      Book Description

Even as lawsuits challenging its admissions policies made their way through the courts, the University of Michigan carried the torch for affirmative action in higher education.
In June 2003, the Supreme Court vindicated UM's position on affirmative action when it ruled that race may be used as a factor for universities in their admissions programs, thus confirming what the UM had argued all along: diversity in the classroom translates to a beneficial and wide-ranging social value. With the green light given to the law school's admissions policies, Defending Diversity validates the positive benefits gained by students in a diverse educational setting.
Written by prominent University of Michigan faculty, Defending Diversity is a timely response to the court's ruling. Providing factual background, historical setting, and the psychosocial implications of affirmative action, the book illuminates the many benefits of a diverse higher educational setting -- including preparing students to be full participants in a pluralistic democracy -- and demonstrates why affirmative action is necessary to achieve that diversity.
Defending Diversity is a significant contribution to the ongoing discussion on affirmative action in higher education. Perhaps more important, it is a valuable record of the history, events, arguments, and issues surrounding the original lawsuits and the Supreme Court's subsequent ruling, and helps reclaim the debate from those forces opposed to affirmative action.
Patricia Gurin is Professor Emerita, Department of Psychology, University of Michigan. Jeffrey S. Lehman, former Dean of the University of Michigan Law School, is President of Cornell University. Earl Lewis is Dean of Rackham Graduate School, University of Michigan.

          Book Description

This volume presents a comprehensive review of the current research in the field of primate thinking, learning and behavioural development. Recent theories of the ways in which primates perceive their world are integrated with the ways that they behave and communicate about each other and their environment. Many different species in both the wild and in captivity are discussed with coverage from the social development of neonates to the behaviour of adults. The common theme to the contributions is an attempt to understand how primates perceive, learn about and manipulate their social and physical environment.

Provides an introduction to the complex chemistry of heterocycles and an overview of the many and varied applications of this versatile class of compounds. The only book to examine the multidisciplinary applications of heterocycles, it features descriptions of the impact of heterocyclic compounds in living organisms: in the structure of DNA, enzymes and proteins, vitamins and antibodies and their role in plants and animals. The use of the compounds in the chemical industry is also covered. It is written in non-technical language by top researchers and includes problems at the end of each chapter.

            Book Description

Why are leaves green and blood red? The answer lies with one family of pigments, the porphyrins and their relatives. These pigments are also responsible for the fundamental energetic processes that make life as we know it possible. The properties of these colorful molecules are now being
investigated for use in a wide range of applications, from cancer therapy to microelectronics. The Colours of Life is intended to be an introduction to the porphyrins and their role in life.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This is perhaps the only current text on porphyrins........1998-07-20

This is perhaps the only current textbook on porphyrins, most other books being severely outdated. I use this book to provide my graduate students a quick introduction to porphyrin chemistry. The book's main strength, in my opinion, is that it places comparable amounts of emphasis on chemical and biological aspects. Regarding the chemical aspects (at least), I would have preferred a somewhat more advanced level, that would have allowed a bit more detailed and rigorous discussions on, say, synthesis, metalloporphyrin electronic structure, etc. Thus, I feel that a special topic course on porphyrin chemistry could not be primarily based on this book, but this book certainly deserves being on the required reading list. The book is fun to read. There are no other recent books covering the same subject. It's certainly a worthwhile purchase for anyone with more than a passing interest in porphyrin chemistry.

Atom-probe field ion microscopy is currently the only technique capable of imaging solid surfaces with atomic resolution, and at the same time of chemically analyzing surface atoms selected by the observer from the field ion image. Field ion microscopy has been successfully used to study most metals and many alloys, and recently good field ion images of some semiconductors and even ceramic materials such as high temperature superconductors have been obtained. Although other microscopies are capable of achieving the same resolution, there are some experiments unique to field ion microscopy--for example the study of the behavior of single atoms and clusters on a solid surface. The very elegant development of the field ion microscope with the atom-probe has provided a powerful and useful technique for highly sensitive chemical analysis. This book presents the basic principles of atom-probe field ion microscopy and illustrates the various capabilities of the technique in the study of solid surfaces and interfaces at atomic resolution.

Herman Melville's brilliant works remain vital and provocative for their dark ebullience and visionary power. The sweep of his writings-encompassing ferocious social satire, agonized reflection, and formal experimentation-is represented in this comprehensive edition. Here are Melville's masterpieces: Moby-Dick in its entirety; Billy Budd; "Bartleby, The Scrivener"; "The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles"; the essay "Hawthorne and His Mosses"; and 21 poems, including "The House-top," an anguished response to the New York draft riots.

                              3 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Melville's works.......2005-07-28

Although this book should not be called a complete volume, it is rather a collection of Melville's writings, it provides a enjoyable and interesting introduction to one of the most impressive american writers of the 19th century. It contains a real classic - the novel Moby Dick - and some novellas from The Piazza Tales, such as "Bartleby, The Scrivener" (in my opinion, Melville's masterpiece), "Benito Cereno" and "Billy Budd, the Saylor". There is at least a big surprise inside: the essay "Hawthorne and His Mosses", a text from the youth, but full of insights about Melville's friend, Nathanael Hawthorne. A fantastic gift, like most of Library of America editions.

                              5 out of 5 stars best one-volume melville?.......2001-12-23

After a lot of browsing among different editions of Melville's works, I chose this one because it was attractive and cheap and contained all of his acknowledged masterpieces. Getting "Moby-Dick," "Billy Budd," and his greatest short stories and poems in one well-made volume, for ($$$) bucks, is indeed a pretty good deal. I wish Library of America would start commissioning some scholarly introductions for their books, though. Their volumes seem to be geared towards intelligent people who are not necessarily experts in a particular field, and it would be useful to provide an introduction that places the works in context and gives a brief idea of the latest scholarship.

There is a "Note on the Texts" here, which is really of interest only to specialists, and a chronology of Melville's life, and some rather random and cursory endnotes: there are only a few pages' worth for "Moby-Dick," for example, which could be annotated much more extensively (and I'm sure it has been). It's unclear why the editors choose to explain some of Melville's allusions but not others. So if you're looking for a well-annotated "Moby-Dick," look elsewhere.

As for the works themselves, there's little I could say about them that hasn't been said a thousand times before. Every one of Melville's lines crackle with dark intensity; his writing is relentless, wild, eccentric, sometimes out of control, but even then it's a pleasure to follow him on his fiery way. His is a kind of uniquely American tragic sense, the dark flip side of Emerson and Whitman's democratic individualism. Ahab, and Bartleby, are supreme individualists, but their uncompromised visions lead to doom rather than liberation.

5 out of 5 stars The Great American Novel.......2000-10-12

"Moby-Dick" stands out as the great American novel. Billy Budd, written much later, stands as a sober counterpoint. Taken together, Melville's many-layered texts deconstruct western civ (American variety) in the same way that Homer did for the Greeks. From Melville to Madonna-see how we run.

                                Book Description

A central motif of R. G. Collingwood's philosophy of history is the idea that historical understanding requires a re-enactment of past experience. However, there have been sharp disagreements about the acceptability of this idea, and even its meaning. This book aims to advance the critical discussion in three ways: by analysing the idea itself further, concentrating especially on the contrast which Collingwood drew between it and scientific understanding; by exploring the limits of its applicability to what historians ordinarily consider their proper subject-matter; and by clarifying the relationship between it and some other key Collingwoodian ideas, such as the place of imagination in historical inquiry, the sense in which history deals with the individual, the essential perspectivity of historical judgement, and the importance of narrative and periodization in historical thinking. Professor Dray defends Collingwood against a good deal of recent criticism, while pointing to ways in which his position requires revision or development. History as Re-enactment draws upon a wide range of Collingwood's published writings, and makes considerable use of his unpublished manuscripts. It is the most systematic study yet of this central doctrine of Collingwood's philosophy of history, and will stand as a landmark in Collingwood studies. 'For many years William Dray has been working at the task of retrieving Collingwood for contemporary philosophy. . . . It is something of an event then to have this new work, the culmination of a lifetime of thought, appear in his retirement. As one would expect, it is a deeply considered book, lucidly written, and scrupulously fair to all parties . . . a sound and serious philosophical commentary . . . anyone interested in either Collingwood or the philosophy of history should consider joining the dialogue and will learn much in the process.' Race and Nation is the first book to compare the racial and ethnic systems that have developed around the world. It is the creation of nineteen scholars who are experts on locations as far-flung as China, Jamaica, Eritrea, Brazil, Germany, Punjab, and South Africa. The contributing historians, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and scholars of literary and cultural studies have engaged in an ongoing conversation, honing a common set of questions that dig to the heart of racial and ethnic groups and systems.
Guided by those questions, they have created the first book that explores the similarities, differences, and the relationships among the ways that race and ethnicity have worked in the modern world. In so doing they have created a model for how to write world history that is detailed in its expertise, yet also manages broad comparisons.

                                      Book Description

Chaos is part of a broad scientific revolution that is uncovering the role of interdependence in shaping the world at all levels from the molecular to the societal. But this science is part of a yet larger cultural revolution, the emergence of a vision of the world as a deeply interdependent evolving ecology. In this powerful book, Sally Goerner strives to make the broader revolution, science and sociology, understandable. She provides a concrete and coherent picture of the science from chaos and self-organization theory to Gaia and the New Biology and then ties it to visions of ecology and evolution in the broader human realm. The result is a breathtaking birds-eye view of a new and profound form of ecological thinking emerging at once from the head and heart of our culture.

This book was a challenge and a delight to read. So many current ideas challenging thinkers the world over, and emerging across sectors and disciplines, were placed in context and explained in memorable ways. More important, the book was as inspiring to the reader as the author seemed inspired by her explorations that led to the book. Bravo! It ought to be necessary reading for those responsible for leading people from this milenium into the next, and all others who want to appreciate their place in history at this particular moment in time...Sally Goerner illuminates human thought and the greater creative universe on all sides, with balance. Thank you.

Caught between underdevelopment, poverty and environmental degradation, along with the need for exploiting its natural resources for development, Africa has, during the last two decades, been engaged in a serious effort to integrate environment and development. The nine case studies presented in this book explore the complexity involved in environmental planning and policy in one of the world's poorest regions. The authors articulate an informed debate, with new conclusions and alternative policy recommendations.
