Book Description
Predatory Bender covers the nitty-gritty of lives in the consumer finance industry. Salespeople used borrowers and profits flowed to some of the largest banks in the world. The book is a novel with a non-fiction afterward about reforming the industry.
Customer Reviews:
Funny book, worth reading if interested in finance and law.......2007-02-09
The book is funny in parts, occassionally slow but overall a good read. Get an editor. Or at least Spellcheck.
Mr Lee obviously doesn't believe in free markets or the american way, which is why very few will ever read this book. Next time you put your pen to paper, Mr. Lee, try going deeper into intellectual tangents. Since over educated leftists are the only people who would pick up this aesthetically degenerate tome, make Clausewitz, the Tao Te Ching, and all that other garbage more relevant. It's all interesting stuff, might as well tap into that a little more since your audience is undoubtedly "out there."
Beating the devil with an ugly stick.......2004-01-26
A great read! The steam was still rising off the words when I sat down to read Mr. Lee's novel about a predatory lender and the colorful group of characters bobbling about it. The characterizations are heavy-handed, yet curiously deft; there can be no doubt as you read about EmpiGroup and its no-holds-barred leader, Sandy Vyle, that you're getting a rollicking send up of Citigroup, the Borg corporation that glides through American financial life with the message that "resistance is futile."
This is not an English major's novel (Mr. Lee could have used a better proofreader and a tough editor), but if you're sick of corporations that run the world, government regulators who run interference for them, and journalists for whom the term "investigative" is a historical curiosity, then buy this book and enjoy several hours of a smart, funny writer who clearly enjoys mixing it up with the Big Boys. In the end the EmpiGroups of the world will win, but Mr. Lee gives them a few bruises to remember him by.
Bender is a Must.......2003-12-18
Predatory Bender is in the best of the Mucraking tradition. What Upton Sinclair is to exposing the meat industry, Matthew Lee is to exposing predatory lenders. This book is captivating; its characters are complex and leap off the page. The protagonist himself is complicated. Although he can be absolutely disgusting, he also shows remorse for his lending misdeeds and seeks, in his self-serving way, to expose the worse elements in the industry. To a well-read layperson, predatory lending is becoming too familiar through numerous media accounts of the last few years. Mr. Lee's book will hopefully push the national momentum to do something over the top, and will motivate Congress and the federal government to outlaw this heinous practice. Just as it was necessary for the federal government to create standards for the food industry, it is necessary for the government to establish strong protections in the lending industry so that hard-working families do not lose their wealth at the hands of predatory lenders. We all should thank Mr. Lee for making a valuable contribution to the national discourse over this pressing problem. Predatory Benders is a must read! Buy it for your loved ones for a holiday gift!
Awful!.......2003-12-16
While the goals of the author may be noble in that he's trying to combat the wrong that is predatory lending, this book is a litle too simple, a little too boring, and more than a little in need of an editor (Typos litter the book, but the stream of consciousness "writing style" is a little tough to take).
The book is a little too simplistic in its indictment of predatory lending. The thesis seems to be that caveat emptor should be turned on its head, and somehow multi-billion dollar corporations are supposed to step in a tell someone that they maybe shouldn't buy a new bed, or a new stereo from Rent-a-center, etc., or that consumers shouldn't bother reading contracts that they sign.
The author fails to understand that while predatory and abusive lending is bad, there may be a purpose for appropriate sub-prime lending. The author fails to grasp the notion that maybe loans to borrowers with poor credit records should be priced a little higher given the risk of lending to someone who has defaulted or been slow to pay in the past.
Predatory Bender: book exposes predatory lenders with humor.......2003-12-05
"Predatory Bender" by Matthew Lee is a sharp book that aims to expose a sharp practice: the ways in which banks target poor communities with high cost loans, foreclose on people's homes, and trap them in debt. The novel is set in a low income part of New York, the Bronx. A woman gets a loan, not to buy a house but a bed, strangely or appropriately enough. She is sold insurance; all told, she owes over five thousand dollars. The man making the loan, Jack Bender, at first laughs, but soon enough things change for him. His own company, the so-called EmpiGroup, seemingly based on the world's largest bank, turns on him, sicking the police on him. He offers evidence first to a dodgy community activist-type, then to a similarly (but differently) dodgy plaintiffs' lawyer, who approaches the attorney general, who because ambitious is in league with Empi, and things go from there. The chief executives of Empigroup, including one hired from the Clinton cabinet, are caricatured as they try to put out this unlikely bed-loan fire. But the fire just grows...
With this novel, Mr. Lee has defied expectations, at least of this reader. The book is not simplistic; it does not paint all consumers as pure and all lenders as ruthless. Everyone is subject to some satire, including characters we'd assume are near or dear to the author (drawing this assumption from www.innercitypress.org/formedia.html). "Predatory Bender," as novel, is a dark comedy, a sort of subprime lending Catch-22, or reminiscent of the fiction of another (then) Bronx writer, Don DeLillo. Neither analogy quite captures it -- "Predatory Bender" is truly a unique book, or books -- its afterword, "Predatory Lending: Toxic Credit in the Global Inner City," is printed upside down, such that the book can be started from either direction. The afterword is keyed to the novel's 60 chapters; one may wish to jump from one to the other and back, as in the Internet's hypertext mark-up language. By the end of the experience, one knows more about predatory lending and those who suffer, practice and profit from it; one has insights into how and why government investigations begin and end, so often without bringing about real change, and one may then want, as this reader did, to change the conditions that allows this reverse Robin Hood groove to go on. One has also laughed, repeatedly, as well as groaning and shaking one's head. All in all, not a bad ride, for a paperback novel. We'll be hearing more from Matthew Lee, it's fair to surmise, unless the banks get him first.

Book Description
In this path-breaking new book, the author shows how authority guaranteed both continuity and change in Islamic law. Hallaq demonstrates that it was the construction of the absolutist authority of the school founder, an image which he suggests was actually developed later in history, that maintained the foundations of school methodology and hermeneutics. The defense of that methodology gave rise to an infinite variety of individual legal opinions, ultimately accomodating changes in the law. Thus the author concludes that the mechanisms of change were embedded in the very structure of Islamic law, despite its essentially conservative nature.

10 sci-fi fantasies by Jean "Moebius" Giraud.......2000-04-13
This is volume 4 in Epic Comics' collection of the work of seminal French comix artist Jean Giraud. The title story, together with "Variation #4027 on 'The' Theme" and "Is Man Good?" are included with lesser-known works, all basically "Twilight Zone"- style fantasies with 'ironic' twists. All are somewhat clever, occasionally mildly amusing but not the great artist's best work.

Indo-Aryan Controversy: Evidence and Inference in Indian History
Customer Reviews:
Indian Challenges to White Mythologies: The Aryan Problem.......2007-09-22
I must first state that I am not a member the Hindutva movement, indeed, I denounced the BJP for its sectarian rabble-rousing and Semitization of Hinduism in my The Oneness/Otherness Mystery: The Synthesis of Science and Mysticism (MLBD, 1999)
However, I am associated with a more fundamental Indian challenge to Western thought, attacking Materialist metaphysics after having identified the physical correlate of the yogic Pure Consciousness (Divine Light, cit; Atman, Buddha Nature, al haqq etc.) with the brainwaves of the Reticular Activating System, which supports the Brahmanic view of the ontological primacy of Consciousness. The vast majority of Westerners do not question the fact that Materialist science is based on the Christian myth of Creatio ex nihilo and it is easy to show epistemologically that the "physical world" is never experienced directly, outside consciousness. Furthermore, as J.L. Mehta states in his phenomenology of the Rg Veda, the "Arya" is one who seeks the (Divine) Light.
In 1997 as I finalized the manuscript of O/OM a bookseller showed me a copy of What is Enlightenment magazine featuring a Georg Feuerstein on the front cover (I had never heard of him). Synchronicitously, I found in the shop a copy of Feuerstein, Kak and Frawley's In Search of the Cradle of Civilization (published by the Theosophists) which introduced me to the new ideas about the Harappans being the Vedic Aryans. Their arguments included that the Vedic word for Man "Purusa" came from pur (town/city) dweller and the recently discovered LANDSAT images of the extinct great river in what is now the desert of Rajastan which seems to tie in with the Rg Vedic river Saraswati etc. However, the attempt to deracialise the "Aryans" as merely "nobles" seemed suspect and PC.
As I had written about colonialist distortions of Indian history (as in Inden's "Imagining India etc.) and knew that the self-hating pro-colonialist Indian N.C. Chaudhuri had argued that the Indus civilisation must have been an offshoot of Sumer, these new ideas were very appealing even though I had no problem with Aryans being invaders of India. Indeed, in 1989 on a trip to the USA an American woman asked if I was Iranian as I did not look Indian". I replied that as a brahman, I am an Aryan as are the Iranians, we are a branch of the Indo-Europeans. I was born in Assam where the natives are Thais and tribals and the majority of my fellow Bengalis show non-Aryan S.E. Asian and dark-skinned features.
In 2000 I attended the World Association of Vedic Studies conference in Hoboken where H.H. Hock and Konraad Elst were amongst the speakers on the Aryan Invasion debate. As the only UK-based Indian I was taken aback by the ferocity of the BJP-supporting USA Indians shouting down liberals. I was publicly denounced by one as a "self-hating Hindu" for telling an American that I was not a Hindu in a simple orthodox or henotheist sense but that my scientific and philosophical researches led me to Yoga, Advaita and Nondual Kashmir Saivism etc. in support of my ideas. Like many open-minded scientists, I found that Yogic mysticism contained essential truths about Reality cloaked in mythology (see www.sciencemysticism@zaadz.com). A US Bangladeshi Hindu loudly berated me for questioning his teenage daughter's ferociously sectarian speech about Muslim intolerance in Bangladesh.
In 1998 I read in India Today about the Rajastan "Saraswati" discovery linking it to Rg Veda ("Saraswati do not kick us away, do not force us to migrate to foreign lands"). At the same time I came across Western put-downs of such New Age or Hindu Revisionist "mythology". Even Thomas McEvilley who in The Shape of Western Thought argues powerfully for the Indian Jain origins of Greek philosophia (whose mystical nature is suppressed by Western academia) and transcendental monism, was sceptical of the Vedic Aryans as the Harappans claim. In August 2007, Indophile Michael Wood began his BBC Story of India asserting that a few thousand Aryans invaded from Central Asia. He also completely misrepresented Yoga as thinking and Hinduism as ritual in his effort to glorify his favoured Buddhism (ignoring its roots in Brahmanism) and, whilst focusing on "tolerant" Sufi Islam completely ignored the central role of the Brahmanical Ideology in unifying India's diverse little traditions (the idea of India is largely a Brahmanic one).
Following Wood's advocacy of the Aryan Invasion I searched and found this book and am pleased to see that this debate is clearly not just Hindu mythological revisionism trying to Indianize the Aryans even though Witzel et al. claim it is. As Colin Renfrew said in Archaeology and Language, Linguists and Archaeologists have used each others' tenuous speculations unquestioningly to concoct ever more fanciful speculations posing as "science". The LANDSAT images, the recently discovered submerged cities in the Gulf of Cambay etc. are much harder science than Linguistic theorizing! The Vedic 100-oar boats and fully Aryan (not Sankritized) river names in N.W. Indo-Pak and the archaeological evidence of BMAC cities and post-Harappan towns makes "nomadic Aryans" very suspect! Lars Fosse's critique of simplistic Hindu revisionism and nation-building myths whilst valid, is also revealing in his patronizing view that India is a "wounded civilization" on the brink of social and "economic disaster". Does the phonological hard scientist Fosse think 8-9% growth and the never-so strong sense of Indian national unity is a complete disaster or his he like other Western scholars imagining the India he would like to see!

Customer Reviews:
Definitely best price.......2007-04-02
No idea how it was done, but I got it 75% less price with amazon that with any other vendor, perfect condition, my son loved it, he just goes literally everywhere with them.
Complete covers everything.......2007-03-22
These books cover everything from scientific names to places. It is heavey on bigfoots from around the world and overlaps some on them but all in all a good read if your into the science part of cryptozoology. There are stories in the book about sightings but this is not a pure sightings book it is more about cataloging the cryptids.
Phenomenal 2 Volume Set!.......2004-10-17
Finally! A long overdue authoritative encyclopedia of cryptozoology! This set is awesome! There is so much information here that it'll take a veeery long time to digest it all.
I do have several suggestions though:
1) More photos and illustrations (especially photos and stills from film footage which are discussed, but not shown).
2) Dustjackets. The covers are gorgeous, but how long will they remain so without dustjackets? And at this price, you'd think the publisher could afford it. Which brings me to...
3) The price is outrageous. How can the publisher make any money by limiting it's buyers to libraries, rich people and fools like me? $60 sure, even $75, but $185? Jeez! And even though I paid WAY less than that for my set, it still almost killed by bank account.
Even so, I'm glad I bought it and wouldn't be without it.
A Very Intersting Ecylcopedia.......2004-10-16
I accidently stumbled upon this item while looking for anything on the Paranormal. The Book seemed very intersting and I bought it. The Price was a Killer, but it was worth it. It is set in 2 voulumes which is more like an Encyclopedia, but in the Final Sections of Volume Two mainly is Reference to all the New Species discovered in the 20th Century. Also in the real Final pages, are all Lakes that supposedly have Monsters in them like Lake Erie or Lake Champlain. I would recommend this Book for Reference, but not for reading from Start because like I said, it is more like an Encyclopedia than a Non Fiction Novel.
A collection of animals reported to exist at some point.......2004-09-25
This two-volume set is a basic layman's guide to the weird, wonderful world of unknown animals. These are animals whose existence has not been proven at this time. While the idea that there may be animals, including some very large ones, living in the world and we have no proof of their existence might be strange to some people it was during my lifetime that gorillas and rhinoceroses were removed from the category of fables.
For each entry the editors provide information on its physical description, behavior, distribution, possible explanations, significant sightings, and sources. This is a non-judgmental review of the reports from around the world presented in a typical encyclopedic style. Although it contains primarily creatures reported to exist but not proven it also includes some animals like the Dodo bird, which were known to exist and are believed extinct. But, because there have been occasional reported sightings in recent years these animals are included.
ABC-CLIO, Inc. published some of the best educational materials of this type on the market today. As always Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology is a high quality reference work written at a high-school level and so is accessible to everyone. Mysterious Creatures is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in this area and a recommended purchase for libraries.
