Book Description

n hopes of curing his business woes, Charro Machorro-windshield washer, roadside vendor, and free-market enthusiast-pays a visit to a faith healer in the Arizona desert and learns more than he bargained for about how the free market really works. To increase his profits, the healer suggests, he should establish his company during the Middle Ages, gain a monopoly, exploit natural resources, break up unions (though currently he's the only employee), and, of course, become a multinational corporation. The healer's $20,000 fee shows that she, at least, knows how to manage her own little business. In a single, hilarious rush, cartoonist Rafael Barajas, aka El Fisgn ('the peeper'), takes us from the dawn of capitalism to the age of global conglomerates, showing how the world economy developed and how it functions today. Amid the laughs, he offers a critique of a planet in which the few 'globalize' to their endless benefit, while everyone else suffers poverty, famine, migration, and war. El Fisgn's graphically stunning, visually sophisticated book, filled with allusions to the history of art and cartooning, cleverly reverses every self-help manual for playing the market, teaching us not how to become rich but rather why so many remain poor.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Comical look at Globalization.......2007-02-19

I really enjoyed this book. Fisgon uses comic panels to illustrate the ups and downs of globalization while also provided a very intelligent researched history into it. The book may drone every now and then but it is worth it for the point he is trying to make.

5 out of 5 stars Clever .......2005-10-16

Sometimes I question if some of the reviewers on Amazon have actually read the material they're reviewing. Since there only seems to be two reviews for this book, and since I have read the book twice, I can vouch for their praise. The author, whose name means "The Peeper" in English, is both well skilled in drawing, as well as very educated in social maters. Seeing first-hand what our decade old NAFTA did to his country of Mexico, he decided to enlighten the rest of the world by means of humor.
The book starts with a business man named Charro Machorro crawling through the burning sands of the Sonoran Desert. Why? Well it's not for water, shade or anything reasonable in that environment. Instead he is looking for The Carrera Clinic, famous for its financial sorceress, career consultant and `faith healer'. Keep that last one in mind will reading the book, you'll be in for a comical surprise. Charro's purpose for visiting her is to find out how to be successful in business. Although the book does answer that question, it is anything but the usual sap you see in the bookstores. To sum it up, this is a clever book; read it.

4 out of 5 stars Brief but comprehensive. .......2005-02-17

A poor Mexican businessman crosses the Sonoran Desert into United States in search of the career guidance that will show him the way to financial success. He meets a "Career Consultant" who teaches him the history of business and introduces him (and us readers) to the world of colonialism, subsidies, globalization, neoliberalism, the free market, and war. This book tackles some very serious issues in an easy-to-read, and wonderfully illustrated format. It is a great introduction to anyone who is struggling to make sense of the complex world of globalization. A clever ending.

5 out of 5 stars A View From the Other Side of the Fence.......2004-06-24

For any American who is curious about how the rest of the world views the political and economic leadership in the US, this book is a great place to start. Both clever and funny, El Fisgòn presents an overview of the history of Capitalism as viewed by those who have benefited from it the least. Economists, surely, would dismiss his views. The poor and the thoughtful, though, even in the US, will sense the truth in it.

If you've asked yourself, "Why do they hate us so much?" then this book is for you!

If you're involved in or sympathetic to the labor movement, then this book is for you!

If you want to understand the worldwide protest against recent US government policy, even from our allies, then this book is for you!

If you're confused or curious about the results of globalization and free trade and how they work, then this book is for you!

Challenge yourself! Read this book!

      ASIN: 027598186X

      Book Description

The proverbial American dream of owning a home has become an all-too-real nightmare for a growing number of families. The most vulnerable segments of our society--including minorities, the elderly, and working families--are being victimized by financiers who lure them into commitments they cannot fulfill. Collectively known as "predatory lending," these practices include offering higher interest rates than can be justified by the risk, high pre-payment penalties that lock families into exploitative loans, and monstrous balloon payments that often result in default and the loss of the home. The net result can be disastrous: damage to one's credit rating, bankruptcy, and even the loss of lifelong savings. Why the Poor Pay More is an incisive exposure of these practices: how they have evolved, why they have become so prevalent in recent years, and how their negative effects can be quantified. It features in-depth analysis from prominent scholars, legal experts, and community leaders, who shed new light on the social, political, and economic consequences of predatory lending. Why the Poor Pay More is much more than an indictment of these insidious discriminatory practices. It is a call to arms for anyone concerned about how the financial-political system can be corrupted to serve the needs of the wealthy. Highlighting community initiatives already underway to combat predatory lending and an extensive listing of practical resources, Why the Poor Pay More outlines active roles that individuals, advocacy groups, financial and legal service providers, and policymakers can play in reversing this destructive trend.

          Description:
The political salience of demands from minority and regional groups for greater language rights increases across Europe. To draw more geographical attention to a particular aspect of these developments, this article identifies the main generic problems of converting demands for 'linguistic rights' into applied language policies. It does this by first outlining how the historic process of nation-state building in Europe reduced linguistic diversity, but has not eliminated language demands emanating from regional minorities. It then analyses how the concept of 'linguistic rights', as a part of human rights in general, has been developing within the United Nations and bodies including the Council of Europe and the European Union. Having outlined the political-legal frameworks within which minority language rights are pursued, the article then discusses the major difficulties of putting them into practice in particular places and spaces. They can be summarised as: the weakness of relevant international agreements; the dominance of state sovereignty in determining language policies; the limited public support for minority language rights; the difficulties of defining minority languages and delimiting the geographical spaces they occupy; the challenges posed by the growing geographical mobility of populations; and the problem of balancing collective and individual rights. Two fundamental issues linking these different problems are identified. First, there are problems of definition: what constitutes a 'minority' or 'regional' language and within what geographical space(s) is such a language spoken? This spatial dimension underlies a second fundamental problem, namely that of resolving conflicts between individual personality rights and collective territorial rights in increasing hybrid geolinguistic situations created by the growing geographical mobility of populations. Sociolinguists study these issues, but usually treat these essential spatial dimensions in a superficial fashion. Thus, there is an opportunity for geographers to develop more sophisticated geolinguistic analyses as a contribution to this interdisciplinary field.

                        Book Description

Electromagnetic surface modes are present at all surfaces and interfaces between material of different dielectric properties. These modes have very important effects on numerous physical quantities: adhesion, capillary force, step formation and crystal growth, the Casimir effect etc. They cause surface tension and wetting and they give rise to forces which are important e.g. for the stability of colloids.
This book is a useful and elegant approach to the topic, showing how the concept of electromagnetic modes can be developed as a unifying theme for a range of condensed matter physics. The author concentrates in finding out the basic origin of the force and how they are developed from the collective excitations of the solids. Different materials are treated, e.g. metals, semiconductors, plasmas, liquids and gases all with different collective modes. In close relation to the theoretical background, the reader is served with a broad field of applications. The book serves readers who are concerned with applications to real world problems with a deep knowledge on surface modes, and inspires new developments of the field.

                                Book Description

This unique book challenges the traditional distinction between eros, the love found in Greek thought, and agape, the love characteristic of Christianity. Focusing on a number of classic texts, including Plato's Symposium and Lysis, Aristotle's Ethics and Metaphysics,, and famous passages in
Gregory of Nyssa, Origen, Dionysius the Areopagite, Plotinus, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas, the author shows that Plato's account of eros is not founded on self-interest. Did you know that until 1823 suicides were buried at crossroads to prevent them returning to haunt the living? Or that until the Contagious Diseases Act was repealed in 1886, women in naval ports who were suspected of prostitution could be medically examined by force? Most families have a skeleton. You may have already discovered yours via the grapevine or your own research. Or you may simply be intrigued by the dark side of our past. This popular history explores the behaviour of our disreputable ancestors from the unfortunate to the criminal, and introduces a host of colourful characters including 17th century witches, 18th century 'mollies' and Victorian baby farmers. Thematically arranged by skeleton, the text also describes how society punished and provided for its 'offenders' - as well as the changing attitudes that could ultimately bring acceptance. The story of the Sioux leader Crow Dog. It also talks about his family and previous generations, as well as children. He has a co-writer to get all this down. This isn't too bad, and a reasonably interesting account if you are interested in that sort of history and such books as Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.

Interesting contemporary information (i.e. 1950s on). Tells of Indian's on-going plight in poverty, alcoholism, disease and lack of employment and the feelings this engenders in them. Valuable history of past Holy Men (and women) and their values.
Since I am very interested in Indian studies, both past and present, I enjoyed this book.

Crow Dog is one of the best Native American books I've ever read. It is culturally rich and speaks clearly on the injustices done to the Native Americans. It talks not only about the injustices of the past but also the future, like the siege of Wounded Knee. Also this is one of the richest stories which covers the legacy of the Crow Dogs.

One of the reasons this book is so affluent is its personal feel. The author, Leonard Crow Dog, can't write and so he spoke the entire book to an interpreter. This gives the entire book a slow but fluent feel which shadows the way many Native Americans talk, and so the book feels, sometimes, like a story. It makes you feel you are there in every event, and you are connected with the book in an uncanny way.

This book goes in-depth in the religious aspects of Native Americans. The Crow Dog family has always been in the root of Lakota medicine men, and they are responsible for the continued practice of, and the creation of some, Native American rituals. Leonard Crow Dog, the author, was the first to bring back the banded Ghost Dance since the death of his Great-Grand Father. It happened at one of the most important sites in Native American history, Wounded Knee. However, this wouldn't be the last time Leonard Crow Dog would become history at Wounded Knee.

The siege of Wounded Knee, which lasted seventy-two days, is one of the most intense events of the book. In that short time a band of Native Americans, from a rainbow of tribes, raised an independent nation, defended that nation, and fell to an enemy whom had, or maybe more has, no sense of a kept word. The siege of Wounded Knee wasn't actually a siege because the land was a part of a treaty which said it'd be Native American land, but naturally the white man didn't keep their word. It's been more than a decade since the last battle at Wounded Knee and it has been erased from most people's memory.

Crow Dog seems to be more than just a book about the legacy of the Crow Dog family. It seems to be a story about the prevailing struggle that Native American have every day to keep hold of their identity, and to keep hold of their sanity as they are encircled everyday by people how've stolen their home. The important part of the book is not the continued signing and break of agreements with Native Americans, but their spirit to stand resolved and stand with the divine father.

Kevin Randle, a special investigator for the Center for UFO Studies, is considered one of the foremost experts in the field. Evaluating recent examinations of popular current and classic cases such as the alien autopsy footage, the Gulf Breeze UFO photographs, and the Roswell UFO crash, Randle addresses the present state of UFO investigation. With a surprisingly impartial, no-nonsense approach, The Randle Report avoids the popular sensationalism common in today's UFO literature. Randle concludes that the field of UFO studies is evolving, and encourages this change in direction from documentation to investigation.

This is the sort of book that will give both pro-government ufo sceptics and passionate alien abduction groupies a hard time.

Good to see that under meticulous research, wild alien stories do crackle just as much as those weather-ballon-self-induced-hallucination- mentally-deranged-pathologic-liars type of explanation that is given by the authorities.

All in all, if you want a book that gives you a comprehensive and balanced overview of the whole issue, this is the one to start with.

The topic will put a strain on your wallet, however: Since new previously classified documents pop up every few months, one has to buy the latest on the same stuff year after year. I see a future for the e-book here: You should be able to check with the author's website every few months to download an update.... :-)

                                            Book Description

This volume, the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Genetics in Aquaculture, builds on the foundations laid down at the first symposium, held in Galway, Ireland in 1982 (Aquaculture, Volume 33), as well as those laid down at the second, held in Davis, California, USA in 1985 (Genetics in Aquaculture II), and the third, held in Trondheim, Norway in 1988 (Genetics in Aquaculture III). It addresses specific problems and developments in this field, demonstrating the tremendous breadth of research activity as well as the complexity of issues in aquaculture genetics. This book will be of great value to aquaculturists, fisheries scientists and marine biologists.

(The above-mentioned proceedings of the first three conferences are still available).

                                              Book Description

Marine technology is experiencing rapid change, particularly in the areas of ship design, building and operation. New technologies not only have to be developed but also rapidly incorporated and put into use in order for all organisations involved to remain competitive.

Containing papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Marine Technology, this volume reviews both traditional and improved techniques in many different areas including: Navigation and Ship Operation; Shipbuilding and Design; Materials and Fabrication in Shipbuilding; Ship Propulsion, Equipment and Automation; Management Aspects; Reliability and Safety in Marine Technology; and Deep Sea Systems and Vehicles. Over 40 contributions from specialists working in many different countries are featured.
