A Guide to Taking Control.......2004-06-16
In life we are often presented with challenges. We can take control of those challenges or we can let those challenges control our minds and emotions. In this era of rapidly changing job and work environments, many people find themselves faced with job losses or underemployment. In an excellent treatment of the issue of emotional responses to career change, Diane Wilson guides individuals through the process of taking control of their careers and of career transitions. Diane's book, Back in Control, deals with the emotional side of job hunting, and, therefore, fills a real hole in the existing literature. Diane's book will aid self-awareness by showing people that they are not alone in experience a wide range of confusing emotions when faced with career moves. But she goes beyond just illustrating the problems; she also offers a variety of potential solutions to the problems encountered in career transitions.
Highly readable and incredibly useful.......2004-06-12
"This book is a rare treasure in that it goes beneath the surface to grapple with the real psychological and social effects of unemployment. Diane Wilson provides a "roadmap"of the emotional terrain one is likely to encounter in successfully navigating a career transition. Awareness, acceptance and action ... her three pronged approach helps us to transcend counter-productive knee-jerk reactions and find our way safely to the other shore."
Help and Hope For The Emotionally Unemployed.......2004-06-11
"This book offers something different from the typical job search book--hope. Reading it is like having an ally in your corner-a source of support, comfort, fresh perspectives, and practical wisdom. I recommend it to anyone who is struggling with the frustrations of a career transition."

textbook.......2006-11-14
I am currently taking a geophysics course and this book is a required textbook. I am finding this book to be helpful but hard to understand at times. Though it is an excelent resource for geophysics students.
Major points in favor of the recommended textbook.......2005-02-16
* It includes the recent progress of Solid Earth as huge volume of geophysical book (685 pages) and detail discussion under 12 Chapters of Solid Earth and Global Geophysics as:
1. Introduction, pp. 1-3
2. Tectonics on a sphere: the geometry of plate tectonics, pp. 5-40.
3. Past plate motions, pp.43-94.
4. Seismology Measuring the interior, pp. 100-186.
5. Gravity, pp.193-230
6. Geochronology, pp. 193-230.
7. Heat, pp. 269-323.
8. The deep interior of the Earth, pp. 326-381.
9. The oceanic lithosphere: ridges, transforms, trenches and oceanic islands, pp. 391-493.
10. The continental lithosphere, pp. 509-602.
11. Appendixes on used mathematics , units and functions, pp.615-654
12. Glossary, pp.655-666.
* Following the detail discussion from the point of mathematical derivation and attractively illustrated pictures on given above issues, solutions are given for pedagogical problems following each subsection. For example, two problem solutions under the Chapter 2 are given for calculation of relative motion at a plate boundary (see page 21) and calculating rotational vector (see Page 24). After the well-defined problems and provided easy-going solutions, finally 11 more questions are provided at the end of Chapter 1 (see pp.37). At the end of Chapter 1, 43 references are listed just for related issues of Plate Tectonics. The reference list includes a selection not from best-known Journals (e.g., Science and Nature) but also publications from past (1971) to present (2004). From the illustrated part of proposing book, it is a good evidence for what the suggested book is both friendly interactive and pedagogically well illustrated.
* The textbook is being used in number of Universities in courses to teach Solid Earth. Among those universities through the world are the following:
* Department of Earth Sciences, University of Southern California-USA
* Department of Earth Sciences, Simon Fraser University, CANADA.
* Department of Geological Sciences, Queen's University at Kingston, ENGLAND
* Department of Geological Sciences, University of Canterbury, NEW ZELAND.

Book Description
Geophysics is a broad subject that encompasses not only the physics of the Earth, but also the physics of the atmosphere and oceans. The heart of geophysics, however, is the theory of the solid Earth. The Solid Earth is a general introduction to the study of modern physics of the solid Earth, including the workings of both the Earth’s surface and its deep interior. The book begins with a brief historical introduction to developments in geophysics. The next chapter discusses the important theory of plate tectonics, and is followed logically by a chapter on geomagnetism and palaeomagnetism. Subsequent chapters deal with the subjects of seismology, gravity, radioactivity and the age of the Earth and heat flow in the Earth. The book concludes with chapters on the physics of the oceanic and continental lithospheres. The emphasis throughout the discussion is on basic physical principles rather than instrumentation or data handling. Many helpful worked examples are given in the text, and, in addition, there are problems of various degrees of difficulty at the end of each chapter. Appendices explain more advanced mathematical topics and theories of seismology for mathematically inclined students.
Customer Reviews:
Solid Text - Physics Oriented.......2001-11-06
This is indeed a fine text. I think it is easier to read and work through if one has a strong background in physics (vs. geology) as the methodology is quite similar to the standard approach in physics, i.e. make a conjecture based on some physical intuition, attempt to derive relevant equations from basic principles, and then apply those equations. Geology is typically more descriptive and slightly less rigorous so I would imagine someone approaching this text from a geology dominated background might have a harder time reading it than a person coming to geophysics from physics or math.
Outstanding Text.......2000-05-26
This is an outstanding text that is widely respected. Before I developed my own notes, I used it in my classes at the University of Oklahoma. Fowler is very clear in her explanations and coverage. The first review here reads like a disgruntled student and does this fine book a disservice.
Hard to read, lacks examples.......2000-04-29
This book supplies a lot of essential equations for geophysics but is terribly boring. The problems at the end of the chapter have few examples to offer any help with the problems. This book is overly concerned with derivation and not concerned enough with clear, easy to follow explanations.

Evagrius of Pontus: The Greek Ascetic Corpus (Oxford Early Christian Studies)

Book Description
Situated in a period that witnessed the genesis of institutions that have lasted to this day, this path-breaking study looks at how ancient Christian women, particularly in Asia Minor and Egypt, initiated ascetic ways of living, and how these practices were then institutionalized. Susanna Elm demonstrates that--in direct contrast to later conceptions--asceticism began primarly as an urban movement, in which women were significant protagonists. In the process, they completely transformed and expanded their roles as wife, mother, or widow: as Christian ascetics, they became `virgin wives', `virgin mothers', and `virgin widows' - with all the legal and economic implications of such a dramatic shift. As importantly, though, Christian men and women ascetics lived together. As `virgins of God' they created new families `in Christ'. No longer determined by their human bonds or human sexuality, they were `neither male nor female'. Finally, the book demonstrates how ascetic bishops - today known as saints - eventually `reformed' these early models of communal, ascetic life by dividing the `virgins of God' into monks and nuns and thus laid the foundation for the monasticism we know today.

Late!.......1999-06-09
The Appendix of this title is more important than the body of the book itself because for the first time the appendix translates into English from the 1498 Latin a concept not brought out again until the late 1800's and early 1900's when the cuneiform texts of some of the oldest writings are translated, about characters that should at least be studied to see if indeed they were actual historical characters. The concept was of course of one ancient and main historical character stealing something from another contemporary, in the case of the cuneiform texts the stealing of the __ME's__ of ancient Sumerian/Babylonian history, and in 1498 the writer, wherever he got his material speaks of a most ancient charater "taking his son Jupiter Belus along with the colonies, __S T O L E__ the rituals of" -another ancient and main character also of what purports to be of the most ancient and important of historical characters. Why the concept of stealing ME's or "rituals" neither of which are defined except as being critically important! Let's hope Lady Southerland who did the actual translation and her husband/author Mr.Asher and their publisher decide to give us the complete translation of the entire work along with the later but still very old Italian edition.
