Primate Ontogeny, Cognition and Social Behaviour (Selected Proceedings of the Tenth Congress of the International Primatological Society)
Phyllis C. Lee , and James G. Else Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 052131013X |
Book Description
This volume presents a comprehensive review of the current research in the field of primate thinking, learning and behavioural development. Recent theories of the ways in which primates perceive their world are integrated with the ways that they behave and communicate about each other and their environment. Many different species in both the wild and in captivity are discussed with coverage from the social development of neonates to the behaviour of adults. The common theme to the contributions is an attempt to understand how primates perceive, learn about and manipulate their social and physical environment.

Atom-Probe Field Ion Microscopy: Field Ion Emission, and Surfaces and Interfaces at Atomic Resolution
Tien T. Tsong Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0521019931 |
Book Description
Atom-probe field ion microscopy is currently the only technique capable of imaging solid surfaces with atomic resolution, and at the same time of chemically analyzing surface atoms selected by the observer from the field ion image. Field ion microscopy has been successfully used to study most metals and many alloys, and recently good field ion images of some semiconductors and even ceramic materials such as high temperature superconductors have been obtained. Although other microscopies are capable of achieving the same resolution, there are some experiments unique to field ion microscopy--for example the study of the behavior of single atoms and clusters on a solid surface. The very elegant development of the field ion microscope with the atom-probe has provided a powerful and useful technique for highly sensitive chemical analysis. This book presents the basic principles of atom-probe field ion microscopy and illustrates the various capabilities of the technique in the study of solid surfaces and interfaces at atomic resolution.

Herman Melville: Moby Dick, Billy Budd and Other Writings (Library of America College Editions)
Herman Melville Manufacturer: Library of America ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1883011892 |
Book Description
Herman Melville's brilliant works remain vital and provocative for their dark ebullience and visionary power. The sweep of his writings-encompassing ferocious social satire, agonized reflection, and formal experimentation-is represented in this comprehensive edition. Here are Melville's masterpieces: Moby-Dick in its entirety; Billy Budd; "Bartleby, The Scrivener"; "The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles"; the essay "Hawthorne and His Mosses"; and 21 poems, including "The House-top," an anguished response to the New York draft riots.Customer Reviews:
A good introduction to Melville's works.......2005-07-28
best one-volume melville?.......2001-12-23
There is a "Note on the Texts" here, which is really of interest only to specialists, and a chronology of Melville's life, and some rather random and cursory endnotes: there are only a few pages' worth for "Moby-Dick," for example, which could be annotated much more extensively (and I'm sure it has been). It's unclear why the editors choose to explain some of Melville's allusions but not others. So if you're looking for a well-annotated "Moby-Dick," look elsewhere.
As for the works themselves, there's little I could say about them that hasn't been said a thousand times before. Every one of Melville's lines crackle with dark intensity; his writing is relentless, wild, eccentric, sometimes out of control, but even then it's a pleasure to follow him on his fiery way. His is a kind of uniquely American tragic sense, the dark flip side of Emerson and Whitman's democratic individualism. Ahab, and Bartleby, are supreme individualists, but their uncompromised visions lead to doom rather than liberation.

History As Re-enactment: R. G. Collingwood's Idea of History (Clarendon Paperbacks)
William H. Dray Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0198238819 |
Book Description
A central motif of R. G. Collingwood's philosophy of history is the idea that historical understanding requires a re-enactment of past experience. However, there have been sharp disagreements about the acceptability of this idea, and even its meaning. This book aims to advance the critical discussion in three ways: by analysing the idea itself further, concentrating especially on the contrast which Collingwood drew between it and scientific understanding; by exploring the limits of its applicability to what historians ordinarily consider their proper subject-matter; and by clarifying the relationship between it and some other key Collingwoodian ideas, such as the place of imagination in historical inquiry, the sense in which history deals with the individual, the essential perspectivity of historical judgement, and the importance of narrative and periodization in historical thinking. Professor Dray defends Collingwood against a good deal of recent criticism, while pointing to ways in which his position requires revision or development. History as Re-enactment draws upon a wide range of Collingwood's published writings, and makes considerable use of his unpublished manuscripts. It is the most systematic study yet of this central doctrine of Collingwood's philosophy of history, and will stand as a landmark in Collingwood studies. 'For many years William Dray has been working at the task of retrieving Collingwood for contemporary philosophy. . . . It is something of an event then to have this new work, the culmination of a lifetime of thought, appear in his retirement. As one would expect, it is a deeply considered book, lucidly written, and scrupulously fair to all parties . . . a sound and serious philosophical commentary . . . anyone interested in either Collingwood or the philosophy of history should consider joining the dialogue and will learn much in the process.' Race and Nation: Ethnic Systems in the Modern World
Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0415950031 |
Book Description
Race and Nation is the first book to compare the racial and ethnic systems that have developed around the world. It is the creation of nineteen scholars who are experts on locations as far-flung as China, Jamaica, Eritrea, Brazil, Germany, Punjab, and South Africa. The contributing historians, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and scholars of literary and cultural studies have engaged in an ongoing conversation, honing a common set of questions that dig to the heart of racial and ethnic groups and systems.
Guided by those questions, they have created the first book that explores the similarities, differences, and the relationships among the ways that race and ethnicity have worked in the modern world. In so doing they have created a model for how to write world history that is detailed in its expertise, yet also manages broad comparisons.

Chaos and the Evolving Ecological Universe (The World Futures General Evolution Studies)
Sally Goerner Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 2881246354 |
Book Description
Chaos is part of a broad scientific revolution that is uncovering the role of interdependence in shaping the world at all levels from the molecular to the societal. But this science is part of a yet larger cultural revolution, the emergence of a vision of the world as a deeply interdependent evolving ecology. In this powerful book, Sally Goerner strives to make the broader revolution, science and sociology, understandable. She provides a concrete and coherent picture of the science from chaos and self-organization theory to Gaia and the New Biology and then ties it to visions of ecology and evolution in the broader human realm. The result is a breathtaking birds-eye view of a new and profound form of ecological thinking emerging at once from the head and heart of our culture.
