5 out of 5 stars No more Blue Mondays.......2004-06-29

No More Blue Mondays helped me in the transition to move on...I was really having terrible mondays, i didn't want to go to work anymore...This book was great, help me a lot with my decision (I made a change in carrer), this was 1 year ago, and i can truly say it help me to take the best decision and make the transition smooth. Also it is a very easy to read and apply book. The price is nothing in comparison with the benefits...i did not need any professional help...this book was enough.

5 out of 5 stars Best Career Book on the Market!.......2002-01-27

Thank you, Robin, for the wisdom, practical guidance, and down-to-earth nature of your book. It had an immediate and profound impact on me personally.

Two weeks ago, I ordered your book for what I thought would be a resource for my career coaching clients. Yet I quickly realized that I was really reading it for my own benefit. I had insight after insight for myself, saw clearly how off track my business had become, and what I wanted to do to redesign it.

Your four keys to finding fulfillment at work enabled me to quickly get to the core of what was going on for me and brought to the forefront the actions I needed to take to get back on course. I highly recommend your book to anyone who wants to find more satisfaction and fulfillment in their work. In my eyes, "No More Blue Mondays" is the best career book on the market!

5 out of 5 stars Real-Life Examples that Really Enliven a Career........2000-06-29

I've been a career consultant since 1979, and this book is fresh! Most of the career books I've seen are filled with theory and instructions, but show little proof that it works. Here, finally, is a book that is not only right on the money, but it's believable. What I mean is that Robin's book is full of real-life examples; person after person, example after example, story after story. You get it: her "four keys" are not dreamt up in some ivory tower -- they are practical, applicable, powerful, field-tested tools to accomplish a successful career transition. They really work.

When I read other career books, my mind often says, "Well, that's nice in theory, but how do you do that in the real world?" Well, it's clear that Robin's "four keys" have played out, time and again, in real-life people. By aptly illustrating the theory, these stories activate a different part of my brain -- they get me motivated, thinking, "Hey, if so-and-so can do this, so can I!" It's not pie in the sky, happily ever after, career fairy tales. Robin's people are real. You feel their pain. You hear their discouragements, wrong turns, applaud their persistence. You follow their paths of doubt and courage, you see how human and fallable they are (just like you), and you also see how the "four keys" have guided their way out of the toughest career predicaments. And you believe those keys work for you, too!

If you're looking for a book that will have you cheering for others, and, then, soon, cheering for yourself, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Winner of the Ben Franklin Award!.......2000-06-21

I always knew this was a truly great book. Now, it appears, everyone agrees with me! No More Blue Mondays was just given a Ben Franklin Award. This means that this is the top book for the year in the Career area as rated by publishing industry professionals. Read it and find out why!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Just Keep Analyzing Yourself-Get Moving Forward.......1999-12-23

No More Blue Mondays helped me get out of the rut of unproductive, self-examination and moved me to begin researching what I really wanted to do with my work life. This book very practically and very specifically guided me from frustration, feeling 'too old' or 'not qualified' to real empowerment in choosing my new direction. Sheerer very pointedly tells you to 'get over it' when feelings of self-pity become obstacles to your appreciation of your own talents and possibilites. Action plans get you moving and involved in discovering the next career step way before the process of applying for specific positions even begins. This book really helped me to know my own heart which moved me to a career path that I have always wanted. No More Blue Mondays and no more switching jobs every three years out of dissatisfaction.

        Book Description

During the 1990s illegal immigration has become a global problem of immense proportions. South Africa, for example, is host to between 1 and 2 million illegal immigrants, while it is believed that over 100,000 Chinese citizens illegally enter the United States every year. With migration flows from the developing world to the developed, many countries have become both trans-shipment centres and unwilling hosts for migrants en route to their final destinations. During their travel alien immigrants are easily victimized and even when they arrive, many are forced into a life of hardship and crime. This volume studies the role of criminal organizations in human commodity trafficking, examining the problem from a global vantage point and from a variety of regional perspectives. It also assesses the adequacy of existing policy responses and identifies additional measures that need to be taken.

              Book Description

This book concentrates on the following specific topics: the dynamic character of lipids and proteins in biological membranes, the existence of specific domains in membranes including their visualisation, the molecular mechanisms of intracellular transport of membrane constituents and the involvement of lipid-protein interactions in these processes, protein assembly, structure and folding and transport through membranes and the intracellular sorting and targeting of individual membrane components as well as different organelles. The work gives a good overview of these topics. It starts with a detailed review of the biosynthesis of phosphoplipids, enravelled by advanced genetic approaches and is followed by reviews of the specific intracellular routing of the various phospholipids, the arrangements in micro-domains in the membrane and the visualisation of these structures by Atomic Force Microscopy. The role of lipids in protein sorting, routing, insertion and translocation through membranes is presented in several contributions. Up to date information on membrane protein structure and assembly can be found in two articles followed by a series of contributions dealing with the molecular mechanisms of protein insertion and translocation. Both the prokaryotic systems, dealing with insertion and translocation of proteins in relation to export, as well as eukaryotic mechanisms of intracellular translocation are discussed in relation to organelle biogenesis and in particular the mitochondrion caught attention. Finally, intracellular protein and organelle traffic is summarised in detail. This complex phenomenon involves a large number of cell compartments and different tracks along which compounds can traffic into or out of the cell interior.

A vivid cultural panorama of perhaps the most diverse society in Latin America: Mexico This historical overview of Mexico explores at every opportunity what it is that makes contemporary Mexico the fascinating and vibrant melange of cultures that it is. Embracing an exuberant array of ethnic diversity-including Amerindian, African-American, and European cultures-Mexico is emblematic of much of the clash and combination of cultures that characterizes virtually all of Latin America, from the earliest European conquest and colonization to the present day, The Mexicans: A Sense of Culture captures and reveals the intriguing complexities of daily life in Mexico, from its artistic pursuits to its political and economic patterns.

A good story, Victor Villaseñor writes in the opening pages of this sequel to Rain of Gold, can save your life.

Consider, he continues in this memorable portrait of Latino family life, the case of his grandparents, who fled from civil-war-torn Mexico to the United States in 1910. As they traveled north, his father told Villaseñor, "Cannons were blasting. People were screaming and dying. The creeks ran red with blood." But Villaseñor's grandmother's stories about "the stars, the moon, the she-fox" kept the children's minds off the terrors around them, guiding them to their new homeland and shaping family history. That history provides the grist for Villaseñor's exuberantly spinning mill, yielding a sprawling narrative shot through with touches of magical realism and homespun philosophy, and tinged occasionally with regret--as when, for instance, Villaseñor's mother confesses, "I miss your father so much ... but I'm the one who could never bring myself to tell him that I loved him."

But sorrow is rare and humor plentiful as Villaseñor affectionately recounts his relatives' travails and improbable dreams, some of which, like a grandfather's quest for gold in a hidden Mexican canyon, come true. As he writes, Villaseñor underscores the importance of tradition, faith, forgiveness, and, yes, good stories in making life livable, and this good story will please many readers. --Gregory McNamee

                                Book Description

A daring memoir of love, magic, adventure, and miracles, Victor Villaseñor's Thirteen Senses continues the exhilarating family saga that began in the widely acclaimed bestseller Rain of Gold, delivering a stunning story of passion, family, and the forgotten mystical senses that stir within us all.

Thirteen Senses begins with the fiftieth wedding anniversary of the aging former bootlegger Salvador and his elegant wife, Lupe. When asked by a young priest to repeat the sacred ceremonial phrase "to honor and obey," Lupe surprises herself and says. "No, I will not say 'obey.' How dare you! You don't talk to me like this after fifty years of marriage and I now knowing what I know!" After the hilarious shock of Lupe's rejection of the ceremony, the Villaseñor family is forced to examine the love that Lupe and Salvador have shared for so many years -- a universal, gut-honest love that will eventually energize and inspire the couple into old age.

In Thirteen Senses, Victor Villaseñor brings readers into the Bonnie-and-Clyde-like world of his colorful, immigrant family: a world set in Depression-era Southern California: a harsh world, where only the wily and strong survive, and where love, passion, and commitment to familia are the sole dependable forces in Lupe's and Salvador's lives. In the unfolding of their story, we see Lupe move beyond her young and naive conventions of femininity to become a vessel of power, strength, courage, and brains. Salvador, in turn, is forced to extend beyond his macho "Godfather" persona, becoming whole by learning to listen to the intuitive wisdom of his young wife.

Thirteen Senses, in the end, is a rapturous depiction of love between all men and women. In writing this breakthrough memoir about Lupe and Salvador's adventurous desire, Victor Villaseñor uncovers a path toward enlightenment, enabling us to realize that an awakened soul is not restricted by the use of five senses, but capable of using the power of all sacred thirteen.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Realism and the Exuberance of Youth.......2005-09-16

Stream of consciousness books like this one are always a risk. So in the end, I liked it. I liked it for the candidness and the luck that seemed to pervade the characters. More than anything though, I like "13 Senses" for the magical realism and the strength of the women. The Bonnie and Clyde "esque" quality lends itself to a recklessness that is the exuberance of youth. Villaseñor's situates the whole book on the extra senses that is almost forgotten by hard core materialists - yes matter precedes all but the senses six through nine. (Ten through thirteen seem to reside in some outer realm) but it is funny. Many will argue that it is short on reason and full of anecdote - yes, but that is the strength of the book not its weakness. My guess is that if we changed that "thing" within ourselves that looks for the clean and neat narrative - we lose all the heavenly glory.

I was truly excited to hear Villasenor had written a continuation to Rain of Gold! I could hardly wait to get my hands on a copy of Thirteen Senses, and I'm so happy I did. Rain of Gold did so much to change my perspective on the Mexican experience in this century, and I felt a longing to know what happened to Lupe and Salvadore after their marriage ceremony. This story really came through, showing their growth as a couple along with their individual spiritual growth. This story is about growing into real adulthood and loosing our childish self centeredness. It's about discovering how incredible a person can be, and how far limits can be pushed.

I think the sequence where Lupe is talking with her mother-in-law an Idigeneous Mexican Indian was very moving. Finished the book on our way to San Francisco were we visited our daughter-in-love" and our son and grandchild. Have been struggleing with the "Thirteenth Sense" all my life, and if I can't make it on a beautiful barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico, with my husband of 37 years, there is no hope for the rest of us. Buying the book for Christmas gifts to give all the people who give meaning to my life. Beautifully written and with such sensitivity it makes you want to invite Victor for dinner.

4 out of 5 stars A MEXICAN LIFE IN THE ROARING 20'S.......2002-03-22

I would suggest reading "Rain of Gold" first as it lays the background for Thirteen Senses and I, personally, thought Rain of Gold was the better story which pointed out the meaning of LOVE in a myriad of ways that was better than most other descriptions I have ever read.

The weakness of this story is the overuse of the Almighty's powers and Salvador's mother's retelling her philosophy of life page after page after page. If 50 to 75 pages of this type dissertation was edited out, it would be a much better story. The religious nature of both primary familys' is very important to the story, however, it is overdone. While reading I was comparing the American Indian's religious beliefs (which I love) along with the Mexican Indian's outlook. Quite the same in many ways, particularly when actually changing from human to animal form and then back to human. Fascinating.

I read this book out loud to my wife and she also enjoyed it and would most certainly recommend this being a fine reading experience, however, she also agrees there is too much philosophy given by Dona Guadalupe, Salvador's mother. Her meanderings are important to the story, but you can pass by many paragraphs when she gets too wound up.

I am an avid reader. There are few books that can lead me into a matrix of wisdom and forever change my world. Villasenor has a universe of wisdom to share through his captivating stories. I have read Rain of Gold which is superb and now Thirteen Senses which is every bit as marvelous. I just found out about Wild Steps of Heaven and
plan on partaking in yet another masterpiece. Everyone I have loaned one of his books to has become a true fan. I would highly reccommend Thirteen Senses! For that matter you can't go wrong with any of his books.

5 out of 5 stars need a new mind to get this book.......2005-07-20

It is hard for people to grasp how profound this book is because we tend to read it with the commonsense mind that Hagen is telling us fools us. So it takes a patient reading to understand that this book actually is pointing to the answer to ALL difficult questions. There is a bit of math which I had to skip or read several times, but I got it from the rest of the pages with examples. I wish there were more examples. But the time I spent going slow on this book was so worth the time. It is adding greatly to my thinking about how to work with people and systems in a more consciousness way, which is my work.

This book is about learning that we have two levels of engaging with, seeing, the world and we are not using the second or more perceptive one very often or very well and it is the one that would remove paradox for us and contradictions. Our on common sense which gets trapped in our categorizing and conceptualizing, gets in our way of really seeing. Learning to see the flow of life that makes things more complex than we every imagined but also very graspable if we look with the right mind is the reward. I almost have the feeling that it is like squinting to shut out part of what gets in our way so we can see more clearly. But that is too simple.

It you value the idea of Systems thinking, which has become very popular now days, you can see what it is really about when you submit yourself to understanding this work. It is not what the popular folks say systems thinking is, because they have used Hagen's first level commonsense view to define and decribe it and not the consciousness view offered by Hagen from the Buddhist way of seeing.

REad it if you love philosophy which can really make a difference

5 out of 5 stars Steve Hagen's How the World Can Be the Way It Is.......2004-06-06

I think this is a great book. I wanted to write a review of it because I think a few of the other Amazon.com reviews are a little misleading. First, one reader questions "whether it is possible - through zen meditation or otherwise - to 'see the world the way it is'" and goes on to say that he doesn't believe it is possible. It seems to me that he is too quick to dismiss what Hagen calls "just seeing." Obviously, it is not something that can be believed or disbelieved, because it is beyond conceptual thought and therefore, doubt. This seems too important to simply write off as being impossible without giving it much consideration.

Another reader says, "To be a little more blunt, the author sure seems to waste a lot of words and concepts trying to convince us of the uselessness of words and concepts." I don't think Hagen is trying to say that words and concepts are useless, in fact, I know that isn't what he is saying. It would be impossible to get by on a day-to-day basis without concepts and words. How could this book have even been written if words and concepts were useless? I think that Hagen is actually trying to say is that we tend to mistake concepts for what is Real and completely lose sight of what is directly in front of us. Words and concepts are very important, but they cannot be substituted for Reality without causing a lot of harm to us. "Just seeing" does not mean that one becomes completely free from all concepts, it simply means that one becomes aware of all conceptual thought and is not confused or misled by it.

While this book may not be "groundbreaking" (in fact, it is simply a modern version of teachings that have existed for hundreds of years), it presents everything clearly and does not require a strong background in science, mathematics, or philosophy to appreciate. If you are interested, I would highly recommend reading this book.

Of all the books on Philosophy, Religion, Science, and their parts in the Big Picture, I have found this book by Steve Hagen the most helpful. Why? Because it puts into language I can understand--simple and to the point--the essence of Buddhism as exemplified in the story of the Eighty-Three Problems (qv) which is resolved by Gautama saying we all have all kinds of problems which he cannot help us with. But he can help us with the 84th problem: that we do not want problems in our lives. Everything depends on how you see things. That is the solution. Just see clearly. This book shows how. Not a slick and easy read, because it deals with the ultimate. But even at a first reading you can taste the truth in it.

                                10-Point Rating: (7.5)
Although this book presents some interesting issues and even though I accept its premise for the most part, the author's use of a mathmetical analogy to describe his "tetralemma" is severely flawed. To equate the metaphysical operator with the mathematical operator <+> rather than <=> is a serious mistake. To equate imaginary numbers (which are quite conceivable) with the concept of the Unconceivable does a good deal of violence to both. Another problem with the presentation is the "anti-positivist circularity" it partakes of: if statements always fail to "capture" reality, then no such statement can even be made to that effect, for even it would fail to "capture" reality. In other words, if I make the statement "there is no truth," or more precisely, "there are no true statements," then that very statement defeats itself, by disallowing even itself to be true. To be a little more blunt, the author sure seems to waste a lot of words and concepts trying to convince us of the uselessness of words and concepts.

Hagen does a good job at getting you to challenge your beliefs and "just see" as he calls it. He has one of the best laymans descriptions of Bell's Theorm and the problem of faster than light communication.
