Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide!!.......2005-08-19
We were considering a trip through Yellowstone and Idaho when our family gave this book to us. We are definitely going to both and can hardly wait!
The book is written very well. The author manages to illustrate Idaho's rich history and must-see stops in such a way that it does not read like a typical, dull atlas or encyclopedia. The Ultimate Idaho Atlas and Travel Encyclopedia is enjoyable to read and easy to navigate. We highly recommend this book!
A wealth of information!.......2005-08-18
I recently returned from a motorcycle trip that included Idaho and wish I would have had this awesome book before I left. It would have been a wonderful guide for touring this beautiful state. Speaking of beautiful, the word also describes much of the photography in this book. No matter where your interests lie, The Ultimate Idaho Atlas and Travel Encyclopedia can help you locate it.
While many travel books read like an encyclopedia, this one does not. The style used by the author in this book has a way of grabbing and keeping your interest. Her sense of humor becomes apparent in many of the sidebar articles that provide a perspective of Idaho's landscape and people from the past and present.
If Idaho was for sale, this book could get it sold!

Little Snippets of Pirate Lore--Literally........2006-07-27
This tiny volume has a surprising amount of information packed into its 3.25x4.625 inch pages. It starts with a chronology covering the various periods of pirates over the years, starting with The Sea Peoples of c. 1200 b.c. and ends with pirates from the Indonesian area. Between those you'll find Medieval pirates, Caribbean pirates, French corsairs and many, many more.
Moving on to part two we have little snippets of infamous pirates like Mary Read and the Barbarossa Brothers.
Part Three involves ships: types, flags, equipment, maps, weapons and more.
Part Four describes the pirate life: a dose of reality (what life was really like for them, not what the movies potray) the code, dress, treasure, the reasons behind the term "scurvey knave" and much more.
Part Five tells of the era of pirate hunters and the end of the vast pirate pillaging section of history, including trials and executions.
Part Six is an overview of pirates in literature and film and even a little on modern day piracy and wrecked pirate ships found over the years.
The information is presented in a very factual textbook-like way and could potentially be a great little starting resource for those looking for information on piracy. There's even a glossary of nautical terms in the back. Beware of the size I mentioned above. This be it's only drawback, gaarrr...Other than that, I felt the price was a little steep for something so small, but when you crack open its minute pages, you too will probably be surprised at much info there is to be had here. It does make for an easily transportable book. Being so small too, there is not much room for pictures, so don't expect every detail to have an image to go along with it. Now, just don't lose it on the shelf with all your giant books and you have an easy, quick guide on hand.

small and limited.......2007-02-15
I think this little book is of no use at all. It is too small, the maps are miniatures and it has very, very little info if at all on countries. I very much recommend the Collins atlas which is a little bit bigger.

Too limited.......2004-04-30
Not that good. It is too limited for learning. It may be serve as a memory support. If that is what you are looking for, then it is OK.
even if you don't know it--it's indispensable!.......2000-06-05
Extraordinarily handy little booklet. While in the beginning-intermediate stages of learning Spanish, I carried it in my breastpocket at all times. At the start, I went through the discussion and examples--that's the best part of the book, the to-the-point examples--not really understanding everything, but getting a good overview. As I worked through other sources and got better, the book became indispensable for its clear treatment of, first, the basic grammatical structure, and, second, irregularities and idioms that commonly arise.
If you're serious about learning Spanish, this book will make the experience much more productive and quick. If you already know some, you can go from "understandable" to "correct and almost fluent" by reviewing with this book.
Really, a must-have.

Worth the effort to find........2001-10-31
This module is unique since it is not only a two-part story but it is also geared towards having the Dungeonmaster and Player switch roles. The module is meant to be used with a pregenerated character, and in places reads like an Endless Quest book from TSR. Also, realize that it is meant for one player only. I bought this module on Ebay and was pleased with the content. I was able to modify the module for use with my campaign and the playing character who is a Rouge. The module is focused on a thief/rouge character who is blackmailed into taking on a mission to steal a staff and a gem. It's colorful, and there is ample opportunity for hack-n-slash as well as much needed role-playing and thinking encounters. If you can find a copy, check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Interesting reprint of the classic Quest for the Fazzlewood.......2000-05-02
What to do on those nights when only one player can play? This module is one of my all-time favorite casual diversions - it's a nasty, espionage-oriented gauntlet for a single player "facing off" with the DM. Even better, there's two different adventures, so after you victimize your friend, they can turn the tables and show you just what it's like to be a lone PC struggling for survival! A wonderful workout that will quickly improve your play skills, or wash you out, for thieves.

This book was either ordered by mistake or sent to me by mistake. I will be returning it.
Awesome.......2007-07-02
Surprisingly great book. I read it by chance and loved reading about everything that happens in your body in survival situations. I couldn't stop reading it.
Simply Fascinating.......2007-06-17
I couldn't set this book down and I couldn't stop telling people about. An extremely well written book of the Doctor's personal stories and accounts of others. As soon as you read the first page you know you've found an amazing book.
GOOD BOOK. GOOD DOCTOR. GOOD MAN........2007-03-08
I bought this book for my Dad, who had Dr. Kamler perform surgery on his hands. He loved the book and Dr. Kamler signed it for him.
Really Hits the Mark..........2006-10-29
What a great read. Dr. Kamler uses his medical background and personal high adventure experiences to write a highly entertaining and informative read that covers the entire gamut of human survival experiences...covering everything from high altitude, exposure, dehydration and submersion, and veering slightly into the macabre...even survival cannabalism.
It's obvious Kamler did his homework, not only in the breadth of material covered, but also in producing a high quality read, remaining ever hopeful about the human experience. He even offers some medical explanations about the mysterious "X Factor"...when people survive despite overwhelming odds to the contrary.
Don't read Deep Survival, which is a well intentioned yet misinformed rant, read this book.
Customer Reviews:
A diverting hodgepodge of family recipes (some good, some mediocre) and techniques.......2007-08-20
Paul Prudhomme is a well known celebrity chef in the Louisiana cajun/creole culinary scene, as well as a prolific author. This particular book has some interesting information, but it's not one of my favorites.
What I liked:
* There's some good historical information on some old regional specialties that are slowly disappearing ... blood sausage, hog boucherie, salting/pickling/canning meat, etc. Some of this information is not particularly useful or practical for modern suburban cooks (who lack access to fresh pig blood and who have refrigerators and thus no longer need to salt/pickle/can stuff to preserve it), but it's important and interesting stuff that deserves to be preserved ... touchstones from a slowly vanishing era & sub-culture.
* The recipes are no-frills, stick-to-your-guts, feed a hardworking blue collar rural family type fare ... and ya gotta appreciate and respect that. Many of the recipes are well honed, and have the patina of age to them, and will always have their rightful place on the American table.
* There's some good instructional information that many other co-called 'cajun' cooks gloss over ... things like extensive tips of making, storing and using various types of roux, tips for cleaning (and eating) crawfish, etc.
What I disliked:
* PHOTOS: There are none ... only a small scattering of indifferently drawn B&W sketchs. Call me spoiled, but I like books with glossy photos, so that I have a general idea what finished dishes are *supposed* look like, presentation-wise. I also like photos, because it helps me 'windowshop' for recipes that I'd like to try ... that way I can see at a glance if it's something I'd be interested in, rather than having to read through a recipe at length in order to get a general feel for its style/approach/flavor. If I'm paying a premium for a hardbound book, then surely the publisher can include some work by a food photographer.
* COVER SHOT: Another thing that never fails to irk me is books that have photos of dishes on the cover that don't appear anywhere in the book. Case in point - this book features a photo of a whole roasted piglet on the jacket ... something I was interested in attempting for a BBQ I was planning at the time, so I bought the book. You guessed it - nadda. Zip. Zilch. Not mentioned anywhere, not even in the small print buried up front in the publisher's legaleze. Typical bait & switch 'teaser' photo, to entice readers. I wrote the publisher a ... ahem ... nice note about that goof.
* SCOPE & POLISH: This is just a book of some assorted family recipes - it's hardly an exhaustive treatise on cajun cooking, and recipes were duplicated faithfully rather than updated or polished in any way to achieve improved results ... the result is many recipes are lackluster and out-dated. Forget about modern appliances like food processors - this is chop/grind it all by hand cookin. Anyway, just because a given recipe documents the way grandma did it forever, doesn't mean that it's the best, tastiest, or easiest recipe ... as anyone who's serious about cooking will rapidly attest.
Anyway, it's a decent, if unspectacular and rather dated book.
Add a star if you're an old fashioned Louisana dirt farmer, age 50+, who raises pigs on/near the bayou, sans phone or electricity.
Good food from a wonderful family!.......2006-10-18
Grew up for part of my childhood in Opalousas LA. We had a local restaurant run by this great family in one of the near-by towns. They used to test out new recipes on my mother and father, but the desserts were always tested by me! This was a wonderful and loving family, full of fun and good food. thank you Prudhommes for the wonderful childhood memories!!! I'm sad that your book is out of print.
Now for others on Amazon. This is REAL cajun food. YOu get a lot of stuff that is buffed up to be cajun because it is supposedly spicey, and contains a few ingredients such as andoille sausage. But truthfully that does not make it cajun!!! Cajun food is supposed to be a mixture of creole, french and carribean influences -- but it is not those foods just mixed up together!!!! You cannot borrow this and borrow that! Cajun food is part of a culture, one of the many diverse cultures that make up our dearest US. So if you want to learn authentic, delicious Cajun cooking, pick up the Prudhomme Family Cookbook and Paul Pruhomme's Louisiana Cooking or Tastes of Louisiana.
This cook-book (written by the whole family)is a treasure, and unforetunately it's out of print. I would highly recommend buying it used even. I must own 20-30 cook-books, and yet I always borrow this one from my mom when I want cajun food.
Great book!! Should be back in print! And you can see a bit about Paul in Bon Appetite this month as well. He and his family are a generous lot.
The Prudhomme Family Cookbook.......2003-09-29
This spectacular Cookbook is sadly out of print. I have seen it here on Amazon.com though. Be sure to purchase your copy before they are all gone. I am a big fan of Chef Paul Prudhomme, my entire family is actually. We have all of his cookbooks. This particular book contains some of our favorites. We recommend the Jambalayas. There are several different variations. The Shrimp & Crabmeat Jambalaya is terrific. It's not a spicy Jambalaya so you might want to add some of the optional hot peppers as described in the recipe. We sure did, Wow what a difference it makes. The Fried Green Tomatoes are a wonderful tart snack or side dish. Green tomatoes can be hard to find, try your local farmers market or health food stores that sell fresh produce. These are definately worth the effort it takes to find them.
Prudhomme's Best.......2001-09-29
Unfortunately out-of-print, this great book contains many, many recipes from Chef Paul Prudhomme's family, along with a few from the King of Blackening himself. Meticulously detailed to ensure good results, the recipes are all failproof. Some recipes, however, serve better as conversation pieces than actual things you'd want to make. Hog's head cheese? I shudder to think. Red boudin ( made with fresh pork blood )? Eeek! All the same, the coconut cake recipe is really excellent, worth preparing your own fresh coconut for. A must for serious Cajun cooking fans.
A Must Have - It's out of print; if you can find it BUY IT.......2000-05-30
This book has changed my taste buds forever. The food is SO good! IT takes a little more work than most of today's cookbooks, but the results are worth it. If you like food, you need this book.

Book Description
Examining the interplay between Caspian security and energy development, this comprehensive book offers important new findings about the relationship between competition for energy resources; political and economic development in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan; and the propensity for conflict in the Caspian region. The contributors, a leading group of scholars and policymakers, also explore the ways in which Russia, China, Iran, and Turkey are fighting to protect their energy interests in the newly independent states and how this rivalry influences regional security and U.S. policy.

The best source on Central Asia oil policy.......2007-01-04
For those who want to understand why Central Asia has been fought over in recent history Rajan Menon provides an invaluable tool. This book goes region by region utilizing the best authors in each. The book covers the individual countries in the Caspian regions as well as the future prospects for Russian and OPEC interaction there. It clearly lays out how the region has been developing and although a little dated at this point it still provides an excellent foundation. The authors that contribute are the best in their fields and Menon organizes the book very well. Highly recommend if you are interested in oil policy.
Book Description
New Stakes in the Caucasus and Central Asia is a book focused on the Caspian Energy Resources and International Affairs in a region of the world that appeared on our maps shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the implosion of the Soviet Union. By giving an assessment of the actual energy reserves around and under the Caspian along with the export routes, the book details the geopolitical competition for what was once called "one of the greatest material Prize in world history, a stupendous source of strategic power": Hydrocarbons.

This superb anthology covers the entire length of the composer's career, from his landfall in Manhattan in 1923 to the Old Master period of the early 1970s. There are dozens of reviews, essays, appreciations, and memoirs, written not only by music critics but by such heavy hitters as Ralph Ellison, Simone de Beauvoir(!), and Blaise Cendrars. The book also includes a selection of Ellington's own dicta--be sure not to overlook his 1937 polemic from "Down Beat": "Ellington Refutes Cry That Swing Started Sex Crimes!" Superbly edited and endlessly intriguing, the Reader is an essential volume for Ellington nuts and neophytes alike.
Book Description
Duke Ellington is universally recognized as one of the towering figures of 20th-century music, both a brilliant composer and one of the preeminent musicians in jazz history. From early pieces such as East St. Louis Toodle-O, Black and Tan Fantasy, It Don't Mean a Thing, and Mood Indigo, to his more complex works such as Reminiscing in Tempo and Black, Brown and Beige, to his later suites and sacred concerts, he left an indelible mark on the musical world. Now, in The Duke Ellington Reader, Mark Tucker offers the first historical anthology of writings about this major African-American musician. The volume includes over a hundred selections--interviews, critical essays, reviews, memoirs, and over a dozen writings by Ellington himself--with generous introductions and annotations for each selection provided by the editor. The result is a unique sourcebook that illuminates Ellington's work and reveals the profound impact his music has made on listeners over the years. The writers gathered here represent a Who's Who of jazz criticism: Gunther Schuller, Whitney Balliett, Martin Williams, Gary Giddins, Stanley Crouch, Albert Murray, Nat Hentoff, Hugues Panassie, Stanley Dance, to name just a few. Their writings span Ellington's entire career, from the days when Duke Ellington's Washingtonians appeared at New York's Club Kentucky ("Probably the 'hottest' band this side of the equator"), to the Duke's glorious reign at the Cotton Club, to his later years as global ambassador of American music. Tucker has included some of the classic essays written about Ellington, such as R. D. Darrell's "Black Beauty," the first significant critical essay on Ellington's work and still one of the most important; Richard O. Boyer's lengthy New Yorker profile "The Hot Bach," printed here in its entirety; and Martin Williams's "Form Beyond Form," one of the best capsule introductions to Ellington's art. Throughout the book, the reader receives a balanced overview of Ellington's life as composer and performer, as public personality and private individual. Tucker provides a number of pieces on Ellington's compositions, including an entire chapter devoted to critical response to Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige, and there are also many moving pieces on Ellington the man, such as Ralph Ellison's tribute to Ellington on his 70th birthday, and Stanley Dance's funeral address. Finally, Tucker rounds out the collection with profiles on many of the outstanding musicians who worked with Ellington, among them Johnny Hodges, Bubber Miley, Billy Strayhorn, Ivie Anderson, Sonny Greer, Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton, and Ben Webster. This is a landmark volume in jazz criticism, a kaleidoscopic portrait of Duke Ellington's creative world, documenting his extraordinary achievements as composer, songwriter, bandleader, and pianist. It is an essential companion for Ellington enthusiasts, jazz fans, and serious students of American music.
Customer Reviews:
superb book but not for the new intitiate.......2000-04-11
This is one of the finest books I have read on Duke Ellington, beautifully and intricately compiled and with the voices of many on DE. It is a superb read for the Ellington aficanado; however, for new intiates to the Duke I wouls recommend Duke Ellington: A spiritual Biography by Janna Steed, an excellent boook but not quite so hefty and with a strong emphasis on his sacred music and concerts. But, for you aficiandos, Tucker's book is the tops!
