This book gives a good basic overview of the health care finance. Its best feature is that it is applied to health care only, so you don't have to go through other business models. I cannot see using it in the future though - if you are planning to manage your office/work on a budget/evaluate your organization from a financial stand point, this is not the book you will need.

      Book Description

Crossing over the Line describes the folly of the Mann Act of 1910—a United States law which made travel from one state to another by a man and a woman with the intent of committing an immoral act a major crime. Spawned by a national wave of "white slave trade" hysteria, the Act was created by the Congress of the United States as a weapon against forced prostitution.

This book is the first history of the Mann Act's often bizarre career, from its passage to the amendment that finally laid it low. In David J. Langum's hands, the story of the Act becomes an entertaining cautionary tale about the folly of legislating private morality.

Langum recounts the colorful details of numerous court cases to show how enforcement of the Act mirrored changes in America's social attitudes. Federal prosecutors became masters in the selective use of the Act: against political opponents of the government, like Charlie Chaplin; against individuals who eluded other criminal charges, like the Capone mobster "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn; and against black men, like singer Chuck Berry and boxer Jack Johnson, who dared to consort with white women. The Act engendered a thriving blackmail industry and was used by women like Frank Lloyd Wright's wife to extort favorable divorce settlements.

"Crossing over the Line is a work of scholarship as wrought by a civil libertarian, and the text . . . sizzles with the passion of an ardent believer in real liberty under reasonable laws."—Jonathan Kirsch, Los Angeles Times

5 out of 5 stars No laughing matter.......2007-10-08

Once a leading pop culture touchstone, the Mann Act has gone the way of the hi-fi and bakelite. In a way that's too bad, because as this terrific work of legal and social history shows, the Act was a sad chapter in the history of American efforts to legislate private behavior.

Langum provides a thorough account of the Mann Act's history. Highlights include the more well-known defendants, like Charlie Chaplin and Humbert Humbert. The analysis is at once concise and evocative--his description of the hazards of "affirmative discretion" gave me a new handle on Ken Starr. The narrative sometimes gets bogged down in all the cases, but my only real complaint is that he didn't find space to namecheck PDQ Bach and his immoral porpoises.

            Book Description

The aim of this book is to show how supramolecular complexity of cell organization can dramatically alter the functions of individual macromolecules within a cell. The emergence of new functions which appear as a consequence of supramolecular complexity, is explained in terms of physical chemistry.

The book is interdisciplinary, at the border between cell biochemistry, physics and physical chemistry. This interdisciplinarity does not result in the use of physical techniques but from the use of physical concepts to study biological problems.

In the domain of complexity studies, most works are purely theoretical or based on computer simulation. The present book is partly theoretical, partly experimental and theory is always based on experimental results. Moreover, the book encompasses in a unified manner the dynamic aspects of many different biological fields ranging from dynamics to pattern emergence in a young embryo.

The volume puts emphasis on dynamic physical studies of biological events. It also develops, in a unified perspective, this new interdisciplinary approach of various important problems of cell biology and chemistry, ranging from enzyme dynamics to pattern formation during embryo development, thus paving the way to what may become a central issue of future biology.

                    Book Description

The preferred method of data analysis of quantitative experiments is the method of least squares. Often, however, the full power of the method is overlooked and very few books deal with this subject at the level that it deserves. The purpose of Data Analysis Using the Method of Least Squares is to fill this gap and include the type of information required to help scientists and engineers apply the method to problems in their special fields of interest. In addition, graduate students in science and engineering doing work of experimental nature can benefit from this book. Particularly, both linear and non-linear least squares, the use of experimental error estimates for data weighting, procedures to include prior estimates, methodology for selecting and testing models, prediction analysis, and some non-parametric methods are discussed.

In my work I must review large data bases. We typically fit various models to the data. I've used the method of least squares to perform the analyses and found a reference to Wolberg's book. After reading several chapters I realized that there were several important aspect of this method that I wasn't aware of. I found the discussion of available software particularly helpful as well as the analysis of errors. Least Squares is a very powerful technique and this book provides a very complete discussion of the method.

                      Book Description

Since the publication of Tropic of Cancer in 1934, Henry Miller has been the target of critics from all sides. A Self-Made Surrealist sets out to provide a view of Miller different from both earlier vindications of him as sexual liberator and prophet and more contemporary feminist critiques of him as pornographer and male chauvinist. In this re-evaluation of Miller's role as a radical writer, Blinder considers not only notions of obscenity and sexuality, but also the emergence of psychoanalysis, surrealism, automatic writing, and the aesthetics of fascism, as they illuminate Miller's more general 20th-century concerns with politics and mass psychology in relation to art. Blinder also considers the effect on Miller of the theoretical works of Georges Bataille and André Breton, among others, in order to define and explore the social, philosophical, and political contexts of the period. By examining the enormous impetus Miller got from being in the midst of French culture and its debate, A Self-Made Surrealist shows that Miller was indeed a seminal writer of the period rather than simply an isolated male chauvinist.

                        Book Description

The story of the Warsaw ghetto is one of the most tragic episodes in the Second World War. Using a so-called "threat of typhus" as their "scientific" justification for quarantine, the Nazis crammed almost a half million Jews into a small quarter of the city, depriving them of food, clean
water, adequate sanitation, and medical supplies. For three years, from 1940 to 1943, the ghetto inhabitants were packed seven or more to a room, struggling incessantly against starvation, disease, and death. Of the 400,000 Jews in Warsaw before the war, only a few thousand survived.
In Courage Under Siege, Charles Roland, a physician and historian, provides the first history of the medical disaster that took place in the Warsaw ghetto, offering a compassionate account of the tragic struggle for life and, in particular, of the heroic efforts of the ghetto's doctors, nurses,
and social organizations who provided relief in the face of overwhelming odds. He portrays the nightmarish conditions of the hospitals where operations continued without electricity, gas, running water or sewage systems, where corpses lined the corridors, and where beds contained as many as three
patients at a time. He describes the ingenuity and humanity of doctors and hospital workers who continued to provide medical services while they themselves were starving and facing the same destiny as the rest of the ghetto inhabitants. Heart-wrenching, inspirational stories of these dedicated
medical workers shine brightly in this otherwise bleak landscape. For instance, Roland describes the creation of a clandestine medical school, "a beautiful case of passive resistance," which gave as many as 500 students a medical education and a semblance of normal living--though only a few survived
to continue their training. And Roland also tells of a major scientific study of hunger conducted by ghetto physicians capitalizing on the one thing they had in abundance--starvation. This was research of the purest kind, intended to advance human knowledge, since these doctors had no illusions that
the research would help them or their patients survive.
Drawing on an impressive array of research materials as well as interviews with surviving medical workers, Roland draws a stunning portrait of how the medical community of the Warsaw ghetto resisted the ravages of disease and starvation inflicted by the Nazis. This volume is a lasting testimony
to their courage and to the power of the human spirit in the face of horror and adversity.

This book contains great detailed information on the lives and times of the Jews during the Holocaust. I would recommended it to anyone doing research, or to any one who want to know about the resistance effort or the type of life that was experienced under the Nazi party. Contains excellent pictures as well.

I live in the Chicagoland area and was just at the museum today. As expected, the dollhouse is as amazing as it was when I was a little girl. I saw this book in the gift stop. IT ONLY COSTS $24.95!!! Please, please don't pay these people double what the book actually costs! Go to the Museum of Science and Industry's website at http://site.msishops.com/books.html and look for the book at the bottom of the page. I'm sure there's shipping that's not included. There might even be tax, but it'll no doubt still be cheaper than paying these people $50-$60 for the book. What a rip-off!!!

When I was 7 years old, my mother, grandmother and a cousin of mine went to Chicago, and one of the places we went was the Museum of Science and Industry. Before we went, my mother told me that as a young girl, she had seen the fairy castle when it toured the country before becoming a permanent exhibit at the museum. She told me how much she loved it, and I couldn't wait to see it. I was not disappointed. This IS the ultimate dollhouse. Every time I go to the museum, you can't get me to leave without seeing the fairy castle.I took my own daughter to see it, and now she loves it, too. The last time we went, I found this wonderful book at the gift shop, and was thrilled that now I could look at my beloved fairy castle whenever I wished. This book is a real treasure, with beautiful pictures of the castle. Anyone who loves dollhouses, and the fairy castle in particular, will love this book. It never fails to provoke happy memories for me.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the castle in Chicago, and can hardly find the words to say how magnificent it was! Still, in the time I had to view it, so many details were missed. That is why this book is so great. It not only displays the castle with better lighting, it gives you a chance to savor all the tiny details you might never have seen. There is also some wonderful biographical information on Colleen Moore herself. A must for miniature lovers, little girls, and dreamers everywhere!

I was browsing in Amazon.com when I discovered this book. I was so excited that I couldn't wait to order it. Chicago's Museum of Science & Industry is one of my all-time favorite places on earth. I still go there whenever I go back for a visit. As a little girl, growing up in Chicago in the 60's, one of my favorite things was going to see Colleen Moore's Doll House every year. I'm sure you can probably imagine how magical this huge, intricately planned, priceless, bejeweled dollhouse seemed in a darkened room by itself, lit with soft lights, telephones all around it so you could listen to discriptions of each room as you peered through the glass barrier surrounding it. This book captures much of the beauty of the amazing miniature treasures and the magic of the house itself-and definitely puts a smile on my face.

                                        Book Description

Twelve months of visits to a mountain lake tells more than twelve tales. The solitude found during a Wednesday in the winter is completely different than the chaos found on a Saturday in the summer. The seasons make one set of changes. We make the other. The combination produces a much more interesting set of experiences that can't be revealed in one visit or in a page of some guidebook.

Barclay Lake sits about an hour northeast of Seattle on the soggy side of the Cascade Mountains. It is an easy hike within challenging terrain and is one of those rare places where the extremes of hiking can be found. Families can camp with kids and climbers can assault rocky spires.

Different experiences give people different points of view. It is no wonder that debates about the environment and land-use are so complex and confusing. Barclay Lake is one place where those various points of view meet and conflict.

4 out of 5 stars A different kind of hiking book.......2004-11-30

Tom Trimbath is a hiker who often posts on the Washington Trail Association web site about the North Cascades area. Although I met the guy on a trail once, I don't know him and have no financial interest in his book - a disclaimer, if one is needed.

This book is different from trail guide books in that it tells about visiting the lake during each of the twelve months of the year. A couple of months, however, Trimbath was kept from reaching the trailhead or lake by bad roads and weather. Although his failure to reach the lake and describe it during early winter was disappointing, his descriptions of dealing with a closed road and much snow was entertaining.

This is not a rip snortin' adventure story. This is an in depth report on one hiking locale during different seasons of the year. There is a ton of detail about the area around Barclay Lake, and Eagle Lake to the north, under different conditions. Since I hike this area frequently, I found the book quite interesting, seeing takes on the area that I hadn't considered.

Trimbath provides the reader with interesting insights by reporting on the lake during the lonely winter season, the crowded summer scene, and even from the perspective of a worker on a trail crew. He is a keen observer of the flora and fauna of the area and points out information that isn't usually found in a hiking book.
