Book Description

The Scarborough Plan presents a comprehensive, state-of-the-art system for retirement investment planning. Using both professional insight and humor, 401(k) investment advice pioneer, J. Michael Scarborough, carefully leads the reader through every stage of the retirement planning process. The book begins with a working definition of retirement itself, and carefully works its way through the process of realizing retirement goals. Scarborough teaches the reader how to achieve the financial portfolio necessary for a successful retirement plan, and he does so in a frank and functional manner.

In addition to its comprehensive scope, The Scarborough Plan sets itself apart through its attention to accessibility. Unlike the typical thick, dry, and intimidating retirement investment book, The Scarborough Plan was written in the form of an informal conversation with the author himself. Scarborough peppers the text with his own no-nonsense style, sharing insightful -- and often humorous -- anecdotes from his numerous seminars and his work with clients.

1 out of 5 stars Trite, Platitudinous and Banal.......2002-10-19

Scarborough preys on the gullibility and ignorance of the average investor. In addition, his writing style is heavy and dull. Finally: Some of his (favorable) reviews have been written by employees of his company (such as Clay Dietz). My guess these are about authentic as a "Yes" vote for Saddam!

1 out of 5 stars No Wonder...........2002-05-17

Clay Dietz works for Michael Scarborough...no wonder he wrote such a glowing review of this book. I wonder how many other of these 5 stars reviews are posted by employees?

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2002-05-17

This is the worst financial book I have ever purchased.

What makes The Scarborough Plan stand out from a host of other financial planning "how to" books is its informal conversational style peppered throughout with no-nonsense advice, insights, anecdotes and humor. If you have, or are considering, a 401(k) program of your own, then you need to sit down and read The Scarborough Plan!

5 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2001-05-19

This book offers a good, well balanced and easily laid out process for making sense of retirement planning. The big picture is much clearer now. He addressed everything you would need to accomplish in order to successfully retire. And thanks to this book I now have a clear plan.

Thanks for the help

5 out of 5 stars Strong Collection of Short Fiction.......2006-06-01

I read a few of these stories when they were first published, and enjoyed them all. I had a story in the anthology where "Goddamn Redneck Surfer Zombies" first appeared, and I remember feeling incredibly envious when I read Mike Jasper's contribution. He makes the rather off-the-wall premise plausible and fun, then brings the story together with a punch of genuine emotion.

Overall, the stories in this collection range from good to great. The book includes four tales of the Wannoshay, the alien species Mike Jasper has written and developed over the years. The Wannoshay are fascinating in and of themselves, but what makes these tales more powerful is the way Jasper uses the Wannoshay to explore and illuminate his human characters. He takes an unflinching look at both the beauty and ugliness of human nature. I only hope some publisher will eventually pay him to give the Wannoshay their own novel.

"The Disillusionist" is by far my favorite story. Jasper remarks in his comments that he was going for a Gaimanesque villain, and I think he nailed it. The Disillusionist is a wonderful character, as is the nameless protagonist who sets off to bring him in. The Disillusionist is basically a travelling showman with the ability to strip away the lies of our lives, and I loved watching his act, as well as the resulting chaos.

I would love to talk about every story, but I don't know how much space Amazon will give me. In brief, Jasper writes strong stories with a sense of gritty realism. His characters feel genuine, and while some stories have happier endings than others, those endings always feel true to the story.

As a writer, I also enjoyed reading the commentary in which Jasper talks about how the various stories came about, and his thoughts on each one. It adds a nice personal touch to the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gunning For The Buddha.......2005-08-08

The title story in this first print collection by Mr. Jasper is a tale of youth, chaos, time travel and the struggle of the individual to take control of their life and destiny. The protagonist, a young woman with a felony past (along with an international group of other young people) travels time lines and road ways to moments of heightened social discord. It is the woman's goal, the groups' goal, at these moments of chaos, to control the situation and thus lend order to their own chaotic lives. Along the way, lone individuals pretending to enlightenment spread their own form of reconciliation; Buddhas and shamen, medicine men and Jesus figures. This story, filled with rich detail, vivid imagery and historical situation, carries in it not only fast cars and blazing guns, but moments of loss, struggle and enlightenment--bridges we all must cross in our lives.

Book Description

"Even though depression has periodically made me feel that my life was not worth living, has created havoc in my family, and sometimes made the work of teaching and writing seem impossible," writes David Karp, "by some standards, I have been fortunate." Indeed, depression can be devastating, leading to family breakups, loss of employment, even suicide. And it is a national problem, with some ten to fifteen million Americans suffering from it, and the number is growing. In Speaking of Sadness, Karp captures the human face of this widespread affliction, as he illuminates his experience and that of others in a candid, searching work. Combining a scholar's care and thoroughness with searing personal insight, Karp brings the private experience of depression into sharp relief, drawing on a remarkable series of intimate interviews with fifty depressed men and women. By turns poignant, disturbing, mordantly funny, and wise, Karp's interviews cause us to marvel at the courage of depressed people in dealing with extraordinary and debilitating pain. We hear what depression feels like, what it means to receive an "official" clinical diagnosis, and what depressed persons think of the battalion of mental health experts--doctors, nurses, social workers, sociologists, psychologists, and therapists--employed to help them. We learn the personal significance that patients attach to beginning a prescribed daily drug regimen, and their ongoing struggle to make sense of biochemical explanations and metaphors of depression as a disease. Ranging in age from their early twenties to their mid-sixties, the people Karp profiles reflect on their working lives and career aspirations, and confide strategies for overcoming paralyzing episodes of hopelessness. They reveal how depression affects their intimate relationships, and, in a separate chapter, spouses, children, parents, and friends provide their own often-overlooked point of view. Throughout, Karp probes the myriad ways society contributes to widespread alienation and emotional exhaustion. Speaking of Sadness is an important book that pierces through the terrifying isolation of depression to uncover the connections linking the depressed as they undertake their personal journeys through this very private hell. It will bring new understanding to professionals seeking to see the world as their clients do, and provide vivid insights and renewed empathy to anyone who cares for someone living with the cruel unpredictability of depression.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very real and honest look at depression........2007-01-28

I have read so many books on this topic, and this book is, hands down, the best I've read. It isn't overly-clinical, and lets the reader see what this illness is all about through the experiences of fifty depressed people from all walks of life, how they cope, experience with medications, therapists, and how this devastating illness has affected their lives. The author also has an edge in writing this material, as he suffers from depression as well, and shares his own experiences in coping. Insightful, thoughtfully written, it is a must read for depressives, and the people who love them.

5 out of 5 stars The most helpful book on depression I have ever read.......2004-06-16

I borrowed this book from my local library before purchasing it to be sure it wasn't just another one of those preachy books encouraging those of us who struggle with depression to just get over it, that it will eventually subside. David Karp is honest about depression as an illness, which is totally on-point considering he suffers from it himself. The words he has written echo through my head each day, and have helped me in a tremendous way. He analogizes depression as a sort of mental arthritis, something we will just have to learn to live with. He doesn't make false promises of overcoming the problems associated with the illness. He is honest, and describes his own experience in ways that I related to immediately. One of the hardest things about depression is a feeling of isolation because not everyone in our immediate circle of friends can understand it if they've never experienced it. The narratives in this book have helped me more than I can put into words here in the mere fact of knowing I am not the only person to feel this way. I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers with depression.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and profoundly insightful book.......2004-02-21

David Karp's book on depression is written in beautifully simple prose. His own battle with depression is interwoven throughout the stories of others, and the humanity and gentleness with which he portrays both speaks of a generosity of vision which preserves the sanctity of each person's story. There's no sociological-ese to distract from the stories, which is a delight for someone who- though an academic- tires of its exclusionary language. The courage it took to write this book-- as it is a "coming out" book of sorts-- is extraordinary, and that thought rests in the back of your mind as you read it, gathering inspirational power. As someone who has struggled with depression throughout my life, I felt a "resonance" with the souls represented in this book which at times had me in tears. Highly recommended-- both for those suffering from depression as well as academics.

5 out of 5 stars Academic View of Illness.......2002-02-16

Karp is a sociologist who examines depression from a cultural point of view. Folks looking for a "quick cure" are not likely to be satisfied with this particular outing. However, folks looking to understand how society views those with depression, how folks with depression view society, and how the illness can also impact family members ... this is the place to go. I read this book as part of a medical anthropology curriculum ... an ethnography of an illness ... and found it to be quite enlightening. I have been in and out of treatment for depression myself over the years, and finding that so many people had similar experiences of reconstructing their self-view as a result of the illness was quite useful. Again, this book is definitely not a "quick fix" or "feel good" kind of book ... it's one that looks at the nitty-gritty of one of the country's most prevalent illnesses and examines the minutiae therein.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for the "intelligent" depressive.......2001-07-11

While not offering neat/sappy cures for depression (a do this, do that approach), Karp does provide relief merely in his description of experiences someone suffering with depression has...profound insights that ring true for the commonality in dealing with this illness/condition.

As an individual suffering from periodic bouts of major depression, I found his insights mindblowing as I had never attributed these "traits" as part of the depression itself, but as part of my "unusual history." While hard to explain to the "average" and "normal", someone who has undergone the misery of depression would surely find resonance and comfort in Karp's remarkable work.

Lastly, I would recommend not digesting this book DURING a visit to the abyss as it is a bit heady (and usually concentration is a HUGE ISSUE at those times), but definitely read it after the bright lights turn on again.

5 out of 5 stars About This Book.......2005-10-19

Collection of black-and-white photographs. Limited Edition of 3000 copies. The first and only edition. An elegant production by Chris Pichler and Hideyuki Taguchi: Oversize-volume format in square shape. A very tall and slim book. Handsome black silk cloth boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Michael Kenna. Essay, "Michael Kenna and Ratcliffe-on-Soar", by Jeremy Reed, one of the finest living British poets. Brief Biographies appended at the end. In pictorial DJ with black and silver titles on the cover and spine, as issued. "Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station is located in Nottinghamshire, England. Michael Kenna first began photographing the power station in the early 1980's and over the past several years he has visited the site many times, producing a body of work as ominous as it is beautiful. The Ratcliffe photographs take on the tonal quality of a partially lit ecosphere unique to the photographer and his subject. A brilliant manipulator of half-light, Kenna's grainy, spatial topography epitomizes the gray skies of Northern England that were the ubiquitous backdrop to his childhood. Kenna's Ratcliffe photographs create the impression of an atmospherically foggy day, registering the homeostasis of a mood that is a dominant characteristic of his work" (Publisher's blurb). "Michael Kenna has, through his art, opened visual pathways that help redeem eco-damaged or industrially proscriptive landscapes. He is a poet armed with a camera who lyricizes light. He has added the power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar to the continuously expanding geography of imagination" (Jeremy Reed). Some of Kenna's most powerful work. © 2006, ModernRare.com

              Customer Reviews:

              1 out of 5 stars Misleading Book.......2007-05-04

This book is VERY disappointing, and the previous review suggests that it has misled at least one reader. It is impossible to provide "true-life biographical details" for Robin Hood. The best medieval historians have failed to identify a truly convincing prototype for the character, and those prototypes that HAVE been identified exist only as names in court rolls, with no biographies to go with them. Dixon-Kennedy's work has its moments, but it is marred by a tendency to accept anything that has been written by anyone as a true fact about Robin Hood. Particularly egregious is his lengthy "reconstruction" of the "complete" legend, in which he claims to have relied mainly on early ballads and plays of Robin Hood. In fact, he has relied mainly on children's books of the early 20th century, and has thus incorporated characters and events that are not a part of the early or middle-period legends. Many of these characters exist only in a single book, and are clearly the inventions of modern authors. Thus, he may appear to be giving "true-life biographical details," but he is in fact recounting modern, fictional accounts as though they were part of medieval history. Similarly, he has identified characters such as the Sheriff of Nottingham by name, using works of fiction as his sources. It's rather like using Philippa Gregory's novels as the sources for a "Handbook" of Henry VIII.

It all adds up to a very misleading and disappointing "handbook" that will be of very little use to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Enhances the story of Robin Hood, reconstructed from myths, films, folklore, place-names, ballads and more........2006-11-06

Most treatments of Robin Hood are light, semi-fantasy coverages for younger ages, so it's important to note that THE ROBIN HOOD HANDBOOK: THE OUTLAW IN HISTORY, MYTH AND LEGEND is far different, covering not only many true-life biographical details, but rounding out biography with a social and political history of his times. Original research by a long-time mythology researcher enhances the story of Robin Hood, reconstructed from myths, films, folklore, place-names, ballads and more.

                Book Description

In 1975 Brenda and Robert Vale published The Autonomous House, a manifesto offering down-to-earth suggestions for building homes that do not pollute the earth or squander its resources. Their book received tremendous praise from all over the world and was seen as a significant move toward green architecture. Nearly twenty years later, the Vales decided to turn their groundbreaking ideas into reality. The New Autonomous House records the building of a house based on the principles of sustainable resources in the small town of Southwell in the British Midlands. As specialists in green architecture the Vales sought to create an environmentally friendly four-bedroom house that was neither exotic in appearance nor difficult to maintain. Here they document the philosophy, design, and construction of a building that gets its power from the sun and the wind, and produces drinking water from the rain. The book sends a simple but revolutionary message: it is possible to live in an inexpensive house that is kind to the planet and liberates its owner from utility bills. Robert and Brenda Vale have provided a thought-provoking, practical solution to the environmental problems caused by the houses in which we live, a blueprint of green architecture for future generations.

                            Book Description

I WAS THERE WHEN THE WORLD STOOD STILL is a first-person account of how the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, put the dreams and aspirations of an 18 year-old Kansas farm boy on hold for four years and twenty days. In fact the dreams of millions of people from around the world were put on hold for the duration of that global war and all of our lives would be changed forever. The moment of that attack was the beginning of a total World War. I played a very small part in that global conflict that involved more men and women, over more of the world, with more loss of life and more destruction than any other recorded event in the history of the world. Of the 16 million Americans that were involved in that conflict the United States lost almost 300,000 men and another 670,800 suffered non-fatal battle wounds.

This book describes in detail how one Kansas farm boy made the dramatic change from a peace-loving farm lad to a Navy combat pilot in a very short time.

5 out of 5 stars WWII Naval Aviator Veteran's story.......2003-10-05

This is a wonderful book. It is a very interesting story regarding this Naval Aviator's experiences in WWII. The author has included a lot of dates, events, & missions around the world that he & others were involved in. The Depression in the 1940's had a devasting inpact on our world. This is a "must read" if you want to learn how an 18 year-old Kansas farm boy transformed into a Navy Combat Pilot.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Jewish Texans.......2001-04-30

This was an amazing book. I had never even heard of Texas Jewry, but this tought me so much about it. It was so interesting ,and I learned so much. I really recomend this for pleasure reading, or it could be very useful for projects or reports.
