his fellow scientists to care? I say yes to the first part (and at over 600 pages his book had better be convincing!) He points out that from about the 1950's there was a shift and evolutionary science became more objective. Ruse is very convincing in showing that this was not as a result of scientists giving up belief in social or biological Progress, but merely the suppressing of these ideas at the behest of professionalizers.

I doubt that he's convinced too many of his colleagues though. It seems instead that he's annoyed them. One scientist commenting on the book in the "National Review" said Ruse's belief that progress was a cultural value was a "stretch" and that "to suggest as he does that such a belief actually affects the content of contemporary evolutionary biology is simply unjustified." I'd suggest you read and decide for yourself. It's worth it considereing some of the present day scientists he interviewed and whose work he looks at - Stephen Jay Gould, Ernst Mayr, John Maynard Smith, and E.O. Wilson. The only caveat is the size of the book and that in making sure that he's not a "popularizer" himself, Ruse does not write with the general reader in mind.

                      Book Description

Michael Strelow weaves the story of a town and its mysteries in his debut novel, The Greening of Ben Brown, an Oregon Book Award Finalist for fiction 2005. Ben Brown, the protagonist, becomes a citizen of East Leven, Oregon, after he recovers from an electrocution that has not left him dead but has turned him green. He befriends 18 year-old Andrew James and together they unearth a chemical spill cover-up that forces the town to confront its demons and its citizens to choose sides. Strelow's lyrical prose and his talent for storytelling come together in this poetic and important first work that looks at how a town and the natural environment are inextricably linked. The Greening of Ben Brown will find itself in good company on the shelves between Winesburg, Ohio and To Kill a Mockingbird and readers of both will have a new story to cherish.

                      5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2006-01-10

I love plants, and for some reason I picked up this book. I'm normally not an impulse shopper, but this one just grabbed me. I found The Greening of Ben Brown to be a hysterical spoof on much that is sacred in this funny world we live in. The author can really write...when he wrote about green, I felt and saw GREEN. And when he wrote about wet, I felt like I was in a downpour. Much like a Tom Robbins novel, this book just kept me giggling, yet it had a timeless message as well. I'd definitely recommend it, and rate it next to my other favorites such as Bee Season, Memoirs of a Geisha and Kite Runner.

                        Book Description

Between 1940 and 1945, 110,000 of the 140,000 Dutch Jews were deported to the death camps in Eastern Europe. 80% never returned. In Anne Frank and After the authors focus on two main questions: how exactly did this happen, and how has Dutch literature come to terms with this appalling event? In the book's final chapter they analyze the relationship between history and the literature of the Holocaust. Does literature add to what we know or does it actually distort historical evidence? Based on the work of leading historians of the period, the book examines literary works from Gerard Durlacher, Anne Frank, W.F. Hermans, Harry Mulisch, Gerard Reve and many others.
"With its well-chosen quotations (many appearing for the first time in print), presented in a clear and illuminating historical setting, Anne Frank and After is must reading for all who want to go beyond Anne Frank for a more rounded picture of wartime Holland and its Jews."

                                Book Description

Rhetorical Figures in Science breaks new ground in the rhetorical study of scientific argument as the first book to demonstrate how figures of speech other than metaphor have been used to accomplish key conceptual moves in scientific texts. Examples, both verbal and visual, range across disciplines and centuries to reaffirm the positive value of these once widely-taught devices.

5 out of 5 stars Best new book on science and rhetoric; a classic in waiting.......2002-03-11

"Once and for all," Jeanne Fahnestock argues in her soon-to-be-a-classic book, "the figures should come out of the cabinet of curiosities" (23). If the diligent, imaginative, bracing scholarship of Rhetorical figures in science does not accomplish that goal, then I'm a monkey's uncle: this book is a masterwork: easily the most important book in rhetoric of science over the last decade: among the most important books in rhetoric-period over at least the same stretch: the foremost contribution to figuration since I don't know when, maybe since Peacham: a study no one in the field of rhetoric can afford to do without: get it.

Rhetorical figures in science is a book with many virtues: a compelling case for figures as arguments; a superb history of figuration, which brings it into revealing alignment with topoi and enthymemes; a series of excellent to stunning critical readings; and one of the most astute and lucid readings of Aristotle's corpus in years

                                      Second edition
With a new foreword by Lynton Keith Caldwell

In Managing the Environmental Crisis William R. Mangun and Daniel H. Henning provide a balanced and comprehensive guide to the management of complex environmental and natural resource policy issues. Taking into account new developments, trends, and issues that have arisen in recent years, the authors begin with the recognition, often overlooked, that it is not the environment that needs to be managed but human action relating to the environment.
The authors review issues associated with a range of environmental policy concerns, including energy considerations, renewable and non renewable resource management, pollution control, wilderness management, and urban and regional policy. The history of these issues, recent actions pertaining to their management, difficulties associated with their continued presence, and the consequences of a failure to address these concerns are explored. Though focused on specific political issues, Mangun and Henning direct their attention to two large-scale trends—globalization and the political polarization of the environmental movement. At the level of the decision-making process, the incorporation of values—specifically addressed from multicultural and cross-disciplinary perspectives—is also discussed. International in scope, the book provides descriptions of the roles of both governmental and nongovernmental organizations in the formulations and implementation of national and global environmental policy.
This thoroughly revised second edition discusses various successes in the arenas of environmental cooperation and management strategy while pointing to the new challenges that have emerged in the last decade.
