    Book Description

In the globalized economy, labor migration has become of central importance. A key issue in the analysis of immigration is how the migrants fare in the economy in which they migrate, and how they assimilate towards the behavior of the natives. Using data from the United States, Canada, many European countries, Australia and New Zealand, the chapters study the developments of earnings, employment, unemployment, self-employment, occupational choices and educational attainment after migration. The book also investigates the role of language in labor market integration and examines the situation of illegal, legalized and unwilling migrants. Policy effects are also studied: Among those are the effects of selection criteria of labor market success and the effects immigrants have on the public sector budget of the receiving country. Hence, the book provides a broad picture of the performance of migrants.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14

Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!

      5 out of 5 stars Exellent Book.......2007-05-11

Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.

5 out of 5 stars Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

Every year traditional businesses set aside time for Strategic Planning. If a company has a CEO, her principal job is to foster strategic thinking. If the business community understands the importance of Strategic Planning, why don't lawyers.

Lawyers were never taught to operate businesses and don't take the time to take management coursed to learn how to do this. Using this book as a resouce will help lawyers to understand and implement these concepts.

The book has a great table of contents and is written in a style that can be easily read and understood - no jargon. While it would be best to read the entire book, you can read it on a section by section basis depending on what your particular needs are at any one moment.

Without a Strategic Plan, its unlikely that you will know what tactics you want to use and you won't be very accurate in deciding what your goals will be. This book will eliminate these problems for you.

                    Book Description

The development of physical theory is one of our greatest intellectual achievements. Its products--the currently prevailing theories of physics, astronomy, and cosmology--have proved themselves to possess intrinsic beauty and to have enormous explanatory and predictive power. This anthology of primary readings chronicles the birth and maturation of five such theories (the heliocentric theory, the electromagnetic field theory, special and general relativity, quantum theory, and the big bang theory) in the words of the scientists who brought them to life. It is the first historical account that captures the rich substance of these theories, each of which represents a fascinating story of the interplay of evidence and insight--and of dialogue among great minds.

Readers sit in with Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo as they overturn the geocentric universe; observe the genius of Faraday and Maxwell as they "discover" the electromagnetic field; look over Einstein's shoulder as he works out the details of relativity; listen in as Einstein and Bohr argue for the soul of quantum mechanics in the Completeness Debate; and watch as Hubble and others reveal the history of the universe.

The editors' approach highlights the moments of discovery that rise from scientific creativity, and the presentation humanizes the scientific process, revealing the extent to which great scientists were the first to consider the philosophical implications of their work. But, most significantly, the editors offer this as their central thesis: although each was ushered in by a revolution, and each contains counterintuitive elements that delayed its acceptance, these five theories exhibit a continuous rational development that has led them to a permanent place in the worldview of science.

Accessible to the general reader yet sufficiently substantive that working scientists will find value in it, The Tests of Time offers an intimate look into how physical theory has been developed, by the brilliant people who have developed it.

4 out of 5 stars Good selections of events.......2004-06-07

Nicely done for students of the history of science, and for students of philosophy. The authors have given us several of the crucial nexus points in the development of modern physics. Now, most students know that you should try to peruse the original papers. But there are practical difficulties. Like if these are written in a language that you cannot read. Or if the language is now totally archaic.

So one vital service the authors have performed is to intermediate between us and the source documents. We judiciously get enough of the (translated) source text to hopefully get a feel for the tenor of the debates and the shifting worldviews implicit within these. Supplemented by judicious commentary from the authors.

                    Fiftieth Anniversary Edition
Neruda was a kind of King Midas. Everything he touched turned to poetry, says Gabriel García Márquez, who also considers the Chilean Nobel laureate "the greatest poet of the twentieth century, in any language." [The Fragrance of Guava, 1983]. The Canto General, thought by many of Neruda's most prominent critics to be the poet's masterpiece, is the stunning epic of an entire continent and its people. The Canto speaks of the destiny of Latin American peoples and the life of the poet himself. Without question, this is one of the most important and powerful long poems written in the modern period.

5 out of 5 stars Epic poetic narrative.......2002-08-05

Neruda's Canto General is a poetic retelling of the history of South and Central America from the late pre-Columbian era to the middle of the twentieth century. The book is set up like a novel, with chapters and subheadings, a straight-line narration, and a cast of characters. Neruda's communist ideology is visible throughout the work and is a major theme. Canto General leaves the reader with an interesting impression of American history seen through the eyes of the impoversihed people of South America, as well as an idea of how third-world communists perceive reality. This is truly an excellent work, and should be read by everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the American Bible........2002-06-24

This is one of Neruda's greatest books. It is a jorney through the history of the American Continent, from its creation, to its conquest until the present day. Most readers will know it from its chapter 'Hights of Machu Picchu' but it is certainly more than that.

It is a review of 500 hundred years of history, of war, of love, of betray. Obviously the book is a reflection of Neruda's left wing inclination, but that only adds to the book.

In Chile and other parts of Latin America this book is called "The American Bible" and it truly is. Along with Residencia en la Tierra, it is probably Neruda's finest. And is probably the book in which Neruda became what he though his role as a poet ought to be "a voice for all who had no voice".

If you must read only one book from the Modern Latin American Literature (and this certainly would be a great mistake, if not a crime), then it should be this one. Canto General is a single poem, and yet it is a collection of poems. It is a historical epic, a social analysis, a political pamphlet, and a love sonnet. It is a song of Love and a song of Revolt, a personal song as well as a universal one; a song which whispers tenderly in your ear, and a song that screams against injustice with a loud forceful voice. It is Pablo Neruda's song and it is Chile's song, but it is truly America's song, North and South.

Written in Neruda's lyrical and mellifluous style, Canto General speaks with passion, lucidity, and even premonition of the heavy burden of social injustice and the brutality of tyrannical rule. But it also speaks with overflowing sensuality of love (for women, for the people, for his country). It would be unconscionable not to absorb and understand this book in its social and historical context, yet it would be a great mistake to view it uniquely as a political work of expression.

Read it to understand the Americas. Read it to revel in the beauty of its language. Read it to feel proud and to feel ashamed, to laugh and to cry. Read it in English (good), in Spanish (much better), or even in French (why not?)

I first read Canto General in French at the age of 15. I may since have forgotten some of the words in this book, but its impact and its spirit will probably remain with me for the rest of my life....

5 out of 5 stars Leaving the glory in.......2006-11-27

Imperialists used to say that trade follows the flag. As Walter McDougall shows in 'Let the Sea Make a Noise . . .,' they had it backward. The struggle for hegemony in the North Pacific, which was the last place in the world to have its great power interests sorted out, was created by traders.
And in the end, trade and settlement had at least as much impact on the outcome as military power, maybe more.
Hawaii was discovered by a technician (surveyor and mapmaker) and merchant, Capt. James Cook, sailing in a humble converted collier; while the haughty alii (Hawaiian chiefs) in their elegant war canoes did not discover England.
University of Pennsylvania Professor McDougall, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his history of the space age, lays out a provoking, thoughtful, surprising, opinionated, exciting history of my neck of the woods.
The characters are astounding. In an attempt to grapple with the possible personal motivations behind the public actions, McDougall calls up the shades of some of the most interesting of them, and in interludes -- which he calls by the Hawaiian term `aha iki -- he holds imaginary colloquies with them.
I found this offputting at first but got used to it. It does allow McDougall to lob in comments, many of them politically incorrect, that otherwise would hardly appear in a serious history.
In the third `aha iki, he says of American historiography: 'Now we stress the shame and leave the glory out.'
Refreshingly, McDougall leaves the glory in. The organization of the North Pacific area politically was very much the result of individual efforts of singular personalities. Though he is not treated extensively, Kamehameha the Great was one. There is no reason to think that if he had not lived some other chief would have combined the motivations and skills that he had. (The Hawaii representative in the `aha iki discussions is not Kamehameha but his wife Kaahumanu, who was regent after his death and sponsored the first written law code in the islands -- half the 10 Commandents.)
But though McDougall subscribes to the 'great man' view of history, he tempers it with the environmental or social view. Thus, early in the book he identifies an obscure event that, in his analysis, controlled the destiny of the North Pacific, though that was not stabilized for another 250 years.
The event was the conflict between Russians expanding through Siberia with East Asians in the Amur River valley. The Russians could perhaps have controlled that valley, but they turned away to seek furs in the forests. But the Amur, McDougall says, was the only area within reach of Russian expansionists in East Asia that could have produced enough grain to sustain a successful Russian settlement of the North Pacific Rim.
Thus, although the small bands of Russians managed much later to establish toeholds in Hawaii and California, they were not numerous enough to sustain themselves. Their supply line was too fragile.
'Tragic,' comments McDougall, 'if you are Russian, for the brave efforts still to come had already been rendered vain -- in 1689 -- at Nerchinsk.'
Hawaii, naturally, plays an important role in this long story. As for the outcome of the struggle for hegemony, after all the adventures and stress, McDougall settles for realpolitik as the explanation:
'In sum, control of Hawaii meant absolute security for the eastern Pacific (for America), whereas foreign control of it meant substantial insecurity.' The legalities of annexation do not, in this view, count for much.
But the reason for spending 700 pages with Walter McDougall is not just that he has a lot of interesting tales to tell. The virtue of 'Let the Sea Make a Noise . . . ' is that he lets almost all the conflicting emotions and desires of the four centuries have their moments.
The ambiguity of the situation is always acknowledged. 'The whites on the Pacific shore,' he says, 'have always been paranoid, as if they knew they were interlopers.'
At the same time, McDougall writes, 'To me, the Pacific Ocean still suggests cleanliness, sweetness and strangeness.'
Few of the dozens of tales in this book are clean or sweet, but they are all strange.

4 out of 5 stars Waves of details and facts tempered with speculation.......2004-01-16

"Let the Sea Make a Noise" forges historical scholarship with insightful notions about the realms encompassing the north Pacific ocean. The author, Walter A. McDougall, spent untold hours researching and organizing minutia then interweaving vast history replete with sensory details; human and political failings, dreams, and successes; meteorological and geographic facts; and overlooked, obscure bits of history.

Consequently, the book itself is somewhat overwhelming for it is nearly impossible to absorb this level of detail or maintain a clear understanding of the myriad relationships and ideologies.

Of course, having too much detail is better than not enough in any book of this sort, and Mr. McDougall is never shy about throwing in what may be a touch of conjecture. One cannot really know what some of the many people profiled here might have been thinking, but ultimately the scope of the book prevails, and one must admire the tenacity and effort funneled in to this book.

Be prepared to invest some time reading this history but be forewarned that you may have to put the book down from time to time to let the facts and information swamp you like a big wave.

5 out of 5 stars An extremely original, creative, and thought-provoking book!.......1999-01-26

McDougall's book is excellent. I am a graduate student in Russian history who read this book for the first time while in between my master's and doctoral programs, and it was extremely influential in shaping the subsequent course of my program. I had long been fascinated by the fact that Russia is the only "European" nation that is also part of the Pacific Rim and once ruled Alaska. McDougall considers both these developments in due course, while fitting them into the larger context of the history of the North Pacific as a coherent region. He writes history in episodic chapters that give the book a sort of novelistic feel, complete with cliffhangers. Yet the book is not "dumbed-down" for a general audience. While not exactly scholarly (there are no footnotes, for example), it is obviously well-researched and presents many general questions for further consideration (or research). The book has the merit of focusing on the common history of regions not always thought of as connected: China, Japan, & Korea, Russia, the North American West, and Hawaii. It was a pleasure to read and inspired me greatly. It was enough to motivate me both to begin to study Chinese lanuage and take a year-long survey course on Japanese history. I cannot recommend McDougall's book highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars Solid history you can't put down.......1998-03-04

I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend. Since then, I have read it three times...and I almost never read history. McDougall has a knack for combining storytelling with history, so that general trends in the lands surrounding the Pacific are illustrated with fascinating stories about the people involved. This format is so effective that I found that after the first reading, I actually remembered all the salient features of McDougall's book (and probably bored my friends by sharing my exciting new knowledge with them on a road trip). His illustrative anecdotes combine with his knowledge of history to show you why people's actions made sense to them at the time. For example, why didn't the Russians consolidate their holdings in East Asia and Alaska? In hindsight, it looks crazy, but with McDougall and the characters (like Count Witte) that he brings to life, you understand and sympathize. McDougall's book contains a certain amount of subtle U.S. nationalism, tempered by criticism of stupid American policies, past and present. It is not jingoistic, but rather cognizant of the fact that of all the governments jockeying around the Pacific, the U.S. was about the most enlightened. So if you ever wanted to know why a relatively advanced island nation like Japan never really opened up to the world, why British Columbia almost became part of the U.S., how close Russia came to owning the West Coast down to California (they built a fort there, once), or how the U.S. got the whole Louisiana purchase when they really wanted New Orleans, read this book. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars The story of how the whole world was impacted by one ocean.......1997-09-28

This is a must read for any serious history advocate. In simple English, you learn why Japan and China don't own land in the US, why Russia failed here, and why Hawaii isn't british, french or Roman catholic. What happened in Europe, Russia and the US from the 1600's to present times is tied to what happened in the northern pacific. It's a world-wide lesson in riveting doses of prose and fiction that will make you read all night

4 out of 5 stars Least remembered most triumpant lunar landing mission.......2006-10-28

This Apogee Book/DVD combination is another great choice for the Apollo collector, especially at nearly 10 bucks off the list price. The DVD alone is worth the price! I agree with the other reviewer, Apogee should produce similar DVDs to go with all Apollo Mission Reports.

The only nitpick on the one I received of Apollo 12 - Volume II, was due to some adhesive residue that smeared on the outer surface of the DVD from where it is attached to the back inside cover of the book. However, a mild disc cleaning before first use, and I was able to play the video without problem.

One of the more unusual segments on the DVD is the KC-135's 1/6th gravity dress rehearsals with both Pete Conrad and Al Bean in their moon walking pressure suits. Some of that footage was actually quite comical when an astronaut fell over on his back - like a turtle - and appeared to be stuck. These are the kinds of things that make landing on the Moon and walking around seem so incredible, that some conspiracy theorists say it never ever happened. Well, if it was a hoax those poor astronauts sure had to go through a helleva training regime for nothing more than show.

I for one believe the Apollo missions were REAL and so were all of the moon walkers. In the astronauts' KC-135 escapades, you can appreciate more of what they went through up there as there are a variety of activities and details revealed inside an airplane simulation of 1/6-G that would otherwise be very difficult to make out during any of the TV broadcasts of Apollo EVAs. Pete Conrad even makes passing reference to the "1/6th G airplane simulation" during his first actual EVA on the Moon. This and much enthused voice communications between Pete and AL can be clearly heard thanks to audio sound track on the DVD.

As others have said, Apollo 12 was sorely lacking on TV coverage (albeit, color for this flight as opposed to B&W on Apollo 11) as well as rather spotty 16mm color film recordings of the mission. There is no coverage of any kind of Conrad and Bean's 2nd EVA, unfortunately, because it was the EVA with their most extensive exploration (on foot) away from the LM.

As had been carefully planned, Apollo 12 landed next to, and very close to the rim of a fairly sizeable crater, where an unmanned probe, Surveyor-III landed a couple years prior. Unfortunately, this large crater, and the old Surveyor probe could not be seen through LMP's window. This was the vantage point where the best film quality could be taken both during and after the landing, but after landing, the LM was facing away from the crater so it could not be viewed from the window. To make matters worse, the portable TV camera failed shortly in to the first EVA, before anything could be seen from it, other than where the astronauts came down the LM ladder.

There is a famous (still) photograph of one of the astronauts standing next to derrilic probe where it landed inside Surveyor crater, with the LM high up on the side of the rim clearly visible in the background, only about 600 feet away. It is really a shame the astronauts' secret plan to get a similar photo with both in the same picture was foiled by an elusive camera timer attachment device temporarily misplaced in the moon rock collection bag.

Apollo 12 seems to be one of the early missions that most people do not remember. 12 came after 11, and before 13, but those missions EVERYBODY remembers; the latter essentially a failure turned rescue mission overly dramatized by the media with nothing to further our knowledge of Lunar geology. The first landing of Apollo 11 played to a worldwide TV audience of hundreds of millions on Earth, but the B&W TV coverage was generally quite horrible in picture quality.

Apollo 14 took the place of the aborted mission of 13 exploring the Fra Mauro highlands, but somehow missed the prize of locating the nearby rim of Cone Crater, and thereby missing yet another fantastic lunar feature to have recorded on film. Then, there were the Lunar Rover enhanced, vastly extended lunar explorations of Apollo 15, 16 and 17 from July 1971 through December 1972, but sadly, there were to be no more mission after the spectacular success (and contributions to our scientific knowledge) of Apollo 17. Apollo Saturn spacecrafts were already bought and paid for, to have flown at least three additional missions, but taxpayers lost interest and the political will responded in kind. What a pity.

There are Apogee Mission Reports (some such as 11 and 12 in multiple volumes with DVDs) that are of long since past historical events, but all make for fascinating reading of what was accomplished and technologically possible more than 30 years ago. I yearn for what may be yet to come, whether it be new explorations of the Moon, or the first manned mission to Mars. I only hope to live long enough to be a part of it.

Apogee Books continues to add to the wealth of information that they have produced with their Apollo Series. Enough cannot be said as to the value of the reference material that they have packaged. For those of us that have interests in the flights besides Apollo 11, these books, and the Apollo 12 Volume 2 in particular, gives us access to information that if not previously unabtainable, required much effort and resources to obtain. I was particularly impressed with the real time landing footage merged with the audio transmissions - probably the first time it has been seen since it originally occured. I highly recommend this book and the series in general.

4 out of 5 stars OK as a reference of a great mission... but DVD is lacking.........2005-06-20

Like the other entries in the Apogee Space Books series, this Apollo 12 volume serves as a good reference. The book contains the mission report compiled after the mission ended and is a great reference.

As for the DVD, I was expecting both lunar EVAs, the other TV broadcasts, and material that covered more of the mission in terms of preparation. Also there is not very much audio on the DVD at all. Much more comprehensive material is available elsewhere (primarily from Spacecraft Films) which has a 3-DVD set on the mission (and others). The earlier reviewer should check out the series if they are looking for comprehensive DVDs of the footage from Apollo (and other U.S. space broadcasts and materials).

                        5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2005-05-14

Robert Godwin and Apogee Books have, over the past six years, compiled a variety NASA documents, press kits, crew interviews and the like, which recount the early days of the space race, focusing on the Apollo missions. This time, they have released a second volume of information dedicated in the second lunar landing, Apollo 12, which includes a DVD of the lunar EVA and an excellent companion NASA publication. Apollo 12 was the only the second manned lunar landing. This mission was commanded by Charles "Pete" Conrad who was accompanied to the surface by Alan Bean with Dick Gordon as the Command Module pilot.

Regardless of whether or not you were alive to see the moon landings live on TV, you definitely can relive the excitement of that wondrous time by watching this two-sided DVD. The DVD covers all phases of the mission as well as training footage onboard the KC-135 affectionately known as the "Vomit Comet." The DVD has many hours of footage, with sound, related to launch, lunar landing, lunar EVA, recovery, splashdown, rendezvous, onboard TV, assembled panoramas, and 16 mm camera footage. The quality of the footage is not that great, but it is a good as it was when in was first broadcast in 1969.

The book that accompanies the DVD is a reprint of the Apollo 12 Mission Report prepared by the Mission Evaluation Team from the Manned Spaceflight Center in Houston. This report is essentially the scientific and engineering evaluation of the flight, so there is very little about the scientific findings and exploration. This lengthy report is 190 pages long and covers all aspects of the mission, from liftoff, lunar landing, the moonwalk, the experiments, and the return to Earth. In these pages, there are figures that show a comparison between a predicted value and an actual flight value (how much was used vs. how much was estimated). It also contains two fairly long sections, which describes both the Command and Service Module and the Lunar Module. The report also contains, many black and white photographs, line drawing and several technical graphs. While some readers may the report's writing a bit dry in some places, they are actually getting a view of how NASA operates and why their exploration programs for the most part are quite successful.

Some general information that might be useful.

                        1) This report is a scanned-in documents from a previously released NASA document. In order to preserve the spirit of the original reports, all typographical and grammatical errors have NOT been fixed.

                        2) Proceeds from the book goes to "The Watch" an asteroid impact research project of the Space Frontier Foundation. In other words, Apogee Books is making very little off the sale of US government produced books and documents.

                        3) Many people have asked why the post mission science reports are not included. Since NASA has published several books with hundred of pages each, the NASA Special Publications Series, it would be difficult to include this voluminous amount of data.

                        5 out of 5 stars Apollo 12: a great book.......2005-03-24

I was really impressed by the Apollo 12 - Volume 2, and all its DVD content.
The post-flight report is quite interesting, especially where it addresses activities conducted on and around the Surveyor 3 robot, which had landed on the moon a couple of years earlier.
Besides, it was great to see the original NASA broadcast feed of the launch and other mission highlights. After more than 35, years we finally get a chance to see the original broadcast video and to hear the original soundtrack. Moreover, the B/W video sequences give today's spectators a taste of how things were done and felt in 1969.
The addition of 35 or 16 mm color film does not add much to the launch sequences. We have seen those for decades...
It would be great if Apogee did the same job for other (or all) missions. I don't think anybody has ever marketed NASA broadcast video of Apollo launches and/or splash-downs. That would be a perfect niche for Apogee Books to fill.
Overall, the entire written science report about activities conducted on the moon, plus the human side of the story (captured by the video) make this volume an A+ collector item.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Complilation of Apollo 12 Mission Material.......2006-08-29

Robert Godwin and Apogee Books have over the years compiled a variety NASA documents, press kits, crew interviews and the like, which recount the early days of the space race, focusing on the Apollo missions. This time, they have released the first volume of information dedicated in the second lunar landing, Apollo 12, which followed the first lunar landing conducted by Apollo 11. This mission was commanded by Charles "Pete" Conrad who was accompanied to the surface by Alan Bean with Dick Gordon as the Command Module pilot.

The book opens with the usual NASA mission press kit which provides a general, but descriptive overview of the mission. The next portions of the book contain the pre- and post-flight operations reports. The pre-flight report, an in-house NASA report, describes the planned activities of the mission, while the post-flight operations report, another NASA in-house report, documents the actual events and describes any discrepancies between the planned and actual activities.

The final section, the debrief section, which is over 100 pages, contains the crew comments and feelings about various parts of the mission and contains a fair amount of the technical language and acronyms that many NASA documents include. The crew debrief contains crew comments from the suiting up phase to the landing, plus comments about the training (was it adequate). In this section there are numerous pages devoted to the precision landing made by the crew, the investigation of the Surveyor III lunar lander and the two moonwalks. I always find the crew debriefing quite enjoyable, because it is the closest thing to being there.

The book also includes a CD which features a 30th anniversary interview with Command Module Pilot Captain Richard "Dick" Gordon and the NASA produced "Pinpoint For Science" and the entire EVA television transmissions. In addition, the CD includes the in flight press conference, five Quicktime panoramas of the landing site and over 2100 still black and white and color photographs.

Some general information that might be useful.

This has just about everything associated with the preparation and chronology of the Apollo 12 mission- crew bios, debriefings, diagrams etc. As great as all that is, it lacks analysis of the mission itself, and its importance in the history human space exploration. So, its more like a press kit. the details with and the CD with photos are EXTREMELY valuble, although almost all of the information (including photos- most with better resolution) can be found on the WWW. Such is progress.

4 out of 5 stars Another volume in this valuable series.......2001-02-23

Yet another volume in this valuable series. Apollo 12 advanced on the first moon landing mostly by doing more: more geology (including two moonwalks instead of one), a pinpoint landing (within walking distance of Surveyor III), and more surveying for possible future sites. The major excitement was the Saturn V being struck by lightning shortly after liftoff, or, as the official report included in this volume euphemistically puts it, "an electrical potential discharge from the clouds through the space vehicle to the ground." That and the loss of the television camera early in the first EVA, which I think contributed significantly to the loss of interest back home.

The contents are by now just about standard: the press kit, the pre-mission report, the post-mission report, and the crew debriefing. I was glad to see the return of the latter after missing it on Apollo 9. (It's not in volume 1 of the Apollo 11 coverage, but I assume it's in volume 2.) That was a bit more jargon-filled than usual but still worthwhile to skim. Another one for the completist.
