Customer Reviews:
The only book you need to buy or sell a business.......2003-08-12
If you are buying or selling a business, or just want to know the value of your company, this is the only book you need. I read several others, but this covers everything they do and in more detail, plus it's all in one book. The purchase agreements are excellent. The book is very detailed. After reading it you know exactly what to do. But I did not find it boring or hard to follow at all.
Great detail, but not for beginners.......2003-03-22
I'll agree with some the other reviewers that this book has a lot of valuable information, especially relating to business valuation techniques and contracts and forms. But it's almost too detailed! If you are a first-time buyer and want to get an overview of the process and increase your comfort level, it's practically worthless. In fact, it's worse than that...it will probably scare you away. It's also very densely written and dry in some parts...so it could bore you away too! I'm a first time buyer, and that was my experience -- I absolutely could not get through this book. Then I went on to read Smorenburg, and "Mancuso's Small Business Basics" and things became much clearer. I wish I had started with one of these other books. Then, when you want detailed checklists, legal language, and valuation formulas, turn back to this book (although you'll probably want to turn to an attorney and accountant first).
I've read several on the topic but buy this book.......2002-04-18
Highly recommended! I have read several books on the topic and have bought/sold my own businesses. This is a very good book, and may be the only one you need to buy (the only other additional book would be a more detailed review on valuation). It is complete, crisp, easy to read, has many good ideas on creative financing, good sample douments, handy checklists etc. I also have read Yegge's book "A Basic Guide on Buying and Selling .." which wanders too much and is verbose - don't buy it. Smorenburg's " Business Buyers Kit" is good, but not as comprehensive as this book.
A great resource........2002-02-28
This is a fantastic book. Incredibly insightful. A must
for anyone considering buying a business. Mr. Gabehart is
brillant! Bravo!
Exceptionally Practical.......2000-08-31
Of the many books available in this area, this one stands out due to its abundance of practical insights and forms, sample contracts, worksheets, spreadsheets, etc.
As it covers the processes involved from both a buyer and seller point of view, the insights are extremely useful. The valuation chapters cut through the theoretical overkill of many similar books and provide the reader with a practical yet substantial overview of business valuation.
Excellent book!

Book Description
This handbook is a companion to Agricultural Insect Pests of the Tropics and their Control (2nd Edition 1983) and, like the earlier book, it is designed as a source of reference about most of the major insect and mite pests of agricultural crops. These two volumes by the same author now present a world-wide coverage of the economically important insect pests of tropical and temperate agriculture. Students taking courses in entomology, agriculture, crop pest biology and crop protection, and professional workers concerned with identification and control of insect pests, will find this comprehensive account an indispensable handbook and source of reference.

Book Description
Continuing the exceptional tradition of the previous editions, Quantum Mechanics, Fourth Edition provides essential information about atomic and subatomic systems and covers some modern applications of the field. Supported by a Web page that contains a bibliography, color versions of some of the illustrations, and links to other relevant sites, the book shows how cutting-edge research topics of quantum mechanics have been applied to various disciplines. It first demonstrates how to obtain a wave equation whose solutions determine the energy levels of bound systems. The theory is then made more general and applied to a number of physical examples. Later chapters describe the connection between relativity and quantum mechanics, give some examples of how quantum mechanics has been used in information processing, and, finally, discuss the conceptual and philosophical implications of the subject. New to the Fourth Edition: · A chapter on quantum information processing that includes applications to the encryption and de-encryption of coded messages · A chapter on relativistic quantum mechanics and introductory quantum field theory · Updated material on the conceptual foundations of quantum physics containing discussions of non-locality, hidden variables, and parallel universes · Expanded information on tunneling microscopy and the Bose-Einstein condensate Presenting up-to-date information on the conceptual and philosophical aspects of quantum mechanics, this revised edition is suitable both for undergraduates studying physics, chemistry, or mathematics and for researchers involved in quantum physics.

Book Description
This invaluable textbook presents the basic elements needed to understand and research into semiconductor physics. It deals with elementary excitations in bulk and low-dimensional semiconductors, including quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots. The basic principles underlying optical nonlinearities are developed, including excitonic and many-body plasma effects. Fundamentals of optical bistability, semiconductor lasers, femtosecond excitation, the optical Stark effect, the semiconductor photon echo, magneto-optic effects, as well as bulk and quantum-confined Franz-Keldysh effects, are covered. The material is presented in sufficient detail for graduate students and researchers with a general background in quantum mechanics.
Customer Reviews:
Good one time reading........2005-01-13
The book is truly a required reading for anyone, who wants to work in the field of semiconductor opticas. The choice of topics and the presentation are excellent. However, the book does not go really deep in any of the topics, therefore I doubt that anyone will read this book more than once or use it as a reference.
Some topic and, especially, equations may seem too overused in later books and review papers, but apparently this book was the first to present them and here they are truly enlightening.

Excelente libro!.......2002-05-12
Read it slowly.......2001-05-30
....Reading this book you realise the big distance between "exciting" to "amazing". And I have to say that I have been amazed. This is the first book I ever read of Günter Grass and his style left me speechless. There are (many) paragraphs that I re-read several times, not because of difficulties in understanding, but because of the undescriptable sensation I got. But style is not the only memorable issue here. Seeing the world through Oskar's eyes makes you feel as if you were loking at yourself, being convinced that stupidness became so usual that you cannot distinguish it anymore. Of course you will not like it if you are a fan of, let's say, Michael Crichton... This would be like comparing Beethoven with the Spice Girls!...
Book Description
In 1775 Milford traveled from France to America. He spent much of this time in the Carolinas among the Creek Indians, becoming a member of the Creek Confederacy, eventually rising to Grand War Chief, commander of all Creek forces. Rather than fight in the American Revolution, Milford led 200 warriors on an expedition to search for the origin of the Creek people. Milford eventually returned to France to participate in the French Revolution. Details are unfiltered: consider his accounts of the "Drunken One-Eyed Gougers" of the Carolinas, and the Choctaw divorce ceremony.

In Pythagoras' Trousers, science writer and feminist Margaret Wertheim took an astute look at the social and cultural history of physics. She explored how the development of physics became intertwined with the rising power of institutionalized religion, and how both of these predominantly masculine pursuits have influenced women's ability to join the physics community. Now she has turned her attention to virtual reality, looking at similarities between how we view it today and how art and religion was viewed in medieval times. Her assertion is that rather than carrying us forward into new and fabulous other worlds, virtual reality is actually carrying us backwards--to essentially medieval dreams. Beginning with the medieval view, with its definition of the world as spiritual space, Wertheim traces the emergence of modern physics' emphasis on physical space. She then presents her thesis: that cyberspace, which is an outgrowth of modern science, posits the existence of a genuine yet immaterial world in which people are invited to commune in a nonbodily fashion, just as medieval theology brought intangible souls together in heaven. The perfect realm awaits, we are told, not behind the pearly gates but the electronic gateways labeled .com and .net. How did we get from seeing ourselves in soul space (the world of Dante and the late medievals) to seeing ourselves as purely in body space (the world of Newton and Einstein)? This crucial transition and the new shift propelled by the Internet are convincingly described in this challenging book.
Book Description
Cyberspace may seem an unlikely gateway for the soul. But as science commentator Margaret Wertheim argues in this "marvelously provocative" (Kirkus Reviews) book, cyberspace has in recent years become a repository for immense spiritual yearning. Wertheim explores the mapping of spiritual desire onto digitized space and suggests that the modem today has become a metaphysical escape-hatch from a materialism that many people find increasingly dissatisfying. Cyberspace opens up a collective space beyond the laws of physics--a space where mind rather than matter reigns. This strange refuge returns us to an almost medieval dualism between a physical space of body and an immaterial space of mind and psyche.
Customer Reviews:
Pearly Gates Redux.......2006-06-15
I am the author of this book and I would like to agree with the gist of many of the reviews here. The first half of the book - which traces the cultural history of Western concepts of space - is the real meat of the text and is by far the strongest part. The final part of the book, which deals with cyberspace, is weak by comparison. Actually when I wrote the book, I only wanted to write the first part, with a final short and tentative reflection on the then emerging realm of cyberspace. But the publisher - who thought cyberspace was a hip topic - pressed me to make cyberspace a bigger part of the exercise. I too feel that these final chapters have to a large degree been superceded by the development of the Net since 2000. But the real story of the book is the first 5 chapters which trace a critical transition in Western culture's conception of what it means to be a human embedded in a wider spatial scheme. It is this part of the book - which the European reviewers especially praised - that stands as the real achievement and that I would still urge apon readers.
Half an interesting read.......2006-03-25
The first near-half of this books was fascinating: an analysis of how the concept of "space" developed in the West as Europe moved from the medieval era and into the Renaissance. Wertheim examines the concept of space as perceived through the art, science, and philosophies of the era in enough depth have been worth the read, if not as much depth as one might desire.
The second half is something of a loss. The chapters on 20th-century science read like nothing more than a condensed re-hash of most popular physics books of the last 10 years. The final chapters -- where we reach the long-promised "cyberspace" -- say nothing more than her introduction: that there are similarities between utopian visions of the digital future and the Christian conception of heaven. Similarities between a utopia and heaven? Not exactly a shocking thesis and even less shocking as a conclusion.
Virtual Religion.......2004-12-09
virtual connections to the holy space traced in this historic survey is an interesting perspective worth reading.
Great title, but ..........2000-10-14
I certainly enjoyed reading this book, and found some of the material in the earlier chapters very interesting, for example, about the development of the theory of perspective in art.
However,I felt that the bridge into the cyberspace stuff was rather strained and unconvincing. Certainly, the whole internet thing is of great significance to human development, but it didn't seem to fit comfortably into the space that Wertheim wants to put it.
Pearly Gates of Cyberspace full of fuzzy thinking.......2000-09-21
Even if the world needed a book on this theme, this is not the one!
One thread of this book is the notion of collision between scientific thinking and theology--a collision which in my view is not forced by anything observable or reasonably thinkable.
In early chapters, the author makes dogmatic statements about what was on the minds of numerous famous authors--statements for which no justification is given, and for thoughts which arguably have milder and more flattering interpretations: e.g., that Dante and other mediaevals took a certain spatial view of heaven and hell literally. In this case, the milder interpretation might recognize that writing anything likely to offend certain Churchmen risked persecution--so that what authors expressed might often left out subtle and careful thinking.
The chapters on what's going on since the mid-1980's read like a journalist's hasty pastiche of things written and thought by others, with little acknowledgement and even less discernable new thought.
However, my main objection is that this author has set up a flimsy strawman to knock down with many words, viz., that the coincidence of the syllable "space" in "cyberspace" implies a serious analogy to metric spaces. This analogy might play a roll in hoi poloi minds, but that Wertheim's middle chapters talk of the work of several well-known scientists seems to imply that serious scientists take such an analogy seriously. In many years of listening to scientific colleagues, I heard nothing to suggest such a view.
In contrast, Wertheim ignores all social thinking that is a reasonable precursor to today's views and actions around cyberspace. Recall the notion that "a university is a community centered on a library", and many, many related works about how communities work and about domains of ideas.
Furthermore, in discussing science Wertheim ignores the most important factor that drove philosophical and scientific thinkers to their views of metric spaces--symmetry and simple forms in differential equations.
On the positive side, I learned a few obscure and very interesting names--those of thinkers before their time. E.g., Nicolas of Cusa (13th century), Kaluza (19th century). I'll dig into those.
Summary: for any careful thinker, this book is a distraction and waste of time.

Space, Place, Location: a new Somewhere.......2007-09-23
Looking at the price of this book, it is happily ironic that I received it as a gift from my father-in-law, who picked it up for free at a book fair when his public library withdrew it from circulation.
This is not a gee-whiz "marvels of technology" book. Nor is it a theology textbook. It is more of a sociology-psychology-of-perspective book... hard to explain, but one of the best academic works to help a person understand the changes in human thinking over the centuries, and how contemporary Westerners unconsciously perceive space, location, and even identity.
When I say it like that, it makes it sound dry and academic. It is not. Her writing style is engaging and interesting, and the whole thing reads like a novel.
Wertheim begins by focusing mostly on art and its development through ancient cultures and then limits herself mostly to Western culture (otherwise the book would be a thousand pages), because it is through art that you can see how a people understands space, distance, perspective, etc. They paint or sculpt things to appear the way they perceive them in their minds. Absolutely fascinating: that art-history section alone is worth the price of the whole book.
After she gets to the scientific revolution, she focuses more on science and physics than on art, because science took over the shaping of our understanding of space and perspective. Wertheim gives the best layman's description of the major discoveries in physics that I've ever read. I like that sort of thing: Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, even though I'm not a scientist, theories that describe how reality works have always fascinated me. Problem was, I did not really understand them very well. Until now.
I still can't do the math, but I know the story behind each of those discoveries, and I "get it"-- the ideas and concepts behind the scientific notation. When my son gets older, I'm going to read through that latter part of the book with him, so he'll understand why Nicola Tesla is not just important on a test someday, but a fascinating person who discovered fascinating things that changed the way we understand reality... and there are dozens more gripping stories of intrigue, loyalty, betrayal, brilliance, happy accidents... I am so glad I have it.
Of course, she does get to the Cyberspace section eventually, in which she revisits art, combines it with cosmology, religion, design, architecture, pop psych, internet communication and community, and web design, to reveal some unexpected insights into the promise of cyberspace and how THAT is altering our reality in very real ways... and you don't even have to be online to be altered by it. Don't worry, she'll explain it beautifully.
By the way, I have the older edition (1999? 2001?), hardcover, white and greyish sort of cover photo, of buildings stretching toward the sky. It's packed away in a box right now or I'd describe it better. She may have updated the content along with the cover, in which case I'd have to put it on my wish list!
If you can't afford to buy this book, look for it in a local library and check it out. Definitely worth a read, and it will stretch your brain.
On the other hand, your brain is already being stretched without your knowledge, as society evolves... wouldn't you like to know what's happening to you?
