its just like the books by smitten.......2007-03-28

i have read all of richard smittens books about jesse livermore. they are all very much the same. they have identical passages in different order. the trade like jesse livermore i reckon is the best or 2nd best after how to trade in stocks - due to the flow/order. i reckon first read reminiscences of a stock operator and then one of richards smittens books. richards smittens books is also about 60% repititive to reminiscences of a stock operator which i think is okay

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME & MONEY ON THIS BOOK!!!.......2005-06-26

If you thought you would learn the actual methods of how Jesse Livermore traded, you are WRONG.

Gives a quick outline of how Livermore traded, like 'pivotal points' but teaches you NOTHING about how to apply them.

Illustrations are very poor, just a few trend lines which any newbie could have drawn straight out from stockcharts.com

The only moderatesly useful point may have been the emphasis of the 'time stop' where Livermore states that if the stock doesn't react in a few days, get out.

The "Livermore Secret Market Key" was a total scam, once again showing and teaching you NOTHING.

Repeats about 1/4 of the book in the summary by directly cutting and pasting.

If you would like to learn more of Livermore's methods, go read Reminescences of a Stock Operator.
I'd rather have read that one more time than waste my time and money on this book. Huge buyer's remorse!

good book but falls short on explaining the Pivot Trading.......2005-01-07

I mean either Smitten does not get it himself or he just plain does not want you to know....

If you read Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, then you know Livermore's rules. As for the secret trading method (Smitten calls Pivotal Point Trading).... it boils down to trendlines. That is it. The book is so similar to the books of William ONeill I was expecting an IBD subscription card to fall out: 1. Watch the top industry groups for market signals. 2. Watch the top two stocks in each market group. 3. Cut losses at 10% (IBD is 8%). 4. Watch for volume to be up at least 50%. 5. Do not average down. 6. Buy on breakouts to new highs. etc, etc, etc.

Thermodynamics - the Gibbs way.......2001-08-23

Thermodynamics can be a difficult subject to master because it is presented in different ways in different disciplines. For example, the terminology and symbols used by mechanical engineers are often different from those used by physical chemists, and so on. The papers by Gibbs contained in this book, represent the foundation of the thermodynamics of mixtures. These are some of the greatest scientific papers ever written. The papers contain a comprehensive treatment of equilibrium thermodynamics and include more advanced treatments, e.g. strained solids, capillarity, electrical forces, etc.

After reading this book, I realised that much of what has been printed in modern texts often starts out with an approximation but the reader is not told that it is an approximation. This leads to confusion. In the Gibbs work, the reader is always aware of the approximations involved. For example, Gibbs built his themodynamics by starting with the simplest assumtpions, and then successively adding detail. Much of what is reported in modern texts is based on the initial assumption and ignores the later detail. For example, modern texts usually 'gloss-over' the study of capillarity. One would conclude from that treatment that Gibbs perhaps did no work on capillarity. However, on the contrary, Gibbs gave a very comprehensive (and remarkable) treatment of capillarity.

The papers in the book are at times hard to read, because they use follow a strict mathematical logic, and because Gibbs often says " it follows that ...". In many cases, it was not obvious to me how "it followed that ...". Nevertheless, this is a must-read for anyone interested in thermodynamics, and the Gibbs treatment is usually clearer than that given in modern texts.

Thoroughly recommended, and this book is now my prime reference on thermodynamics.

Gibbs's important but obscure masterpiece.......1999-08-21

This is a reprint of his original papers which cement the mathematical foundations of thermodynamics. Gibbs's work is a work of genius, but this book is an extremely challenging read. Writing in viscous 19th century prose, Gibbs is never one to use a sentence where a paragraph will do. Very few non-native English speakers who are experts in thermodynamics have the ability in English to read this from cover-to-cover. The questions one is left asking are 'Has the difficulty of this text slowed the further development of thermodynamics? Would any errors in Gibbs's work be spotted swiftly?' My answers to these questions are 'Yes,' and 'No,' respectively. Anyone who hopes to make advances in the fundamental theory or interpretation of thermodynamics (assuming, contrary to current dogma, that such advances can be made) needs to read the majority of this book.

Great anthology of science writing.......2000-08-27

In his play about Galileo, Bertolt Brecht has him say: "Science knows only one commandment: contribute to science." And those who write about science contribute as much as those who do it-and perhaps more, since a discovery not written up is a discovery that might as well not have occurred.

This is a collection of articles and excerpts representing an overview of science writing, from Herodotus speculating on Egyptian geology to George Smoot analyzing the results from COBE. Some of the writers are primarily popularizers (Isaac Asimov, Rachel Carson, Walter Sullivan) and some are scientists who made an especial effort to write for the public (Arthur S. Eddington, Stephen Jay Gould, Carl Sagan), but some of the pieces are by and for scientists, just sufficiently accessible to be included here (as with the articles by Darwin, Wallace, Kepler, and Helmholtz). The pieces run the gamut of the sciences-astronomy, biology, geology, physics-and a gamut of issues relating to the sciences, from the process of discovery (Mach talking about the human sense of position) to philosophy (Bacon and Popper) to observational notes (Darwin on Galapagos finches and Galileo on his first look through a telescope). There are breathtaking excerpts from the moment when a new science is born: Alfred Russel Wallace realizing the concept of natural selection, Lavoisier explaining the new organization of substances he has discovered (and thereby setting the foundations of modern chemistry).

While reading, I somehow found less interesting than I thought I would, but my problem may be that I have a strong background in the history of science and have been exposed to much of this before. That being said, I am finding that this book is sticking with me in ways that few books do. I continue to think about the articles and recall them.

So for anyone who is interested in science or the history of science, who wants to experience science being made, or who just appreciates good, strong writing, this book is highly recommended.

I use to hate science... but now..........2000-03-22

I now have a new appreciation for Science all because of this book! Reading this was very touching and helped me understand why science is so important to our lives. They even got essay's done by some scientist you have never heard about that are totally irrelevant to what you hear everyday at school, at work, or just walking around. My favorite writings were of Course Galileo's beatiful description of the stars and Jupiter. GREAT BOOK! BUY IT NOW!

A Casebook for Science.......1999-12-23

Bolles has collected an assortment of what he describes as "great" scientific writings. Great in this context refers to writings that, in Bolles' subjective analysis, are among the best scientific literature has to offer. As a result, what appear in this anthology are not always landmark papers that advanced a particular branch of science or introduced a new theory. They are, however, a fascinating collection, dating back to the dawn of science and provide a wonderful sense of perspective on the slow and steady progress of natural philosophy.

Excellent anthology of science writers.......1999-02-26

This is an excellent book! I really enjoyed all the essays by different scientists. It was good to see so many scientists writing clear essays for the "general reader" describing recent advances in their field. The earliest was from Herodotus (444 B.C.), but by far most of the essays were from scientists writing in the 1900's. I have a much better feel and appreciation for the breadth of science after reading this book!
