Essays, journals, letters, and an interesting piece of historical fiction tell this story of the young women who worked in the textile mills in New England. Timetable of the workday and Boarding House regulations of the day are enlightening - especially if you think life is hard today!

5 out of 5 stars Primary Sources help in the study of the Industrial Revoluti.......1999-05-29

This collection of letters, journals, newspaper accounts and interviews of the young girls who worked in the Lowell Mills is balanced off by the thoughts of the Mill owners. Great background for the study of Lyddie, by Katherine Paterson.

    Product Description

Publication of this book is especially important for my country because our economy depends to a large extent on the remittances of overseas workers. We are particularly interested in the new technologies cited by the authors. These technologies would reduce the cost of remitting money to recipient countries and greatly benefit our workers abroad. Kudos to the World Bank for publishing this comprehensive and useful book. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo President, Republic of the Philippines Readers will find his book an enthralling reminder of the indissoluble financial links that bind migrants to their home countries. These financial links need to be encouraged and sustained by supportive macroeconomic policies. Tito Mboweni Governor, Reserve Bank of South Africa An excellent examination of the global remittances policy agenda, Remittances: Development Impact and Future Prospects is a timely and exciting resource for academics, development institutions, central banks, and all policy makers in developed and developing countries. Hernando de Soto President, Institute for Liberty and Democracy New research shows the astonishing scope of remittances, with formally documented flows now estimated at $90 billion for 2003. Globally, remittances now constitute the largest source of financial flows to developing countries after Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and indeed in many countries they now exceed FDI flows. Remittances explores policy options for enhancing the poverty alleviation impact of remittance money in recipient countries, and addressees concerns about increasing migration and inequality. It looks at new technologies that allow remittance service providers to reduce direct transaction costs and open new channels, enhancing convenience for remitters and improving levels of transparency and accountability for regulators and policy makers. Importantly, it also establishes a baseline for further research and collaborative effort, showing the areas where the international financial institutions, particularly the World Bank, can add value to enhance the positive impact of remittance flows and minimize less welcome effects. Edited by Samuel Munzele Maimbo, who has already published authoritative articles on this subject, and Dilip Ratha, who first revealed the global significance of remittances, this book is intended for remittance service providers, as well as policy makers and researchers interested in financial sector, migration and development issues.

    Book Description

Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose, as most everyone knows, and as we might know The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas or even "Patriarchal Poetry." But Gertrude Stein is far more than her best known words and works, and this monumental study gives us for the first time a finely detailed, deeply felt understanding of both the music and the mechanics of this great modernist master throughout one of her most productive periods. With The Language that Rises, Ulla Dydo, a reader of Stein without equal, makes apt readers of Stein of us all, and shows us why this unduly neglected and famously difficult writer merits our close attention and appreciation.

Taking up all of Stein's works between the publication of "The Making of Americans" and "Lectures in America," Dydo examines the process of their making and remaking as they move from notepad to notebook to manuscript-from an idea to its ultimate refinement as the author's intentions and concerns assert themselves. Though not a biographical study, The Language the Rises sets each text in the context of Stein's daily life and work, showing how the elements of her immediate world enter her writing to be enlarged upon, deleted, transformed, or combined with other elements of reading or remembering. The result is an unprecedented view of the development of Stein's work, word by word, text by text, and over time.

The product of over twenty years of intense examination of Stein's notebooks, manuscripts, and letters, this book is the most extensive and detailed study of Stein's way of writing ever written, and as such, suggests answers to the fundamental questions raised by this author's brilliantly opaque works: what kind of writing was Gertrude Stein writing, and what kind of reading does this writing demand?

    5 out of 5 stars two gifts.......2004-09-14

Gertrude Stein is one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. She has influenced all modern art, literature and theatre. She has often been ignored or set aside as unreadable, unperformable, opaque. Yet when approached with an open mind; the genius is awe inspiring. Ula Dydo, is another gift, someone who has taken the time to sit down and explore, to play in her own scholarly way. Dydo's love of Stein is contagious. She has created an opening that I hope a lot of curious people step into.

    5 out of 5 stars An Elucidation.......2004-08-10

Since I first read Three Lives in high school I became fascinated with the writing of Gertrude Stein. During the past three decades I have read all her work. Because she requires so much effort, so much attention and concentration to detail, I have also tried reading as much about her as I could find; none as enlightening, as lovingly researched, as clearly written as Ulla Dydo's The Language That Rises. Hers is truly an "elucidation!"

5 out of 5 stars Really Getting To Know Gertrude Stein's Writings!.......2004-06-09

What better way to get to know Gertrude Stein than to be guided through some of her key writings by one of the world's best Stein scholars, Ulla Dydo! It's not "Stein For Dummies," but it certainly is a very readable book which analyzes Stein's texts bringing in information from her life as appropriate to get a clearer picture of not only what she wrote, but why and how she wrote what she wrote. A must-have book for anyone who is really serious about reading and understanding Stein, as well as a great introduction to Stein's other works if the only thing you've ventured to read is THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ALICE B. TOKLAS, which is also, by the way, addressed in this book.

          Book Description

This comprehensive and cogent survey examines the subject of embryonic determination, the set of processes fundamental to animal development by which cells in the early embryo acquire different developmental capabilities. Examining both the classical literature and the newer, molecular findings, the author summarizes the current state of our understanding of determination and poses key questions for the future. He begins with a consideration of how much spatial pattern is already laid down when the egg forms inside the mother, and ends just before the formation of visible organs. Within these limits he also considers evidence obtained by a variety of techniques, both experimental and biochemical, derived from the embryos of a variety of animal groups. This is a suitable text for upper level undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in developmental biology.

This is an excellent resource for teachers and students of English studies. Reading Fictions explores a range of outstanding short stories from around the world, and guides students towards an understanding of how readers create meaning for the texts they read. Like all of Chalkface's texts, the focus here is not on giving answers but on helping students see that literature is about more than 'figuring out' what a writer wants us to think or feel.

                Book Description

As a book about cultural memory and retrieval, this collection of essays asks readers to reconsider who represents Asian America and what constitutes its history. Defining the early period as spanning the nineteenth century and the 1960s, the original essays here speak to the difficulty of recovering a past that was largely unrecorded as well as understanding the varied experiences of peoples of Asian descent. Interdisciplinary in approach, the essays address the Asian American individuals and communities that have been omitted from "official" histories; trace the roots of persistent racial stereotypes and myths; and retrieve artistic production that raises vexed questions of what counts as "art" or as Asian American. By reconsidering the political, cultural, and material history written in the last three decades, this volume contributes to a new understanding of Asian America's past and relationship to the present.

This book was quite interesting though the class at the university was more about theories and politics than I had liked. The stories and experiences that the people share in this book were truly touching and intriguing.

                Book Description

This anthology traces the development of thinking in the philosophy of science from logical positivism to the present. Subsequent articles often clarify or critique preceding ones. As a result, students get a sense of how philosophical theories develop in response to one another.

                3 out of 5 stars not 'perfect'.......2006-12-28

                so-so text...
it's funny that it represents reason as opposed to the faith (meaning Christian faith). The entire section is called "reason versus faith" - that's weird... Faith is not versus reason.
Book is kinda alright, but it subliminally biased a little (well, where are the unbiased textbooks anyway?)...
Text presents some good essays, but could have been better...

5 out of 5 stars Argumentation at Its Best!.......2003-02-15

This book is organized under 9 sections each containing several papers and excerpts written by well-known philosophers of science. Each section deals with a major theme in the philosophy of science such as the nature of scientific theories, reason vs. faith, some contemporary issues like the philosophy of physics, psychology and biology, and more.

What makes this book unique is that each paper (or excerpt) is followed by a paper (or excerpt) supporting an opposing argument to one just presented. The juxtaposition of two texts provides the reader with adequate material with which to ponder. The author's purpose does not appear to give the reader two options from which to choose the "better" argument, for this would be the fallacy of false alternative... nor does the author do this to encourage the reader to find a "happy" compromise between opposing arguments, for this would be utilizing the defeated Socratic dialectic... the purpose is to promote critical thinking in the reader. Analogically speaking, this book is to the reader (philosopher) what weights are to a body builder. It is the food for thought! A well-organized intelligent read I highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars A walk in the clouds of thought.......2001-05-02

As a former student of Dr.Schick, I can credit him with teaching me the value of critical thinking, and how to do it. Here, is an excellent collection of great thinkers, with insight and commentary on the nature of life, man, and mind. Anyone who wants to know his or her place in the world, or simply enjoys lively debate and exploration into the great questions that shape our world, would appreciate this edition.
