Customer Reviews:
Great book. Easy to understand but leaves a few things out.......2004-11-20
I bought the 9th edition as the bookstore was clearing old stocks. At US $1.20 this book is a bargain, though the value of the information in this book is obviously much more than that.
It covers most topics but some things like derivatives are given only a cursory glace.
Nevertheless a good introduction to the basics of financial management.
Excellent book!.......2002-12-04
Comprehensive, accesible and updated with great Web resources. Highly recommended!
Great book, up-to-date.......2002-11-04
This is a fun and easy to understand book for a often-tedious though important subject --corporate finance. Wachowicz takes pain to update the book through his web page. Excellent!
This is one of the best corporate finance book.......2001-10-27
This book is used in the Applied Capital Budgeting at University of Massachussetts Dartmouth. It's a very helpful and useful book. In order to understand time value of money, financial statement analysis , capital budgeting and risk , return , I am strongly advise you to buy this book.
One of the best.......2000-05-31
I have my copy (9th edition) open next to me as I write this review. I used it as an MBA student at the University of Tennessee, seen the new edition in the bookstore and still use it as a reference today. The book continues to reflect the breadth and depth of knowledge the author has for corporate finance.
I have one qualm: revisions should have an emphasis on the latest in their field (unless you have a book on dead English poets! ). Where this book is unshakeable in relaying the fundamentals to the students of finance, it could possible use more information on areas like EVA, CCV, derivatives, etc. But then again, this book is about fundamentals, right? Regardless, a great book.

Ducklings, Piglets, Goats and Sheep, Oh My.......2006-08-27
Ann Drysdale left London and a failed marriage to make a life for herself and her three children in the North York Moors. Her efforts to raise a variety of small livestock result in weekly columns for the newspaper. These columns became this book.
Nurturing orphan lambs, trying to milk a goat for the first time, and protecting her ducklings from the local fox give a wry look at making a living on a small farm. The reader can celebrate her successes as she describes the birth of the piglets and sympathize with her frustration as weather, inexperience and other factors complicate her life.
If you like animal stories (James Herriott), give Drysdale's books a try. If you think you would like to live close to the land and raise animals, read this book for a first-hand account of the difficulties involved in such an undertaking.

Book Description
Human biology has now entered into a phase of post-genomics and it might not be an exaggeration to say that the major outcome of the human genome sequencing has finally been to open the way to the exploration of the proteome-proteomics.
Proteins are the functional output of genes and there are two main expected outcomes from human proteomics. The first is to discover new molecular markers for early diagnosis and profiling of pathologies. The second is to decipher the intracellular signaling pathways leading to the initiation and progression of pathologies, for the identification of new targets and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. This is clearly a promising challenge that this book explores through a series of ongoing experiences and projects representative of the new era in which biology and medicine have now entered.

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive study of its kind in nanostructured materials, formed by a diversity of synthesis techniques, and with broad applications. Interest in nanostructures has been building up quite a momentum in the various contributing fields, but the scope of this particular work is unique.
This report reviews the status of research and development in nanoparticles, nanostructured materials, and nanodevices worldwide, with particular focus on comparisons between the United States and other leading industrialised countries. Topics covered include particle synthesis and assembly, dispersions and coatings of nanoparticles, high surface area materials, functional nanoscale devices, bulk behaviour of nanostructured materials, and biological methods and application. The final chapter examines related government funding programmes around the world. Site reports of visits conducted by the WTEC panel to leading laboratories in Japan and Europe are also given.
Audience: This volume will be of interest to researchers from a wide range of disciplines whose work involves materials science, condensed matter physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and computer and information sciences. It can also be recommended as a text for a graduate course in materials science or solid state physics.
Customer Reviews:
Great Math Book.......2007-05-30
This is a one of the best semi-technical mathematics books I ever read. What I mean by "semi-technical" is, you need somewhat of a math interest and education to appreciate it, and if you have that, you can read it casually. You don't need pen and paper; it's not a textbook. However, occasionally you will want to grab the pen and paper to verify what the author writes.
For an ex-math person as myself, this book is an eye-opener as to how many areas of life are touched by fractals and chaos theory. Everything from nature, to economic markets, to music, to just plain theoretical stuff is mentioned here. And the writer delivers it in a well-organized, lucid, entertaining, and passionate fashion. And it is well-illustrated, which really helped me understand....
I'm on my 3rd reading of this book since 1992, and if I wear out the book, I'm buying another one! I rank this up there with "Prime Obsession" as the two best non-textbook math books I ever read.
For the uninitiated!.--Fun too!.......2003-02-28
For the uninitiated! --The author combines insight with story telling. He has a story to tell, and does it well! Not only does he know the theory inside out, he has the ability to get accross the central points so it (almost) seems easy, in any case entertaining, using pictures (including cartoons), humor, and equations when they are needed. He further make clear the many fascinating links between chaos theory, algorithms, technology, and areas of pure math, such as number theory. Highly recommended!
A comprehensive introduction to chaos in two levels.......2002-03-17
This book can be read in two different ways:
The first one is intended for the uninitiated who wants to get an introduction to chaos and fractals; the way Schroeder guides you into the chaotic phenomenae that occur everywhere around us is clear, elegant and funny. He plays with chaos and makes the reader part of this game.
The second way to read this book includes a warning for scholars: This is not a textbook! The mathematical background used to explain this game is strong. Shcroeder lets the committed reader to work with the maths by himself, so you must have paper, pencil, and computer near to you in order to enjoy the book's whole potential, in this case Shcroeder has all the experience and knowledge on the matter to guide you through "this infinte paradise" in a very firm way.
The only thing I'd wish from this book was a new hardcover edition, I've read it so many times that my copy is getting very spoiled.
If you are still interested after reading this book, but you want a little help with your maths then I'd recommend "Chaos Theory Tamed" by Garnett P. Williams. It will do the trick. However if you just want to fall in love with chaos without complications, then you should read "Chaos: The Making of a New Science" by James Gleick.
Best book on chaos.......2001-01-28
This book is a complete guide of all possible situations in science where you may encounter chaos. It provides for every situation an intuitive as well as very formal view of every problem and the corresponding solution. The main drawback concerns its relative inaccessibility for non-scientific people, it requires a quite important scientific background to understand the formal part. Anyway, even for the lay-man, it can be interesting to read, in order to understand the widespread of chaos and non-linearity in real-life situations, not just the purely scientific-related ones.
However, the treatment is terrific, with excellent description and explanations of the how's and why's, at an intuitive level as well as a very rigorous one ! I don't think i've ever read a book of such a high quality...
This book is worth its price, and without a doubt deserves the time you'll need to go through it.
Great stuff, not for the uninitiated.......2000-12-31
If you've had some background in this kind of mathematics, or are otherwise familiar with concepts like limits and Lebesgue measure, you should thoroughly enjoy this well-written and good-humored introduction to fractals, chaos, and related topics. Do not, however, undertake to read this book as an easy introduction to those topics, because Schroeder uses a number of terms without bothering to define them, and covers a lot of ground in each chapter, from the perspective of a non-mathematician/physicist, at least.
For a shorter, gentler introduction to this material, I recommend R.L. Devaney's "Chaos, Fractals, and Dynamics: Computer Experiments...," which contains BASIC code to allow you to play with these systems on your computer. If that piques your interest enough, you can then turn to Schroeder's book for a broader and fuller treatment of these ideas.

Book Description
The beloved juvenile writer's anonymous and pseudonymous sensation stories were first discovered decades ago by the literary sleuthing of Madeleine Stern and Leona Rostenberg. Now Stern, a recognized Alcott scholar, has selected four thrillers that illuminate Alcott's feminist convictions. These engaging potboilers feature the power struggle between the sexes and colorful, passionate heroines who, ranging from thwarted and abused victims to triumphant conquerors, will beguile a new audience of modern readers.

Book Description
In the Mammoth Room of Charles Willson Peale's Philadelphia museum, the reconstructed skeleton of a mammoth stands beside that of a mouse. This juxtaposition, write Florike Egmond and Peter Mason, is symbolic of the two approaches to history which they seek to reconcile. In The Mammoth and the Mouse: Microhistory and Morphology, Egmond and Mason aim to rescue morphology from abstraction and microhistory from the taint of triviality.
They explore the theoretical relationship between the microhistorical method of paying careful attention to revealing details and the morphological method of looking for homologies among cultural artifacts or texts from different places and times. Drawing on both textual and visual material, the authors offer a series of microhistorical examinations of a surprising variety of phenomena, among them a legal dispute between spouses in sixteenth-century Holland, a curious ritual punishment for capital offenses, and the reassembly of the Peale mammoth skeleton for public display in 1800. Along the way, they offer an extended commentary on structuralism, post-structuralism, microhistory, and new historicism.
"The book succeeds very well, both as a theoretical statement and as an exercise in the method espoused. The authors have made an important advance in the direction of scholarship. The greatest success of the book is in its work of methodological synthesis, its ability to stretch beyond disciplinary boundaries to illustrate new possibilities of morphological analysis that is neither history nor anthropology exactly but a nearly seamless merging of the two. The scholarship is quite up-to-date and superbly employed." -- Edward Muir, Northwestern University

I Begin My Life All Over: The Hmong and the American Immigrant Experience
ASIN: 078641832X |
Book Description
The Hmong were driven out of Laos by the turmoil of the Vietnam War and settled in America in such large numbers that they are now the second largest Southeast Asian population in the United States.
Twelve Hmong immigrants, including a female shaman, an ex-military officer, a reformed gang member, a doctor, and a woman who was snatched from her mountain village at the age of eight, deposited in Laos's French culture and finally returned to Laos years later, tell their stories of struggling with American life while preserving the values of their own ancient culture. The author also considers the 5,000 years of Hmong history and its lasting influence.
Customer Reviews:
A Really Interesting Book .......2007-01-07
The author is a journalist rather than a sociologist, but her book is the best I have read among several about the Hmong in America. These highlanders from Laos were fierce guerrilla warriors in a secret CIA army during the Vietnam War. After the War they were marked for persecution -- or extirpation -- by the Communists and many of them fled the country. Today more than 100,000 live in the US. The Hmong are much admired by American soldiers and CIA agents and their unique animistic culture and efforts to adjust to radically different American life has interested many authors.
The author delves deeply into the life of several Hmong living in California, including studying the language and learning the intricate stitchery used by Hmong women to make their native costumes. She visits Laos with one of them and meets the Hmong in their natural environment. She inserts herself in the story as a painstaking and thorough observer presenting an objective, affectionate, unsentimental portrait of a people she genuinely likes and admires. Her chapter on Hmong history is outstanding: lucid, well-written, and fascinating in its speculations about the origin of the Hmong and their long struggle with more powerful neighbors. She gives throughout a very clear picture of the Hmong's attachment to family and clan -- a collective nature foreign to most Americans.
The Hmong the author describes include, among many, a Americanized young woman who works in a government office, a traditional female shaman, a Hmong gang member, and a former military and political leader. She captures them all with style and grace.
