Informative and engrossing.......2000-02-21

I found this book to be helpful as it provided much new information in areas that have not been fully explored in recent works. Buchanan showed that Deaf adults actively defended American Sign Language during the very decades (1900-1950) when "Oralism" was the official policy in most schools. He also shows that this tradition of self-activity extended into employment where Deaf adults worked individually and collectively to challenge discriminatory employers many decades before the Americans with Disabilities Act. Finally, Illusions is helpful as it provides an honest and empathic portrait of the Deaf Community that considers frailties and divisions as well as its extraordinary history of determined self-activity.

Doesn't Do The Job.......2007-06-26

The book doesn't live up to the title...in the chapter on forecasting he states, that it can't be done. I think what he meant to say was, he doesn't know how to forecast the price of precious metals. I sent my copy back.

rational advice.......2007-03-17

A major motivation for the writing of this book is the run up in prices of gold, silver and platinum during this decade. So when I started reading this book, I expected some shrill hyping. Because in the last 25 years or so, the niche of precious metals has been about the worst performing sector in the US, considered over all mainstream investment classes.

Yet, against most of my expectations, Gotthelf offers fairly sober advice. He does point out that from 1972 to 2004, the silver price equilibrates around $5/ounce. And that, for example, a bull market in silver tends to be short lived; around 1 year. All this adds to a cautionary approach. Don't think that silver prices can keep rising indefinitely. Be a cynical bull.

He also analyses gold. For both, hedging advice is proferred. Along with writing of covered calls against any bullion that you own outright. And he cites examples of past frauds in the field of holding bullion. Keep your wits about you.

The book by B.N.J. Persson has a unique position in the field of tribology. It manages to bridge naturally many length scales phenomena into a single comprehensive frame work, from macroscopic mechanics of friction and wear down to atomic level. The book gives an excellent overview of current state of scientific knowledge, and it is very useful both for beginners in the field and experts. As a Ph.D student, the book helped me to get familiar and interested in the field, and it is still a major reference for many of the things I do.

Many different mechanisms can give rise to energy dissipation is sliding friction, depending on whether you are dealing with dry friction, boundary lubrication, hydrodynamic lubrication, or maybe electronic friction. In Bo Persson's book the physical models that capture the essential mechanisms of each regime are clearly described. At the same time, the reader learns about many recent (as well as classical) experiments in the field, including a broad list of references . I recommend the book to both graduate students and anybody who is working in the field or interested in the physical mechanisms of sliding friction.

Understanding friction.......2000-09-25

This book is an excellent introduction to the physics of sliding friction. It puts an emphasis on the microscopic mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of friction. Everything is explained in a very clear way. Mathematics is kept to a minimum and only used to clarify things. The book also covers, in contrast to traditional books on tribology, topics like the friction on superconductors. I can recommend this book to both experienced scientists and graduate students who are interested in the physics of friction. I am sure you will enjoy reading it. Have fun!

Brooke's The History of Emily Montague (1769) was the first work of fiction to be set in Canada, and also the first book to reflect on the situation of the woman writer there. Her analysis of the experience of writing in Canada is continued by the five other writers considered in this study - Susanna Moodie, Sara Jeannette Duncan, L.M. Montgomery, Margaret Atwood and Carol Shields. All of these authors examine the social position of the woman of letters in Canada, the intellectual stimulation available to her, the literary possibilities of Canadian subject-matter, and the practical aspects of reading, writing, and publishing in a (post)colonial country.
