A collection of topical papers from various sources, especially the Credit Scoring and Control conferences in Edinburgh. This is the largest dedicated credit scoring conference in the world, held every two years. Although it does not hang together well, it gives a good understanding of what many of the issues are today.

I ordered this book for a paper that I had to write for one of my courses. It covers so much ground and it is easily understood.

There is a study that is mentioned in this book about police responding to domestic violence calls and that these calls are considered the most dangerous. According to this study, they are not, the FBI statistics were inflated because of the category that those calls were under. This is completely different from something that has been drilled into me in my courses through lecture. I have not seen it in any of my text books. It made me stop and rethink.
I had no previous knowledge of this subject. I am still not an expert. I do have a more solid foundation because of its thoroughness.

The Invisible Woman...was a required text in a college course I attended at San Francisco State University. I found it to be very helpful in understanding complex issues surrounding women and the criminal injustice system.

Further, the book discusses issues surrounding the condition of women in relation to race, class, gender and political economy that many texts fail to disect honestly and realistically. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in educating themselves or others to the trails and tribulations women encure within the criminal injustice system!

I used this book for a college course and it was very easy to read, easy to understand, and held my attention. It's the first time I've wanted to read my school books! It was great about teaching specific statistics of women offenders, women victims, and professional women working in the criminal justice system. This book is an excellent way to educate yourself about AIDS. Dr. Stine explains the medical terms and the basis of the disease in a way that is very clear without being too simplistic. In addition to general information about HIV/AIDS, there is very new and specific information about research progress. This is an excellent resource for the most current collection of information on the subject.

As one who is a generation younger than Dwight Macdonald and therefore came of age in the time that he was writing these letters this was of great interest.
I regret that I was generally unaware of his writings at the time but am sincerely grateful to have had this belated opportunity to sample them.
The political and literary culture of the middle 50 years of the 20th century are brilliantly explicated. As one with the courage to take on the Stalinists on the left and the McCarthyites on the right he deserves a more prominent place of honor in the literary annals of this country.
I look forward to reading "A Rebel in Defense of Traddition".
Update: 23 September, 2002--
Having now read the Michael Wreszin's biography "A Rebel in Defense of Tradition" I am ready to reiterate my praise for the life and works of Dwight Macdonald with the reservation that Macdonald was a complex and often difficult personality.
Quoting from the review of Christopher Lehmann-Haupt "Dwight Macdonald emerges as a hugely appealing figure in these pages. Mr. Wreszin lends sense somehow to every step in his subject's sometimes erratic reasoning"
Macdonald was certainly on occasion erratic but in the end he was HONEST, COURAGEOUS and mostly RIGHT.

Eminently Forgetable.......1999-06-24

For better or worse the "history of history" has become a major precoccupation for intellectual historians. Scholars such as Carl Schorske, Robert Darnton, Hayden White, and Rogier Chartier have contributed valuable insights into the ways in which we conceive history. Within this context, Roth's book is a simplistic attempt to summarize "the history of the history of history." His explications and interpretations are not only typical examples of academic hermeticism; they are also clunky and obvious. The attempt to present the writing of history as analogous to pschoanalysis suggests that the author has only the most superficial understanding of either discipline.

You would be well advised to skip this book and go to the sources already mentioned, as well as to such important historians as Carlo Ginzburg, Carlo Cippoli, Jacques Le Goff, Jackson Lears, Anson Rabinbach, Terry Castle, or any number of others. These scholars have come to their theoretical positions the old fashioned way--by undertaking original, primary research that led them to question their methods and assumptions--and for that reason have a vitality and engagement with the issues lacking here.

A polished gem.......2000-06-20

I bought this book six years ago and have kept it within reach ever since. Open it up at a random page and you will find a gem of an essay on Babylonian astronomy, mummification techniques, the first etnographer, or urban planning in ancient Greece. Sarton has managed to compress more than thirty centuries of scientific history in 600 pages without becoming superficial. He starts with the Babylonians and ends with the ancient Greeks. Nothing is omitted. You will read about astronomy, astrology, biology, mathematics, literature, history, crafts, technical achievements, etnography, trade and economics, mining, government organization, law, medicine, animal husbandry, and - of course - philosophy.

George Sarton writes balanced, with authority and clarity, but first and foremost with great love for his subject. His view is balanced and spiced with an enormous number of delightful details. Did you know that the first Greek colonists brought an urban planner with them? Or that citizens of Athens received a tax credit in 473BC because of a windfall in mining revenues? The Egyptian scientist who got it wrong but asked the right question will have Sarton's sympathy. The Greek philosopher who made his name by reycling ideas stolen from the Babylonians is condemned.

I should stop writing before I get carried away. Let me say one more thing: it is truly astonishing that this book has not become an instant bestseller.
