Good overview of fixed income attribution. Discusses in general different attribution methodologies. I was hoping that the author would've discussed duration-based attribution in more detail. However, the purpose of my purchase was to get an overview of the topic which the author successfully achieved.

THIS BOOK IS JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE MANY PUBLICATIONS IN THIS SUBJECT MATTER THAT MISSES THE WHOLE POINT.

Concise, big picture treatment of the subject.......2001-02-15

This text, while lacking in rigour and detail, is an ideal supplement for self-study or lectures on modern mathematical methods in physics. In fact, it is precisely its lack of detail that allows it to act as the yin to the yang of other, weightier texts. Most books on this subject obscure the big picture behind their equations, reducing pleasant geometry to the grimy level of analysis. No such crime is committed here, and the reader is much the better for it. To be sure, this is not a stand-alone text - to not delve into the details would only enter the reader into the false security of ignorance. However, it is most definitely a must-have book for anyone interested in modern physics and mathematics.

excellent introduction to relevant topics!.......2000-04-18

This is a concise introduction to applications of differential geometry on some improtant topics in physics, such as gauge theories, gravity...etc. Despite its size (which is rather comfortable for readers who prefer less abstract definitions and theorems), nothing essential to the spirit of the topics has been missed, I personally think it sure is one of the excellent books on these subjects and am glad to recommand it to you all who love and want to discover the geometric aspects of physics!

Aside from their Caucasian homeland of Abkhazia, there are significant numbers of Abkhazians and their descendants settled throughout Russia and the Middle East, particularly Turkey. Their history, like other peoples and nations of the region, has been closely linked with the expansion of the Russians; the collapse of the Soviet Union, however, resulted in further domination, this time by the Georgian Republic, leading to the catastrophe of the War of 1992-3 and the scattering of the people that followed. With the publication of this book, which includes an entirely new interpretation of Abkhazia's union with Russia over the period from the 18th century to 1917, the relevant facts about Abkhazia have finally become accessible to the English-speaking world.

Lots of information, but not entirely trustable.......2005-05-15

In case you are not already familiar with Abkhazia, let me give a very brief summary of its current situation. Abkhazia (or Abkhazeti to Georgians, or Apsny to its current government) is a small region in northwest Georgia, which was an autonomous republic (meaning only that the titular nationality had its culture promoted and benefited from a Soviet form of affirmative action) within Georgia during Soviet times. After Georgia broke away from the Soviet Union, Abkhazia managed (with some Russian help) to break away from Georgia following a war in 1992-1993 that was accompanied by ethnic cleansing and the flight of most of the ethnic Georgians in the region (200,000-250,000, or almost half of Abkhazia's 1989 population). Abkhazia has managed to maintain de facto independence ever since, though it has not been recognized by any other nation.

In this volume, Hewitt, a professor of Caucasian languages at the University of London, presents 16 essays on Abkhazia (in English), mostly written by Abkhazians themselves. These essays cover the geography, history, economy, language, culture, religion and demography of Abkhazia and thus form a very valuable source of information on Abkhazia for English speakers.

Unfortunately, because all of the material comes from Abkhazians or supporters of the Abkhazian side in the current conflict, I can't consider the information they present (especially that relating to twentieth-century history) entirely trustworthy. I recently wrote a long research paper on this conflict and found myself pulling my hair out trying to deal with the conflicting claims made by the two sides on a large number of issues. The allegations of ethnic cleansing and genocide made by both sides, as well as the issue of Russia's involvement in Abkhazia and the continuing refugee crisis, all serve to create and perpetuate a great deal of tension and conflict between the two sides (as can be seen by glancing through the reviews below). By (openly and unapologetically) backing one side in such a divisive and complicated conflict, Hewitt has done his readers a disservice. He has made it hard to fully trust the information the book contains and has made it more difficult for readers to really understand the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict.

That said, if you're interested in learning about the former (and possibly future) "Georgian Riviera", you will find a lot of information in this volume. It's up to you to decide how much to trust it. If you are seriously interested in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict, you will definitely need to check out additional sources. I would suggest starting with some volumes edited by Bruno Coppieters (et al.) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB): "Georgians and Abkhazians: the search for a Peace Settlement" and "Federal practice: exploring alternatives for Georgia and Abkhazia", both of which are available online on the VUB Web site. Both of these volumes are in English and include both Georgian and Abkhazian (as well as third-party) contributors.

a remark.......2005-05-08

Although I'm ethnic Georgian, I'm not going to engage in a discussion of Abkhaz-Georgian painful relationships. And why? because 1. I may be subjective becaus of my origin and 2. although i'm historic and i've read lots of materials about the issue, i never specialized in it. Our dear author, on the other hand, does not share these principles that are neccesary for every scientist: 1. he is a good linguist but nothing more, so he better stick to lignuistics 2. I hate to say that, but his false enthusiasm to "protect the right of Abkhazians" derives from the fact that he is merried to Abkhazian. Plain and Simple...

Awesome Contribution, but Biased.......2004-05-14

I see that the reviews for this book are polarized - not surprised. Well, this book is biased in favor of the Abkhazians, for additional info about that you can look up its review in the Academic Journal _Slavic Review_. However, I'm neither Georgian nor Abkhazian, and I'm doing research on the Caucasus for my MA in Russian and East European Studies, and this book is invaluable! If you can mentally offset his bias as you read, which is pretty obvious, by the way, then you will find the information in this volume extremely valuable, especially for being in the English language.

ABKHAZIAN IS A REGIONAL NAME OF ETHNIC GEORGIANS.......2003-07-01

GEORGIA derives from two Georgian(Cartuli) words:GE-means 'on earth. on the ground' and d'orgi--means 'to plant a tree, a flower etc. These are in the ancient Georgian dialect called Margali. Margali also means 'to plant a tree etc. in earth, in the ground. In the most ancient Georgian dialect Svanuri 'l'Iver' means the earth(the ground, the land that is cultivated), hence all those words: Georgia, Margali.Iveria mean the nation, ethnicity that has invented or has greatly contributed to the agriculture. The Georgians are an agriculturist nation. Cardu was an ancestor of all ethnic Iverians, Margals(Megrels),Georgians. 'Abkhaz' is a regional name of ethnic Iverians(Megrels. Abkhazeti(Abkhazia in English) is an ordinary region of Iveria(Georgia). The Georgians that live in the Georgian region Abkhazia are called 'Abkhazian Georgians', Abkhazians. The Georgians that live in another region of Georgia, say, in Guria, are called Gurians(the president of Georgia Mr. Eduard Shevardnadze is regionally from Guria, but ethnicly the Iverian, the Georgian, though many persons were shocked to learn that he wrote in his documents when he worked in Russia that he was not Georgian, but another nationality. The first president of Georgia Mr. Zviad Gamsakhurdia was Megreli regionally and ethnically Georgian; his father's mother was Abkhazian--i.e. regionally Abkhazian and ethnically Georgian. Abkhazia was and is the bulluork of the Iverian(Georgian, Megruli) ethnicity and in the middle ages the word 'Abkhazeti' was identical to the word 'Georgia' used today. Abkhazian dynasty of Georgia was the Georgian dynasty whose members derived from the Georgian region Abkhazeti. This ABC about Abkhazians is absolutely distorted in G. Hewitte's book 'The Apsua Abkhazians'--that is the full name of that book. On the cover is a photo of the Georgian elderly man. The truth in that book is reversed. There is not the conflict between Abkhazia AND Georgia, as Abkhazia is Georgia and the International community must not back the putchists entetained and raised in the universities of Russia where they learned writing lies. The word 'nation' in the encyclopedias is explained as a LARGE group of persons that differ from their neighbors in the mother tongue, habits, culture. Only 8 thousand persons were registered as being 'REAL ABKHAZ' in 1835 according to Frederick Dubois's 'Voyge to the Caucasus' printed in French in 1839 and based on the unpublished official information obtained by him from a Russian official--an occupant of Georgia. In the archives of Georgia there are documents that prove that the government of the Soviet Georgia applied to the Statistical department of the USSR in Moscow to register so-called Abkhaz persons correctly--as ethnic Georgians. This document was sent to Moscow in 1927. The truth concerning Abkhazia was rehabilitated when Mr. Lavrenti Beria was Head of the Republic of Georgia in the thirties and afterwards when he was moved to the Department of the Defence of Caucasus region when he and I. Jugashvili were main figures that defeated Fascism in the world. Ingratitude to these leaders is abomonable. L. Beria peacefully muved the unwanted recent immigrants from Georgia to their homelands in the east of the USSR. Eltsin and V. Putin committed the genocide of hundreds of various ethnicities and are starving the population to death . G. Hewitte does not mention that the Apsua ethnicity lived far from Abkhazia and it is unnatural to identify those Apsuas (insignificant number of the new arrivals pushed into Caucasia from the Urals area and ajacent regions after the Suvorov and Catherine II of Russia occupied the lands of the Kazakhs, the Cossaks, of the Cabardians (these lived far from the region called Cabarda in Soviet times and today). The basicideas are reversed in G. Hewitte's book. In "Genocide in Abkhazia' the author Mr. Tamaz Nadareishvili--himself an Abkhaz( i.e. regionally Abkhaz, ethnically Georgian as all Abkhaz are) published ample material on the subject that Russia invaded Abkhazian region of Georgia and Abkhazians and other Georgians--from other regions of Georgia are victims of the Russian aggression. G. Hewitte writes that Georgins invaded Abkhazia and that is not true. A scientist should help rehabilitate peace and truth. G. Hewitte's book does only harm, distorts both history and today of the Georgian region called today Abkhazeti, but called in former centuries another name--Samegrelo, Imereti.

How cool?.......2002-07-18

Very one sided. By the way do you remember the recent news that the radioactive substance has been kidnaped/lost out of Sokhumi (Abkhazia) for possible terrorist purpose? Yes, thats what the regime does which is advocated by this book. How do you think the regime in Abkhazia survives? They have no economic growth (there is an economic embargo imposed), no trade, and almost nothing! People are starving there. Think a little bit dear reader what are the other ways that the separatist regime in that condition could employ to survive? It is obviously arms trade, drug traffic, and now this news about the radioactive substance. Cool book, long live "independent" Abkhazia but careful: tide is turning!

There are not many good texts that attempt to cover the common dilemmas of regions considered part of the 'third world.' Given the competition, this is a solid textbook that take a broad view of political, economic, and social change. Supplemented by more detailed explorations of particular countries or regions, this would be a good textbook for studying the developing world.

I purchased this book as a pre-requisite for a political science class. I thought that tis book would be boring and written as a text book, but it was enjoyable to read. I especially like reading about how Government's in Third world countries interact on economic, social, and religious levels.

This book reproduces J-P. Serre's 1964 Harvard lectures. The aim is to introduce the reader to the "Lie dictionary": Lie algebras and Lie groups. Special features of the presentation are its emphasis on formal groups (in the Lie group part) and the use of analytic manifolds on p-adic fields. Some knowledge of algebra and calculus is required of the reader, but the text is easily accessible to graduate students, and to mathematicians at large.

Nice and complete, but very Bourbaki-looking........2000-05-04

The same problem with all Bourbaki authors: They treat the subject in a very concise, abstract, and authoritative way, but present almost no motivation to introduce the subject, and they are not so used to give extensive and accurate references. Of course Serre is a leading expert in the field, but he (nobody) cannot be regarded as the inventor of the theory, so the absence of such a bibliography is not justifiable.

The contents of the book are: Lie algebras, filtered groups and lie algebras, universal algebra of a Lie algebra, free Lie algebras, nilpotent and solvable Lie algebras, semisimple Lie algebras, representations of sl_n, complete fields, analytic functions, analytic manifolds, analytic groups, Lie theory. Includes excercises.

Useful for graduate students and working mathematicians, along with a "lighter" reference.
