    Book Description

This book investigates whether a lack of wage flexibility is at the root of the unemployment problem in West Germany. In the presence of a skill bias in labor demand, only the choice between higher wage inequality or higher unemployment rates seems to exist. Whether and in what way this line of thought is consistent with the experience of West Germany is scrutinized empirically. The analysis ranges from extensive descriptive evidence on labor market trends to the estimation of a structural model of wage bargaining.

5 out of 5 stars Lucid book in a sharp and concise style.......2007-01-27

David Shirreff was one of the first and remains one of the few journalists to tackle the challenging subject of financial risk. In this book, he collects material from articles he published during the 1990s (a period of astonishing innovation in the field), supplemented by interviews with some of the true luminaries in the areas of financial engineering and financial risk management. Shirreff is a lucid writer with a sharp and concise style. He has the rare gift of making the complexities of finance accessible to a general readership. Therefore, we recommend this book both to financial professionals and to general readers who have an interest in the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Good for finance and non-finance professionals.......2006-02-24

Everything we do with a purpose is necessarily effected by risk. Think of purpose as a benefit or return, and the uncertainty of realizing any such return as risk. We conduct risk versus return assessments in everything we do then. This book, therefore, could interest nearly anyone.

For the street-smart, non-academic business person, I recommend this book as an informative, instructional primer on financial risk. And for the technical professional, it provides refreshing and entertaining insights. Shirreff's writing is easy to understand and enjoyable to read.

Shirreff contends that financial risk was traditionally treated as a measurable, calculable, and manageable factor. Policy makers and business leaders eventually learned that the art and science of risk management are inseparable. Like games of chance, however, risk management is a simple concept to grasp but difficult or impossible to master in all its manifestations. Shirreff clearly, concisely, and in an often colorful way, guides the reader through many of the key concepts as well as specific techniques of risk assessment and management.

I think anyone, whether a financial type or not, would benefit significantly from reading this book - but then that's just my speculation.

5 out of 5 stars An Intelligent and Revealing Look at Risky Follies.......2004-08-26

Dealing with Financial Risk is the best book I have read on taking an up-to-the-moment look at the financial risk that businesses, regulators, governments and markets experience. While many Nobel Prize winners will tell you that the market is efficient and rationally driven, anyone who works in the markets knows better. Mr. Shirreff takes a candid look at the best attempts by theoreticians and practitioners to eliminate risks . . . and reveals all of the ways that these efforts leave many risks in place.

This book is written to appeal to those who like to understand complex issues (such as how to measure the total exposure of a financial institution to derivative risk), people who enjoy reading about a good meltdown (Barings, Long-Term Capital Management and Metallgesellschaft), and those who like to do better by changing practices (such as by employing not only Monte Carlo simulations by also by advanced game playing in light of varying scenarios). This book will be equally rewarding to any of these three types of readers. However, do realize that only if you have all three interests will you find the entire book to be relevant to your interests. Those who are interested in only one of the three areas will be rewarded by finding ections that are pithy as well as accurate.

The amusing on-going story line in the book is that although institutions are taking on vastly more risk than ever before . . . and are not able to really understand and control where they are . . . they are relentlessly trying to convince regulators to let the institutions determine their own capital needs. It's certainly a recipe for disaster. For the most part the regulators have been wary. Let's hope they continue to be.

        Book Description

Dealing with high-stakes risk potentials depends on our ability to come to grips with some easy to understand, yet difficult to apply, criteria for decision. We need to go beyond the façade of pseudo-scientific assessments that cater to special interests. We need to take a fresh, honest look at the only two sensible decision criteria: precautionary avoidance and fatalism. This book shows why scientific assessments of catastrophic risk based on 'averages' don't work, and sets the stage for making the tough choice between precaution and fatalism.

                        Book Description

This introduction to computational fluid dynamics serves as a unique advanced-undergraduate text that brings together Cebeci's lifelong experience as a teacher at the University of California and a senior scientist for Boeing Company. Conservation equations for compressible and incompressible flows are the prime theme. The text concentrates on finite difference and finite volume methods and mostly treats two-dimensional flows, while it also keeps key arguments general enough to apply to the three-dimensional case as well. It also provides methods for solving model parabolic, elliptic and hyperbolic equations, and two chapters address boundary-layer equations. The treatment of the transition from laminar to turbulent flow makes use of the e n method. Further topics are grid generation methods and extensive discussions of the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations. The book is accompanied by a CD including computer programs that have been tested in many practical applications in industrial fluid mechanics engineering.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but beware..........2007-03-03

This is a well written book. The only problem I have with it is that it has a misleading title: Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers: From Panel to Navier-Stokes Methods WITH COMPUTER PROGRAMS. While the book does come with SOME computer programs (ie, FORTRAN source), there are many chapters that don't contain the source code with the included CD. This is pretty bad, especially if you'd like to write your own code. At first I thought that the publisher somehow forgot to write some of the files to the CD, so I contacted one the authors asking if he could send me some of the missing source files. It turns out that I would have to pay an extra $90 to have access to the remaining source code! No way, I'm not doing it (I'm a poor student). This was definitely a frustrating. With $50 you can get yourself a copy of the Fluent student version to validate you're own code!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good for applied CFD with engineering approach. Clear to beginners also.......2006-06-03

I am an aerospace engineer but have been working in experimental research for the last year when my interest in CFD came along.

This book was my first book ever bought in CFD; I went through many others from the library, but I bought this one because of its practical, and still precise and in-depth analysis of numerical methods applied to fluid dynamics.

It also dedicate a chapter to the Hess-Smith panel method applied to 2D aerodynamic bodies and it clearely gives enough details and practical steps to develop and write your own panel method code.

Every chapter has excercices at the end, but mostly, the author accompanies the expemples with codes written in fortran and reported in the CD.

The only thing that sometimes might be noticed (very lightly), are some typos or missing explanations on how he changed the notation.

                            Book Description

This authoritative Companion to eighteenth-century Britain includes essays by nearly forty experts from the UK, Europe, the United States and Canada. It introduces students, teachers and general readers to the developments that led to Britain becoming a great world power, the leading European imperial state, and, at the same time, the most economically and socially advanced, politically liberal and religiously tolerant nation in Europe. The volume examines political developments including the founding of the constitution and political system in 1688 and the development of the party political system. It describes economic and social developments in the towns and country which signalled the advent of 'modern ' society and the cultural advances in the arts, philosophy and the press which greatly interested other European nations. The book also reminds readers that religion remained a powerful force and preoccupation throughout this period and covers the discussions over religious tolerance. There is also a section on the creation of the United Kingdom from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and the serious divisions that still remained. Finally, the book reveals how Britain became a world power, developing and then losing one empire in America but soon acquiring another in India. This Companion is based on recent research and clearly presents the current state of knowledge and interpretation, demonstrating why this period has recently attracted new scholarly initiatives and historical enquiries.

This Concise Companion presents fresh perspectives on eighteenth-century literature and culture. In a series of original essays, it contributes to current debates in the field on subjects as diverse as the public sphere, travel and exploration, scientific rhetoric, gender and the book trade, gardening, and historical versus literary perceptions of life on London streets. It also discusses the changing nature of poetry, drama, periodical essays, the novel, and literary criticism, searching out connections between the remarkable number of new genres that appeared in the eighteenth century. The contributors include both familiar names and newcomers to the field. Each of them combines meticulous scholarship with clear, engaging writing and vivid, innovative perceptions on the relationships between literature and culture. Crossing conventional disciplinary lines, they demonstrate how philosophy, history, politics and social theory both influenced and were influenced by literature in this period.

                                              Book Description

Until recently, osteological studies into ancient diet and health have primarily focused upon human remains. As a result, these areas of research are still in their infancy in the field zoo-archaeology. Animals have paid a heavy price for many major human advances, such as those in agriculture and transport. This use (and often abuse) of animals has left many tell-tale signs in their teeth and bones. Along with the many advantages in animal exploitation have also come major problems for humans. Thus, infectious diseases passed from animals to humans must have long played a significant evolutionary role in the development of society. The zooarchaeological record could provide an extremely important temporal framework for exploring and understanding past and current issues of human health and animal welfare. This volume provides one of the first contributions to the field, and may stimulate many more.
