Very few bopks cover this subject are so comprehensively for the non-praactitioner. I really felt I had a grip on Securities Lending and Finance by the time I finished this book.

Recommended highly

an education about repos.......2006-05-29

The chapters are written by various people, often active in companies involved in creating or trading these securities or repos. Thus, an author from Countrywide Securities, and another from Ernst and Young. Also, the book is very recent.

Hence, you get a good education in current understanding and practices involving the lending of securities. There is a natural progression in logic, from the base securities to options and repos that are derivatives of this base. Plus, several chapters address the key issue of what are the various types of risks involved, and how to quantify these.

Too Little for the Price.......2005-01-13

Yipes, $100 and there's nothing of import in the book (which by the way is a compilation of thoughts by various contributors) except for the rudiments that you could get in simpler language from a free Fed publication! How about adding some value, Mr. author? Discussion of the 'specials market' in repo, the Fed's securities lending program, fails, and how to evaluate trading are examples of things I wanted to learn but did not.

The book came out in 2002 and was certainly written before the events of September 2001. Certainly seems germane nowadays. It tries to systematically study terrorism. Its causes and its tactics. Needless to say, when I turn to the index and look up hijacking, none of the book's instances refer to the possibility of kamikazes. This is how we can tell that it was written before September 2001.

The book is mostly concerned with counterterrorism methods, of course. Much of this very relevant. Practical advice that can be taken regardless of the ideologies of the terrorists. There are no real surprises here in terms of techniques. Though the book does have some insightful anecdotes about actual events.

A book which should be read by all first responders..........2002-02-10

This book gives you the vital information you need to perform your duties as a first responder as well as showing security and safety managers what is expected of them also. The information is given in bite size chunks so as to aid in the retention of the material. The pictures and tables are very helpful in getting the key ideas across. The case studies of both the Oklahoma and first WTC attack are noteworthy for their detail. If you are responsible for the safety of persons or a first responder this is one book you should read and take to heart.

Very Useful.......2002-10-31

This 32-page pamphlet is quite useful. It certainly convinced me to go the route of planting dwarf trees on my small suburban yard. The content is very good. A tree zone map, a fairly comprehensive tables of trees, and a small list of suppliers are all included. The site planning section was very handy and the information about planting and maintenance are solid. My one complaint is that I wish it were perhaps a bit more solidly published.

Two times too much.......2002-02-02

Jim Harrison, in a promo blurb, says that the introduction alone is worth the price of the book. Close but not quite right. The introduction is the best part of the book. That and the picture on the book cover. This book is a collection of previously published essays and magazine stories. Two times too much for most of them. A mundane, wordy chronicle of action sports and poetry by a dilettante who is forever quoting his poet soul brother, rainer maria rilke, another dabbler who perfected the art of guesting and frivolous flitting about under the guise of meaningful experience. This book has nothing new to say. Second hand and second rate.

Letters home: simple and touching.......2006-12-08

This is a collection of the Civil War letters written by John Pardington to his wife Sarah. Pardington, from Michigan, was a member of the Iron Brigade, having enlisted in the summer of 1862. From camp life in and around Washingon to the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, Paddington faithfully writes his wife with particulars about army routines, concerns for staying healthy, and the misery of being so far away from her and their baby. He is rarely concerned with giving details about military maneuvers, his opinions about his officers, or with battle incidentals. He's a sensitive man and never fails to express his love for his family and the amount he misses them. He misses them so much that on a few occasions he thinks out loud to Sarah about deserting, but couldn't bare the disgrace. He worries about money and gives Sarah advice over the miles; he also warns her about friends and family members about whom he has questionable opinions. After Chancellorsville, his unit marches to Gettysburg, where the letters will suddenly end; Paddington was killed there on the first day of the battle. In one of his last letters he derides the activities of the Copperheads: "they seem bound for peace if it sacrifices the Union. It seems poor encouragement for us." (This has a haunting 2006 ring to it.) I found Pardington's patriotism admirable, though probably it was typical. The letters, which are unpolished and simple, are nevertheless heartfelt and compelling. Although not filled with the kind of information the historian might be interested in, they add a very human touch to a cause and conflict Pardington fought bravely for, and for which he finally gave his life.

Out of the Past: ACW Soldier Speaks to Us from His Heart.......2002-06-17

There are several published books of letters and diaries written by American Civil War (ACW) soldiers --from both sides of the conflict.

Enriching our understanding of the human heart in impossible circumstances is "Dear Sarah: Letters Home from a Soldier of the Iron Brigade," edited with loving care by the soldier's descendant Coralou Peel Lassen.

In my opinion it goes without saying that this recent contribution is refreshing, of great value to not only the modern reader but to posterity, too, to those who want to know more about the men --and women; the real human beings, who lived through and endured the American Civil War. This volume also illuminates the nature of not only the American Civil War but all war.

The Iron Brigade Soldier who wrote to Sarah was a young Union soldier named John Henry Pardington. The intense personal nature of his letters, what he writes about and how, is more than touching. The letters left by John Pardington offer a glimpse into the mind and soul of a man in the midst of a terrible situation and how he copes with it, how it defines him, shapes him, and how he continues to triumph over adversity.

After reading several pages I already felt like I was becoming familiar with the people "back home" that this soldier wrote about 140 years ago. I began to feel the pain of his separation from his wife and daughter, the pain of every aching joint and privation he endured. The more I opened up to John Pardington and the realities of his life at war, the more psychologically invested I became --and the more I read. Knowing the inevitable outcome made some letters particularly poignant. And painful. Often, I found the book emotionally overwhelming and put it down, reflecting. Sometimes I re-read passages with a fresh insight --from John's point of view. It isn't too much to say the book is, at turns and by its nature, not only a body blow but also eye-opening. Reading firsthand accounts of how soldiers of the Iron Brigade's 24th Michigan Infantry lived and died day by day in 1862-63 can leave one feeling "beat" inside, symptomatic of the tremendous impact the reality of John Pardington's life.

I think Ms. Lassen has really done an excellent job editing John's letters. One would think any student of history (or humanity) would want to read this book because John's words are universal. He was a Union soldier of the American Civil War, but his triumphs and failures, needs and wants, yearnings and hopes, etc., are an insight into the psyche of men away at war of all times. Her triumph is bringing John's words to the modern reader and to posterity. If one wanted to know how a soldier might be feeling or what he/she might be thinking, from Marathon to the Persian Gulf, one can find the essence of the human spirit, a soldier's dilemma, distilled and evolving in the letters of John Pardington.

John Pardington's human face on a large historical event; his evident love and longing; his deeply human and often tender observations made me again wonder why there must be conflict, wars that kill far too many John Pardingtons and leave the world a poorer place. Is there such a thing as a tragic triumph? If so, John Pardington's triumph in expressing himself, in his very being, is all the more tragic because of his death at Gettysburg. He probably never imagined his words would one-day reach out across the years to so many people. He would probably be surprised. Rather than flustered or embarrassed to have his innermost thoughts laid bare, I like to think he would ultimately see how his own life matters today, and always.

These are the letters of George Washington Partridge, Jr., who enlisted in the Union Army in August, 1861, in the Seventh Wisconsin Volunteers, fought in the Iron Brigade, a Western brigade in the Army of the Potomac, and was killed at Gettysburg in the first day's fighting, July 1, 1863, at age 23. The letters are to his sisters in Erie, Pennsylvania, and in Waukegan, Illinois. Partridge fought in the Iron Brigade from its beginning until its end, from Gainesville, the Second Battle of Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, until Gettysburg, and wrote to his sisters about all but the last.

He writes about life in camp, picket duty, learning courage, discipline, burying the dead, marches, battle, and sometimes boredom, progressing from an eagerness to fight to wishing the war were over, and doing his best by fighting hard to make it so. His letters are direct, colloquial, honest, with little sentimentality and no religiosity. They show his growth in character and an affecting dignity we all would like to share.

I am a native of Erie, Pennsylvania, where George Washington Partridge, Jr. was born more than a century and a half ago. He was my great-great uncle. His letters have come down through four generations and are published here for the first time. I have provided their historical frame, their place in the Civil War, and more particularly, their sequence in the actions of the Iron Brigade.

A Special Viewpoint of the Common Soldier.......2004-12-14

This small but important collection of letters bears the stamp of the common soldier through and through. Partridge's political and personal attitudes towards the war reflect what modern scholars have come to identify as the norm among Federal soldiers during the early part of the war. Written in a simple and direct style, Partridge brings us inside the 7th Wisconsin by sharing his attitudes and experiences on the events he lives. This is complemented by a short commentary by Hugh Whitehouse, who offers brief and intelligent psychological insights and a historical context to understand Partridge's letters. After journeying with Partridge through the joys, hopes, fears and discomforts of his soldiering life, one feels a loss when he is killed at the battle of Gettysburg and his letters come to an end.

Excellent historical content, and interesting to read!.......1999-03-23

I thought this book was well laid out by it's author, who happens to be a descendant from the subject's family. The historical content is excellent, and provides some good insight for history buffs and reenactors alike on the personal opinions and emotions of a soldier in the 7th Wisconsin of the Iron Brigade. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to know more about the men of the legendary Black Hats! In all, a total of 27 letters are published here from George Washington Partridge, Jr. to his sisters, giving the reader a first-hand account of the Civil War through the eyes of a Union soldier.

Still have room for improvement.......2000-06-08

After reviewing the book, I were impressed by the information that is made available to me. However, I think there is still room for improvement.

1. The author may wish to include more working example for differrent scenario.

2. I am a bit disappointed on the explosion chapter. I would have thought that the author may present cases that an actual explosion (e.g. bomb) that occur infront of the structure or any system and suggest some method of protection (with calculation to justify the cases).
