This is the first book that really explains IFRS very well. The examples are understandable, it's comprehensive and helps on nearly every issue that might arise when dealing with IFRS.

I expected this book to include more technical information but i discovered that it is an introduction of IFRS for beginners and can be used for as a guide for people with no accounting background

not worth the money.......2000-12-07

This book provides several examples of making transgenic crops - weat, triticale, rice, corn, barley, peanut, etc. For some reason, examples published are not always best of the field. I have an impression, the examples are chosen pretty randomly. They do not include simpler novel technologies like apex shoot transformation and flower dip, although by the time of the publication these technics were available. The review of the material is poor, authors mostly just present their data published somewhere else. For the book super high price I expected much more, and pretty much disappointed.

An Intuitive Text.......2003-07-11

This book is incredably clear and well-written. The illustrations are beautiful and the sample problems are illuminating. It's especially good for developing an intuitive understanding of the basic physics equations, without making the kind of committment the Feynman Lectures demand. I thought it was excellent preparation for the MCAT as well.

Weak Text.......2003-03-11

This is a calc-based physics text.

Quick Reference: the material in this volume covers electic fields, electric potential, electrostatics, current (DC and AC) and circuits, magnetic fields, inductors, Maxwell's Equations/EM Waves, properties of light, mirror/lense optics, and interference/diffraction.

Review: the chapter on Maxwell's Equations and Electromagnetic Waves was exceptionally bad. It should have tied Electricity and Magnetism together, but just leaves the reader confused. The rest of the text makes everything more complicated than it actually is; Tipler won't give the concepts of the reader, the reader has to discover them on her own. The examples are not a sufficient level for the problems in the book. This book is NOT FOR SELF-STUDY.

Value of Book and a Better Text: the value of this book is minimal. For the price that is being asked (for just a single-volume paperback) is absurd. In place of Tipler's book, I would refer anyone to "Physics for Scientists and Engineers" by Serway; this book is sufficient for self-study, which is a quality you really need in a physics text. This book offers the material of 3 volumes of Tipler's books (the 3rd volume of Tipler's series is modern physics) at half the price. One of my friends has actually completely turned over to Serway, despite that her assigned text is Tipler (she doesn't even open her Tipler text anymore), and is now doing better in her class.

Terrible for Physicists, Great for Engineers.......2003-02-20

The Tiper physics textbook, while excellent for an engineering student, lacks much of the theoretical rigor desireable in a physics curriculum. A great many of the problems at the end of the chapter prove to be remarkably simple, and boil down to hunting through the book for the right constants and the right equation to plug into to find the answer. Actual problem solving skills are not developed for a physicist. The chapters on circuits, while excellent for electrical engineering majors, are almost a waste of time for a physics major. Even though the textbook is very thorough with what it teaches, it does not teach at a very high level nor does it prepare physics majors for more difficult future classes. Having used the Kleppner and Kolenkow Introduction to Mechanics textbook for Intro. to Classical Mechanics, shifting gears to something as trivial in difficulty as the Tippler for Electrostatics just leads to frustration over spending more time finding the right constant than actually solving the problem.

Tipler's Classical Physics Text is The best.......2000-10-18

I am a Physics major who finished my classical physics sequence and Tipler's volume of Classical Physics text is fantastic. Volume 2 focuses on Electricity, Magnetism, and Light. The text is clear, the problems are great. The biggest advantage to this text is its format. It has great pictures and amazing examples. Here is what makes Tipler's text in my mind better than Serway or H&R. There are numberous examples reflecting the problems set on the end of the chapter. many of these examples also are "try it yourself" examples, which has suggestions on one column, and the equations on one. Every example Tipler spells out the concept in words and puts the equation next to it. This builds on problem solving techniques, the hardest part of beginning and learning the introductory physics discipline. Other things worthy of note for TIpler is his subtle references to Modern Physics, indicating more is on the way in terms of the way we understand the universe. Overall, Tipler is fantastic. I highly reccomend his textbooks, He even has a Modern Physics text is the best in its class like his classical physics text. (remember a good book is never a substitute for a good teacher)

Good, but--!.......2000-04-23

Any physics textbook would be a good one in the hands of great teachers. However, without a teacher, Tipler's physics probably will not be the good choice. His way of thinking physics has a very unique personal characteristic: simple sentence contains deep meanings but does not have clue to follow. Yes, it is an introductory text, but an introductory text should, I think, explains concepts in a way that is easy for others to read and understand. It should not confuse the naive physics majors but to help them make the basic ideas more clear and familiar. In an advanced point of view, his texts are excellent because the ideas require a considerable amount of thinking. It might have been a great intro. physics series if the sentenses are more concise and "elementary"!

A wonderfully gossipy, humourous novel!.......2005-01-31

Smollett has written a number of good stories, but this is probably his most complex of all that he's written. The book provides the reader with a hero that is memorable. Smollett provides just the right touch of madness and humour in his hero to make this a very warm, readable story. The format for this novel is letters which makes for an interesting change, and provides a unique way of developing characters. So much of a person's individuality can be found in letters and in fact, letters are a major source of historical information. But in these letters we learn all we need to know about Humphrey Clinker and his England. An unclean and brutal world it was with death, disease and decay. But there was unbelievable love and warmth too. What a journey!

My favorite book ever..and I'm not kidding........2003-02-06

This is a book that I was obligated to purchase for an 18th century lit class. We never got to it on the syllabus, so it collected dust. When I did finally pick it up I couldn't put it down. I laughed out loud frequently. I am amazed at how well it's 18th century humor has stood the test of time. You must commit past the first 50 or so pages to get into the rhythm and style. Then you'll be hooked. Lest you think that this is just a book for English majors with a bent towards the 18th century, I should point out that my other two favorite books are Lonesome Dove and Cryptonomicon.

I was fortunate to be at Wounded Knee in 1973 and onward through the trials of Dennis Banks and Russell Means in Minneapolis.

This book is the truth of what happened and the wonders (spirits and spiritual events) that occompanied the liberation of Wounded Knee. The stories told in this book capture the event more than any book I have read relating to an event like this. I had the fortune to work with all of these people and was inside Wounded Knee during the liberation. My picture is located on page 73 (I am on the left sweeping the clinic).

Gladys Bissonette, Ellen Moves Camp, Lou Bean, and many other women were the strength many times that helped us all to go forward. Many a time we dealt with death (Pedro Bissonnette) in very dangerous situations but their strength, dedication, and love never stopped.

Sarah Thunder Hawk and a medicine man by the name of Hard Heart were instrumental in helping me undrstand why I must stay and help even though egos within the Wounded Knee Legal Defense/ Offense Committee were more interested in themselves that the struggle at hand.

This struggle and the people I worked with changed my life forever and since that time I have continued working to ensure that all people are recognized and that the idea that we all are inter-connected is known.

Please read this book and see the strength, the compassion, the love, the idea that people who had nothing could for a brief time create a situation in which thier lifes were exposed to the world, as well as why things needed to be changed.

Wounded Knee.......2001-02-07

This book provides a great view on the situation in Wounded Knee in 1973, from the eyes of the Oglala Sioux. You really get a feel for the nwhole situation and you learn about the revolutionary acts of Indians to get justice from imperialist America. Read this book if you are learning about native struggle in America.

This book was very informative and Coleman's style of writing took me back in time during the time of Wounded Knee. Coleman's sources are the most accurate on the subject of the Soiux Nations struggles, Because he interviewed a Soiux tribal member. I thougt it was awesome the way Coleman takes his son's to meet the author of " Bury my heart at Wounded Knee." or at least the author's grandson.

A disjointed hodge-podge of primary accounts.......2002-09-26

This book is atrocious. The "voices of Wounded Knee," represented in the eyewitness accounts that the editor claims to have spent thirty years gathering (remarkably inefficent work, considering the many sources he missed),are heard in a disjointed fashion. The typeset constantly alternates between normal face and italics - one of many aggravating features of the book. The Wounded Knee tragdy deserves far better than this.

A National Crime Re-Examined - Voices from the Past Speak.......2001-09-10

I thoroughly appreciated Coleman's technique of piecing actual historical record (interviews & letters) with a minimal of commentary - While hardly a dry presentation, Coleman's technique recreates the atmosphere of the time, and made me feel like I was "living" the events of the time as if I was recieving real-time press reports and actually listening to interviews of the participants. Coleman also reminds the reader of the importance of studying "unfiltered" historical material - His organization of such material into a comprehensive chronolgy is what makes this book truly unique.
From a historical perspective - the book is also a must-read and should be REQUIRED READING in ALL US HISTORY COURSES. As usuall, our national crimes and shame in mistreating the American Indians - particulary the Lakotas - continues to be white-washed. Reading actual writings from many of the key individuals of the time (Red Cloud, McLaughlin, Short Bull, Nelson Miles, Sherman, and various newspaper editorials) provides a shocking view of America's virulent racism, the press's penchant for creating panic and militaristic feeling, political greed and ambition, Indian despiration and hoplessness. If reparations are due anyone - its these people.

A very informative, well written book. It shows the injustice that the "white man" did to the Native Ameican. It is a Must Read for all. Am glad that the author had first hand information from someone that was there at the time.

Delightful collection of papers.......2003-02-26

Out of all of the IEEE collections of papers which are published in book format.... I truly believe that this is by far the best. The papers, were specially written for the October 1998 edition of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory for the Golden 50th Anniversery of information theory, a field which was arguably started in 1948 with Claude Shannon's publication of The Mathematical Theory of Communications in the Bell Systems Technical Journal.

This collection of papers is from famous authors such as Sergio Verdu, Costello, Cover, Calderbank, Robert Grey, Neuhoff, Berger, Gibson, Proakis, etc.. Most of the papers are survey papers with phenominal references so you can pursue your interest further. Also, since these are survey papers (meaning "tutorials"), unlike most of the usual papers published in Transactions on IT, these are accessable (understandable) to the average person who does not specialize in digital communications or information theory.

The collection of papers is a true delight, bar none, the best tutorial papers I've ever seen written, anywhere. This book is worth thousands of leisurly hours of reading. But don't worry... if your looking for some deep technical stuff, or deep historical coverage of certain topics... there are also papers in the book which fit that criterion. Something for everybody at any level of expertise.

Reprints of IEEE Trans on Info Theory, October 1998.......2000-03-31

McLaughlin was the editor of the Trans on Info Theory then, and Verdu was the guest editor for the 50th anniversary special issue. The main content of the book is identical to this issue of the transaction except for pages renumbered. The major difference is the improved paper and printing quality :-)

The issue was an excellent collection of great tutorial papers on various important topics. Obviously Verdu did a superb job as the guest editor, besides one article by himself. Cover and Thomas is an excellent information theory textbook, but the coverage and depth are sometimes limited to be a well organized textbook. This book (or T-IT Oct 1998) fills in many parts where Cover and Thomas left untouched. In addition, each review paper by top researchers of the field comes with relatively exhaustive listing of references.

Minor, but important addition in the book part is the indeces. Name index to the name of authors of literatures cited is of great value.

The most important difference of this book from the Transactions is that it comes with a CD-ROM of all reference entries since the Trans on Info Theory began, and the entries are well organized and fully linked. All is in HTML format except for PDF files for the papers contained in the book. Therefore the CD-ROM does not depend on a particular platform (I work at a Microsoft free environment, so I couldn't comment on the CD-ROM otherwise)

For the value of the papers, and the effort required to compile and maintain the complete list of journal refernces are well worth your money to keep a copy, especially because there aren't many info theory books.

This book presents an excellent review of the last fifty years of information theory, since the days of Claude Shannon. The material in this book is well-compiled and comprehensive. A "must" for any person interested in the flow of Information Theory over time!
