5 out of 5 stars Are you a Sales Pro Frustrated by Voicemail?.......2000-11-22

Here's a book that not only offers great ideas, but sets some outstanding 'rules' to follow when getting caught up in voicemail. It's a quick read and the only book available on this topic. You'll be very glad you own this.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and effective!.......2000-05-17

I really enjoyed this quick read that allows you to apply several techniques to any industry. Rich with examples in a common sense format. Highly recommended to Sales Managers who deal with salespeople and their customers.

"Paul LeBon has his fingers on the pulse of modern business. "VoicemailHell" goes beyond the mechanics of flow charts and phone systems to the real power of voicemail. It provides simple solutions-human impact solutions-that will help you improve communications with employees, strengthen business relationships with clients, and effectively manage your time. Not since the "One Minute Manager" has a business book packed such a punch!"

5 out of 5 stars And I thought I knew everything about voicemail........2000-03-18

As a telecommunications manager for a large firm, voice messaging is one of my headaches. This book is a great help to people who fumble, mutter, speak in rapid fire, or just get nervous leaving voicemail messages. As the author says, all the telecomm industry has ever done is give out flow charts showing people which button to push for which function. This bok finally shows people how to communicate, not just press buttons!

5 out of 5 stars This book has increased my effectiveness.......1999-12-04

Bravo to Paul LeBon for this no-nonsense, easy-to-apply productivity maximizer!

I had spent the past couple of years complaining that technology is turning us all into slaves. There's so much information to keep up with. There are always so many responses and answers demanded of us to supply, that I had been feeling like I was living at the mercy of the technology that was supposed to be making my life easier.

"Escape from Voicemail Hell" is crammed with powerful ideas on how to harness the power of your voicemail to serve you, not the other way around. I have learned how to get people to leave me more concise and thought-out messages, how to approach my callbacks strategically, and how to get the information I want and need from others with a lot less effort.

I didn't even realize how much I needed this book until I picked it up. Not only do I see how much more effective I am by following its principles, but my boss and my clients have made positive comments to me, as well. I've been amazed by how simple, yet powerful it has been to turn LeBon's advice to my advantage. I highly recommend this book. I've gotten so much out of it.

Book Description

Over recent years there has been rapid consumer-led growth in investing in socially responsible companies to the extent that it has had an influence on corporate policies. New regulations recognise the public interest by requiring all pension funds to declare their ethical policy. Investors can no longer just consider the financial aspects of a company before investing but also have to consider the complex world of ethical investments.

Should the ethical policy take precedence over the financial aspects?
Should policies be inclusive or exclusive?
What percentage of a company's income has to come from unacceptable sources before the source is excluded?
Should any exclusion policy also extend to those involved in selling or transporting goods deemed unacceptable?

This is the first book to look at socially responsible investment from the perspective of the institutional investor, who will be led through the complex dilemmas of socially responsible investment with practical examples and advice.

Download Description

Over the past decade, socially responsible investment (SRI) has changed from being a niche market to become a core consideration for mainstream investors. As such, pension fund advisers, trustees of charitable foundations and other investment professionals want to understand this new phenomenon. Up to now they have lacked any reference book to teach them what they need to know about SRI. This gap is now filled by the publication of Socially Responsible Investment: A Global Revolution, the first book on SRI specifically written for investment professionals and their clients. The book will also help business executives and business schools looking at better corporate governance and business ethics.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable primer for laymen. deep immersion for practitioners.......2005-06-04

Amazing research yields inside details and direct quotations from the leaders and frontline participants in Socially Responsible Investing. The book discusses institutional and individual investors and explores the different constraints and preferences of those constituencies. Traces the history of SRI in the US and Britain then follows the idea as it is picked up and implemented around the globe. The book explores how the toolkit of social investors (exclusionary or aversion screening, positive screen, shareholder activism) is adapted to the character of specific national markets. Very honest and thorough treatment of whether there is a "performance penalty" to SRI makes a more convincing pro-SRI case than other books I've read that were overly glib. Extremely valuable read to come up to speed on history, issues, approaches.

    Book Description

This book comments on fifty key judgments which the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance have given on European Community environmental law. For each judgment, the facts and procedures are described, followed by an extract of the essential parts of the judgment and a commentary which places the judgment in its legal, environmental and political context and develops the lines of reasoning of the Court. The cases selected cover all substantive and procedural aspects of Community environmental law, as regards the provisions of the EC Treaty, horizontal problems, water and air, products and noise, nature protection, waste management and procedural questions.

                          Book Description

From H.G. Wells to Star Trek, audiences have been captivated by the notions of time travel, time warps, space warps, and wornholes. But science fiction is not the only realm where these concepts thrive. An active group of general relativists and quantum field theorists has produced a considerable body of serious (thought admittedly speculative) mathematical and physical analyses of the wormhole system. Now, with this fascinating book, readers can explore in depth the science behind the science fiction. Drawing on pivotal work by Einstein, Wheeler, Morris, Thorne, Hawking, and others, Matt Visser charts the development and current state of Lorentzian wormhole physics. Dr. Visser shows that by pushing established physical theories to their limits, it is possible to deduce the physical properties of such exotica as wormholes and time travel. The physical framework he uses is derived from one of the major research frontiers of modern theoretical physics: quantum gravity-the intersection of classical Einstein gravity and quantum field theory. Physicists, students of general relativity, cosmology, quantum physics, or any interested reader with a background in physics wil find this a provocative introduction to an exciting and active topic of ongoing research.

Some of the words in this book have appeared in movies and science fiction stories, but in this book they take on a mathematical/scientific meaning, thanks to the efforts of the author. Although the concepts in the book are still far-removed from experimental verification, one must credit the author with writing of a book that may be standard reading in centuries to come. When reading the book, one can only hope that its ideas, or some similar to them, will eventually allow humans to traverse time and space routinely. The reader will need a strong background in general relativity and quantum field theory to really appreciate the book, but after reading it will obtain a solid understanding of what might be calle, in the words of the author, "non-boring" physics.

After a brief overview of general relativity and quantum field theory, the author devotes the first part of the book to the history of wormhole physics. I was surprised to learn that the study of wormholes goes as far back as 1916 in paper by the physicist L.Flamm. But it was the desire of A. Einstein and N. Rosen to build a geometrical model of an elementary particle that is finite and singularity-free that set the tone for the research that continues to this day. Their ideas are reviewed in detail, and the author shows that viewing elementary particles as they did predicts they have internal structure, contrary to experiment. The contributions of J.A. Wheeler, namely his interest in topological issues in general relativity, and his geon/spacetime foam ideas are discussed also. The role of wormhole physics in developing a quantum theory of gravity, via the quantization of weak field gravity and the subsequent appearance of gravitons is treated also. The author lists the things that be done with quantized linearized gravity and gives references for research that counters the idea of spacetime foam. "Back-of-the-envelope" calculations are given for the importance of quantum fluctuations in the gravitational field at Planckian scales. A very interesting, and critical discussion is given of topology changes of spacetime via quantum fluctuations. The author states (but does not prove) various theorems regarding the topology of spacetime if a Lorentz metric is put on it. These results are pretty restrictive in limiting the existence of certain topology changes, but as the author remarks, one can abandon the idea of spacetime being everywhere-Lorentzian if one gives up the strong equivalence principle, an idea he clearly is not comfortable with. Given his remarks, it is interesting to ask whether quantum fluctuations could force a violation of the strong equivalence principle. The author does consider the role of quantum tunneling in changing spacetime topology, but concludes that it is not a meaningful question. However, he does devote a brief paragraph to the consideration of an energy-dependent effective topology which is the one of relevance to physics. Based on the "quantum claustrophobia" effect arising from the tendency of a particle to avoid small regions (i.e Heisenberg uncertainty), some regions of spacetime may thus not be visible from a quantum point of view. The author gives one example of this, but this idea has far-reaching consequences: not just for physics but for mathematics. If viewed from a quantum perspective, many of the usual mathematical structures in topology and other areas of mathematics are changed considerably. One can then perform a kind of interpolation between "quantum" and "classical" mathematical constructions.

The author switches to more modern developments in part 3, with the idea of a traversable wormhole due to M. S. Morris and K.S. Thorne leading off the discussion. These wormholes are shown to violate the weak, strong, and dominant energy conditions, implying the existence of negative energy density near the throat of the wormhole. The existence of this energy will remind the reader of the Casimir effect, and the author does discuss this effect in detail. In addition, the thin shell formalism is discussed as a tool to analyze traversable wormholes without spherical geometry. Global techniques and the topological censorship are used to give a mathematically precise definition of a traversable wormhole, although the censorship theorem is not proven.

Part 4 attempts to remove the idea of time travel from pure fantasy science fiction and give it more of a scientific foundation. The author is convincing in his efforts, via his thorough analysis of causality conditions in spacetime, and the explicit constructions of simple time machines, which in the author's words are a consequence of general relativity being "infested" with geometries that produce them. The van Stockum, Godel, Kerr, and Gott tiem machines are discussed in detail, and the author shows explicitly how to construct time machines via wormholes. He also addresses the problems that arise in the actual construction of these time machines, such as the possibility of a non-Hausdorff topology, the problem of unique histories (Novikov conjecture), the breakdown of unitarity in the quantum realm, and the Hawking chronology protection conjecture.

Section 5 is an overview of the quantum field theory needed for a study of wormhole physics. The author shows that time- and space-orientable spacetimes are incompatible with the Standard model. He discusses in detail the result that the ANEC condition can be violated by scale anomalies. Readers will have to have a very detailed knowledge of quantum field theory in curved spacetime to follow the discussion. The calculation of van Vleck determinants, familiar as Green function techniques, are done also. The stress-energy tensor is calculated explictly for traversable wormhole spacetimes. The Wheeler-DeWitt minisuperspace formalism is used to shed light on the quantum aspects of Lorentzian wormholes, and the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for Einstein gravity on minisuperspace is solved exactly.

The last part of the book is more of a send off to the reader and an encouragement for further reading on the issues in the book A list of research problems in given for the ambitious and curious reader.

Spiritual Quests offers some terrific pearls of wisdom from various writers whose works contain religious themes. If you want to learn about writing inspirational literature, this may not be the best choice for you, but if you are interested in hearing a variety of perspeictives from people of different faiths and backgrounds, you may enjoy this book.

I particularly enjoyed that each writer shared specific instances from his or her writing. Fredrick Buechner's essay was my personal favorite with David Bradley's a close second. The book may be more enjoyable for those who have read something by these writers, but I found food for thought even though I haven't read their works.

Spiritual Quests is not a quick read, and some parts do drag. At other times, the "spiritual" aspect of writing was not clear, and some authors seemd to be more interested in sharing the spiritual dimensions of writing (ie. letting your characters guide you) rather than how spirituality can affect a writers' work. But it was still interesting, even if not what I expected.

                                  Book Description

Texas, for years, was a one-party state controlled by white democrats. In 1962, a young eighteen-year-old heard the first rumblings of Chicano community organization in the barrios of Cristal. The rumor in the town was that five Mexican Americans were going to run for all five seats on the city council. But first, poor citizens had to find a way to pay the $1.75 poll tax. Money had to be raised—through bake sales of tamales, cake walks, and dances. So began the political activism of José Angel Gutiérrez.
Gutiérrez's autobiography, The Making of a Chicano Militant, is the first insider's view of the important political and social events within the Mexican American communities in South Texas during the 1960s and 1970s. A controversial and dynamic political figure during the height of the Chicano movement, Gutiérrez offers an absorbing personal account of his life at the forefront of the Mexican-American civil rights movement—first as a Chicano and then as a militant.
Gutiérrez traces the racial, ethnic, economic, and social prejudices facing Chicanos with powerful scenes from his own life: his first summer job as a tortilla maker at the age of eleven, his racially motivated kidnapping as a teenager, and his coming of age in the face of discrimination as a radical organizer in college and graduate school. When Gutiérrez finally returned to Cristal, he helped form the Mexican American Youth Organization and, subsequently the Raza Unida Party to confront issues of ethnic intolerance in his community. His story is soon to be a classic in the developing literature of Mexican American leaders.

The events that took place in this book happened in my home town. The events started out as a good thing that was ment to help the hispanic comunity , in the end with poor planing it brought forth the slow death of a growing texas town.

i will be the first to admit that some thing had to change in order to help the hispanics, but after all was said done , the only major change that happened was the residence of the man that killed the town. if i sound harsh in my review , well i still live in the after shocks of the movment.

It's a book that tells generations born after el Movimiento that it took brave Chicanas(os) to make changes in politics, and education systems. This was done by Americans with coraje (anger) and who took this anger and put it into positive aciton. Having been part of the Movimiento Chicano this book brought back many memories. If you read "Rain of Gold" you'll like this book--it's the other story about those of us who the river crossed us, we did not cross the river. This book should be a must for every Chicano(a) in political science or Chicano studies.

                                      Book Description

The uniqueness of this text in combining geometric topology and differential geometry lies in its unifying thread: the notion of a surface. With numerous illustrations, exercises and examples, the student comes to understand the relationship between modern axiomatic approach and geometric intuition. The text is kept at a concrete level, 'motivational' in nature, avoiding abstractions. A number of intuitively appealing definitions and theorems concerning surfaces in the topological, polyhedral, and smooth cases are presented from the geometric view, and point set topology is restricted to subsets of Euclidean spaces. The treatment of differential geometry is classical, dealing with surfaces in R3 . The material here is accessible to math majors at the junior/senior level.

It is a very intiutive book in both areas. Also at the end of the book there is a good material for further study, author explains the research fields in Geometry/Topology and related books. If you are an undergraduate and want to get an overall idea about the gradute study in topology and geometry that is a nice introduction.

I have not read the book, only the reviews. In one excellent review here it is remarked that it is "unfortunate" that the author does not prove the Schoenflies theorem and the triangulability of surfaces.

later this same reviewer observes that the proof of the smooth Gauss Bonnet theorem in the book seems relatively hard. I merely wish to point out that the author has made choices in the reader's interest both by what he includes and what he omits.

The two theorems named above which are not proved, could well take another entire book to prove. They are far harder than the smooth Gauss Bonnet theorem.

I have seen entire books devoted to proving triangulability, and Schoenflies theorem was the subject of weeks of tedious work in a topology course I took as a student. I still dislike even hearing of this result. So if these omissions are the reviewer's only criticisms of the book, they should rightly be considered pluses.

Hence I also give the book at least 4 stars, by logical deduction.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2001-10-10

This book is suitable for reading at an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. The author is careful to present the subject from both a rigorous point of view and one that emphasizes the geometric intuition behind the subject. These two approaches to teaching topology are not mutually exclusive, with this book giving a good example of this.

After a brief overview of the elementary topology of subsets of Euclidean space in chapter 1, topological surfaces are discussed in chapter 2. Surfaces are built up from arcs, disks, and one-spheres. Unfortunately, the proofs of the theorem of invariance of domain and the Schonflies Theorem are not included, but references are given. Gluing techniques though are effectively discussed, and the author does not hesitate to use diagrams to explain the relevant concepts. The more popular constructions in surface topology, namely the Mobius strip and the Klein bottle are given as examples of the cutting and pasting techniques. The amusing fact that the Klein bottle can be obtained from gluing two Mobius strips along their boundaries is proven.

The theory of simplicial surfaces is discussed in the next chapter. Simplicial surfaces are much easier to deal with for beginning students of topology. Simplicial complexes are introduced first, and the author then studies which simplicial complexes have underlying spaces that are topological surfaces. He proves that this is the case when each one-dimensional simplex of the complex is the face of precisely two two-dimensional simplices, and the underlying space of each link of each zero-dimensional simplex of the complex is a one-dimensional sphere. Unfortunately, the author does not prove that any compact topological surface in n-dimensional Euclidean space can be triangulated. The Euler characteristic is defined first for 2-complexes and it is shown that it is the same for two simplicial surfaces that triangulate a compact topological surface. The author does prove in detail the classification of compact connected surfaces. Interestingly, the author also proves a simplicial analogue of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, and gives a proof of the Brouwer fixed point theorem.

The author turns to smooth surfaces in the next few chapters, wherein curves are defined along with the relevant differential-geometric notions such as curvature and torsion. The fundamental theorem of curves is proven. The reader is first introduced to the concept of what in more advanced treatments is called a differentiable manifold, and several concrete examples are given of smooth surfaces. The differential geometry of smooth surfaces is outlined, with the first fundamental form and directional derivatives discussed in great detail. The reader should be familiar with the inverse function theorem to appreciate the discussion of regular values.

Even more interesting differential geometry is discussed in chapter 6, which covers the curvature of smooth surfaces. The important Gauss map is defined, along with the Weingarten map and the second fundamental form. This allows an intrinsic notion of curvature, but the author does perform explicit computations of curvature using various choices of coordinates. The proof that Gaussian curvature is intrinsic (Theorema Egregium) is proven, along with the fundamental theorem of surfaces. Geodesics, so important in physical applications, are discussed in the next chapter. The reader gets a first look at the "Christoffel symbols", even though they are not designated as such in the book.

The book ends with a thorough treatment of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for smooth surfaces. The smooth case is much more difficult to prove than the simplicial case, as the reader will find out when studying this chapter. The author also gives a very brief introduction to non-Euclidean geometry.

Lots of times the mathematicians stuck in proofs, in that fool symbols, forgetting the ideas, the picture. One can never find the right way with closed eyes. This book teaches to think, getting beyond the symbols. It has also useful advises about the research areas. The author made his Phd at Cornell with D.Henderson. A beautiful undergraduate text.

2 out of 5 stars Just a mediocre book of lesser extent.......1998-05-08

First, the title reads fine. But there's a catch. This kind of title sounds like it covers all. The truth is. It ain't true. Second. The author's attitude. I'd rather say the author is talking to himself.
