This book analyzes the relationship between management, work and welfare across Western Europe at the end of the twentieth century. In a unique study, the authors consider the political and economic connections between management practices, national industrial relations and welfare institutions.

The authors first consider the history of European work and welfare practices, and then focus on trends in the post-war period. They discover that growing similarities in European work and welfare practices represent a gradual shift away from the ethos of collective to individual responsibility. The authors find that the oil recessions of the 1970s, the resurgence of the political right, the collapse of communism and the European Union's response to global forces have destabilized the post-war welfare regime. They also conclude that these forces have led to a gradual, though not irreversible, shift towards the 'contract' model of citizenship which prevails in the United States.

This book is essential reading for all those interested in European management, employment relations and social policy.

Extraordinary! I've just finished reading this book and it could only have been written by Mary Rowland - she's the best! It's fun, insightful, thoughtful, educational and chock full of useful information. Suffice it to say that anyone purporting to be a financial advisor should find a new career if they don't read this book. The list of readers shouldn't stop with the investment advisor. Vendors, fund and portfolio managers, wholesalers, regulators and related professionals would do well to have a copy of their own

The pace of scholarly research and academic publication in fields of Judaica has quickened dramatically in the second half of the twentieth century. The major consumers and producers of this new scholarship are found in Jewish Studies programs that have proliferated at institutions of higher learning around the world since the 1960s. From the vantage point of the nineties, it is difficult to fathom that until thirty years ago, Jewish studies courses were mainly limited to a few elite universities, rabbinical seminaries, and Hebrew teachers' colleges. Today there are few colleges at public or private insitutions of higher learning that do not sponsor at least some courses on aspects of Jewish study.

In light of this explosion of research on Jewish topics, non-specialists and educators can benefit from guidance through the thicket of new monographs, source anthologies, textbooks and scholarly essays.
