    Book Description

Debt was an inescapable fact of life in early America. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, its sinfulness was preached by ministers and the right to imprison debtors was unquestioned. By 1800, imprisonment for debt was under attack and insolvency was no longer seen as a moral failure, merely an economic setback. In Republic of Debtors, Bruce H. Mann illuminates this crucial transformation in early American society.

From the wealthy merchant to the backwoods farmer, Mann tells the personal stories of men and women struggling to repay their debts and stay ahead of their creditors. He opens a window onto a society undergoing such fundamental changes as the growth of a commercial economy, the emergence of a consumer marketplace, and a revolution for independence. In addressing debt Americans debated complicated questions of commerce and agriculture, nationalism and federalism, dependence and independence, slavery and freedom. And when numerous prominent men--including the richest man in America and a justice of the Supreme Court--found themselves imprisoned for debt or forced to become fugitives from creditors, their fate altered the political dimensions of debtor relief, leading to the highly controversial Bankruptcy Act of 1800.

Whether a society forgives its debtors is not just a question of law or economics; it goes to the heart of what a society values. In chronicling attitudes toward debt and bankruptcy in early America, Mann explores the very character of American society.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview in how bankruptcy is okay for elite.......2005-06-22

Today the rich can still find ways to get out of the spendthrift debts with trusts, shelters, and bankruptcy, but we have to crack down on the debts that poor people get into like student loans, medical expenses, unemployment and the like.

This book tells us that the elite in the U.S. have always been all in favor of getting out of their own debt while holding the lowborn to the "morality" of insolvency for life.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and Highly Pertinent.......2002-12-15

Bankruptcy is in the air these days, from Enron to overextended former dot-commers. So-called "bankruptcy reform" -- intended to make bankruptcy more difficult and more punitive for debtors -- has been pushed by large creditors for years, and almost passed in the most recent session of Congress.

I'm a first-semester law student. I came to this book with a solid, basic understanding of modern bankruptcy law (gained as a business person and as a legal assistant prior to starting law school). As an undergraduate I took two semesters of legal history, and I have an extensive personal interest in American history.

Despite my background, until I read this book I had no real appreciation of the implications of failing to have an effective bankruptcy law. Focusing primarily on the second half of the eighteenth century (both before and after the American Revolution), Republic of Debtors does an amazing job of showing the social, humanitarian and economic consequences of failing to provide for an orderly discharge of debts in bankruptcy, especially when combined with creditors' remedies such as imprisonment for debt.

I, for one, had never confronted the fact that imprisonment for debt survived so long after the American Revolution, nor did I realize that, aside from some brief experiments, the US did not adopt a set nationwide laws on bankruptcy until the late nineteenth century.

Professor Mann tells the story by drawing on a wide variety of primary materials, including the diaries of imprisoned debtors and documentation of court cases. One particularly interesting chapter deals with the an elaborate form of self-government that evolved within one of the debtor's prisons. As many of those imprisoned were relatively well-educated and had been involved in the movement for independence from England, it was only natural that they would have their own constitution and elected government.

Then, as now, there was a tension between the moral and economic aspects of bankruptcy. On one hand, debtors can be viewed immoral spendthrifts, on the other, as hapless victims of the vicissitudes of a world-wide economy or the bad actions of others. These same tensions underlie the current debate on changes to bankruptcy law, driven by creditors who are seeking a return to a more punitive, moralistic approach to dealing with insolvent creditors.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the modern bankruptcy debate, early American legal history, or social and economic history generally. It is also just a cracking good read.

    Cheers!

                  Book Description

This book retraces the life of the physicist Wolfgang Pauli, analyses his scientific work, and describes the evolution of his thinking. Pauli spent 30 years as a professor at the Federal Institute of Technology ETH in Zurich, which occupies a central place in this biography. It would be incomplete, however, without a rendering of Pauli's sarcastic wit and, most importantly, of the world of his dreams. It is through the latter that quite a different aspect of Pauli's life comes in, namely his association with the psychology of C.G. Jung and his school.

Fans of modern physics are well acquainted with Pauli. A Nobel Laureate (1945), who is best remembered for the Pauli Exclusion Principle. Enz takes us through Pauli's life. Most notably the crucial years at the Gottingen school of quantum mechanics in the 1920s, where quantum mechanics was born.

The book takes us into his research. But it also conveys some of the intellectual ferment and excitement of those times. And across the pages appear many other august notables in physics. Einstein, Born, Bohr...

Enz also tries to give some insight into Pauli's personality and his dealings with his family.

                  An enjoyable read.

                        Book Description

It's easy for people to write about their feelings in a journal. It's more difficult, however, to convert personal experiences into stories worthy of publication--fiction, nonfiction or poetry. Meg Files teaches writers how to transform their raw experiences into finished pieces. They'll learn how to identify story-worthy material, conquer fears associated with personal exposure, determine a story's focus, shape the material into a cohesive whole, then edit and revise as needed.

Writers working in any form will find this book invaluable for supplying them with the inspiration and practical instruction they need to get their experiences and emotions on paper and into print.

As an aspiring writer, I found Ms. Files' book extremely helpful. Several writer's guides I've purchased that were written by editors and established authors seemed pretentious, condescending, and downright dull, but I found Ms. Files' book quite the opposite. She shares her experiences and her struggles as a writer and lets the reader peek into her writing process. She covers a wide variety of issues that every writer faces and gives excellent tips for improving writing and adding authenticity to any work. Her book will help turn any amateur into a polished professional.

Meg Files gives the push needed to enable any writer to take a risk, which, as she says, is the secret to real writing. However, more than being a pep-talk in a thousand words or less, this is a HANDBOOK to GOOD WRITING. It covers practical matters, style, voice, substance, and challenges you at every level. This book is wonderfully insightful into the writing process, particularly the fears that will hinder a writer, regardless of experience level. I sent one to my mother and she called me two days later to say that after reading the book she had to stop everything and sit down and write a story she'd been wanting to write for 72 years! Give this book to anyone you love who yearns to write. Keep a copy yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Best Interpretation of Writing Honestly.......2003-01-12

" Absolutely the most accurate, honest portrayal of writing from the heart and all the fears that accompany the lifestyle. Files opens so many doors and windows, offering a true glimpse into the depths of writing and using what you know- even when you're afraid to `go there'.

We all have life experience and stories to tell. Meg Files leads you down the path of successful interpretation and teaches us all how to draw out the good work from our brains. The biggest lesson learned from Write from Life was to write naked, write from the essence of our very souls and not worry about everyone else's opinions."

                        - Michelle Hall, Writer & Editor for ABP

5 out of 5 stars Turbo-Charge Your Writing in the New Year.......2003-01-03

An inspiring guide for writers at every level. Meg Files goes beyond the "How to" genre and delves into the writers psyche to explore the ways many of us try to limit ourselves creatively. Sometimes Ms. Files plays the stern writing professor with specific advice --("Stay at the desk, just stay at the desk"), and compelling writing exercises (worth the price of the book just for these) other times she is the pragmatic therapist ("writer's block is just fear of writing badly") but mostly she is the strong voice of a compassionate and knowledgeable friend.

Throughout the book you will find specific and useful advice on everything from jump-starting your own writing to how to take (and deliver) criticism, dealing with fear of failure and how to define your own success (hint: not usually tied to publication thankfully). I'm glad this is the first writing book I read in the New Year -- I feel charged up and ready to rumble! Good reading!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books about writing.......2002-10-01

This is one of best books about writing in general that I have read, and I did read a lot. It is not only for those who want to write non fiction, but also fiction.

I learned a lot, it gave me courage, thank for this wonderfull book !

                            Book Description

Neo-Confucianism, the state sponsored orthodoxy of China's later empires, is now recognized as an important key to understanding China. This study looks at the roots of Neo-Confucianism in an age when Buddhism and Taoism had eclipsed the Confucian tradition in importance. Li Ao (c. 772-836
A.D.), though generally acknowledged as a forerunner of Neo-Confucianism, is still regarded as deeply influenced by Buddhism. The historical reasons for the creation of this image of Li Ao are examined, prior to a close investigation of the actual circumstances which shaped his Fu-hsing shu, 'Book
of Returning to One's True Nature,' the essay which had the deepest influence on the development of early Neo-Confucianism. Although common assumptions about Buddhist influence on Li Ao are questioned, the true importance of the essay emerges in the typically Chinese patterns of thought which it
exhibits and which gave it an impact transcending the immediate circumstances that prompted its writing. Li Ao is an important contribution for academics and students interested in East Asian history and thought and religious studies, especially Buddhist studies.

While this text is designed to be an overview of world civilizations, there are several key pieces missing. The author takes not a Eurocentric perspective on history, but rather with an Asian bias. More is devoted to Asia and the Middle East than anywhere else. Events as well as important historical figures are mentioned in passing, but never discussed in great detail. Causation of events is left vague and leaves much to be desired. The essays throughout this volume, as well as the second volume, do not have authors, making it difficult to use them as references with proper citations. However, the primary complaint I had with this as a college level text is the lack of criteria. Not once do the authors that put the work together state what makes a civilization differ from a society or culture, what makes a historical figure worthy of mention, or why the events mentioned were selected.

Overall, I'd use this as a very rough and incomplete outline when studying world civilizations. Definitely use other more complete sources for the more specific understanding.

Through this method of presentation, students can observe the many ways that events, movements, and groups of people have served to shape history and can learn to make connections between these themes and issues. 5 out of 5 stars Review: Muscle Physiology and Cardiac Function by L.e. Ford.......2001-08-06

This is a well written book covering many aspects of animal locomotion and cardiac function, from the basic mechanisms of muscle contraction, through the optimum sizes for various athletics, to myocardial contractility and heart failure. The author's range of knowledge appears extraordinary, and many of the discussions of scientific experiments are enlarged by brief descriptions of the scientists themselves. Occasional references to his own work in the various areas further suggests that he has had first hand experience in the several areas of scientific research and clinical practice, as well as personal familiarity with many of the scientists. This is an excellent book for someone wanting to learn either about basic muscle physiology or about the function of muscle in the body. The Introduction indicates that book chapters began as handouts for an undergraduate course, and the book would be an excellent choice as a text for a course in muscle physiology. It is written at the level of college students majoring in Biology, and some familiarity with lower level undergraduate science is required for a full appreciation of the concepts presented, but the writing is sufficiently lucid that a detailed knowledge is not required. The author states that he has attempted to avoid mathematical equations as much as possible, and for the most part, he has kept this promise, although there are some areas where mathematical derivations could not be avoided. In summary, this is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know how muscle works or how it operates in the body

In these twelve essays, Roberts writes wryly and with fondness of the twenty years he worked as a wildlife biologist for the US Forest Service and later as a freelance biologist doing ecological and environmental surveys for government and business.
