Book Description
Challenging the prevailing idea that labor markets are governed by universal economic processes, this significant work argues instead that labor markets develop in tandem with social and political institutions, and thus function in locally specific ways. Focusing on the complex social processes that lie at the heart of the labor market--those of labor control, labor reproduction, and labor regulation--the author develops an innovative political economy approach that is sensitive to the ways these processes are locally constituted. He also demonstrates how the geographically uneven development of labor markets is currently associated with a deterioration of working conditions, the trading away of workers' rights and benefits, and a downward spiral in labor standards. Drawing on a critical reading of segmentation and regulation theory, which calls for a simultaneous analysis of economic processes and social institutions, the first part of the book establishes a theoretical case for spatializing labor market theory. The author shows how labor market processes are transformed by the way they operate through space and in place, drawing attention to systemic spatial variability in their structures, dynamics, and modes of social regulation. Presenting illuminating empirical case studies, the second part of the book illustrates some of the ways in which the author's approach to labor market theory can be put to work. Chapters take an in-depth look at skill formation in the context of labor market flexibility, industrial homework and labor market restructuring, workfarist tendencies in labor regulation, and neoliberalism and the geographic reconstitution of labor relations.
Book Description
The return of cultural treasures to their homelands has become the subject of heated public debate in recent years, highlighted by the controversial case of the Elgin Marbles. In this important and pioneering work, Jeanette Greenfield discusses the historical, legal and political issues surrounding a wide cross-section of cases. Extremely readable and highly illustrated, this updated, revised edition includes new chapters on art treasures and museums in post-Soviet Russia, claims to the Vatican for Hebrew manuscripts, and the saga of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Excellent Compendium of Tragic Stories.......2000-04-20
This book, in its second version, includes case studies of 15+ archaeological tragedies. The author and contributing experts document the history of the diaspora of archaeological artifacts from their provenances, the use of these articles in nationalistic and religious contexts, and the struggle for repatriation. This is an excellent book for any archaeologist as it reminds us of the modern context of our work. In addition, students of art history, law, anthropology, and history will find the book useful in its breadth of coverage. I have used this book in curriculum building for undergraduate archaeology students.
Book Description
In the ruins of Hitler's Third Reich, Allied occupiers found millions of paintings, books, manuscripts, and pieces of sculpture hidden in thousands of secret hideaways. This book reveals how the American Military Government in Germany, spearheaded by a few dozen dedicated Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFA&A) officers and enlisted men, coped with restoring Europe's cultural heritage. Caught up in often bitter diplomatic wrangling during and after the war, the American restitution effort struggled to unearth and return what the Nazis had hidden. (Based on the pioneering study of cultural restitution first published in 1985.)

Book Description
Aimed at the one-year general chemistry course, Essential Chemistry: A Core Text for General Chemistry offers a shorter, more compact presentation of topics at the same depth and with the same rigor as other traditional "mainstream" texts. Because the text includes only the core topics that are necessary for a good foundation in general chemistry, students are offered a shorter and less expensive text without sacrificing clarity and comprehension.

the Great American Novel??.......2003-08-22
I have literally never read a greater American novel -- and this includes Faulkner. The Velvet Horn is an overlooked masterpiece. Lytle's use of metaphor and imagery are never self-conscious or affected - they are inextricably bound to the story proper. Not easy reading - even Lytle said it should be read a few times.
Brilliant little known southern agrarian gem.......2002-06-19
The Velvet Horn is one of those rare unknown novels that lies in the dust of recent antiquity ignored by all except those who have to read it in class at the University of the South. The Horn is Lytle's master work. One feels reading it, that all the author's work and talent gelled in this book.
Like Faulkner, and other contemporaries, Lytle strives to embody a rural voice and language from a bygone period in this story, but unlike Faulkner, he is not willfully obtuse. While the language is dense and extremely poetic, one finds it is also carefully economic. Lytle doesn't waste anything. The construction of this book is immaculate.
The story centers around a boy becoming a man and grappling with his family history and the apparent suicide of his father. All of this is set in the years just following the defeat of the south in the civil war in a remote reigon of Tennessee.
While the story is ,on one hand, classically southern gothic, deeper themes of christ like sacrifice and redemption give the novel powerful scope and feeling. This remains one of a few books that I keep returning to because some pages and passages are so rich as to astonish and they continue to open up vistas that only literature can bring.
A southern classic........1997-07-11
The story of a family with dark secrets. I read the book several years ago and I will always remember it as one of the best books I ever read. If Oprah had had her book club in the late 1980's, she would have selected it. I sorry I can't give specifics on the book since my copy is still being shared with friends

They Walked To Freedom 1955-1956: The Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott
ASIN: 1588516342 |
Book Description
Only an insider who felt the pulse and shared the collective agony of those boycotting buses in Montgomery can give an eye-witness account of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. "Inside the Montgomery Bus Boycott - My Personal Story" is that account. After the arrest of Rosa Parks who refused to give her bus seat to a white man, Uriah J. Fields, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph David Abernathy, Edgar D. Nixon and fourteen other persons founded the Montgomery Improvement Association to spearhead a bus boycott. Fields was the original secretary of the MIA. African Americans ended the 382-day long bus boycott and returned to riding integrated buses after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Alabama's segregation laws were unconstitutional. What happened during the bus boycott and in the early days of bus desegregation that included die-hard segregationists bombing of four churches and two parsonages in the wee hours of the morning of January 10, 1957 is the matter of this book. Fields was the pastor of the Bell Street Baptist Church. In his book, Parting the Waters," Taylor Branch writes: "Bell Street Baptist Church suffered the most destruction on the night of the bombs." (p. 200).This church was rebuilt under Fields' leadership.

An Insider's Account of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.......2002-04-01
Please note: This book was published (first printing) on March 21, 2002. The true and full story about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, told by an insider who was a founder and the original secretary of the Montgomery Improvement Association that spearheaded the bus boycott that began the civil rights movement which forced the elimination of legalized segregation and racial discrimination and secured for African American the right to vote in the South, and access to public accomodations, opening housing, and equal education and employment opportunities. Only an insider who felt the pulse and shared the collective agony of those boycotting buses in Montgomery can give an eye-witness account of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. "Inside the Montgomery Bus Boycott - My personal Story " is that account. In one of his personal encounters with Martin Luther King, Jr., the author writes: "On Monday, June 18, I met with King shortly after he, having cut short his vacation in California, returned to Montgomery upon hearing the news that had spread from coast to coast about the charges that I had made about leaders misappropriating MIA funds and my resigning as the secretary of the MIA. I came to his parsonage, located at 309 South Jackson Street, that morning after having talked with him on the telephone about a hour and a half earlier. During our telephone conversation I told him that I would like to come and talk with him in person. He seemed pleased from the tone of his voice and ready to have me talk with him. Later, when he opened the door to let me enter his home, the expression on his face revealed a pleasant conuntenance; however, I would soon learn that he was furious about the statement I had released to the press, and he told me so, in no uncertain terms. No sooner than he closed the door he said, "God damn you! Why in the hell did you put our business in the streets?" (p. 140)

Book Description
The most important technology of the 21st century.
Do a double-take with this one-of-a-kind guide. One of technology's most awe-inspiring and hotly-debated topics-cloning-is made clearer here than anywhere else. It runs the gamut from genetic- and bioengineering, to an even handed analysis of the moral, political, and ethical issues surrounding these technologies.
Claims of cloned babies, the Human Genome Project, and cryogenics continue to create headlines and spur debate
Congress will soon decide whether the federal government should have a say about cloning human cells for medical research
Customer Reviews:
Unique and informed!.......2004-09-13
Having been a human cloning activist since 1997, I expected this book would be another moralistic rehashing of today's contemporary debate.
It certainly covered all those arguments. However, it proved to be amazingly accurate, well researched and informative. This was one of the few books which clearly explained technical details that even I was not aware of--like the chromosonal reasons that made cloning human beings very difficult. (This problem was overcome in Korea by using cells surrounding the woman's egg for nuclear transfer.)
What makes this book truly remarkable is the manner in which it goes beyond explaining both the science and the moral arguments surrounding reproductive and therapeutic cloning. It examines bioengineering animals, the promise and perils of gene therapy, "BioFoods: Frankenfoods or a Cure for Hunger?", how pharming promises to transform medicine and even explores some of the thinking of Transhumanists and science fiction visionaries.
Yes, I objected to the dismal overview of reproductive cloning. However, the authors separated that highly touted debate from other areas where many propogandists frequently use
reproductive cloning and popular Hollywood images like "Boys from Brazil" as a club against serious scientists attempting to do important medical research.
The three pages about me contained a couple small errors, more of nuance than of fact. Having dealt with the press for years, I have found even Time Magazine can profoundly misrepresent one's beliefs. This book did much better.
If you have any doubts regarding any of the above, just type my name "Randolfe" into your search engine or visit www.clonerights.com
If someone wanted to explore a wide swath of emerging scientific technologies, this is the book I would suggest that they read.

Book Description
This important anthology consists of original essays that explore issues in environmental ethics. Some of the essays focus mainly on the interplay between the environment and the interests of today's population while others place considerable importance on our environmental policies and our obligations to generations yet unborn. Some deal mainly with the environmental ties that bind us to the members of our own community whereas others discuss environmental questions against the backdrop of our duties to people who live in distant nations. Still others inquire into the moral status of the nonhuman denizens of the earth, both animals and plants; indeed, sometimes it is the earth itself whose moral status is the object of inquiry. In short, the essays clearly examine a rich variety of concerns about the environment.
