If you work in agricultural development, and you own only one book, this should be it. Very dense and practical, including much information on design of land improvements. Accurate and up-tp-date. You could almost start a consulting company with this book alone.

Completely incomplete.......2005-01-16

It's amazing how 195 pages can contain information about all wild foods (of North America?) complete with descriptions and from field identification to its uses to the kitchen. Makes no mention of ethical harvesting (photos of ginseng and her stories of the market price of ginseng actually work against the spirit of wild foods) nor warnings of poisonous lookalikes (rendering the book dangerous). Never to be bought or caught holding a copy, so please be discreet if you want to find out for yourself in a library or bookstore.

This book presents the fundamentals of novel gate dielectrics that are being introduced into semiconductor manufacturing to ensure the continuous scaling of CMOS devices. As this is a rapidly evolving field of research we choose to focus on the materials that determine the performance of device applications. Most of these materials are transition metal oxides. Ironically, the d-orbitals responsible for the high dielectric constant cause severe integration difficulties, thus intrinsically limiting high-k dielectrics. Though new in the electronics industry many of these materials are well-known in the field of ceramics, and we describe this unique connection. The complexity of the structure-property relations in TM oxides requires the use of state-of-the-art first-principles calculations. Several chapters give a detailed description of the modern theory of polarization, and heterojunction band discontinuity within the framework of the density functional theory. Experimental methods include oxide melt solution calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, Raman scattering and other optical characterization techniques, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Many of the problems encountered in the world of CMOS are also relevant for other semiconductors such as GaAs. A comprehensive review of recent developments in this field is thus also given. The book will be of interest to those actively engaged in gate dielectric research, and to graduate students in Materials Science, Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, and Electrical Engineering.

Doesn't Stand On Its Own.......2003-04-11

It may be good for a university classroom, but I don't think this book works well on its own. It lacks the details that would really make clear the significance of the people and events and leave them in the memory. I was even bored by the section on the Cultural Revolution! But I did learn a fair bit nonetheless.

Good introduction for students and curious general readers.......2000-02-15

The purposes of Dietrich's book should be kept in mind. The book is not a detailed scholarly book and does not pretend to be. It is, however, a fair-minded and useful introduction to the PRC's history for students at the beginning undergraduate level. Students and China buffs must begin somewhere, after all, and Dietrich's book is as good as any (and much better than many) for this purpose. I have happily used the book for introductory classes I have taught in major U.S. and Canadian universities.

naive, simplistic, and general.......1999-02-10

Mr. Dietrich, whatever his academic credentials, joins the ranks of many a China scholar that so romantasizes China that careful research and balance are rejected. This book is so hopelessly simplistic and over-generalized that its almost useless; documentation is almost non-existent, and his analysis of the events of modern China are reduced to a 6th grade level with scant detail and almost no evidence. The "achievements" of the communists in China are very romanticized and if one wishes to really understand the last 50 years of China's history, this book is not the way. Save your money!
