An interesting topic clogged by Phd.-thesis prose........1997-12-06

As a professional dressmaker myself, I was excited when I found this book. I'm very interested in the history of American women in general and dressmakers in particular. Gamber has done a great deal of research and presents a thoughtful portrait of these early entrepreneurs and how they succeeded and failed.

Unfortunately, this book is obviously a Phd. thesis--I say "obviously" because the text is dry and heavy with unnecessary five-dollar words. An idea is never presented simply if it can be presented in a complex and wordy manner. A good editor could have cut the length by 25%. Also, there are very few illustrations, which I found disappointing. Nevertheless, it's the best source available on this very specialized topic, so I persevered.

Informative and extensive.......1997-07-24

While informative and well-researched, the book lacks an overall spirit that would drive the point home in an entertaining manner. There is great information and insights here that are buried beneath too much raw data. Yet the book is a great addition to an overlooked area of women's history and a fascinating glimpse into turn of the century events that shaped gender, fashion and technology

Why are people continually surprised to discover that money is "just" meaning? Mutual Life, Limited spends time among those who, in acknowledging the fictions of finance, are making money anew. It documents ongoing efforts to remake money and finance by Islamic bankers who seek to avoid interest and local currency proponents who would stand outside of national economies. It asks how alternative moneys both escape and reenact dominant forms of money and finance, and reflects critically on their broader implications for scholarship.

Based on fieldwork among participants in a local currency system in Ithaca, New York, and among Islamic banking practitioners in the United States, Indonesia, and elsewhere, this book exploits the convergence between the reflexivity of monetary alternatives and social inquiry by questioning the equivalence between money and ethnography. Can money ever be adequate to the value backing it? Can social description ever be adequate to messy and contingent realities?

Bill Maurer's ethnographic discovery is that ethnography as such--the holistic description of a way of life--cannot be sustained when faced with a set of practices that anticipates and incorporates it in advance. His fluently written book represents an unprecedented critique of social scientific approaches to money through an ethnographic description of specific monetary alternatives, while also speaking broadly to the very problem of anthropological knowledge in the twenty-first century.

a generally uninspired collection of essays.......2001-07-19

It is not surprising that this collection of essays is uneven, since such volumes usually are. Here, only two of the essays stand out as particularly instructive -- David Wilkins's on whether a lawyer should subordinate his or her identity to (certain) professional ideals, and Koniak & Cohan's on counterproductive incentives built into the class-action system. Several other essays contain an interesting idea or two, but most often they are too impressionistic, and their recommendations too general, to be of any real use.

I also must mention one odd thing about this book: it almost appears that someone involved in its production bore a grudge against Wilkins, because his name is misspelled in the table of contents, his bio is strangely truncated, and there are...many egregious typos in his essay...
