        Book Description

This book starts by examining the state of the stable employment relationship in the context of rapid globalization and technological change. Mass dismissals, high unemployment, the rise of part-time and temporary jobs reveal that work in the new labour market is very different from that of the past. However, the authors put forward convincing evidence that the long-term employment relationship is more resilient than commonly thought. While offering comparative analysis of employment stability and flexibility in 16 OECD countries, this study then provides a detailed analysis on the type of labour market regulations needed to ensure a balance of employment flexibility and security. In particular, it studies the linkages between employment protection and labour market policies in four countries, Denmark, France, Japan and the United States.

        Book Description

Efficient Methods for Valuing Interest Rate Derivatives provides an overview of the models that can be used for valuing and managing interest rate derivatives. Split into two parts, the first discusses and compares the traditional models, such as spot- and forward-rate models, while the second concentrates on the more recently developed Market models. Unlike most of his competitors, the author's focus is not only on the mathematics: Antoon Pelsser draws on his experience in industry to explore the practical issues, such as the implementation of models, and model selection.
Aimed at people with a solid quantitative background, this book will be of particular interest to risk managers, interest rate derivative traders, quantitative researchers, portfolio and fund managers, and students of mathematics and economics, but it will also prove invaluable to anyone looking for a good overview of interest rate derivative modelling.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally... a road map to interest rate models!!!.......2003-08-07

I had a strong background in equity derivative models but found the leap to interest rate models difficult. What are the relationships between short rates, forward rates, and term structure? How do assumptions translate into restrictions on our ability to model the "stylized facts" of interest rates? How are assumption violations "corrected" by practitioners?

This book answers all of these questions in a straightforward yet rigorous manner. Explanations are supplemented with simple examples.

After reading this book, I had the roadmap and analytical context I needed to tackle implementation focused books like Brigo and Mercurio.

As a bonus, this book provides a very nice summary of major valuation tools. (Monte Carlo simulation of martingale processes, development of pricing PDE via Feynman-Kac, development of fundamental solutions, etc.)

5 out of 5 stars Begin your BGM, Libor & Swap market model journey here........2003-03-02

If you want a concise, clearly written and excellently explained introduction to the cutting edge interest rate models used in dealing rooms today. Look no further. With an elementary stochastic calculus background from Rennie & Baxter, this book is very readable, even on a crowded train! For those who want more details & case studies, have Interest Rate Models by Brigo & Mercurio as a companion text. With useful tips on Libor & swap market model implementation, and a whole chapter devoted to convexity correction. One of the best texts on the subject I have read.

        Book Description

Dry examines the U.S. Supreme Court's treatment of the First Amendment freedoms of religion and speech against the founding of the American Constitution and its philosophical underpinnings.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Prof. Dry educates us deeply in the American Founding.......2007-06-22

Prof. Dry provides a deep and clear account of the thought of the eminent political and legal thinkers before, during and after the Founding.

Most books and classes on the First Amendment discuss only the last part of the relevant history, the Supreme Court cases of the 20th century. Neglected are the political ideas and disputes of religious leaders such as Winthrop, Penn, and Williams, the debates among of the Founders and the Framers, and the evolution of rights in the state constitutions. Prof. Dry gives an erudite discussion of First Amendment jurisprudence, but only after laying out the philosophical and theological foundation for that jurisprudence.

Few scholars are as able today as Prof. Dry to succeed in such a task. A student of Herbert Storing, the remarkable commentator on and editor of the Anti-Federalist writings, Prof. Dry has contemplated and taught the American Founding and Constitutional Law for three decades.

Both students and scholars will find this work full of illuminating and rare insight.

                Book Description

This book introduces the reader to statistical reasoning and its use in physics. It differs from other treatments of physics for nonscientists in its wide-ranging use of quantitative methods, which assume only that the reader can add, subtract, multiply and divide with confidence. The author begins with a self-contained introduction to the everyday uses of probability, including the quantitative assessment of statistical information. The author develops the basic idea of mechanical motion, the molecular theory of gases, entropy as a measure of molecular agitation, limitations on the conversion of heat to work, the physics of the direction of time; chaos, and the role of probability in quantum mechanics. To aid self instruction, there are solved problems at the end of each chapter. This book is perfect for undergraduate physics students and nonscience majors.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous text for nonmajors.......2002-12-17

I ran into this book by accident (or "luck" as the author would say). I perused the section on entropy, which is one of the most misunderstood but widely used terms. The treatment was crystal clear and deep. I then wandered off to sample the rest of the book, when I realized it was for non-specialists. It has been my pet peeve that most attempts at popularization consist of simply material written for professionals with the equations deleted, making them uniformly useless to all parties concerned. This book is a refreshing exception aimed at a reader who is willing to do the requisite work and enjoy the satisfaction of really understanding the basics of probability and its applications to statistical physics. While not everything in this subject can be explained to nonexperts, the author has carefully chosen a path that I know will make sense to a diligent reader and give a true flavor for the subject and genuine sense of accomplishment at the end. All that is required is a minimum knowledge of algebra and a true desire to really understanding something, rather than a craving for the "warm and fuzzy" feeling
of having understood something profound without the requisite effort.

Of late more and more colleges have tried to expose nonscientists to quantitative reasoning. Now, such a course has to be about something. Why not Statistical Physics, which on the one hand is incredibly far reaching in its consequences and on the other, accessible with minimum of preamble. There is no longer the excuse that a suitable text does not exist. Here it is, so go ahead and use it for self-study or your class! The section on entropy alone will make it worthwhile. Finally, even if you know all the physics, this will teach you how write the most elegant prose.

"Modernity" is a troubling concept, not only for scholars but for the general public, for it seems to represent a choice between oppressive traditions and empty, rootless freedom. Seeking a broader understanding of modernity, Kolb first considers the views of Weber and then discusses in detail the pivotal writings of Hegel and Heidegger. He uses the novel strategy of presenting Heidegger's critique of Hegel and then suggesting the critique of Heidegger that Hegel might have made.

Kolb offers his own views, proposing the possibility of a meaningful life that is free but still rooted in shared contexts. He concludes with comments on "postmodernity" as discussed by Lyotard and others, arguing persuasively against the presupposition of a unified Modern or Postmodern Age.

                          Book Description

The writing of English history has mainly been framed without taking note of the Jewish presence at all; here, for the first time, Jews are shown as an integral part of English religious and social history. David S. Katz examines hitherto unexplored topics such as the Jewish advocates of Henry
VIII's divorce and the Jewish conspirators of Elizabethan England, as well as contributing to continuing debate on subjects such as the role of Jewish finance and the emergence of Anglo-Jewish institutions. This extensively researched and readable history of the Jews in England over almost four
centuries will be essential reading for those interested in English and Jewish history alike.

In observation of the bicentenary of Erasmus Darwin's death, Cambridge is publishing this collection of personal writings by his grandson Charles. This is the first unabridged publication of a book by Charles Darwin, and it contains a series of illuminating insights into his grandfather's life and work. With quotations from letters and candid comments by Charles Darwin about his books; and free of the conventions of scientific writing; this small volume of personal observations illuminates the life of a distinguished scientist as seen by his accomplished successor.

Are they needed? To be sure. The Darwinian industry, industrious though it is, has failed to provide texts of more than a handful of Darwin's books. If you want to know what Darwin said about barnacles (still an essential reference to cirripedists, apart from any historical importance) you are forced to search shelves, or wait while someone does it for you; some have been in print for a century; various reprints have appeared and since vanished."
                                    —Eric Korn,Times Literary Supplement

Charles Robert Darwin (1880-1882) has been widely recognized since his own time as one of the most influential writers in the history of Western thought. His books were widely read by specialists and the general public, and his influence had been extended by almost continuous public debate over the last 130 years. New York University Press' edition makes it possible for the first time to review Darwin's public literary output as a whole, plus his scientific journal articles, his private notebooks, and his correspondence.

This is the first complete edition containing all of Darwin's published books, featuring definitive texts recording original paginations with Darwin's indexes retained. All illustrations and plates are presented, inclucing 82 color plates of birds and mammals and several folding maps and plates. The set also features a general introduction and index, and textural introductions in each volume.

Elizabeth May has done a much needed job of making sense of all the double-speak that surrounds the forest industry in Canada. When all is said and done, the facts that she uncovers stand as damning evidence regarding the unsustainability of logging in all of Canada's provinces. As such, this book will no doubt be unpopular with the Canadian timber industry and its spin doctors.

1 out of 5 stars How to scare the public into funding your cause........1999-10-15

When will the 'environmental movement' start to put energy into the real battle we have but do not want to fight? Chemicals in our food. The forest industry of Canada is working very hard to meet the publics insatiable demand for forest products. This same public wants 97 cent toilet paper but they don't want to cut a tree to get. The time to take responsibility for our actions is now. As long as we are able to blame an industry for our own greed we can sit back and feel good about ourselves as if we are not the problem. Wake up folks. If we were willing to pay the real value of forest products we would not have to cut as many trees. The 'save the forest battle' is not to be fought with the industry but with the real culprit, the public! One more thing. Canada's forest are growing. We have more forest today than we did one hundred years ago. Hats off to an industry doing it's best to meet public demand AND manage our forests.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent critique of forestry mismanagement in Canada........1999-01-07

Elizabeth May has written a who-dunit for Canada's forest industry -- a book filled with intrigue and suspense, villains and backroom deals, shady characters and conspiracy. "At the Cutting Edge" is a fierce critique of forestry management in Canada, of both the industry and government.

If you aren't an environmentalist already, "At the Cutting Edge" will certainly convert you. Written in a straight-to-the-heart style, this book is a page-turner, with an incredulous tale of industry greed and government duplicity.

But the book is also an unparalleled piece of journalism. May is an unrelenting journalist, dissecting forestry management across Canada and province-by-province with a surgeon's skill and attention to detail. Yet she always manages to keep readers focused on "the big picture" -- the upcoming shortage of Canadian wood.

She does this by focusing on how each province calculates its Annual Allowable Cut (AAC) and showing how governments include essentially unusable land to inflate the AAC for industry's benefit. May also makes sound economic arguments against the technique of clear-cutting, and shows how governments subsidize industry and undervalue forests through low stumpage rates.

"At the Cutting Edge" is essential reading for politicians, journalists, investors, environmentalists -- and every citizen who has ever thought that perhaps we may be cutting down too many trees.
