Chemical Topology: Introduction and Fundamentals (Mathematical Chemistry, Volume 5)
Danail Bonchev Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9056991744 |
Book Description
Topology is becoming increasingly important in chemistry because of its rapidly growing number of applications. Here, its many uses are reviewed and the authors anticipate what future developments might bring. This work shows how significant new insights can be gained by representing molecular species as topological structures known as topographs. The text explores carbon structures, establishing how the stability of fullerene species can be accounted for and also predicting which fullerenes will be most stable. It is pointed out that molecular topology, rather than molecular geometry, characterizes molecular shape and various tools for shape characterization are described. Several of the fascinating ideas that arise from regarding topology as a unifying principle in chemical bonding theory are discussed, and in particular, the novel concept of the molecular topoid is shown to have numerous uses. The topological description of polymers is examined and the reader is gently guided through the realms o

Beyond Chaos: The Underlying Theory Behind Life, the Universe, and Everything

Book Description
Customer Reviews:
Irritating and pointless.......2004-05-23
Lots of speculation, no substance.......2004-03-14
On a general note, in thinking of fractals (discussed extensively but loosely in the book) I wonder if we are not over-interpreting the data. After all, mathematicians have known all along that mathematical models can represent a variety of natural processes and yet have no causal relation to them. Similarly, when we see fractals in a wide variety of biological structures and processes, is it because fractals are fundamental to them, or because, as I suspect, a fractal can be used to model anything? Is it the chicken or the egg?
Know it's place.......2003-11-23
Long, empty, boring, not worth the time.......2003-05-31
I found myself rereading series of pages because I had the feeling that I had missed something and then finding that I hadn't missed a thing, there was simply no content to retain. This happened repeatedly and made this book a real chore to finish and ultimately unrewarding. A shame too because the premises Mr. Ward teases the reader with are intriguing but the book fails miserably to live up to the promises made on the dust cover. Budding authors should seek out his agent however, that individual is well worth his fee!
Muddled, inaccurate, overblown, and poorly written.......2003-05-15
The book is also plagued with numerous factual errors. (His reference to Beethoven's Eroica Symphony as a late work, produced in the same general period as the Ninth Symphony and the Diabelli Variations, has been cited in another review.) Additionally, Mr. Ward's writing style and his many lapses in grammar, syntax, and punctuation make the book irritating to read and make one wish that a good editor had taken the manuscript firmly in hand. Awkward shifts in tense within a single sentence, lack of subject-verb agreement, and Mr. Ward's apparent disdain for commas make what is actually a simple book a chore to read.

Rethinking the African Diaspora: The Making of a Black Atlantic World in the Bight of Benin and Brazil (Studies in Slave and Post-Slave Societies and Cultures)
Kristin Mann Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 071465129X |
Book Description
One of the most heavily travelled migration routes from Old World to New was the trajectory of slave ships that left the coast of West Africa along the Bight of Benin and landed their human cargo in Brazil. An estimated two million persons over the course of some 250 years were forced migrants along this route, arriving mainly in the Brazilian province of Bahia. Earlier generations of scholars studied this southern portion of the slave trade simply as an east-west movement of enslaved persons stripped of identity and culture, or they looked for possible "retentions" of Africa among descendants of slaves in the Americas.
As a result of new research, we can now paint a more complex picture of peoples and cultures in the south Atlantic, from the earliest period of the slave trade up to the present. The nine papers in this volume indicate that a dynamic and continuous movement of peoples east as well as west across the Atlantic forged diverse and vibrant re-inventions and re-interpretations of the rich mix of cultures represented by Africans and peoples of African descent on both continents.

Emerging Minds: The Process of Change in Children's Thinking
Robert S. Siegler Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0195126637 |
Book Description
How do children acquire the vast array of concepts, strategies, and skills that distinguish the thinking of infants and toddlers from that of preschoolers, older children, and adolescents? In this new book, Robert Siegler addresses these and other fundamental questions about children's thinking. Previous theories have tended to depict cognitive development much like a staircase. At an early age, children think in one way; as they get older, they step up to increasingly higher ways of thinking. Siegler proposes that viewing the development within an evolutionary framework is more useful than a staircase model. The evolution of species depends on mechanisms for generating variability, for choosing adaptively among the variants, and for preserving the lessons of past experience so that successful variants become increasingly prevalent. The development of children's thinking appears to depend on mechanisms to fulfill these same functions. Siegler's theory is consistent with a great deal of evidence. It unifies phenomena from such areas as problem solving, reasoning, and memory, and reveals commonalities in the thinking of people of all ages. Most important, it leads to valuable insights regarding a basic question about children's thinking asked by cognitive, developmental, and educational psychologists: How does change occur?
