Nothing new.......2006-03-03
I thought this book might give me some breakthrough short term tips, but it is the same old stuff. I have always wanted to be a writer, but when I see how many pages a writer takes to say something that could be said in about ten percent of the time,I realize I am to much of a get to the point guy to be a writer--Another words this like so many other investment books, should be and article instead of a book.
The Worst Author - Ever.......2006-02-14
Save your money. Never, never waste your funds on the drivel this author produces!!
A profitable trader would never have time enough to write even one tenth the quantity of words this person produces.
Find traders that actually make money to learn from. There are a few that have written good books.
As starting points:
For equities traders try: Professional Stock Trading
For futures traders try: Trading Day by Day
These are simply starting points, but are written by REAL traders, not worthless-book producers.
Stock Strategies 101.......2005-08-12
This book is a good basic starter quide. Like taking a class called Stock Market 101. It is a good place to start. I just happened to read this book first then followed it with the Investors guide to technical analysis. It was a terrific double feature and recommend reading these two together. It was worth the money but not fitting the "hot" title.

ICARDA International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas Address: P.O. Box 5466, Aleppo, Syria Telex: 331206 ICARDA SY, 331208 ICARDA SY Fax: 963-21-213490 Established in 1977, ICARDA is governed by an independent Board of Trustees. Based at Aleppo, Syria, it is one of 18 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which is an international group of representatives of donor agencies, eminent agricultural scientists, and institutional administrators from developed and developing countries who guide and support its work. The CGIAR seeks to enhance and sustain food production and, at the same time, improve the socioeconomic conditions of people through strengthening national research systems in developing countries. ICARDA focuses its research efforts on areas with a dry summer, where precipitation in winter ranges from 200 mm to 600 mm. The Center has a global responsibility for the improvement of barley, lentil and faba bean, and a regional responsibility in West Asia and North Africa for the improvement of wheat, chickpea and pasture and forage crops and the associated farming systems. Much of ICARDA's research is carried out on a 948-hectare farm at its headquarters at Tel Hadya, about 35 km south-west of Aleppo. ICARDA also manages other sites where it tests material under a variety of agroecological conditions in Syria and Lebanon. However, the full scope of ICARDA's activities can be appreciated only when account is taken of the cooperative research carried out with many countries in West Asia and North Africa. The results of research are transferred through ICARDA'S cooperation with national and regional research institutions, universities and ministries of agriculture, and through the technical assistance and training that the Center provides. A range of training programmes is offered, extending from residential courses for groups to advanced research opportunities for individuals. These efforts are supported by seminars and publications and by specialised information services.

Book Description
Two dimensional NMR represents a significant achievement in the continuing effort to increase resolution in NMR spectroscopy. This book explains the fundamentals of this new technique and its analytical applications. It presents the necessary information, in pictorial form, for reading the ``2D NMR,'' and will enable the practicing chemist to solve problems and run experiments on a commercial spectrometer by using the software provided by the manufacturer.
Book Description
Teaches problem-solving style by explaining the methods that experienced scientist and engineers use to define a problem, to solve it, and to present their solution to others.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2005-10-19
I found this book really useful for setting out a method and format for creating elegant, accurate solutions to college physics and chemistry problems. I took physics 10 years ago and am about to take another course as I prepare for vet school. This book increased my confidence level. What's more, I actually feel excited to start -- a minor miracle considering how much I had been dreading the course. (This book does not assume you will be taking calculus-based physics; it would work equally well for calculus- and algebra/trig-based courses.)
Helpful.......2000-06-21
This book is a very helpful resource when first learning how to solve basic physics and engineering problems. It offers a perspective that the class text or professor might not convey to the students.
Book Description
Winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize for Literature (with fellow Swedish writer Eyvind Johnson), Harry Martinson (1904-1978) was noted for his innovative use of language combined with his keen observation of nature. He also wrote three volumes of nature essays in the 1930s. Views from a Tuft of Grass, however, was published late in his life, in 1963, and the essays of this volume reflect a maturer and cleaner style and are less philosophically dense than the earlier works.
Customer Reviews:
Looking More Closely at Nature's Secrets.......2006-09-04
Coming upon Harry Martinson's VIEWS FROM A TUFT OF GRASS is a reminder of how few writers and poets have stepped out of the ordinary means of painting visual pictures with words to transcend the written page and enter the ether of the atmosphere that contains all of nature's beauty.
Harry Martinson, born in Sweden in 1904 and awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1974, approached such apparently routine topics - water, boating, maps, etc - in a manner that supported his thesis that reality and imagination must be intermingled in order to illustrate nature through words. Included in this inspiring little book are essays on the subject of nature writing, strongly suggesting that the use of familiar terms to describe unique moments results only in clichés. His message is to urge writers (and readers!) to heighten their sensitivity by pushing the standard limits of descriptive words into a realm that allows a stronger communication of the mysteries of the moments of nature that pass us constantly, for the most part unnoticed.
His language is simple and eloquent: 'In a sky reflected downward on a lake, the clouds whirl around like summer spirits, and as you row across this sky of water your oar dips quietly towards evening like a dark wooden spoon into the cloud-milk'. The book is translated from the Swedish by Lars Nordstrom and Erland Anderson in what seems to be a deeply sensitive manner. This brief book (only 152 pages) should be part of the library of every poet and every reader of poetry. Harry Martinson has much to offer, both in his own writings and in his advice to all of us. Book Description
This A-Z reference covers over 1000 major personalities who lived during some of the most eventful years in European history. In biographical entries of up to 300+ words, Who's Who in Europe, 1450-1750 spans an era which saw the Renaissance and baroque periods in art, the Reformation and ensuing bloody wars of religion, the first great scientific and medical discoveries, and much more.
Readers will quickly locate information on people like: English playwright and reputed spy Aphra Behn; astronomer Tycho Brahe; Elizabeth of Bohemia, the "Winter Queen"; Gabrielle d'Estrees, mistress of King Henri IV;Martin Luther; Martin Luther; Cardinal Richelieu; Ivan the Terrible; notorious Spanish Inquisitor Torquemada; Vermeer; and a crowd of other fascinating people. Highly readable, yet supported by impeccable scholarship, this reference will be invaluable for students, and a pleasure for anyone interested in the history of early modern Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Concise guide to the people of Early Modern Europe.......2004-01-22
Kamen's Who's Who in Europe is a 1000 entry guide to some of the most important figures of Early Modern Europe. The entries contain biographic and bibliographic information and in the main cover just enough to give an idea of the chief contribution(s) of each individual. Some entries, though, are slightly biased by the opinion of the writer. Phrases such as, "erroneously believed" should have been left out, except when the individual covered in the entry was clearly operating on misinformation. Compared to Grendler's six-volume Encyclopedia of the Renaissance Kamen's guide is rather slim. But, you can't throw Grendler's encyclopedia in a briefcase or backpack as a companion to whatever you are currently reading. I have found Who's Who in Europe useful and would recommend it to anyone studying Early Modern Europe who doesn't already have Grendler's work or needs something portable.
Book Description
In her first year as a missionary to a small group of native women in the Ecuadorian jungle, Elisabeth Elliot faced physical and spiritual trials. In These Strange Ashes, Elliot captures the mysteries and stark realities surrounding the colorful and primitive world in which she ministered. More than just a recounting of her early days, this is a beautifully crafted and deeply personal reflection on the important questions of life and a remarkable testimony to an authentic Christian commitment.
Customer Reviews:
one of my favorite books.......2006-11-21
This moving book is the true story of Elisabeth Elliot's first year of missionary work in Ecaudor. Her task was to formulate an alphabet for the unwritten Colorado language. With vivid and often humorous description, she tells of the trials of jungle living and the struggles of trying to help the Colorados who did their best to avoid the influence of outsiders.
During this time, Elisabeth faced several painful lessons, testing her faith in God when it appeared that this faith was in vain. Her missionary work seemed fruitless, yet through this suffering, she learned that it is "in our acceptance of what is given that God gives himself."
This story is hauntingly sad, but Elisabeth's firm belief in the sovereignty of God shines through. She shows that God asks us only to trust and obey. When all the evidence seems to prove your faith in vain, this book will encourage you to continue in faith, prayer, and obedience.
real........2006-07-15
The story of Elisabeth's first year on the mission field has often been glossed over in response to the more well-known facts of her husbands martyrdom.
This book tells the story of that first year in such a vivid and open way that one can't help but connect with her through joys and sorrows, disappointments and triumphs.
In this book, more than any of the others, Elisabeth Elliot seems so real. What an encouragement that someone who wasn't all that different than me should turn out to be such a strong woman of God...
She's earned my respect.......2006-04-29
I've always thought Elisabeth Elliot was an exceptional woman. But after reading this book, I have a new found respect for her. It is easy to say God is sovereign. But when you have sacrificed the comforts of modern life and served God on his terms, you earn a whole new level of respect. This is an encouraging book. I am not a missionary, but a homeschooling mom. And this book spoke to my heart. Ms. Elliot speaks of four lessons of faith. They are bedrock. The last paragraph says, "Christ is sufficient. We do not need support groups for each and every separate tribulation. The most widely divergent sorrows may all be taken to the foot of the same old rugged cross and find there cleansing, peace and joy." It is so easy to be overwhelmed with life's situations, to think I am in a rut. This book is an uplifting reminder that we are not to be knocked off course by lifes trials. But to look at them as an opportunity for God to once again prove that his grace is sufficient.
Trust God And Do The Next Thing.......2006-03-17
If you, like me, are one of those needing help to go on during a crisis, this is the book for you. Elisabeth Elliot follows Amy Carmichael's (missionary to India) wisdom and "does the next thing" leaving the results with God.
As if you were there in the jungle yourself.......1999-10-26
Live the thoughts, eyes and ears of these courageous women, whose lifes bear the scent of a totally dedicated hearts sensitive to Gods call while living in a remote jungle in Ecuador and their tales will open your mind to their beauty of character and lives set as a flint for God

How to tell a bison from a buffalo-not to mention a yam from a sweet potato
Here's a book for anyone who's ever wondered about the difference between a crayfish and a crawfish. Or a frog and a toad. Or a buzzard and a vulture. Animal taxonomy is not what you'd call an exact science, and the field is lousy with all sorts of confounding terms.
In this entertaining, highly useful reference, Philip Mortenson takes on a wide-ranging list of monikers, from plants to higher mammals. Reviewed by an impressive cadre of experts, the book lays to rest any lingering confusion over the distinctions between seemingly related-yet crucially distinct-terms, such as mushroom and toadstool; moss and lichen; crocodile and alligator; skate and ray; turtle and tortoise; and mink, sable, ferret, ermine, stoat, and weasel. Everyone from the language lover to the nature buff will be charmed by this book.
Philip B. Mortenson (Minneapolis, MN) studied the philosophy of science at the University of Minnesota.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting intersection of linguistics and life sciences.......2004-06-08
If you're one of those people who keep getting *entomology* and *etymology* confused (happens to me all the time), this might be just the book for you. That's because Philip B. Mortenson has produced a work that should appeal not only to natural historians and biologists, but also word geeks and fans of linguistics. I commend him for bridging these very disparate worlds.
Divided up into short and easy-to-read sections, Mortenson covers such confusing topics (and topics that some people may not have known were different in the first place) like redwood versus sequoia, rabbit versus hare, shrimp versus prawn, sweet potato versus yam, and a great many others.
I always encourage, and try to acknowledge, precision in language and expression. This wide-ranging and entertaining book is both a fun read and a handy reference to have around. I recommend it to both sides of the traditional divide between the sciences and the humanities.
Author comment.......2004-05-27
Pictures were initially included, but had to be pulled due to legal issues.
Terrific text...needs pictures!.......2004-05-06
It has been my experience that most people are not concerned one bit about calling a toad a "frog." If you _do_ care, however, and if you are unsure of many of the confusing common names for animals, plants, and fungi, this book is a gem. It begins with an overview of taxonomy, and discusses how some scientists come up with names of newly discovered species (for instance, he explains why there are recently discovered wasps called _Polemistus chewbacca_ and _P. yoda_), a bit about common names, and the derivations of many scientific names--great for building vocabulary, and scientific knowledge at the same time!
Each of seven chapters is divided into smaller oft-confused groups...in chapter 3, "Terrestrial Invertebrates," he explains these groups:
Insect * Spider * Crustacean
Bee * Wasp * Hornet * Ant
Bug * Beetle
Centipede * Millipede
Dragonfly * Damselfly
Grasshopper * Locust * Cricket * Katydid
Mite * Chigger * Tick * Louse
Butterfly * Moth * Skipper
Caterpillar * Grub * Larva * Maggot * Nymph
In Chapter 7, "Mammals," the author lists all the common names for the cougar (There are 33! How confusing!). And he does not limit his examination of taxonomy to North America, so it can be used as a world-wide reference.
If it had pictures, it would be a better book, but these days, most of us have the internet which provides near-instant access to photos of most species.
