Including an in-depth analysis of the affordability crisis, a detailed encapsulation of the public-versus-private responsibility to pay for higher education debate and its historic roots, and the theoretical studies of student aid and the tax code, the book develops concrete definitions of the various types of tax-advantaged college savings plans, their origin and development and a detailed taxonomy of all such state-sponsored programs in the United States. Unique to this book, the taxonomy is based upon detailed State Profiles of all tax-advantaged college savings plans in existence circa 1999. Building upon the State Profiles and their taxonomic summary, the book analyzes the rhetoric of the documents surrounding each state's program's adoption in order to understand what the state's say such programs mean. Further, each program's characteristics are evaluated against a Continuum of "Publicness" in order to ascertain the state's position regarding the public-versus-private responsibility debate. The results is both a rhetorical and behavioral data set documenting the states' policy position elevating solving the challenge of middle-class affordability above the issues of access and equity. Although the concept of "publicness" is discovered to be highly ambiguous, the book concludes with a Best Practices description of an ideal tax-advantaged college savings plan that maximizes public responsibility to pay for higher education. Such a program will be of great interest to all policy analysts and public officials concerned about maintaining the historic American commitment to access and equity.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Tree and Leaf is still more of Tolkien in the mode of historian, and
Tolkien in the mode of poet. The Homecoming of Beorthnoth is perhaps
the best part of this book. Again, only to be recommended for those who
like that sort of detail, his style, and poetry, otherwise not very
many will be interested if just fans of his major fantasy adventures.

A great short story.......2007-05-11

I liked Tolkien's other books (Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Silmarillion), but he can get long-winded when describing things. Leaf by Niggle is great because Tolkien limits his descriptions to only what is necessary to advance the stories, and it is beautiful and short. I didn't so much appreciate the essay 'On Fairy Stories' but the book is worth it just for Leaf.

Paperback, not hardcover!.......2003-10-06

I ordered this book used from fivedollarbooks (aka Candlewood), and returned when I saw it was a paperback. Condition was satisfactory, but I wanted hardcover specifically. The seller gave me a full refund, even refunded all shipping. After a month, Amazon still has not corrected the description above. Check with the seller to be sure you are getting the edition you want.

There is a hardcover version available from Amazon, but it does not include Mythopoeia.

Regarding the content, wow! "Leaf by Niggle" alone is priceless. Like Niggle's leaf is to a forest, so this story is to Tolkien's larger works: smaller, but not lesser.

insight in this creation.......2002-10-28

This is a beautiful book. Reading through it, the intentions of Tolkien are revealed. It makes all of the stories of middle earth more real, tangable, comforting. It can be read and reread; each time more layers, more connections are made. Tolkien confronts reality of fantasy in this essay and poem. He justifies our human need for subcreation, and comfort in art.

Christian mystical I Ching.......2004-08-15

I use both Eastern interpretation of the I Ching and the Christian mystical approach contained in here for deeper understanding. This one, in particular, speaks to my own heart and has helped me the most. I have had it for many years, use it regularly and feel grateful to the author for writing it. Thank you.

A positive Western perspective on our old friend.......2004-06-09

I found a copy at the thrift store. It's on my desk now. I use a desktop PC to 'cast coins', then flip to this edition. It's been my fav for a couple of months now.
This edition provides interpretations based on Biblical reflections of the images in the I Ching. If you have ever fallen in love with God, you will like how Murphy couches every interpretation as an opportunity to turn it over to God, return to God, seek inspiration from God, trust God's wisdom. He does this for each and every line of every hexagram. Using this approach constitutes a great contribution to the I Ching genre and a huge achievment in synthesis.

Valuable Information on the I-Ching.......2002-02-10

I agree with the previous reviewer. The beginning of the book provides a wonderful explanation of the I-Ching and how to cast coins and read. However, the biblical references provided for interpretation are somewhat vague. I highly recommend for anyone interested in learning about the I-Ching. I prefer to use to The Everyday I Ching, Sarah Dening, for hexagram interpretation.

The I Ching from a Western point of view...............2000-12-20

This book has much to recommend it. The strongest chapters are the first few, in which Murphy gives the background of the I Ching and talks about synchronicity and the linkage between the subconscious and universal minds. His description of how to consult the oracle (using pennies) is very clear and easy for any novice to understand. As far as his view of the I Ching goes, he sees it as being closely connected in spirit with Western metaphysical thinking. The entire second half of the book comprises the interpretations of the hexagrams, using biblical passages instead of the original Chinese judgements and images. For me this doesn't really work, as most of Murphy's biblically based interpretations are far too general to have much application. Like the newspaper horoscopes, with imagination they could be interpreted any old way.

Thus, if you are a purist who wants a translation of the I Ching which most closely follows the Chinese version, I would not recommend this. I would instead go with the Wilhelm/Barnes version published by Bollingen--this is the translation Jung used and it's very good reading in and of itself. However, for learning to use the I Ching, Murphy's book is a fine introduction.

Loved this book.......2000-10-29

I am a fan of Joseph Murphy. His books have helped me this past year more than any other to create my future and understand that I need to control my thoughts. This book is my first I Ching book. It is well written and easy to understand. I find that when I ask a question, the answer easily goes to the topic at hand and of course helps me to heal my mind in that area, besides helps me choose a course of action. This is a good first book.

This book is an interpretation and, as such, must simply be "trusted" as one.
But as a book to be read and used - it is simple, direct and very very clear. I completely love it. The writing is concise and brief. The illustrations are interesting and supportive. Its perfect.

Plum Blossom.......2005-01-12

A sort of fortune teller's I Ching, this book is based on the very effective Plum Blossom method of Shao Yong, the Sung dynasty philosopher. The book is a typical Lillian Too visual production, not entirely to my taste, but it has interesting information some of which is original. There are other books on the Plum Blossom method and fortune teller's I Ching that compare favorably with this one, especially The Tao of I Ching by Jou Tsung Hwa, and the now out of print books by W.K.Chu and W.A.Sherrill, Anthology of I Ching and The Astrology of I Ching. There is another book that contains an effective I Ching predictive method based on Chinese astrology, Feng Shui Strategies for Business Success. Be all that as it may, this book is well worth purchasing by anyone interested in the many possibilities of working with the I Ching. I would give it 5 Stars except I don't like the pictures, sorry.

Great recipes.......2005-08-08

I just bought this book and tried two recipes this weekend, an endive salad with pears and gorgonzola and the minestrone soup. Both were delicious and fool proof, and I can't wait to start trying more. There's a large variety of recipes that covers entire meals with plenty suggestions to use seasonal ingredients. There are recipes for classics and new dishes, from simple to elaborate and elegant. There's not a picture of everything (unfortunately), but the pictures present are very inspiring. Paper quality could have been better, but I'm still thrilled with this book.

Exactly what I Expected.......2003-07-20

I liked the 2002 book better, but this one is great, too. Tried some of the recipes, and no problems there. The recipes range from simple to extravagant and there's something for any occasion or taste. Also a beautiful book to add to a cookbook collection. This book has convenient conversion chart in the back unlike last year.

One of my most utilized cookbooks.......2003-06-25

This cookbooks provides you with the recipes from the entire year of Marta Stewart Living magazines. Since I have used many of those recipes from her magazine, I found having them all compiled in one volume much more convenient (even though I have every issue the book covers).

For rave reviews, try the guacamole recipe. It is by far the top requested item for me to bring to a gathering!

Overall, a great book.

This cookbook's tantalizing recipes and mouthwatering photos are irresistable. It even inspired my husband to cook something other than linguine for the first time. Last night, he successfully followed the recipe for mint and pistachio leg of lamb and it was flawless. Thank you Martha for bringing divine meals from another universe to our home in this gorgeous and accessible cookbook . It has everything I could ever want to eat and hopefully everything my husband wants to cook! Tonight, cornflake-encrusted chicken!

Did not work for me.......2003-01-08

I tried to prepare a few dinners using this and the meals tasted lousy. I think she lost her touch due to her ethical and legal problems. There are better boooks out there.
