    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Self Study.......2005-08-13

The text is very easy to read and simple to follow along. The self study guide that comes with it is very handy to get a full understanding of the mathematical equations. I was disappointed that the weblink provided in the book to get more up to date information from Standard & Poor's was not working. I had to order the 11th edition for my second finance class but that was by order of the university. When the 11th edition arrived the weblink in that book worked. I really enjoy reading the book on my commute to and from work. I recommend this book to even the curious person who wants a better understanding of retirement and pension plans.
I will always refer back to the two texts for all my finance needs.

5 out of 5 stars Foundations of Financial Management, 10th Edition.......2003-09-28

Delivery was terrific. I received the book 6 days after I ordered it and it's brand new!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Not Excellent.......2002-07-12

As an undergrad taking his first finance class, I have have found this book to be quite useful. The concepts are explained in simplified, less-complicated ways and make reading each chapter less frustrating than perhaps some others (compared to some of the econ texts that I have had to use!).

It is well-written, concise, and employs some very straightforward, easy-to-follow graphs/diagrams. Also, both the formulas and the exercises at the end of each chapter are quite useful.

The only reason that I did not give it a 5-star rating is because some of the chapters did not use enough "real-world examples" or hypothetical situations in some of the more challenging lessons. This might better aid those students who are new to finance or simply need another angle to better grasp the idea.

    5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, well-written finance textbook.......2002-03-02

This text is characterized by its extreme simplicty in explanation and presentation of its material. The flow of presenting the contents of each chapter is so sequentially logical that it makes the reader grasp the financial concepts very fast and effectively. Colorful illustrative diagrams are employed extensively to facilitate a high level of understanding and help the learner develop the necessary conceptual links between inter-related topics and items. In addition, it is very comprehensive and intensely supported with a "luggage" of real-life cases .I recommend this excellent text to everyone who needs to take an introductory course in corporate finance.

1 out of 5 stars An excellent book for those who do not wish to learn finance.......2001-06-04

I used to be "illiterate" in terms of finance and I thought that this book would help me to comprehend the basic principles of corporate finance. Unfortunately, the content of this book is completely implicit. The authors wrote a book without taking into account the nature of the audience. Consequently, this book does not address to financial managers or to any kind of managers or even students. The only people who can really understand the content of this book is the authors themselves!

After having read many books regarding corporate finance and financial management, I have become familiar with this discipline. There are hundreds of well-structured remarkable books that you can purchase at a lower price...

      Book Description

For years William Gould has argued for labor law reform that would facilitate trade union organization and collective bargaining. That position, which he expands upon in this latest book, is based on his belief in the value of pluralism, the importance of employee participation in the economy as well as the political process, and the effectiveness of unions in best advocating employee interests in the workplace. In the face of increased erosion in worker protection and weakening of the collective bargaining process, Gould proposes an agenda of reforms to balance the interests of management and workers, and to protect employee participation and job security.

Each chapter presents in-depth summaries of developed areas of labor or employment law and related policies. At the core of Gould's discussion are the workings and usefulness of the National Labor Relations Act. Gould first provides a history of the past and current labor management relationships - how we got where we are today - and then reviews and evaluates such factors as the possible repeal or reform of the NLRA, the possible increase in worker participation plans, the change in the use of the strike weapon, wrongful discharge law, the protections afforded nonunion employees, and race relations as factors that will affect the future of the labor management relationship and, consequently, the future of industrial relations.

William B. Gould IV is Charles A. Beardsley Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. An impartial arbitrator of labor disputes since 1965, he is a member of the Clinton Administration's Committee on the Future of Worker Management Relations. He is the author of A Primer on American Labor Law.

                    Book Description

In this book the author explores the work of the fifth-century BC Athenian vase-painter, Sotades, one of the most familiar names in vase painting. Previous scholarship has dealt mainly with questions of attribution, style, and iconographic interpretation, but Dr Hoffman concentrates on inherent meaning: what does the imagery of these decorated vases really signify? He argues that, contrary to widely held conceptions, there is an underlying unity of meaning in Greek vases and their imagery, a unity rooted in the religious beliefs and ritual practices of the society from which they spring. Each chapter discusses a specific aspect of the artist's iconology, placing it in the context of fifth-century BC Greek philosophical and religious thought.

                              Book Description

In Whores of Babylon, Frances E. Dolan offers a perceptive study of the central role that Catholics and Catholicism played in early modern English law, literature, and politics. She contends that despite sharing the same blood, origins, and history as their Protestant antagonists, Catholics provoked more prolific and intemperate visual and verbal representation, and more elaborate and sustained legal regulation, than any other marginal group in seventeenth-century England. This careful and thorough study examines legal and literary representations of the "Catholic menace" during three crises in Protestant/Catholic relations, from the Gunpowder Plot (1605) to the Popish Plot and Meal Tub Plot (1678-80). It also offers the first sustained analysis of the extent to which gender issues informed both Catholicism and anti-Catholicism in the early modern period. Available for the first time in paperback, this book will appeal to scholars and students of early modern England, Catholic history, and gender studies.

                                    Book Description

Proteins fold in interesting and intriguing ways. Importantly, the structure of a protein can provide additional clues to its function(s) than does its sequence alone. Scientists interested in characterizing a novel protein sequence should therefore not only familiarize themselves with computer tools and methods for sequence analysis but also with those for structure analysis. Computer scientists interested in developing software tools for bioinformatics will find that structure analysis is no less interesting and challenging than sequence analysis. Both scientists and computer scientists will note that the field of protein structure analysis is going to become increasingly important in coming years, now that the post-genomic era is here.

This short book introduces the topic of protein structure informatics in two parts. Part I covers the main public-domain protein structure databases, and associated tools such as structure viewers and search tools. Part II covers problems and algorithms for aligning a structure to a structure, a sequence to a structure, for predicting a structure for a sequence, on "protein structure profiles", and the molecular docking problem. All chapters contain references for further reading.

This book has been cooking slowly for more than two years. Over this period, it has undergone numerous revisions and refinements. The material has also been presented and refined in classes taught by the author at the University of California, Santa Cruz extension.

                                        Book Description

Protein informatics is a newer name for an already existing discipline. It encompasses the techniques used in bioinformatics and molecular modeling that are related to proteins. While bioinformatics is mainly concerned with the collection, organization, and analysis of biological data, molecular modeling is devoted to representation and manipulation of the structure of proteins.

Protein informatics requires substantial prerequisites on computer science, mathematics, and molecular biology. The approach chosen here, allows a direct and rapid grasp on the subject starting from basic knowledge of algorithm design, calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory.

An Introduction to Protein Informatics, a professional monograph will provide the reader a comprehensive introduction to the field of protein informatics. The text emphasizes mathematical and computational methods to tackle the central problems of alignment, phylogenetic reconstruction, and prediction and sampling of protein structure.

An Introduction to Protein Informatics is designed for a professional audience, composed of researchers and practitioners within bioinformatics, molecular modeling, algorithm design, optimization, and pattern recognition. This book is also suitable as a graduate-level text for students in computer science, mathematics, and biomedicine.

                                          Book Description

The revised lectures presented in this volume are based on a course given by leading scholars at the C.I.M.E. Summer School held in Martina Franca, Italy, in July 2000.
The 11 revised chapters presented were carefully revised and cross-reviewed in order to provide competent coverage of mathematical methods for protein structure analysis and design. The topics addressed pinpoint major issues arising in the development and analysis of models, algorithms, and software tools devoted to the structure of proteins, all of which play crucial roles in structural genomics and proteomics.
