It will become established as a standard reference book - the first of its kind - providing an authoritative account of the rapidly growing field of labor market policy in a coherent and systematic framework. A group of internationally renowned researchers provides a state-of-the-art account of research on three levels: an evaluation of the methods available, an evaluation of policies and policy regimes,nd an evaluation of institutional frameworks and monitoring systems. Unique features of this reference book include the presentation of a 'Target-Oriented Approach' to evaluating labor market policy. The Handbook is international in its approach - all chapters apply an international comparative framework in assessing contemporary developments in the field. International Handbook of Labour Market Policy and Evaluation will be an indispensable source of reference for policy makers, social scientists and academics interested in labor market policy and policy evaluation.

The clarity and simplicty of this approach will be useful to all board members.
Customer Reviews:
Non-profits: Rethinking Our Use of Money.......2000-12-13
All of us in the nonprofit world worry about money. It seems we're constantly trying to balance our finances and our mission. "It's simple! : money matters for the nonprofit board member" is a powerful tool for aligning our two "bottom lines", fiscal solvency and mission. An easy read, this book is packed with helpful suggestions and novel ideas useful not just to any nonprofit board member but to anyone interested in helping nonprofit organizations realize their potential. I can personally attest to the value of the information. We employed the innovative approaches outlined in "It's simple! : money matters for the nonprofit board member" to successfully secure capital funds for the construction of a state-of-the art marine education facility which enabled us to expand our programs. Without the information you'll find in this volume, we'd still be "Sitting by the dock of the Bay, watching the tides roll away" rather than riding those moving waters to achieve our mission of educating people about the world of water. I recommend this book highly.

Book Description
A surprising look at America's search for certainty by a leading anthropologist and cultural critic. The rebirth of fundamentalist thinking in the rapidly changing world is a striking feature of our time. Vincent Crapanzano, one of the country's leading anthropologists, has written an extraordinary book examining the prevalence of fundamentalism and literalism and the unexpected forms they take in modern America, in both religious and secular life. An expert on North and South Africa, Crapanzano could have taken the cliched approach of seeking to understand the fundamentalist impulse in the context of Islam. Instead, he takes the more challenging--and fresher--route of looking at our own society. In a work that moves from wealthy Angelenos who embrace starkly literal readings of the Bible to Supreme Court Justice Scalia insisting on the narrowest interpretation of legal texts, Crapanzano makes a persuasive claim that the attraction to literal certainty that we associate with fringe fanaticism is in fact deeply embedded in American culture. Crapanzano's earlier works have been hailed as "brilliant" (Guardian), "deeply involving" (Publishers Weekly), and "utterly convincing" (Sunday Times). Like works including Christopher Lasch's The Culture of Narcissism, this new book poses basic questions about the state of America's mind and soul.

The history of the meat industry in America........2000-08-17
Skaggs's book is an excellent synthesis of the history of American meat production from earliest times to the present. Skaggs covers the early days, the rise of the trailing industry, the growth of big packing towns like Chicago and Kansas City, scandals like "embalmed beef" in the war with Spain and the "beef trust", and all the twists and turns that have led to the way things are produced today. Full of interesting facts and details, this book also tells the story of the lifecycle of an important American industry that still looms large in our imaginations. As Skaggs shows, however, imagination tends to run away from reality. For all you romantics out there, just remember that even at the height of the cattle trail days, most cattle were raised by farmers. (I bet you won't be seeing that coming out of Hollywood anytime soon.) I highly recommend reading this book in conjunction with Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle".

Customer Reviews:
A simple and much enough contents for everyone.......2001-04-24
Membrane proteins have many typical characters that are very different from other water-soluble proteins. You can learn almost about topics of the membrane protein simply. This book is constructed with two big chapters and first chapter gives explanations about general strategies and techniques about purification (choice of protein sources, solubilization techniques, etc.), chromatography (hydroxylapatite, ion-exchange, chromatofocusing, metal chelate, affinity, covalent, hydrophobic, gel filtration, etc.) and electrophoresis(denaturing, native gel). In second chapter, several examples of membrane proteins were reported. Each purification procedures were detailed and you will be able to understand step by step. This book covers totally about practical membrane protein science and will be a nice guide for beginners as well as experts.

Book Description
The aim of this book is twofold: to provide a comprehensive account of the foundations of the theory and to outline a theoretical and philosophical interpretation suggested from the results of the last twenty years.
There is a need to provide an account of the foundations of the theory because recent experience has largely confirmed the theory and offered a wealth of new discoveries and possibilities. On the other side, the following results have generated a new basis for discussing the problem of the interpretation: the new developments in measurement theory; the experimental generation of "Schrödinger cats"; recent developments which allow, for the first time, the simultaneous measurement of complementary observables; quantum information processing, teleportation and computation.
To accomplish this task, the book combines historical, systematic and thematic approaches.

Human Impact on Ancient Environments
ASIN: 0801436311 |
Book Description
The Yamal Peninsula in northwestern Siberia is one of the few remaining places on earth where a nomadic people retain a traditional culture. Here in the tundra, the Nenets--one of the few indigenous minorities of the Russian North--follow a lifestyle shaped by the seasonal migrations of the reindeer they herd. For decades under Soviet rule, they weathered harsh policies designed to subjugate them. How the Nenets successfully resisted indoctrination from a powerful totalitarian state and how today they face new challenges to the survival of their culture--these are the subjects of this compelling and lavishly illustrated book. The authors--one the head of a team of Russian ethnographers who have spent many seasons on the peninsula, the other an American attorney specializing in issues affecting the Arctic--introduce the rich culture of the Nenets. They recount how Soviet authorities attempted to restructure the native economy, by organizing herders into collectives and redistributing reindeer and pasture lands, as well as to eradicate the native belief system, by killing shamans and destroying sacred sites. Over the past century, the Nenets have also witnessed the piecemeal destruction of their fragile environment and the forced settlement of part of their population. To understand how this society has survived against all odds, the authors consider the unique strengths of the culture and the characteristics of the outside forces confronting it. Today, the Yamal is known for a new reason: it is the site of one of the world's largest natural gas deposits. The authors discuss the dangers Russian and Western developers present to the Nenets people and recommend policies for land use which will help to preserve this remarkable culture.
Customer Reviews:
The Nenets survive!.......1999-12-08
Osherenko and Golonev have created a work that satisfies scientific researchers, sociologists and casual readers alike. The story of the Nenet people is a fine blend of history, folklore, and sharp realism. The assessments come from professionals who have had real experience; understand political dynamics of both the FSU and the world community; and who can apply their findings to view, to some extent, the future of the Yamal. The authors deeply care about the people of the Yamal and their Arctic environment from both personal and scientific perspectives. They supply the reader with an in-depth view of a society that may represent other societies around the Arctic regions. The Nenets' story is unique in one respect but also applies to Arctic regions in general. Read this book to understand a key issue in world politics and international trade. Read this book to understand use of "The Commons". Read this book to understand indigenous peoples and their struggles. Read this book.

Relavent, informative and easy to understand!.......2002-08-27
From Anthrax to the West Nile Virus and all forms of common and uncommon diseases in between, Perlin and Cohen present this must have information in an easy to follow format. They deal clearly with such topics as current and horrifying as bioterrorism as well as the more common yet equally deadly hazards of under cooked chicken and beef. This book is an excellent source of practical information for families and belongs next to the aspirin and other medical supplies.
The Complete Idiot's Guide Dangerous Diseases and Epidemics.......2002-07-24
It is most appreciated what the authors did in putting such complex information in a format that is understandable for the average person. I think there is a great need for such a work. I wish the authors great success with this book and the ones to follow.
Extremely Valuable Reference.......2002-07-13
A great reference book --- concise and easily readable. It illuminates the diseases we most fear today and brings their backgrounds and transmission down to the layman's level. I especially like the anecdotes Dr. Perlin has inserted in individual chapters to help us better understand disease causes, transmission and effects. A must for the household library!
A Useful Source Of Information For Today's Troubled World.......2002-07-08
This book was extremely helpful in explaining the various diseases and infections we are all hearing so much about today. We are all frightened by this topic and Dr. Perlin's book covered these topics in a very clear and concise manner that anyone could understand. Knowledge is power and this book will help everyone who reads it to better understand the risks that lie ahead.
A good reference.......2002-06-24
I hope I never need the information in this book, but it is a good reference to have on hand. Everything from childhood diseases to food poisoning to anthrax is covered, in a way that is easy to understand. A useful resource for "regular people".
