The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good
ASIN: 1930865546 |
Book Description
Economic growth is the only way out of poverty, and the private sector is best at generating that growth.
Customer Reviews:
Worth a close read.......2004-06-19
A trenchant discussion of the usefulness of government (or lack thereof) in creating sustainable economic growth. Solid, well-written, practical and entertaining. The portions on the privatization and the moral hazards posed by IFA lending were particularly good. If you're a student of economic development, a private sector development professional, or just looking for a primer to help you understand why so much goes so badly wrong in the world's poorest countries, this is the book for you.
A timely, expert, seminal, & intrinscially interesting work.......2004-04-05
Accessibly written by Robert E. Anderson (an economic development expert who has 10 years of experience with the World Bank working on development issues in more than 15 countries), Just Get Out Of The Way: How Government Can Help Business In Poor Countries is a "tell it like it is" account that warns against helping developing countries by pursuing policies that are used in rich countries. Instead, Just Get Out Of The Way stresses that policymakers should pay attention to the specific institutional weaknesses of developing countries, with an especial watch and guard against corruption and cronyism, as well as much simpler market-oriented policies. A timely, expert, seminal, and intrinscially interesting work, Just Get Out Of The Way is a very highly recommended contribution to International Economics Studies collections and a "must read" book for private, corporate, and governmental policy makers in the field of international economic development.

Could be better.......2006-06-07
I am an accounting major, but I think that finance is just as important in business and that is why I am taking a finance course. This book is pretty good for starters like myself, but the author should have more work problems to fine tune the skills needed to really grasp the concepts. I also feel that a student workbook would greatly help. The website for this book is also extremely limited and does not provide any additional help for people that purchase this book. I would not feel comfortable recommending this book to anyone wanting to get a basic knowledge of finance.
It's a good selection.......2005-08-22
This book provides a very useful guide in order to understand the basic theory about Investments. The only one thing that the writer of this book must do is to add is more demonstration problems.
Pick a different text.......2005-02-15
There should be NO typos in a 9th edition. But go ahead and count them - not just in the text, but problems as well. There are times when formulas in the body of chapters are wrong or other times when you don't have all the info needed to answer one of the problems. Universities and instructors should be ashamed of themselves for making you spend $120 on this.
Great Explanations.......2001-09-26
This investment book is sufficiently detailed to explain complicated investment concepts. It has lots of examples with solutions. There are a few errors and I presume the 7th edition has corrected some of them.

For the Novice to Advanced.......2000-11-01
Good book for the beginner to advanced, no nonsense writing and not bogged down with advanced formulas. Should be an expert in the subject after atempting all questions after each topic.

A great read!.......2005-04-27
This is not a great read, actually. It is a book full of statutes and is required reading if you take securities law or securities litigation. Securities law is based on statutes, no action letters, and some case law. Your assigned text will cover the no action letters, case law, and discussion. This is the statute book you need without the filler. It's heavy and dull, but it is absolutely required if you take the classes. Enjoy!

A book revealing future need.......2001-05-21
This book details the courage and persistance of the people who truly care for the world's food problem. They have discovered methods and published them for use by others thinking on the same lines.
The book details the Tohyamas attempts to produce food on sand dunes over which it is considered impossible to grow anything. It would have been a great help if the email addresses for these scientists are also mentioned somewhere, so that other people could contact them directly for help and joint venture projects.

Book Description
Techniques for Desert Reclamation Edited by Andrew S. Goudie School of Geography, University of Oxford Major world environmental issues, such as the degradation of deserts and their margins, are covered in this book. Unlike many volumes which merely analyse the causes and consequences of desertification, this book concentrates on the methods that are available to contend with some of the main symptoms of desert degradation. These symptoms include soil erosion by wind, soil erosion by water, salinization, loss of tree and shrub cover, the loss of animal resources, and the depletion of water resources. If the utility, stability and diversity of arid environments is to be maintained, then the techniques described in this book will need to be employed. The book is global in perspective and is written by academics and consultants with long-continued and diverse experience of desert environments. It attempts to present techniques for desert reclamation in a concise, comprehensive and accessible way, and assumes no technical expertise in the reader.

Book Description
New feature: the complete list of MAK- and BAT values now on a CD-ROM included in the book! The CD-ROM allows easy searches e. g. for substance names or CAS numbers.
MAK values (Maximum Concentrations at the Workplace) and BAT values (Biological Tolerance Values) promote the protection of health at the workplace. They are an efficient indicator for the toxic potential of chemical compounds. This book contains a list of scientifically recommended threshold limit values for about 900 chemical compounds. Carcinogens, germ cell mutagens, embryotoxicants, sensitizing substances and those potentially bearing a risk to pregnancy are treated separately. The evaluations are revised annually by a commission of experts.
Of particular value are the lists of substances which were reviewed in 2003/2004 and substances being examined for the establishment of MAK and BAT values in coming years.

History of the Hour: Clocks and Modern Temporal Orders
ASIN: 0306457873 |
Customer Reviews:
Time's Pendulum kept swinging!.......2000-05-28
It's about the quest to capture Time - from sundials to atomic clocks, this poetic & stimulating history retraces how we've measured this intangible & powerful force. Even though we can split a second into millions of moments we still can't describe what time is. When better than now, as a millennium begins, to read about our hunt for temporal time & how we've measured it. To spelunk the deep reaches of the universe to gauge the clock of the universe, to gauge the age of the orb we squabble over each day. A fascinating read, everything I think to write about this articulate & thoughtful book echoes with double entendres. ()
Dissapointing in the end.......2000-05-24
The first half of this book is excellent in terms of tracking societal evolution and how it meshes with the technical evolution of modern timekeeping devices as well as explaining railroad time and zone time. So facinating that I couldn't put it down. The second half was so boring and dogmatic that if it weren't for the indignation it will certainly cause in any thinking adult, I wouldn't have been able to read 10 pages without going comatose. It covers the world of scientific speculation on the subject of the age of the Earth with virtually no objectivity or tolerance of any alternative opinion. Not only is the second half of the book poorly researched, supported and written (though, to give the author credit it can be difficult to write 170+ pages of unsupportable dogmatic drivel and make it interesting) it isn't even on the same subject you might expect the book to address. If you buy the book, I would recommend saving yourself the tears of frustration and skip part II.
Book Description
From glistening ice roads to frozen canals, in a wonderland where even the richest nobles thrill to the gliding joys of winter, everyone is awaiting the fabulous race to win the magnificent Silver Skates -Except Hans Brinker and his sister Gretel. For the Brinkers are desperately poor, friendless; with a father felled by a crippling head wound, Mother and the children must battle simply to survive. And while Hans and Gretel are strong, fast, disciplined, and loyal....on hand-crafted wooden skates, they can't complete against trained rich kids with fine steel blades....But sometimes....sometimes....good people are given a chance. Sometimes strangers do care. And sometimes a family's love and loyalty can struggle against even the cruelest twists of fate....Sometimes....

They had skated but a few moments when Carl Schummel said mockingly to Hilda, "There's a pretty pair just coming upon the ice! The little ragpickers! Their skates must have been a present from the king direct."
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book in a historical context, children may find it boring.......2007-09-14
Hans Brinker is an interesting book on many levels. As an adult I enjoyed the historic look at where "Hollanders" originated and why some of their traditions are as they are. I also enjoyed the moral aspects of honesty, hard work, integrity and care for family. These are all strong positives for the book.
Unfortunately, the plot and story telling left me a bit disappointed. At one point the story shifts dramatically from the Brinker family to an adventure (almost travel narrative with tour guide notes) with other teens who took a skating trip to see other parts of Holland. This just did not fit well together with the main story. The main story is about Hans and his sister Gretel and their parents. The father has had a severe head injury while working on protecting the dikes.
I think kids might find the reading tedious and difficult to follow.
Oh those riotous Dutch children.......2007-02-26
Hans is great, he's a good boy. The Dutch are great, they work with integrity. All is great about the Dutch- but the plot. Those Dutch children are not a riotous bunch. After reading about ice canal for the umpteenth time...I fell asleep.
Ice is lovely, but not for 20 pages.
I read about the author first.......2005-11-03
When I was in grade school, I read a biography of Mary Mapes Dodge. which described her personal life while she was writing Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates. The book became the #1 item on my Christmas wish list and that wish was granted. I read the book numerous times during my lifetime and quite unexpectedly as a corporate wife, I had the quite lovely experience of living in the Netherlands in an extraordinary year when the canals froze and when they had actual ice skate racing and kettle sweeping on the canals. I felt I was living in the story which I had read so many times. I hope today's children read it with all the excitement I did and then get the wonderful opportunity to speak the language and live with the wonderful people there.
Delight for all ages.......2005-08-25
I remembers Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates as one of my favorite childhood books and wanted to try it again. It was as delightful in my middle age as when I was seven years old. The forward about Mary Mapes Dodge, when she lived and how she came to write, was an added pleasure. The facts about Holland blended with the touching story of Hans and his family make it a nearly perfect read. My 70-something mother-in-law finished the book in a day and liked it as well. To read it is to feel like you are flying down the ice yourself.
Not As Good As Ya May Think.......2004-06-06
This story is one of the silliest and most unusual stories I have ever read. While countless other reviewers compare this book to the masterpiece 'Swiss Family Robinson', I think it stinks. It has a silly ice-centric story. Hans Brinker and his pompous little sister are obsessed by the beginning ice skating so much, they are cery hungry for silver ice skates. (at the time of this book's release most skates were made of wood). But this book is horrible. It left a taste reminiscent of Brussels Sprouts in my mouth. Stay away.

Book Description
What did Africans think of the first Europeans they saw? Why did some Africans seek political and religious alliances with Europeans? How successful were African traders in acquiring what they wanted from Europeans in the new Atlantic trade? Africa's Discovery of Europe: 1450-1850 provides surprising answers to these and many other questions. This groundbreaking book on African-European interactions is the first to look broadly at the subject from an African perspective rather than from a European one. David Northrup explores the African side of this cultural collision as it unfolded in Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic world between 1450 and 1850. Featuring extensive use of life stories and quotations from Africans, the text is organized thematically with chapters devoted to first impressions, religion and politics, commerce and culture, imported goods and technology, the Middle Passage, and Africans in Europe. Northrup examines Africans' intellectual, commercial, cultural, and sexual relations with Europeans and describes how the patterns of behavior that emerged from these encounters shaped precolonial Africa. The book concludes with an examination of the roles of race, class, and culture in early modern times, and suggests which themes in Africa's continuing discovery of Europe after 1850 were similar to earlier patterns, and why some themes were different. Africa's Discovery of Europe: 1450-1850 is ideal for undergraduate courses on modern African, Atlantic, and world history and is also engaging for general readers.
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-05-15
This book offers a different look at Africans at a crucial time in history.
Through African Eyes.......2003-10-03
David Northrup provides the reader with a unique experience in AFRICA'S DISCOVERY OF EUROPE, 1450-1850. Using direct and indirect quotations from 16th-19th century Africans whenever possible, he recreates four centuries of African reactions to Europe and Europeans. Emphasizing the diversity of African experiences and opinions, he documents their interactions with and opinions of European traders, priests, and rulers. He examines the impact on Africa of European products, technology, and religion (as well as the slave trade), always focusing on the actions and choices of specific African groups and individuals. Individual Africans appear vividly on his pages, sometimes in a single sentence, sometimes in more detail: rulers and slaves, traders and slavers, Christian converts and Eurafricans, Africans who visited Europe and those who spent a lifetime there. Amply footnoted, the slender (200-page) volume is very readable and does not overwhelm the general reader with masses of detail or a pedantic tone. Challenging not only the dominant Eurocentric viewpoint of most American books on Africa but also the monotone view of Africans as passive victims of European domination, Northrup's approach is refreshing. He attempts not a definitive account but one that provokes speculation and invites further research, while sharing sources that personalize these critical centuries of African history. A thoroughly enjoyable book.
