    Book Description

Though there are still just twenty-four hours in a day, society's idea of who should be doing what and when has shifted. Time, the ultimate scarce resource, has become an increasingly contested battle zone in American life, with work, family, and personal obligations pulling individuals in conflicting directions. In "Fighting for Time," editors Cynthia Fuchs Epstein and Arne Kalleberg bring together a team of distinguished sociologists and management analysts to examine the social construction of time and its importance in American culture.

"Fighting for Time" opens with an exploration of changes in time spent at work—both when people are on the job and the number of hours they spend there—and the consequences of those changes for individuals and families. Contributors Jerry Jacobs and Kathleen Gerson find that the relative constancy of the average workweek in America over the last thirty years hides the fact that blue-collar workers are putting in fewer hours while more educated white-collar workers are putting in more. Rudy Fenwick and Mark Tausig look at the effect of nonstandard schedules on workers' health and family life. They find that working unconventional hours can increase family stress, but that control over one's work schedule improves family, social, and health outcomes for workers. The book then turns to an examination of how time influences the organization and control of work. The British insurance company studied by David Collinson and Margaret Collinson is an example of a culture where employees are judged on the number of hours they work rather than on their productivity. There, managers are under intense pressure not to take legally guaranteed parental leave, and clocks are banned from the office walls so that employees will work without regard to the time. In the book's final section, the contributors examine how time can have different meanings for men and women. Cynthia Fuchs Epstein points out that professional women and stay-at-home fathers face social disapproval for spending too much time on activities that do not conform to socially prescribed gender roles—men are mocked by coworkers for taking paternity leave, while working mothers are chastised for leaving their children to the care of others.

"Fighting for Time" challenges assumptions about the relationship between time and work, revealing that time is a fluid concept that derives its importance from cultural attitudes, social psychological processes, and the exercise of power. Its insight will be of interest to sociologists, economists, social psychologists, business leaders, and anyone interested in the work-life balance.

            Book Description

Whatever can be said about the financial crises that have plagued East Asian countries since the early 1990s, it must be averred that they teach us a great deal. Many earlier assumptions about finance and investment have been called into question, and the field is more open than it has been in many decades to legal and economic analysis and theory. In particular, issues of financial sector reform have come into sharp focus. Here is a new proposal, solidly grounded in current reality, for a regional "zone of law" designed to supplement and benefit domestic reforms under way in Japan and the three emerging economies of Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand. The author draws on a wide range of relevant material, including exploration of international standards and "best practices" in banking and finance, the experience of the U.S. and the U.K. in planning and implementing reform measures, and the theoretical literature respecting financial crises and what causes them. In this context, the specific reforms applied in the four Asian countries under consideration are discussed in detail, with "lessons to be learned" about crisis detection, containment, and prevention. During the course of the analysis, the author reveals fundamental policy areas where meaningful and effective reform can take place.

Financial Stability Issues: The Case of East Asia offers numerous practical applications at the same time as it strikes a rich vein of theory in the field. Its fresh, sensible approach will be greatly appreciated, not only by academic theorists, but by hardheaded business people, policymakers, and regulators as well.

                          Book Description

This new edition of AIDS Testing significantly enlarges the coverage of topics in this rapidly-changing area. The high level of concern among health professionals and the general public makes up-to-date information on testing for HIV and related retroviruses more important than ever. Recognizing the widening role of AIDS testing in our society, the editors have expanded the new edition to in- clude not only laboratory aspects of AIDS testing, but also applications in blood bank and hospital environments, insurance implications of testing, psychosocial and legal issues, and management considerations of AIDS testing in the workplace and among health care workers. The first edition was reviewed in the New England Journal of Medicine as "a very successful balance of detailed informationabout various aspects of laboratory testing and a comprehensive view of its clinical and social roles", and "comprehensive, succinct, and well executed".

                              Book Description

This engaging text takes the reader along the trail of light from Newton's particles to Einstein's relativity. Like the best detective stories, it presents clues and encourages the reader to draw conclusions before the answers are revealed. The first seven chapters cover the behavior of light, Newton's particle theory, waves and an electromagnetic wave theory of light, the photon, and wave-particle duality. Baierlein goes on to develop the special theory of relativity, showing how time dilation and length contraction are consequences of the two simple principles underlying the theory. An extensive chapter derives the equation E = mc2 clearly from first principles and then explores its consequences.

This book is clear and very interesting. It teaches the general idea of light and modern physics. It can be too simplistic at times for technically minded people.

The Collected Works books include 62 volumes and are sold in three separate sets. They cover the complete span of Watchman Nee's life and ministry and include rare photos and scans of some of his earlier newsletters in Chinese and English.

This set of books -- though admitedly very expensive -- is by far the most valuable set of books we have in our home, and they are in constant use.

Not surprisingly, our "favorite" books are those that cover his later years of deeper ministry. But we've been very blessed by every aspect of his writings -- even the earlier period. He was, without doubt, an amazing man of God and every Christian would be wise to avail themselves of the riches of the wisdom that the Lord granted him.

I recommend this set of books very highly for everyone, whatever their spiritual age, who wants to grow into the deeper things of God and leave behind the mass of ordinary, everyday, so-called Christians who are not prepared to take up their cross and follow the Master.

                                Book Description

Awash with skullduggery, malice, terror, and opportunism, here are 28 first-hand memoirs and contemporary reports of the most famous pirates to sail the seven seas, including Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, ‘Calico Jack’ Rackham, Anne Bonney, and Jean Lafitte. These range from the Golden Age of piracy, beginning in the mid 16th century with the birth of the ‘buccaneers’ in the Caribbean, to more recent times.

Some of the accounts covered are Francis ‘Scourge of Spain’ Drake’s audacious night treasure raid on Nombre de Dios, the capture of Panama by Henry Morgan, cruelest of the ‘Brethren of the Coast’, Alexander Exquemelin’s fly-on-the-wall telling of the ‘wicked order of pirates or robbers of the sea,’ and the journal of William Dampier which was found stashed in a hollow bamboo tube, after he fled life as a Somerset farmer.

In addition, this book offers the Pirate’s Code of Honour (article 4: lights out at eight o’clock, 'if after that hour any still remained inclined to drinking, to do it on open deck'), a listing of pirate songs, and a full pirate chronology.

Amazing book, chock full of facts from the horses mouth. Many of the tales printed are from actual journals, documents, diaries, manifests etc so its very interesting to hear first hand stories of these tales. Some of them are a little hard to follow as most of the author wrote in 3rd person but other than that its awesome.

First of all I'd like to comment on the previous review. It is clear that the reviewer stopped reading the book within the first chapter as their review is based completely on a poor chapter to begin a book. After you fight your way through that one first chapter and give the book a second chance, you won't be let down -- that is if you find history interesting in the first place. Some chapters are written by actual pirates and some are written by historians. Either way, each chapter is fun and interesting. If you want to learn about pirates, I recommend this book.

With The Mammoth Book of Pirates, Lewis has done little but compile several first-hand journal entries relating to historical pirates into one volume. The accounts themselves are often dry, somewhat archaic, and lack any real narrative flair. The book as a whole has no continuity whatsoever, and offers only a brief, vague, and poorly researched introduction to each (apparently) unedited piece.

If you are interested in raw primary sources, and patient enough to wade through tedious descriptions of foliage and ship manifests, you may enjoy this book, but I doubt it. Don't expect any kind of story to unfold before you.

I read this book as a book club selection a few years ago. I had doubts about it -- but after I read it--I loved it. Ms. Yelena Khanga is a Black Russian women who discovers her heritage and her love of jounalism. Khanga has such a rich family history, American (Black and white), Russian and African. As she tells her story she is unashame and relentless in detailing the facts - good and bad. Her family leaves New York in the early 1900's and lives in Russia. As the story unfolds, the family has been involved in Russian and African politics, her grandparents and father-- which is an inexpected twist. She is a very strong woman who comes to American as a journalist and rediscovers the life her family left behind. This story is unusual and unpredictable. After reading the book, I felt absorbed in family history-- not only American history, but Russian and African history.

If you are a fan of family history as I am - you will like this book.

Lying some 250 miles off the east coast of Africa, Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island. It is quite unlike the neighboring continent, and, for that matter, quite unlike any other landmass on the planet. Its plant life is almost wholly endemic: eight out of 10 plants there grow naturally only on Madagascar, and it has an entire ecosystem, the spiny desert, that is found nowhere else on earth. Many of its animal species, too, seem to have emerged from some evolutionary track that runs parallel to the rest of the world's; here can be found lemurs that will fit into a human palm, dwarf hippos, giant chameleons, and other rarities.

These plants and animals constitute an extraordinary diversity, writes science journalist Peter Tyson in this engaging book, and the island's richness of life has long intrigued scientists, who have proposed several theories to explain it. Those scientists, some of whom Tyson profiles at work in the field, are racing against time to catalog island life before it disappears, for Madagascar's human population is rapidly growing, and with that growth, the island's forests and other habitats are falling. The urgency may abate, Tyson writes, with guarded optimism, now that the island's current president has proposed that all of Madagascar be considered as a United Nations World Heritage Site, which would help provide funds to prevent further loss of habitat and diversity. Though this proposal is controversial, Tyson makes a good case for why it should be taken up--and he shows just how high the stakes are.

Throughout his narrative, Tyson mixes scientific reportage with a nicely rendered travelogue that guides readers across the island while outlining key concepts of island biogeography and conservation biology. His book is a worthy companion to David Quammen's Song of the Dodo, and valuable reading for anyone concerned with the world environment. --Gregory McNamee

                                  Book Description

Since the age of dinosaurs, Madagascar has thrived in isolation off the east coast of Africa. In this real-life "lost world," hundreds of animal and plant species, most famously the lemurs, have evolved here and only here, while other creatures extinct elsewhere for tens of millions of years now vie with modern man for survival. It's a land of striking geography, from soaring mountains to vast canyon lands, from tropical rain forests to spiny desert. And its people are a conundrum unto themselves, their origins obscure, their language complex and distinct, and their beliefs fascinating. In The Eighth Continent, Peter Tyson will guide you into this, the planet's most exotic frontier, so you can see for yourself why it's been called "the naturalist's promised land."

Part scientific exploration, part adventure saga, part cultural and historical narrative, The Eighth Continent follows Tyson's journeys with four scientific experts as they explore the fourth-largest island in the world:

                                • A herpetologist with a pied piper call to reptiles who has discovered and collected more Malagasy species than any other biologist-and continues to discover more every year
                                • A paleoecologist searching an enormous cavern complex for clues as to why the island's megafauna-Galipagos-sized tortoises, lemurs as big as apes, ten-foot-tall birds, and pygmy hippos, among others-all died out less than two millennia ago
                                • An archeologist trying to answer the most basic and puzzling question about the Malagasy people: Where did they come from?
                                • A primatologist who studies elusive jungle lemurs even as she strives to prevent the island's total ecological destruction

For if Madagascar is one of the most fascinating environments on the planet, it is also one of the most endangered. As the Malagasy hack a subsistence from the island's dwindling forests, they also threaten its diverse habitats and its rich biological diversity. It is not an easy situation to resolve, nor is it easy to answer the burning question at its heart: Can Madagascar be saved? In The Eighth Continent, Peter Tyson navigates this tortuous path as he delves into the island's storied interior as well as its misty past.

I hate to disagree with the majority of the reviews, but I only found this book "okay." It's worth reading but it's not to rave about. The best parts deal with the Malagsy people, culture and history. The descriptions of the animals, plants, and ecosystems are weak. There are few photos and those are not highly informative or high quality. I recommend sections of David Quamman's book, Song of the Dodo, which has a much stronger biological bent to it.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Introduction to Madagascar.......2001-12-27

I have come away from this book with a strong desire to visit Madagascar and a good understanding of the country's wonders and challenges. In a very entertaining style recounting his travels and sharing tales of the island's lore, Peter Tyson gives us an overview of both the Malagasy people and fauna ( and somtimes flora ) and how they relate in light of its conservation issues. He also outlines the limited knowledge that exists as to how this unique island has come to be so different from anywhere else on Earth, opening the scope for unlimited wonder and whetting a thirst to find out more. A great starting point for an interest in Madagascar and a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I would recommend reading Mike Eveleigh's, Maverick in Madagascar, after this.

This book makes you feel like your on the trip through Madagascar with the author. Very detailed and explanatory.
                                  Very fun to read!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book about the natural history of Madagscar.......2001-08-11

Madagascar in my mind has always been one those wild exotic places. This book does a very good job of introducing the place and providing insights into wildlife, culture, orgins, and a possible plan for the future of conservation in Madagascar. It reads well and doesn't bog down very often. The chapters about the herps of Madagascar were my favorite, but I am biased towards herps. The conservation issues are presented in a balanced way, and the opposing opinions about the success or failure of the Community development/national park conservation plans are pretty well explained. I recommend this book to anybody wanting to learn more about Madagascar, it is a great introduction would be a worthwhile read if you wanted to travel to Madagascar and be more than just a bumbling tourist.

                                  5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2001-07-07

I'm a huge Madagascar fan and finiding books on one of my favorite places is a rare treat for me - this book is no exception. It's written wonderfully and has useful factual information. Before travelling here, I would suggest that you find all the information you can and this book is one of about 3 that I could say are appropriate for this.

                                    Book Description

As part of a global effort to identify those areas where conservation measures are needed most urgently, World Wildlife Fund has assembled teams of scientists to conduct ecological assessments of all five continents. Terrestrial Ecoregions of Africa and Madagascar is the latest contribution, presenting in a single volume the first comprehensive assessment of biodiversity patterns, threats to biodiversity, and resulting conservation priorities across the African continent and its islands. Looking at biodiversity and threats in terms of biological units rather than political units, the book offers a comprehensive examination of African biodiversity across all biomes and multiple taxonomic groups.

In addition to the seven main chapters, the book includes twenty essays by regional experts that provide more depth on key issues, as well as nine detailed appendixes that present summary data used in the analyses, specific analytical methodologies, and a thorough text description for each of Africa's 119 terrestrial ecoregions.

Terrestrial Ecoregions of Africa and Madagascar provides a blueprint for conservation action and represents an unparalleled guide for investments and activities of conservation agencies and donor organizations.
