Helpful Advice for Any Age.......2003-09-05
Mr. Dilenschneider has written a fine book based on his own experiences and those of his friends and network that is mostly as applicable to 30 year olds as to 50+ year olds.
He's at his best when he's describing his own successful experiences in the public relations field. The sections on how to leave your current job, get a new job, how to become a consultant, how to get clients and how to handle public relations are spot on. They are worth the price of the book. However, if you are not interested in those sections, you will probably be disappointed in this book.
I particularly recommend chapter 9 "Bridging the Generation Gap" for its fine material on how to stay up-to-date with and relevant to younger people, regardless of what your relationship is with them (whether boss, subordinate or child).
Some of the book didn't quite work for me, such as the "dress for success" advice from two of Mr. Dilenschneider's haberdashers. As a result, I almost stopped reading the book before I got to chapter 5, when the helpful advice began to kick in.
If you want to understand the heart of the 50+ perspective in the book, you really only need to read chapter 9. If you think you are going to have age-related job issues, then other chapters come into play. As a result, I suggest that you check this out at the library before purchasing it.
After you finish, think about how your life can be filled with expanding choices and potential . . . while you feel excited and rewarded by how you spend your time. Then, spend some time exchanging ideas with others who are younger and older than you to see what their perspectives are.
Amazing!.......2003-01-21
This book should be #1 for anyone in the market for a job, not just those looking for a career change. After 6 months of trying, I nailed a job on my first interview after reading this book. The advice is totally relevant to this economy's job market, and I especially appreciated the tips on getting and maintaining positive control of interviews and meetings. I can't imagine there's a better book out there.
Helpful and encouraging.......2002-12-05
"50 Plus, Critical Career Decisions for the Rest of Your Life," while written for those in their fifth decade, presents sound practical advice for persons of any age. Particularly helpful are the chapters devoted to how to move up in your profession, how to do your own public relations, and how to determine when it is time to change your job. In this, the author's third book offering advice to persons in specific age groups (the first was the well received "The Critical 14 years of Your Professional Life"), he devotes more time to the tactics, strategies, rewards, and pitfalls of striking out on your own than he did in his previous volumes. Throughout this latest work Dilenscneider not only tells the reader "how to do it," but his consistently upbeat approach also leaves one with the feeling that "it can be done."
A Career Guide for everyone!.......2002-11-12
50 Plus! is a relevant to-the -point, no nonsense guide that applies to all those in the work force who want that extra "edge" to achieve their goals. Every page offers something of value to the reader. It covers the "in's and out's" of business from the hiring interview, to how to leave a job and all the stops in between..resumes, creating an image, business relationships, even how to conceptualize and start your own business. Although this book is titled 50 Plus!,and indeed provides 8 rules for "getting back in the game",it offers practical information that can be used at any age.
This is a well written "must read" for everyone and a great book to keep as a reference.
buy this one ASAP.......2002-10-17
you will not find a book with more advise, even if you are under 50... it's incredible what basic steps we forget to take but Bob Dilenschneider reminds us in a very thoughtful volume that should be read by everyone.

Book Description
The conditions for successful manufacturing have changed considerably in recent years. New technologies such as information technology and biotechnology are considered important players in eradicating poverty in developing countries, but the risky nature of projects based on new technologies forces firms to raise investment capital by means other than conventional capital markets.
This book examines the role of venture capital institutions in financing technology-based ventures both in developed and developing countries. It also explores that part of venture capital activity which is hitherto vastly under-researched; namely the ability of venture capital institutions to render a whole host of value-added support functions. These include setting up management teams and designing strategic plans for fledgling enterprises. The latter issue is operationalized through a series of carefully chosen case studies.
Financial Systems, Corporate Investment in Innovation, and Venture Capital will be a valuable text for scholars and students of the theory and practice of financing innovation. It will also be a valuable source for governments, NGOs, financial institutions and multilateral agencies interested in the practicalities of promoting technology-based small and medium enterprises.

Book Description
The Second Edition of
Economics of Water Resources: From Regulation to
Privatization updates and expands the exposition of the authors' central theses concerning:
- the integration of water quantity-quality issues, and the treatment of water as a multi-product commodity, with the market playing the major role in the determination of water quality-discrimination pricing;
- the drawbacks of public control, regulation and enforcement, and the need to expand privatization of water supply and of water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure their appropriate, adequate, development and modernization through increased reliance on private capital;
- the unification and centralization of water management at river basin level in order to handle effectively the expanding pressures for water availability, for the evaluation of waterborne disease, for extensive and effective pollution abatement as well as for coping with the related issues of soil erosion, siltation in streams, channels and reservoirs, protection against stress from drought and floods, and with myriad problems relating to the environment, recreation and navigation.
While expanding and updating the underlying data, the authors maintain the basic division of the book into four parts. Part I presents the conceptual framework within which are examined the interacting elements in the management of water resources and the role of market in water pricing and in quality-graded quantity of water. Part II focuses on water quality control, on the nature and impact of pollution, on water recycling and reuse, and on the prevailing policy instruments. Part III points to the deficiencies of engineering solutions in the choice of public expenditures needed for the construction of water systems and stresses the role of privatization and of centralization at the level of river basins. Part IV underlines the need for coordinating all supply programs, projected demand, recycling and reuse.
Economics of Water Resources: From Regulation to Privatization probes the fundamental concepts concerning the regulation and privatization of water resources, of water pricing, of public policies concerning the allocation of water supplied to users, and examines all of the issues involved in a truly
market-determined framework. It aims to inform and prepare all persons interested in the study and management of water problems. The book can be used in courses on water resource management and planning, economics of water resources, or as a basic reference work on water resources in general.

Book Description
The common language of genius: Eureka!
While the roads that lead to breakthrough scientific discovery can be as varied and complex as the human mind, the moment of insight for all scientists is remarkably similar. The word "eureka!", attributed to the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes, has come to express that universal moment of joy, wonder-and even shock-at discovering something entirely new. In this collection of twelve scientific stories, Leslie Alan Horvitz describes the drama of sudden insight as experienced by a dozen distinct personalities, detailing discoveries both well known and obscure. From Darwin, Einstein, and the team of Watson and Crick to such lesser known luminaries as fractal creator Mandelbrot and periodic table mastermind Dmitri Medellev, Eureka! perfectly illustrates Louis Pasteur's quip that chance favors the prepared mind. The book also describes how amateur scientist Joseph Priestley stumbled onto the existence of oxygen in the eighteenth century and how television pioneer Philo Farnsworth developed his idea for a TV screen while plowing his family's Idaho farm.

Paradigm Shift... Plateaus of Human thought.......2007-06-30
It seems that the fellow who invented the wheel is forgotten.
The first man to use symbol to represent thought in drawing is forgotten as well.
It has gone badly for many such men, who seem sent to
the world to suffer because they can think or see things just a little different.
Stories like these need to be told. They don't happen as often as we might like
then to. We also should be ashamed of how some of these men have been treated
or rewarded for their gifts to history. Don't think that Christ, Socrates and Gandhi
are sometimes as important as printing presses and Linotype machines
in the spread of culture and it's advance. People are far from perfect
and great men are still mostly just men like all other men.
The trouble and pain we put these fellows through in our doubts
and resistance is hard on them.
Gandhi and Einstein were alive at the same time as Hitler and Mandelbrot.
Good and bad coexist and we need more than a simple Paradigm Shift
to make people listen to better ways when they come.
The author recognized that Mandelbrot was as important as Einstein...
This book sucks!.......2006-01-18
The basis of the work is to explore the immense and quite sudden breakthroughs of some of the greatest scientists of all recorded time. While the book has an interesting premise, it is rather unorganized, with little or no transition connecting chapters and includes much extraneous detail that leaves the reader to determine what slight pertinence it may contain to the matter at hand. It is written unscholarly language, with no visual aids, and is maybe a tough read for some simply because it is written so poorly. I would give it 0 or 1/2 star if I could.
Great Reading Piece!.......2006-01-07
It's a great scientific breakthrough! Two thumbs Up!
perhaps appropriate for Middle School.......2004-10-13
Anyone looking for anything beyond the most basic and overly simplified introduction to great scientists should look elsewhere. Not only is this book written on a very basic level, but it provides no visual aids to assist the reader in understanding complex ideas that very often have powerfully visual/tactile components; for example, the chapter on the periodic table makes frequent reference to earlier models but provides no reproduction of them to illustrate the comparative discussion. Throughout this book, it seems written in a rush and published on the cheap.
Lack any eueka moments.......2003-11-20
This is a decent light history of some great scientific breakthoughs. While is contains a few interesting tidbits, it lack any sense of eureka. Not exaclty the exciting read it purports to be.

Book Description
As the #1 topic in bioethics, cloning has made big news since Dolly's announced birth in 1998. In a new book building on his classic, Who's Afraid of Human Cloning?, pioneering bioethicist Gregory E. Pence continues to advocate a reasoned view of cloning. Beginning with his surreal experiences as an expert witness before Congressional and California legislative committees, Pence analyzes the astounding recent progress in animal cloning; the coming surprises about human cloning; the links between animal, stem cell, and human cloning; embryo politics; and other hot topics like artificial wombs and transgenic animals.

Relentless battering with a single view.......2005-07-29
Many questions can be asked about cloning, especially about
human cloning. Can it be achieved? Is it right to allow it at
all? How much control ought governments to exercise? Will
cloned humans have special medical needs, and how can these
be addressed? Finally a scientific question, why is cloning
not a common means of reproduction in animals?
Gregory Pence concentrates in his book on the moral and
legal aspects, disposing fairly rapidly of any doubts readers
may have about the technological feasibility of human cloning,
and largely dismissing the possibility that cloning may lead
to any special medical problems. He ignores the scientific
question entirely, though it can be regarded as the most
interesting one for evolutionary biologists and biochemist
concerned with evolution. There is no sign that he is even
aware of the discussions that have gone on in evolutionary
circles: John Maynard Smith pointed out that the advantage
for an individual of passing on her entire genome to her
offspring is so great that there must an advantage of at
least a factor of two to explain why nearly all animal species
maintain a male sex. It is not difficult to think of small
advantages of sexual reproduction, but a factor of two or
more is huge, and by no means easy to explain. A few species
may have experimented with cloning, but the bdelloid rotifers
are the only class of animals to have adopted it as a standard
system of reproduction, and to have maintained it over vast
spans of evolutionary time.
Rotifers aside, the near universality of sexual reproduction
indicates that there must be a substantial cost to cloning.
Even if we cannot exactly identify the reasons for this cost,
we can hardly doubt that it must exist, and if human cloning
were ever adopted on a large scale it surely have effects on
the health of cloned individuals. If we are just talking about
a few clonal births per year in the whole world, then this
probably has no importance, but Pence is willing to contemplate
a moment when "cloning a human embryo becomes something
that any high school student can do in a lab with a few
chemicals, a microscope, human sperm, and a few eggs."
Pence writes fluently and well, but it is already clear from
the first pages what the conclusion is going to be -- that
human cloning is a Good Thing -- so there are no surprises
and no suspense. As a series of newspaper articles a
relentless battering with arguments for a single point of
view might work well, but strung out to 200 pages it becomes
tedious. Nonetheless, I learned some interesting information.
Like many people I had read that Dolly's early death was due
to unusually short telomeres that caused her to be born
prematurely old. Apparently this was a myth, and the later
observation that cloned calves have unusually long telomers
did not receive the same publicity. Pence argues convincingly
that Dolly's death was iatrogenic: after being treated as a pet,
taught to play party tricks like standing on her hind legs, and
overindulged with food, she became overweight and unhealthy,
and had to be put down.
An Unlikely Coalition.......2005-07-25
Since Dolly's cloning, successful clonings have been done on multiple calves, lambs, mice, pigs, rats, Holstein cows, bulls, horses, cats, racing mules and more. The research teams have been from Texas, Kansas, Connecticut, Idaho, Scotland, Japan, Taiwan, France and elsewhere. The vast majority of clones have been normal. Dolly's early death was caused by lifestyle factors which led to an early viral infection, obesity, hip dysplasia and arthritis.
Living up to his reputation as a relentless advocate of cloning, Pence sorts out pseudoscience and nonsense from fact. The antagonistic fight over embryonic stem cells is an unfortunate distraction, considering that human cloning's main use is merely the next step in the treatment of infertility. This outstanding book elegantly summarizes the science (lay readers no problem) and the issues opposed to cloning. They are: Cloning is an evil practice in itself, inherently destroys the dignity of the child created, is incompatible with the sanctity of life, is against the will of God, inherently dehumanizes children and treats them as commodities, evil because one kind of being is being used as a resource for another, psychologically bad in some way to the child, genes of the cloned child may have some hidden abnormality, and finally, cloning carries with it long term implications for society.
For the Christian Right, all the above arguments are extrapolations of the idea that God makes babies, that God should decide how and when they come, not humans - plus the assumption that God wouldn't want humans cloning babies. God, himself, has remained characteristically silent on the matter.
Their overwhelming objections to therapeutic cloning are moralistic, theoretical, theological and philosophical, rife with unsubstantiated psychological speculation. This is not the first time scientists have had to tread their way through the debris of this type of armchair speculation en route to the lab. The problem with falling back on moral arguments is that instead of being based on empiric evidence, they are grounded on little more than a cultural belief system - anything can be asserted, with the expectations that others will agree.
To me, the immorality of ignoring possible definitive treatments for relentless disease processes is immense compared to that potential immorality due to speculative ethical objections.
Pence very thoroughly debates each of these arguments, and briefly mentions the soul. He simply says that the growth continuum of an embryo as it progresses to birth does not exhibit any sudden changes in momentum - signs of a "quickening" of any sort - before moving on.
Three groups form an unlikely coalition against cloning, led by the Christian Right. Egalitarians (the democratic left) form the second part of the coalition. They fear that genes determine variations in abilities and regard any new biological inequality as especially pernicious. The third group is represented by environmentalism. As the biotech industry tries to help in feeding an increasing world population, environmentalists call engineered products "Frankenfood" and throw up roadblocks every step of the way. Similarly, these Bio-Luddites are against all aspects of stem cell manipulation.
This book continues to build interest as it progresses to the politics of cloning. Although only 2% of the population of Germany, France, Belgium, and Holland regularly attend church, many of them fit into the egalitarian and environmentalist groups. This tiny issue (relative to real world problems) has captured a disproportionate share of attention throughout the world, to the extent that a resolution was brought up before the UN to ban human cloning (not passed).
In summary, this author is a strong advocate of all aspects of advanced biotechnological engineering who writes about WHEN these things are going to come about, not IF. Even though the reader may disagree with many of his conclusions, he/she will gain a new concept of the ignorance that pervades the public view and a realization that this is truly a battleground of worldviews in conflict. He describes the opposition as a jihad launched by the Bush administration, together with the Christian Right, the egalitarian group, and environmentalists.
Brilliant, provocative and completely engrossing, "Cloning After Dolly" presents with penetrating insight the full picture of human cloning today. Highly recommended.
Scilitera.com Review..........2005-07-24
Back in 1997 Gregory Pence argued in "Who's Afraid of Human Cloning?" that pro-life advocates and political conservatives were wrong in suggesting that everyone was against human cloning, and that by allowing certain advances in cloning there would not be a slippery slope towards the commercialization and disrespect of human life.
Now in the follow up to his 1997 book, "Cloning After Dolly: Who's Still Afraid?", Pence reviews the battle over cloning since the days of Dolly. He argues for the cloning of animals and pets, embryo and therapeutic cloning to cure the diseased, and reproductive cloning as another tool for those who cannot give birth to their own children.
What makes Pence special in the world of cloning ethics is his long standing support of human reproductive cloning. It is argued that no one has had the public presence in favor of cloning to produce human children as Pence has. His message is clear and simple; cloning is a tool, just like a hammer, a knife, or any other common tool used in everyday life, just because a few decide to use it for evil does not mean it is not helpful for millions of others, and does not mean we should ban it.
While many books on cloning have been published within the last few years, with most being clones of each other, what makes Pence's newest stand out is his style. He draws on common everyday examples of cultural significance, including movies, books, television and the like. He is not happy with just producing the usual academically derived argument on why cloning should or should not be permitted. His style makes the book read less like a textbook and more like an informal discussion, albeit with a sufficient amount of intellect.

Brilliant.......2005-03-20
Once again this author has given the reading public a book that cuts through the media hype, superstition, and emotionalism that has polluted debate on human cloning and genetic engineering. He discusses the science of cloning in a manner that will be understandable to readers who are not specialists in biotechnology, and counters successfully the moral and ethical arguments against cloning, particularly human reproductive cloning. But the book is not only about finding counterarguments against human cloning. The author understands that in addition to these, one needs to make a positive, constructive case for human cloning. He does so in this book, in fact devotes an entire chapter to it. Most importantly, the author refrains from the vituperation that can frequently accompany discussion on genetic engineering, and has given the reader a book that is both detailed and broad in scope.
Those of us who strongly support research into biotechnology have known for some time that there would be a backlash against it. What we did not know is that this backlash would occur so soon, believing that it would take place maybe a few decades from now. Nevertheless it is upon us, and every effort should be made to fight against the ignorance, disinformation, and false platitudes that are now dominating discussion on cloning and biotechnology, as well as other areas of technology. The inspiration and common sense needed for this fight can be found in this book, and in great abundance.
Truth Stands On Its Own!.......2005-01-25
"Cloning After Dolly: Who's Still Afraid?" is a brilliant and original work. Pence's book may be a mixture of fact, opinions and predictions. However, he has a great ability to think outside of the box, to ask questions, which once they are asked, are obvious extensions of the issue being discussed.
Pence brings a broad background to this discussion. That is reflected in his publishing resume. He is a Professor at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. His books include such titles as: "Classic Cases in Medical Ethics: Accounts of the Cases That Have Shaped Medical Ethics, With Philosophical, Legal, and Historical Backgrounds.";"Designer Food"; "Brave New Bioethics"; and "Re-Creating Medicine".
He uses cloning as a lens and as a tool to examine people's attitudes toward everything from genetically engineered foods and artificial wombs to animal rights and the treatment of transgenic animals including a chimpanzee believed to be half-human (Oliver, the humanzee).
Pence extrapolates the inconsistencies of moralists more obsessed with human cloning while ignoring real social problems like alcohol consumption and drug use by pregnant women and/or collaboration between anti-abortion counseling services and adoption agencies that charge up to $50,000 for the unaborted child.
This book may be a mixture of fact, opinion and prediction. However, no one can deny that Pence has a great gift for asking questions and framing old issues in a new context.
The reader is unlikely to agree with many of Pence's opinions and projections. (I certainly didn't!) However, the nearly twenty pages of numbered resources, indexed in each chapter via numbers, provide a rich resource for anyone to further research ideas attacked or embraced by Pence.
For that reason , this is certainly an irreplaceable resource for academics and students who are seriously researching cloning and the social/political/ethical debates surrounding it.
